- dacrazydude, on 05/16/2008, -3/+13I thought the F-14s were decommissioned and replaced by the F-18's? Is this an older photograph or are the F-14Ds still in service?
- Terrk, on 05/16/2008, -2/+13You are correct! They are still used for training, but they were taken off aircraft carries and replaced with the shorter ranged F-18
- IrwinFletcher, on 05/16/2008, -0/+10Sorry, but the Navy's F-14 have gone the way of the Dodo. It had become cost ineffective to maintain the Tomcat in flying order and they have all been replaced by F/A-18s. They are not used for training now either. The only nation flying the F-14 now is Iran.
- p51d007, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Yeah, and the Iranian F-14's that still fly, aren't worth crap. No spare parts (unless found on the black market), and they are the older A models which had engine problems. Also, they would of had to fix the fire control system, which "mysteriously"

- masteryoda, on 05/16/2008, -1/+3Are the Raptors carrier capable?
- seraph582, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2good question!
- BelatedHero, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1At some point the JSF/F-35 Lightning II will come into play. Not sure when though.
- tomj88, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2No, and they almost certainly never will be. As stated above, The F-35 will be the next carrier capable jet to come into service (I believe it is stated to come into service in 2011/12)
- mypetridish, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1what's the difference between the carrier capable and non-capable fighters? the former has a hook for landing on carriers and have potentially shorter runway requirements to fly?
- tim3094, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1landing on a carrier has been described as a controlled crash. The planes need to be able to handle the shock of landing. And even taking off is tough with the steam catapults generating acceleration resulting in 6 g's (that's a lot)
- hitokiri808, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Raptors are Air Force only.
- p51d007, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Only if the landing gear is beefed up. Almost all air force planes have "hooks", but they are not for landing on aircraft, but for use on the runway barrier landings, when the brakes or something else doesn't allow a normal landing.
- hitokiri808, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1EXIF data said 2006.

- pigfister, on 05/16/2008, -40/+8oooo doesn't the USA have superior technology, i know lets bomb Iran because they wish to trade oil in euro's instead of dollars.
well the "superior technology" isn't helping you in Iraq now is it, other than being able to murder thousands of innocent ppl.- poidh, on 05/16/2008, -7/+20What a *****.
- topace3000, on 05/16/2008, -5/+19So how's that pigfistin' going?
- cygnus2112, on 05/16/2008, -1/+13Yes, it's certainly because of the euro change. That's why the U.S. would want to bomb all of Europe: currency conversion.
- da_bradler, on 05/16/2008, -13/+3Actually that's exactly why you guys invaded Iraq if you would do a little research. Iraq was threatening to start only accepting Euros for Oil. If the middle eastern countries decided to no longer accept the US dollar, the value of the Dollar would plummet.
Currently all Oil trade is done in American currency, if countries started to adopt the euro instead, countries would need to trade there american currency for euros. If that happened America would lose a lot of power and the american government has not tolerated it.- poidh, on 05/16/2008, -1/+5What a simple brain. It's almost as if the cerebral folds which most of us take for granted for our intelligence have not developed within your head.

- seraph582, on 05/16/2008, -4/+10hey reisrocks - we'll spend close to 1000 times as much on government entitlement programs like medicare and social security - and a healthy chunk of that will be spent on non-citizen illegal immigrants.
BUT THAT'S COOL - let's gripe about the government taking citizens' money and investing it into an industry that employs some of our country's most skilled engineers. THAT'S COOL.
Try getting your opinions from somewhere other than the television or newspaper, my friend - like, oh I dunno, your OWN BRAIN?- reisrocks, on 05/16/2008, -3/+31000 times huh? as an engineer myself, who had a bout working in defense, I call that a magic number (read - pulled out of your arse).
Anyway I don't want to get into an argument about the benefits of non-intervention, and the idiocy of believing that investing in war is smarter than investing in your own health care.
But I'll leave it to this: your post is bewildering. I live in the UK, I have defacto NHS, and Bupa through my work. And BOY do I love it.
I also have lots of admiration for countries that are smart enough to stay OUT of war.
Hey but we can always have this discussion when you'll need to take a crazy loan because you need a medical intervention.. be well my friend.

- ivorylion, on 05/16/2008, -2/+1That's what she said...
- rriggstx, on 05/16/2008, -0/+0I initially thought the same thing. I attributed it to having do with how freakin' gianormous F-14's were. You might be judging the scale against 22 Gulf Streams. F-14's were a touch larger.
- mwhatley, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2based on the description, I was expecting a circus.
- StEligius, on 05/16/2008, -3/+0Is the white and blue jet the Char Aznable custom ace pilot model? No, No, I see, it is the Amuro Ray G unit verses the dull looking production GM units. To be Char's it would have to be red, and have a funky antenna.
- pjdk28, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2wtf?
- bejitt, on 05/16/2008, -0/+0Looks more like Victory, so I'd say Üso Ewin

They don't want the parts to be sold to Iran to keep their old F14's flying.
The planes you see on that ship are probably already piles of trash.
My dad took me to a huge airplane graveyard in Arizona... acres of enormous old military planes...it was awesome. - da_bradler, on 05/16/2008, -6/+1Reminds me of a Star destroyer jam packed with tie fighters. I wonder which world there off to conquer/"rebuild"

- tehrich, on 05/16/2008, -1/+6One of them near the top left looks like its tail fins are painted with the UPS colors and logo... That'd be some fast delivery...
- h2m3, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2See the way they're launching from both the forward and the angled decks? Eventually they will move all of those birds off the fantail and have to recover them all. Interesting that there are three helos on deck, also - who is out flying safety? I like the way that one is sitting just behind the one getting ready to launch, like it is curiously peaking around the side to watch.
http://flickr.com/photos/h2m3/79046517/- LeRenard, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1They weren't going to recover these planes, the next stop for them was land. This was a ferry back to scrap them.

Seriously, who out there has better planes that we need to attack? no one. With the exception of Europe and Russia, everyone else's planes are the technological equivalent of F-4 Phantoms.
"If it aint broke, dont fix it"
The F-22 Raptor though IS pretty sweet, but the Super Hornet is a steaming pile of Gay. And were are all the F-15s nowadays? Big fuggin plane lemme tell you. - cdigioia, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2Huh...it sucks how our military has been used recently, but still, I take a certain amount of (slightly evil?) pride knowing our country can kick the ***** out of any other country out there.
