Seeing Westerners detained and punished will send a strong message to the locals to not even think twice about fighting the system. I would expect that they are years from being back on the street because no diplomat/politician with any weight is going to jump in to defend their actions. They knew what they were getting themselves into and they are just outright stupid. They can SMS, Twitter, etc. for attention all they want as they serve their indeterminate sentence over the next few years.
- angusm, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1'm sure the Chinese government would approve of your message of "Westerners shouldn't get involved, it only makes things worse, it's a local matter", but you seem to have misunderstood the facts of the case. The videobloggers arrested were there not to stir the pot themselves, but to document the efforts of those locals who are "stirring the pot" already. Don't you think that might be worth something?
You suggest that seeing Westerners detained will discourage the locals. I'd argue that seeing Westerners present in repressive regimes and risking imprisonment in order to get the word out to the West sends an important message to the locals. It lets the victims of tyranny know that the world has not forgotten them.
The mainstream media has largely played ball with the Chinese government, concentrating on the fireworks and the shiny gold medals and not going out of their way to look for evidence of dissent or repression. It's left to citizen journalists like Conley, Rae and the others to have the courage of their convictions and actually get out there and try to tell the stories ignored by the corporate media.
