"Black National Anthem" Causes Stir at Denver Mayor Speech
origin.denverpost.com — As Denver dignitaries gathered today for Mayor John Hickenlooper's State of the City address, City Council President Michael Hancock introduced singer Rene Marie to perform the national anthem. But that's not what she did. Instead, Marie performed the song "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," which also is known as the "black national anthem."

- USNavyBlue, on 07/02/2008, -1/+23Unacceptable and disgusting. The next time someone should sing the "White National Anthem" and lets see the reaction! The pendulum swings both ways not one. Quite frankly America is SICK of this racist behavior, it shines through everyday. However, at least America is getting the wake up call that it desperately needs thanks to clowns like this!
- Conspiracy20, on 07/02/2008, -1/+11With you as always Navy. Well said!
- OwlCreek, on 07/02/2008, -2/+18She can sugarcoat her reasons all she likes. This was simply the same arrogance and disregard for others that you get from the idiot with the thumping stereo sitting next to you at a stoplight.
- woodrow8292, on 07/02/2008, -0/+13Sad that people still try and separate themselves from our great country. It's funny how when you post about people hating this country and being embarrassed to be an American they all say no no that's not the case. Then you see people doing stuff like this. A sad comment on some peoples patriotism.
- TechMike, on 07/02/2008, -0/+15She says she wanted to express her love of her country by mixing the lyrics of "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" with the melody of the "Star-Spangled Banner." Trouble is, she was hired to sing the AMERICAN national anthem. I've seen patriots - validated war heros - stand to attention at "God Bless America" and "God Bless the USA", but the first verse of the Start Spangled Banner is still the only recognized national anthem
- mondster, on 07/02/2008, -0/+16Not the time for a personal agenda.
- brothaslide, on 07/02/2008, -0/+15It was immature and ill-advised.
- LoveHappiness, on 07/02/2008, -7/+1I have lived in Denver since 1975 and I have never experienced the degree of racism and oppression that has been expressed against African Americans by Hickenlooper and his present administration. If you listen to the comments by the singer she speaks of taking a stand that her parents and others took during the Movement, stand-up for your rights without fear of consequences. The City Administration has closed down our voices. Since the beginning of Hickenlooper and his Administration’s reign, African American teachers’ numbers have decreased from 500 to 50 in all Denver Public Schools. We are denied good paying City jobs, State jobs, and public sector jobs even though we are some of the most educated, credential owned, top skilled individuals. Our young children (males) are being directed into prisons and pushed out of school under the control of City Attorneys and there is no help in the Justice System or legal communities for African Americans. African Americans are suffering and we are being totally ignored because we are the minority with less numbers and they feel that we don't count. The artist used her talent to speak out to the Country about the oppression of African Americans in Denver, Colorado. I suggest that you pay close attention to what the singer said.
- JointVenture, on 07/02/2008, -3/+6Yes, everyone is out to get your black children and turn them into criminals.
Who's your daddy?
*****. - USNavyBlue, on 07/02/2008, -2/+6"The artist used her talent to speak out to the Country about the oppression of African Americans in Denver, Colorado. I suggest that you pay close attention to what the singer said."
I did pay close attention and it reeks of racism against evil whitey and ITS WRONG! It is insulting to Americans to have the Star Spangled Banner sung to those words. Our fore fathers fought, died and bleed much blood to free themselves from the oppression of tyranny by the evil British Crown and she spit on that! That is why there is outrage!
However, the black community does not even care if they offend Americans of other colors and its wrong. When is the black community going to stop being so self centered and start showing compassion and concern for others outside their race? It has been a one way street for too long in the eyes of many.
However, there would have been utter outrage if the "white national ahtem" was sung about the oppressive government keeping white down white guilt for so called past wrongs! (Not that there is one, however I am sure someone could think of something) And you can't tell me there would not be. The black community would be screaming and demanding a groveling apology.
Yes - there are issues in the black community (and yes all races have issues to deal with not just yours) however that being said it is up to the black community to do something about it and stop blaming the government and/or white people for the problems. Slavery is over. The Civil War was fought by white men to free slaves and thousands died for that cause. Is that not enough?
Affirmative Action was put into place to try and correct the wrongs as well. Which is racism because people are passed over because they are considered the wrong color. Is that not enough?
Scholarships have been are in place for only black people for college education that others races are DENIED, which is racism. Is that not enough?
Homes loans and low interest loans are put into place by HUD and other mortgage lenders solely based on color which denies others again. Is that not enough?
I'll stop it here because there are many more examples I could give you.
With that being said, what will be enough?
Now I know Thomas Jefferson was correct when he stated that: The two races can not live under one government. [verbatim]
Do you think that your race would be better if they had their OWN government that represented your communities needs and addressed them? A government that worked to the betterment of your race and community? I think so and I don't mean that in a derogatory way. Think about it. Forced integration has hurt both races from what I can see. I can see just from what you posted. Forced integration is a failed experiment and everyone pretty knows it. However most people don't have the gonads to stand up and say so. - PolishLogic, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6"Our young children (males) are being directed into prisons "
Probably because they're not breaking laws and are merely being snatched up and put into prison for no reason, right? 90% of the people in prison are innocent, just ask them.
A black man is one of the two presidential candidates, and has an incredibly large following. If he's elected, all pity for your "downtrodden" will be null and void. Take some ***** responsibility rather than playing the "woe is me" card. Spending a welfare check on new rims for your '83 Cutlass Sierra is not a sound plan for success in the world. - USNavyBlue, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6EWWW! I just checked the crime stats at the Department of Justice! AWFUL! Approx. 34 thousand white women are raped every year by black men. I guess there Innocent, right? /sarcasm.
However, the reverse is statically 0 because it is officially less than 10 a year- white on black rape and any other rape for that matter.
Now you tell me, what is wrong with this picture?
Oh that's right is racism and oppression. They are all innocent! /gag me - enough already.
The fact that 34 thousand white women are raped each year in this country by black men is OUTARGUES and needs to stop like yesterday. This is an act of war for dominance and power against the white man. Hell go to Africa and they themselves will tell you so. At least they are honest about it!
Where is the outage from the MSM? Utter silence! Sick and tired of the hypocrisy and double standards. It is time white people grew a damn backbone like that of the founding fore fathers and stop this mess once and for all. ENOUGH already.

- jb1965, on 07/02/2008, -1/+6Hopefully this is the last time she gets a gig singing for the city. Maybe she should spend some time in Zimbabwe. Maybe that'll make her feel more American.
