Bush in 2007: U.S Will Get Out of Iraq if Asked to Leave
thinkprogress.org — Yesterday, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said he would like to set a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops. Today, however, the Bush administration rejected the timetable. In an April 24, 2007 interview with Charlie Rose, however, President said he would remove troops if asked by Iraq but he predicted that Maliki would not ask.

There, fixed! - Archimboldo, on 07/09/2008, -4/+3Al Qaeda troops in the space of 2 years have dropped from 12,000 to a 1,200 remnant in Mosul. Now because of the success of the surge, which Democrats bitched and moaned about (yet approved because they had no alternative that wouldn't fail and cause chaos), Iraq feels confident enough to manage its security.
Bet you guys are so disappointed. At least a face-saving spin will help. "Yeah, Iraq wants us to leave because the surge made things worse." - youareretarded, on 07/09/2008, -2/+2How many al qaeda troops were in Iraq before the war?
Just because this administration took a dump on a rug and then cleaned up that dump doesn't mean they deserve any sort of kudos from me;) - Archimboldo, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Better than just withdrawing as Democrats wanted to do.

- tidu, on 07/09/2008, -2/+3He's said this years before, and we've had Iraqi leaders ask for our withdraw years before and nothing happened. It's all politics, it's only worth a grain of salt if you catch them after they hold their hand above that book.

- robbiemuffin, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I've been making the assumption that, his policies and permission for torture (or torture-like-treatment, whatever that difference means) were simply moral mistakes. He'd failed so miserably, it was reasonable to assume that he really believed in what he was doing, and simply had no idea what that actually was. He made statements like this one cited with Charlie Rose, and I thought I saw him say the same thing without Charlie Rose ... that were perfectly in line with that vision: he was the don quixote .. or Nixon or Castro of our time. But this is pretty obviously a political move without regard for the ideals and ot a lesser degree even the interests he purported to stand for. This makes me want to sign that online Kucinich thing.

- SoyJames, on 07/08/2008, -2/+28In 1989, thirteen months after the oft-cited occasion when Saddam Hussein "gassed his own people" in Kurdish villages, then-Secretary of State Baker sent a nice note to Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz, seeking "to strengthen the relationship between the United States and Iraq whenever possible". In 1990, while Baker was Secretary of State under Bush, Saddam met with U.S. Ambassador April Glaspie before attacking Kuwait, and specifically asked Glaspie if the U.S. would object to an attack. Glaspie referenced Baker, her boss, in her response: "We have no opinion on your Arab-Arab conflicts, such as your dispute with Kuwait. Secretary Baker has directed me to emphasize the instruction, first given to Iraq in the 1960s, that the Kuwait issue is not associated with America." Saddam subsequently attacked Kuwait...

- dunderballer, on 07/08/2008, -4/+16The more the Bushies and McCainites insist on continued occupation of Iraq against the will of the majority of Americans and Iraqis, the more evident it is becoming that the invasion was about gaining a strategic Oil interest. As we enter a more global economy, world oil demand is increasing. The US economy may take a hit if it doesn't continue to be able to consume the majority of the worlds oil at lower prices paid by other countries. That fact does not make the trade of blood for oil justifiable. It is time to be honest about the situation. Democratic Governor Brian Schweitzer had some straight talk on the issue:

- sixsixsixtimer, on 07/09/2008, -18/+3More hidden agenda propaganda by the closet racists and anti-Israel lobby. A timetable can not be fully set by Maliki alone but by the Iraqi Parliament as well. Maliki is not a dictator that can make the decision based on words.
Buried- rz8472, on 07/09/2008, -1/+8So anything critical of the War in Iraq is automatically anti-Israeli? You do realize that it's actually to Israel (and everyone else's) benefit if we leave since all the occupation has done is decreased dramatically the quality of life for everyday Iraqis, made it a hotbed for extremism, and aroused anti-American and anti-Israeli sentiment.
What happened that liberal guy with the same Star of David logo that you do? I'd much rather hear his opinion on this.- sixsixsixtimer, on 07/09/2008, -9/+1Address the point about Maliki mentioning a timetable and actually taking action and making a formal declaration, using also the parliament. Or do you beleive that Maliki is a dictator like Sadaam and we should jump at his every command?
Lets wait for Iraq's government to formally decide. Meanwhile don't call Bush a hypocrite. - cheezintern, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5yep, anything not involved in the US clearing the middle east of all enemies of israel is anti-israeli, as well as anti-semetic, and anti-fluffy bunnies.

- elektronjunge, on 07/09/2008, -10/+5Rejecting a timetable and refusing to leave are different things. A time table for withdrawl would be like, half out by date x, and the rest by date y. Its kinda not the easiest thing in the world to move an entire army.
That said I don't support Bush or the war in Iraq. - leladax, on 07/09/2008, -5/+12Nobody ever ***** cared about the Iraqis. It's all about the oil and economical and political intimidation against Middle Eastern Countries. Wake up. 9/11 was the best thing that happened to right wing extremists.

- ShadowFoxxx, on 07/09/2008, -3/+5Of course he stayed, the war is motivated by oil. But that's also very irritating because we have natural oil here in the U.S., in Alaska and California, and so forth.

- lndmn01, on 07/09/2008, -2/+6Did I miss the part were Maliki asked the US to leave? All I've seen is discussions of a POSSIBLE timetable. Perhaps we should wait until Bush actually lies before the accusations fly....
- tellahoohooo, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2Of course he won't, its to profitable to the federal reserve, contractors & oil companies...

- jbkingsalmon11, on 07/09/2008, -7/+4As long as nothing like 9/11 happens again (in which case I say NUKE THE TERRORISTS) I think we should just let the stupid Shiite and Sunii idiots destroy each other. It was good that we took care of Saddam, but I think as soon as bin laden is rotting in his grave we should gradually pull out. God, I'm sick of always hearing about some crazy religious Muslim moron blowing himself up and killing people for no reason. I'd like to shoot one myself. Now... how about sealing up the border?
- loganro, on 07/09/2008, -5/+1I am going to go ahead and warn that you are about to get bashed by idiots. I agree with you though.
- chicofaraby, on 07/09/2008, -2/+6"I'm sick of always hearing about some crazy religious Muslim moron blowing himself up and killing people for no reason."
Yeah, it's like they didn't ask the US to invade, kill a million people, flatten a few cities and turn the capitol city into a shooting gallery. Ungrateful bastards.
And yes, a million plus people have died there:
http://www.conflictandhealth.com/content/2/1/1 - shaelen, on 07/09/2008, -1/+6Why do you believe finding Bin Laden or even killing him would make everything ok? Do you somehow think that all aggression will suddenly end? And as far crazy religious Muslim morons blowing themselves up and killing people for no reason.. No reason? Oh that's right, because someone would have no reason to do something like that. They're probably just bored.
- WoollyMittens, on 07/09/2008, -0/+7You can't nuke an ideology. The only thing you can do, is to make sure they blow their own ***** up instead of yours. Turning two countries into colonies and your own country into a police-state is not worth it.
- tellahoohooo, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3Your fighting an ideology, this is a war that has no end, no clear cut victory and no rational thought behind it. Unless your rational thought is to have the federal reserve, a completely privatized corporation, create billions and billions of dollars and give it, all at interest, to the actual federal government so they can fund the war. -- "Give me control of a nation's money and I care not who makes it's laws" - Mayer Amschel Bauer Rothschild -- Handing out no contest contracts to war profiteering contractors and oil companies to profit even further off the death and destruction of innocent men, women and children. So you keep your head held high and continue saying that it's all about Bin Laden being the keystone to this whole arch of terror.
This is about and has always been about money & oil, that's it. The mass media has made sure your ideas are the same by manipulation and a constant barrage of terror terror terror...
-- “We are grateful to the washington post, the new York times, time magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost 40 years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subjected to the lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national auto-determination practiced in the past centuries.”
