Documents show Georgia's Secretary of State knew of Diebold
rawstory.com — Documents provided to RAW STORY by a whistleblower close to Cox ’s office show that one of the key problems Georgia officials were trying to resolve was related to an unauthorized patch installed on machines prior to the election.

- mikelieman, on 07/31/2008, -2/+21Show up, say the machine's broken and keeps messing up your vote, and demand a paper ballot.
Fill it out, and stick around to make sure they don't throw it out and it actually gets counted.
That's the key, I think... Taking the day off work to MAKE SURE that *YOUR* vote gets counted and there's no hanky panky between the ballot box and the tabulation.
And, rhetorically, who can take a whole day off the ensure the fairness and proper operation of the vote?
Screwed Again.- subgeniusd, on 07/31/2008, -0/+15From the article - "They controlled the warehouse, the machines, and the certification. There were no state employees.” In the intown Atlanta precinct where I voted in 2002 I remember some clown with a Diebold name tag "observing" the activity.
And to your point about "claiming machine malfunction" there are like 20+ machines in most urban precincts so that won't work at all.
I in fact asked that dope why there was no hard copy voting reciept and he said it was not necessary with their "secure technology". I asked "so my vote just went into the ether I guess" ( I vividly recall this having just heard about Diebold fraud on Coast to Coast).
And this is how we got 8 sad Bush years.........corrupt bastards. - SolitarySoviet, on 07/31/2008, -2/+9take a nail and scrape the edge of the touchscreen to destroy it... silent but effective, they wont have time to replace the machines so they would have to start doing paper ballots.

- stretch611, on 07/31/2008, -0/+8And this year, thanks in part to Bob Barr, it should be a close election between Obama and McCain in Georgia.
I wonder what 'patch" Diebold will install this year. - scojac, on 07/31/2008, -0/+7Exactly, justguessing. I hear all of these outrages against our democracy again and again... and nothing ever gets done about it. Rove, executive powers, Diebold, Blackwater, you name it: it seems that all of these abuses are just catalogued and thrown on the backburner.
I sincerely hope that there isn't just too much going wrong to fix it. But how can a person expect change when the people who are responsible for these things aren't held accountable and aren't really elected?

- ConAmoreEFuoco, on 07/31/2008, -1/+7Alright, I'm calling this scenario:
"Despite a clear lead in the polls, Barack Obama lost the presidential election to John McCain, 55% to 43%. Media pundits rationalize the unexpected results: "It turns out that a lot of white people who had said they would vote for the black candidate were lying to pollsters to appear politically correct."
And that will be it. Hey, maybe we can win in 2012 though.
- N3M3515, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3agreed.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5Obama has to win by at least 15% to be shown to win.
But it's all the little crooks they let in that will make the real difference.
Rigging the vote for Max Cleland was just too obvious -- the problem is on all the elections where we aren't looking, or don't know who should be winning.

Raw Story began reporting on this story months before CBS' 60 Minutes picked it up.- dafragsta, on 07/31/2008, -9/+2Ok, while I admit there are probably SOME things that carry over, it's not often. The point is that this is talking about Diebold voting machines and I'm talking about the typical MO for these two sites. Don't mistake my distaste for EXTREMELY biased and sensationally desperate news sites (every bit as equally biased as Fox News) for discrediting anything ever said about Diebold.
My point is that these sites are the counterpoint to O'Reilly, Hannity, etc. and that's not exactly a good thing. They just make objective journalism far less necessary. Sensational journalism is the only way all these media outlets to get traction on the internet. - swrostmore, on 07/31/2008, -0/+10While I agree the Rawstory and Huffington are obviously partisan, comparing them to right-wing propagandists is stupid. When has O'Reilly or Hannity EVER broken a story that has been covered in the mainstream news? What they do is not journalism. Rawstory does engage in journalism, whether or not it is partisan is almost besides the point, because what they report is TRUE regardless of whether or not you agree with the slant they put on it.

Sonny Purdue is the first Republican Governor of Georgia since 1872.- bakstuh, on 07/31/2008, -1/+14Sonny Purdue is a serious *****-bag. If you drive through any backwater redneck region of Georgia....i.e. 9/10ths of the state...you're likely to see big signs with rebel flags all over with the slogan "Sonny Lied" on them. The signs are complaining about Purdue's campaign promise to restore the old Georgia flag with the confederate flag on it....which he did not do....which is maybe the only good thing that he's done in office.
The Sonny Lied posters were much more popular a few years ago, but you can still see them in around. - str1fe, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonny_Perdue#Controve ... for a proper clickable link :)

He started the flag mess, by replacing an arguably racist flag with an inarguably ugly flag (that still had the stars and bars on it). At least the 'Sonny' flag looks decent (though somehow it is still racist, or more racist than the ugly flag)
And he's an ex-Democrat. He switched so he could run against Roy Barnes. - VitriolAndAngst, on 07/31/2008, -2/+1Nah. A lot of the people in Georgia still think the Media is Liberal. Neal Boortz is the brightest man ever. And that the Iraq war was for our own good.
Propaganda has a foothold in Georgia, and I notice that a lot of Conservatives and NeoCons are a lot quieter today than they used to be. But I just overheard a Landscaping Contractor say; "Yeah, now that George got those drilling rights, that should sure help the price of gas." The guy selling the materials, just nodded. We have some seriously ignorant people who think they are smart. It's too much for them to remember that the price of gas ALWAYS goes down before an election.

Fixed voting machines are a problem for everyone because they will always go to where the money is. Corruption is something we should all be against. It doesn't matter if it benefits your party or not, because if you play with this sort of fire, it will come back to burn you later. - Waiting2awake, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4With all due respect, you seem to be under the impression that the "system" is still fine. It isn't. There are systemic failures in all branches, all balances. The system has been gamed - and while I really respect your decision to help - are you not just propping up a broken system? Putting a body on life support, isn't the same as living.
If you do your job perfect, and even walk the citizens to the both, stand guard at the booth, take their vote and count it correctly - you will then send them to another office. What happens there is out of your control, and I will bet you outside of any public control. That is why, IMO only, what you are doing will ultimately be fruitless, but I wish you the best of luck.
Keep the faith.
- AttilaD, on 07/31/2008, -1/+23Every time I read these articles I roll my eyes and think, "time for the tin-foil hats..."
Then I think some more and realize there's more evidence to support a hacked election than there was for Iraq's WMDs.- Stavrosian, on 07/31/2008, -0/+10The tin-foil hat reaction is understandable. There are plenty of people out there who believe in conspiracies which clearly have no basis in truth, and when we people of the internet, good and true, are bombarded with them daily it's easy to just dismiss every conspiracy claim as nutty.
Unfortunately, this is what has historically been relied upon to convince people to look the other way while nefarious plots are carried out. In years to come, when people study American history and take a close look at this highly controversial period, I suspect they will sit looking at all the evidence we have available to us and wonder just how it is that a nation founded in revolution as a reaction to tyranny blithely sat by and did nothing while democracy was hi-jacked. The family ties, the backdoor deals, the selective hiring, the voter blocking, the swings between exit poll data and actual results described by experts as "statistically impossible" to justify, the incomprehensible decision not to allow a recount, the swathes of colored voters denied their basic right to vote...people will wonder how naive we were to assume that nobody could possibly attempt to corrupt the electoral process. After all, it's not as though we are not aware that such things happen in other parts of the world, are we just so arrogant as to assume that our politicians, whom we see lie, cheat and steal on a daily basis, are somehow above this behavior?
Basically, yes. There's much more evidence, and I believe you are correct to re-evaluate your first impression, reasonable though it initially appears to be.

- zip000, on 07/31/2008, -0/+11I live in Georgia (unfortunately) and one of the biggest deals in voter fraud right now is actually absentee voting. The state government has made it increasingly difficult for people to vote in person, and have, at the same time, made it increasingly easy to vote absentee.
I am also very concerned about diebold as well obviously.- thegreatgazoo, on 07/31/2008, -0/+0How is it harder to vote in person? You can early vote for weeks, or you have 12 hours on election day. You do need an ID, but you need that to live in society.
I seem to remember needing a notarized statement in Missouri to vote absentee, and I don't think that's required in Georgia.
And if you are 'unfortunately' living in Georgia, rumor has it that Delta will take you damn near any place you want to live. Why live somewhere you hate?- zip000, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4Lots of people live in places that they hate due to circumstances that are beyond their control. Sure, I could just up and move elsewhere, but first I'd have to sell my house, find a job wherever it is that I'm moving etc.
I know that fundamentally I have the choice to leave, but practically speaking, it is a long process that I can't realistically undertake right now.
And actually, I kind of like the city that I live in, it just unfortunately happens to be located in Georgia.
It's harder to vote in person than it used to be. It is easier to vote absentee than it used to be. They have added restrictions to in person voting and taken restrictions away from absentee voting; I think that is pretty clear.

- unradical, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4There's a lot of weird stuff happening here in Florida pertaining to the upcoming elections. My father registered to vote late last year as a Democrat, and he still has not received a voter card. My mother changed her affiliation from republican to democrat about a month before he did, and she has still not received her card. I changed my address and got the card within weeks. I know a few other folks who have changed their affiliation to democrat, or who have recently registered to vote and have been waiting months for their cards. I have a feeling November is going to come and these people will not be allowed to vote. My mother called the elections office and she was told they were backed up on "voter cards", which is obviously a lie considering I got mine right away.

- VitriolAndAngst, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5I am in Georgia, and even knowing that Diebold will be rigging the vote -- I must vote. Because I must force them to steal it each time. We cannot complain about rigged elections if we stay home. More and more people are accepting that our elections are manipulated -- people I used to argue with -- now they agree.
So don't stay home. Don't let the bad guys make you quit. If we never give up, they can never really win. Little by little, election by election, we can get good people into politics if we never quit. - dorkino, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3The article states, "What initially raised questions, according to the source, was the behavior of then-Diebold CEO, Bob Urosevich, who personally flew in from Texas and applied the patch in just two counties, DeKalb and Fulton, both Democratic strongholds."
It should be noted that Dekalb and Fulton counties are the two counties that comprise Atlanta proper. - GSnake, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5Maybe 'anonymous' can provoke people to destroy/damage the touch screens. If enough random/anonymous people disable the touch screens as previously mentioned, they'll be forced to go to a paper trail balloting system. If this happens at enough polling locations, you could lead an effective offensive against those slimy bastards that attempt to sway the outcome of the most important election in the history of the known universe.
- cosinezero, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3Seriously? This is one of the best civil disobedience protest ideas I've ever heard. This might actually _work_.
- Hangly, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2One good hack deserves another.
- jlhoben, on 07/31/2008, -0/+9People get 10 years in jail for growing some pot and these scum escape justice? Let's not stand for this any longer!
- DestroyFascism, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1Don't worry, America Won't! In fact they have already sat down...
- LenBaird, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1This is what happens in the New USA. The commoners are aggressively prosecuted for non-crimes and things that shouldn't be crimes while our leaders get away with whatever they want.
- AvangionQ, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2"Documents provided to RAW STORY by a whistleblower close to Cox's office show that one of the key problems Georgia officials were trying to resolve was related to an unauthorized patch installed on machines prior to the election." ... in other words, someone hacked the easily tamperable DieBold voting machines and rigged the election -- a recount is required!
- DestroyFascism, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1It was and the GOP appointed its own team of "mates" or GOP friendly judges to preside over the bench. The victory was a no brainier and the corruption continues.
- gasin, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1I dugg this because I thought the title said "Documents show Georgia's Secretary of State knew of DIABLO"
Man, its a long wait for that game.
:) - beanphoner, on 07/31/2008, -1/+3I did think it odd that my Georgia small town was completely flooded with Ron Paul supporters & signs, but he only managed to get 4% in my county... Seriously, there might have been like one Huckabee sign in the city, thats it!
- WhoWatches, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2Very sad with some retard like hickabilly gets all those votes. Then again, and I'm a native Georgian, the South has completely lost its way. Its been brainwashed since reconstruction to be big fans of central government and coming to heel for the State.
- beanphoner, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1so true.

- ren1999, on 07/31/2008, -1/+2The U.S.A. must ban all electronic voting and all go back to paper voting with braille where you circle the name of the candidate you choose. It is time to end the Bush's Help American Gangster Politicians Steal Your Vote Act.
- 33PercentGod, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1Where I go to vote here in Pennsylvania there's no fancy *****. There's 3 little black boxes where you stand and fill out a sheet of paper. You just fill in the bubbles on the ***** of paper and hand it to the person in charge who then files it with the rest. No computers and all of that *****.
- weebit, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1Gosh people I don't know how the American public can change this because it seems like diebold, and the election officials have full authority, and control. They may of changed to these machines because they knew it would give them the votes they wanted. But speaking from one American to another, the only way this will stop is if the public get involved and do something about it. We can't sit on our tushes this time with earplugs in both ears, and our hands to our sides muttering "woe me". Where to start though? I don't have a clue.
- Kikokun, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2banana republic...
- DestroyFascism, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1Yep. Importing from China. Taking credit from China to support an illegal war..
- DestroyFascism, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1Next you know, voting this way will be compulsory and taking time of work to vote illegal. Then they will ask you inset coins to vote and that vote will be no less rigged than it already is...
America is a con job.
Owned by the oligarchy - camdotcom, on 08/24/2008, -0/+110 other signs your Diebold machine may be faulty!
