Duncan Hunter's son caught receiving donations for earmarks
washingtontimes.com — Defense contractors who received millions of dollars in government earmarks arranged by Rep. Duncan Hunter are now helping to fill the campaign coffers of his son. Officials at several companies have benefited from the pet project spending requests that the veteran Republican lawmaker inserted into often-unrelated legislation.

- pinchduck, on 10/14/2008, -0/+3I agree entirely. The ruling duopoly is so entrenched that even potential reformers, like Obama, will only get a bit of traction. It will take a huge event and a very pissed off populace to overthrow the yolk these two crappy parties have harnessed us to.

- caraipi, on 10/13/2008, -3/+45It's Randy Duke Cunningham all over again. Hunter is best friends with Cunningham and has never come out against him. I guess we know why.
- SheilaNoya, on 10/13/2008, -3/+52Duncan Hunter (R-CA) was part of the Cunnigham investigation in California. So was his friend, Jerry Lewis (the California Republican, not the comedian). Both of them were involved in taking bribes in return for defense contracts, but after Cunningham was arrested Bush interfered and got rid of all the prosecutors involved in the case.
The result was that the case was immediately closed and all records were sealed, which prevented any future investigators from using the evidence already collected against Duncan Hunter and Jerry Lewis.
We've also known about Duncan Hunter's son since at least May of 2008, but nothing will happen to him as long as the Republicans control the Department of Justice. - jasonspurlock, on 10/13/2008, -4/+43Duncan Hunter is Laura Ingraham's bitch boy anyway. This is "Hannity's America."

- mvlazysusan, on 10/14/2008, -0/+2Mike Lumpkin, a retired Navy SEAL
- electricalhero, on 10/13/2008, -15/+3You people act like he killed someone. Liberals get most of their money from Unions. Think they don't put bull *7^% into bills? Line Item Veto, is all we need. The fall of all republics has occurred when the people can vote money into their pockets from the coffers of the government, along with widespread acceptance of homosexuality and the republic has always been followed by a dictatorship. Stop looking at the small issues here. NOW to be fair. All these politicians are lying. They are all corrupt. They are all willing to bend the rules to get what they want for themselves in the name of the people(their constituents). A strong military is a necessity. Clinton shrunk ours and shortly after his rein we were attacked. He had massive contributions by the Chinese government. Who after he was elected he prompted congress to make them a favored nation for trading status(no tariffs). Now all our stuff is made there and not here.(we lost jobs) Bush decided to do nothing about the way oil is speculated and it cost all of America billions more money and the oil companies raked in record profits.(the government received more tax revenue than ever from the oil industry in the process butt screwed everyone for it) Bush has done nothing to help American's. He gave billions of "aid" to Africa to fight aids. However most of it went to the pharmaceutical companies for drugs (not really aid). So you see it is all about power and how to screw people out of money and their rights and their land. We have more restrictions on our rights now in the United States than did the citizens of Nazi Germany. With my feet firmly planted in the middle I tell you do not loose sight of the big picture and the dream of our countries founders. This donation thing is a small issue. All the candidates take money from people and industry that expects them to help them out, in the future some how. JD

- LoriKG, on 10/13/2008, -1/+14Why hasn't the San Diego Union-Tribune picked up on this? Can you believe the guy who actually has to go ask his dad how to respond to questions (Hunter Jr.) was endorsed by the U-T? This same guy who is receiving donations to his campaign from the folks his daddy awarded earmarks to. Talk about unethical. I, don't believe that most of the republicans in the 52nd district are smart enough to understand the complexities of ethics and ethical behavior. Hunter should have refused those donations. But now, at least I understand what kind of man he is.
Lumpkin definitely has a better grasp of the issues and about how to use earmarks judiciously. He's an expert in national security, and wants to make sure social security is intact for his parents as well as for his grandchildren. And, as an aside, following the collapse of the banking industry and the stock market, the U-T came out with an editorial saying we should still privatize social security. Talk about out of step with reality! - Grossmont, on 10/13/2008, -1/+6Actually the San Diego Union-Tribune did write a story about this during the primaries:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/politics/voterg ...
But, it doesn't matter how much publicity this gets. Duncan Hunter, Jr will win. It's a very Republican district and Duncan Hunter is a well-known name in the area.
"Vote Jeff Johnson... The name you know!"- LoriKG, on 10/13/2008, -0/+3Yeah, now that you mention it, I do remember that story. But it didn't take the Hunter family's ethics into question. I believe that reporter doesn't like to dig or work very hard.
- Grossmont, on 10/13/2008, -0/+4Quoting LoriKG: "I believe that reporter doesn't like to dig or work very hard."
Not many do. The U-T got their one Pulitzer and now they seem to like to rest on their laurels.
- jodimcmullen, on 10/13/2008, -2/+16The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree. His father is the neocon from hell, and knee deep in Cunningtham scandal. He even kind of looks and acts like old Tom DeLay.
- moliver21, on 10/13/2008, -1/+6I was going to post a comment that simply said, "Who is Duncan Hunter and why should I care?"
Then I saw HeartlandUSA's first comment which read, "Another Republican taking bribes...." and realized my question had already been answered. Thanks HeartlandUSA.- LoriKG, on 10/13/2008, -1/+7Thanks for caring. Hopefully your representative isn't like Duncan Hunter Sr. or Jr.
Hunter Sr. has cost the American tax payers billions of dollars in earmarks, for things the military doesn't want. The jet mentioned in the article isn't the only thing that we spent money on that the military doesn't want. He also spent millions of earmark money on software that is in development by L3, which the Air Force is scheduled to throw out as soon as it arrives.
My point here is that Jr. will waste as much of our tax dollars as his dad did if not more. He sees no problem with earmarks being used this way.
I hope he doesn't win. If you're a voter in the 52nd district, please do all Americans a favor and vote for Mike Lumpkin.
- LoriKG, on 10/13/2008, -1/+7Thanks for caring. Hopefully your representative isn't like Duncan Hunter Sr. or Jr.

THE DEMS CAUSED THIS ACORN DRIVEN BAIL OUT, DUDES. Do the homework.
I DO NOT APPRECIATE OBAMA HIRING FRANKLIN RAINES, who made MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OFF FANNIE FREDDIE. Duncan Hunter is a great American and at this point I could care less about a few thousand bucks. Give me my country back. Give me a separation of economy and state, as the Founding Fathers spelled out! WTF is our government doing? IT IS THE DEM LED CONGRESS that shoved us into this mess. - TsuruchiBrian, on 10/14/2008, -2/+4If you happen to live in California's 52nd congressional district like I do. You have more than 2 choices. In addition to Mike Lumpkin and Duncan Hunter Jr., there is also the Libertarian candidate Mike Benoit. I have met him a few times and he is a really good guy. He is very similar to Ron Paul in both positions and philosophy.
http://www.benoit08.com/
Although I do not plan on voting for his son, I do have to say that I am happy that Duncan Hunter did not vote for the bail out both times. I even called his headquarters and thanked him (via one of his staffers). - aadyss, on 10/14/2008, -8/+2Under an Obama administration, one need not worry about earmarks for the military. He will gut the military to pay for his entitlements. You know...earmarks with another name.
- peticsu, on 10/14/2008, -1/+5mustve been the illegal immigrants that forced him to take the money

- LoriKG, on 10/14/2008, -1/+0Those darn illegal searches keep getting in the way...
- Skywise, on 10/14/2008, -3/+2No that was a Democrat, so it's perfectly ethical and legal.
- bjornski, on 10/14/2008, -0/+2Nope. But his ass should be in jail too.
- Midtowner, on 10/14/2008, -3/+1Both parties are quite adept at lining the pockets of their financial contributors. This, unfortunately, barely rises to the level of a news story (because news stories should be reporting on something actually new or noteworthy).
If the legislative ethics committees were to actually inquire into and meet out punishment for quid pro quo relationships between legislators and their benefactors, we'd likely need an entirely new Congress.
-- and that's not necessarily a bad thing. - Powdem, on 10/14/2008, -0/+4What Duncan Jr. won't give you is separation of church and state. He's all about legislating morality like many uber right wing republicans. As far as weather Lumpkin has a chance, Duncan is running scared as the pole #s he's seeing right now put them neck and neck. Lumpkin has a huge volunteer base and he has been campaigning hard since January. Hunter has hardly been heard from till recently because he believes he has a right to inherit his fathers seat and the name is all he needs. Two weeks ago he was refusing to debate but now he feels he has to. It's too close not to. If Duncan D is elected, he will be a freshman congressman in the minority party. No power to do anything. Lumpkin has been told by the Democratic leadership that he will have his choice of committees and will move into a leadership role right away due to his incredible experience in national security and the year and a half he spent as liaison between congress and all military special forces. He was deputy commander joint special forces for Operation Iraqi Freedom. He also has an lot of support from 52nd district republicans and veterans.
- LoriKG, on 10/14/2008, -0/+0You make an interesting point about separation of church and state. Any thinking religious person would want to keep them separate.
- Skywise, on 10/14/2008, -5/+2Where's the Digg articles from the Huffington Post about the earmarks that went to Pelosi's Husband?

Or how about the entire congress. He has more contributions from all the failed banks than McCain. I guess it doesn't matter since the dollar is collapsing anyways. no thanks to people like Obama. - Matricul8tr, on 10/14/2008, -2/+1You're all correct, they're all corrupt, both parties most incumbents...question is, who are YOU gonna vote for?
Oh...and how will Diebold tally you vote. - jraymilton, on 10/14/2008, -1/+2One of the best things about supporting Ron Paul (despite all the whiners, who now can see a nice "I told you so" on their 401k's, so I needn't say those 4 hated words) was the fact that his family actually kicked ass. MULTIPLE Doctors as kids, ONE (count her) wife over more than 5 DECADES, etc. Those who cluelessly accused them of "hate" invariably have NOT met them. McCain's a statist, Obama's a socialist, Nader's a communist, Barr's an *****, Baldwin's a religious nutcase whose party platform is scary. I voted for Charles Jay in order to say "***** you" to all the right people.
- sewollef, on 10/14/2008, -2/+1Sadly no one was watching. And the world passed you by without so much as a nod in your direction. Shame really.
