"Failed to prevent" is not the same as "caused" - and it might be reasonably argued that in the absence of humanity, no such controlled burns would have occurred. On the other hand, the whole mess COULD have been avoided, and it's a damn shame that it wasn't - just in terms of human cost and suffering. At the end of the day, I still won't be starting any serious hand-wringing over "tragic" CO2 levels until I see a comparison between this and your average basic volcanic eruption, which CANNOT be prevented...
