Fraud in Mexican Presidential Election
cepr.net — The Center for Economic And Policy Research in Washington did an analysis of the election results and a court ordered partial recount. They conclude that: "...this data may provide important statistical evidence with regard to the question of fraud. It is difficult to think of a legitimate reason for withholding this information."

- gophernut, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4They have been following this on Democracy Now! for a long time now. It's not adding up to me, I think the Bush Administration has a hand in this keeping Lopez Obrador out of office
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1And in other news... researchers have determined that ice is cold
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So Democracy Now! has evidence of US tampering with this election? I'd love to see that. Can you post it here? Thanks.
- gobari66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yes the past election in mexico, was an election of the gobern people, and the bussines man's man, like Coca Cola, Bimbo, Sabritas, Walmart, Televisa and Tv Azteca, all this companys make all the pork things to make that the IFE make a fraude.
Las pasadas eleciones fueron unas elecciones de estado!, no al fraude, no a la imposicion. - Shalomit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2in the eyes of many mexicans, a mega fraud has been orchested by Vicente Fox and the leading Party "PAN". If that had not been the case, All the ballots would have been opened by request of presidential al candidate Felipe Calderon, but that not only did not occur, Calderon himself was the greatest opponent on this matter along with all the IFE and TRIFE officicials. No legal reason for that , just simply not a reason.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wishing for something doesn't make it come true. All I've heard so far are suppositions against U.S. President Bush and Mexican President Fox, without any actual evidence of a crime being committed. I know a lot of people think mob mentality is the way to get things done. But even mobs can be brainwashed by false accusations. Has a neutral party, such as the U.N., been asked to oversee these recounts?
- tlan2007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It's natural. Bush, as a man of the oil industry, wants their cronies to have a slice of every oil pie in the world. Considering the troubles with Venezuela, it's only natural that they want to have the Mexican oil under their full control. The energy business, the only thing that matters.
- celulita, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2The past elections are fake, there is a mega fraud. It is an state imposition coming from PAN party and Vicente FOX.

- aureus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Elections in Mexico are corrupted by a few black minded people in power. They are afraid to loose their impunity and privileges. They have fear because Lopez Obrador is going to make the bases of a Republic with a better social system (Not a socialist system, but a state with a better level of democracy) and is going to begin and conclude many investigations about corruption in my country.
So, the business men, the electoral institutions, the Presidency and the High Court are making a fraud to keep their privileges out of danger. Even, if it results in an open confrontation against the millions of mexicans who voted for a real change.
I´m afraid that with Calderon in power, we will live a Fascist-nazist state of repression.
I don´t want this to happen. - DoeJane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The 'report' on democracynow.org was made by no other than pseudo investigative reporter Greg Palast, who flew to Mexico City on taxpayer money summoned by Luis Mandoki, both with an interest in the independent film industry (see a pattern here?).
Mr. Palast was driven around Mexico City -you'll see him in a taxi, but that was just for theatrical purposes- and mysteriously led to gather -first hand- the "unbiased" testimony of AMLO's supporters only: Mandoki himself, an alleged statician of Mexico's University, and a host of other obscure characters that played a roll in his mexican "hit" investigation. The newspaper you see Palast "reading" is 'La Jornada', pretty much the 'official' newspaper of the radical left.
Those who know Palast's incendiary reporting style, know that his opus must be taken with a grain of salt, or two. Unsuspecting readers/viewers of that report must be aware that the "evidence of fraud" therein presented was immediately rebutted and disproved.
Additionally, the reader/viewer must be aware that the report at hand is 'only' two months old and that no follow-up was ever made. Which leads me to believe that it was an attempt -and a flawed one at that- to strike a media hit.
Caveat emptor. - gandalfgrismx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0In Mexico the only thing that exists is a SECT named “lopezobradorismo”. - deicazah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3
The arithmetical mistakes regarding the counting of votes have been raised to `mathematical' level. The government explains thus the enormous number of ballot box discrepancies. Taking into account that the counting has been made by approximately 10 people, including the representatives of parties, at each ballot box, the government suggestion is that the IQ of those people is touching the ground. In spite of this fact, at the time, the government states that the education has been supported this last six years. At least one (big) lie!- DoeJane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Take a deep breath.....It is my understanding that the losing candidate offered irrefutable proof of electoral fraud at each of his speeches following election day. The first piece of evidence was a video in which a man (dressed in a striped blue shirt) is seen 'stuffing' a ballot box. The person in the video was no other than the presiding official at that voting station, his actions were publicly explained and were approved by the losing candidate's representative. So exhibit 'A' was stricken from the record, so to speak.
Thereafter, it is also my understanding that no credible piece of evidence was ever made public. What followed were a series of hit-and-miss allegations as to the method of "fraud" at hand.
I am positively certain that if the losing candidate had verifiable evidence of a smoking gun, it would have been a prominent element of their case before the Electoral Tribunal.
Since no such proof was submitted, we all should infer that the allegations of 'fraud' have been unsubstantiated, and therefore such claims are false.
Repeating ad-nauseaum that the earth is flat, is like running on ice.

- magoghm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Many scientists have been analyzing the data published by the Mexican Federal Electoral Institute (called IFE). There are many weird patterns that seem to point to election fraud. Here are a few links:

http://em.fis.unam.mx/public/mochan/elecciones/ (in Spanish)
http://macht.arts.cornell.edu/wrm1/pm06.pdf (in english)
The last link is to a paper written by Professor Walter R. Mebane from Cornell University where he applies Benford's law to electoral data, including the 2006 Mexican presidential elections. He concludes that: "The 2BL test results for secciones certainly suggest there are problems with the 2006 presidential vote counts in many Mexican states, although probably not in most of them. More refined analysis is needed to reach sharper conclusions, but the general impression is that more intensive investigation of the election results is in order. That might include doing a manual recount of many—perhaps all—of the individual ballots."- donatelo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2hey guys, not only the numbers given by the scientist showed what really happened in our election but also the manipulation that television is making to the information. - eabuylla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This study adds up to many others that have found clear discrepancies among data sets available. Considering this situation, the privilege groups used the TV and radio against the democracy so they wouldn't lost privilege.
Meaning, the elections were a fraud since the beginning. Now will have a coward as president, because he never was able to front Lopez Obrador.- APE583M, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2We need to spread the truth worldwide. It´s not possible to legitimate an imposed President with the Media force, faking a democratic process which we know never existed. Mexican Media is playing the game of getting people´s minds dumb. We need the counciousness of the councious to wake everybody up. This is no game, Andrés Manuel López Obrador is the legitimate President of all mexicans. Felipe Calderón will fall due to his own lies weight. He is not even convenient to Bush and u.s. internal security. He is not convenient to democracy. He is a FRAUD.
- DoeJane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You are wrong, educated people went to school, where a criteria is formed and intelligence is enhanced. Educated people read several newspapers and magazines and are adamant (no, not the british singer) to relinquish their capacity to forge an opinion of their own. Education has nothing to do with money or skin color, so refrain from using worn arguments.

I HAVE G R E A T NEWS FOR YOU!! :) :)
The 39Th Article of Constitution of Mexico, indicates that Mexican citizens have the right to straight to alter or to modify their government at any time . We are going to do it with our Legitimate President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Based on the articles 40 and the 41 of our Constitution which indicates that when the powers of the Union are corrupted, as it is happening right now, the Nation must rescue the integrity and honor of its Institutional life by any means, that is indeed, what our winner PRESIDENT ANDRES MANUEL LOPEZ OBRADOR is trying to do. He MUST EXPEL the cancerous power of the Republic Attn: Lic Antonio Solorio Perez. Teacher of Constitutional Rights.
- amoLetelier, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Is funny how democracy is so important to the international community, specially the US and EU when the candidate that was robbed is close to their interests. When said candidate is close to the interests of his/her own people, democracy is no longer important and the US and EU allow a fraud to happen infront of their noses. The later is what happened in Mexico, as Calderón is more convenient to have as president, more convenient to the interests of large corporations. The fact that he didn´t actually win is secondary. This is just inmoral.
- adgs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Several Mexican scientists have found irregularities in the behavior of the electoral results based on statistical and probabilistic analysis. senderodelpeje.blogspot.com - mafevel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The fraud is obvious and insulting. The federal government didn't just let the fraud to operate, but was a part of it too. We can't trust our institutions, we can't trust the government. It's time for a huge change in Mexico, I just hope it's pacific. If it is not, the government will have full responsibility on it. We are tired of not being heard. We are tired of being betrayed by the people who we supposedly chose to lead us. 60 millions of poor people in a country rich in natural resources speaks for it self.
- chimalpopocatl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hey guys,
There are at least two frauds in the last Mexican elections, one that I believe is the most grotesque is that key actors aligned themselves to deny what is Mexican democratic development over the last few decades. By this I mean that Mexican democratic process started long ago, even before 1988 presidential elections. Further in the middle of the 90s Mexicans rearranged the institutional design in order to guarantee crystal clear elections. As a result of all that Fox was able not only to won back in 2000, but to be recognised by president Zedillo and the PRI. In that regard there was a fraud to the democratic process itself.
The second fraud is the one of the last July 2nd. I was operated by a parallel structure belonging to one of the most questioned politician in Mexico, Elba Esther Gordillo. In addition to this, in the political campaign rightist party (PAN) in association with president fox and other actors, (most of them benefited from fox administration) like mass media owners, backed up, financially supported and put their hands on a black propaganda against Mr. Lopez Obrador.
Those two reasons make strongly support the idea of fully recounting, for at least having clear what exactly happened in the election. I would also like to have a strong position from the magistrates regarding the intromission of the president and all others who spent a lot of money in attacking Mr. Lopez Obrador.
Sufragio efectivo, No imposicion! - ovferr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The Fraud committed in the Mexican election is evident. Only those who don't want to see it can say everything was right. We will fight against fascism in Mexico, they won't pass. People will prevail.

Yo YA tengo PRESIDENTE . . . . se llama ANDRÉS MANUEL LÓPEZ OBRADOR.
- silenciosa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Estoy en la misma postura que los que estamos haciendo comentarios a este respecto, en la actualidad en nuestro país vivimos un fraude historico, que decididamente esta ignorando el mandato popular que hicimos en las pasadas elecciones: Presidente Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador!!! www.elsenderodelpeje.com - mochan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Thanks for posting this analysis made by The Center for Economic And Policy Research in Washington. A few colleagues and I have done similar analysis and have posted them in a couple of web pages (most in Spanish):
http://em.fis.unam.mx/public/mochan/elecciones/
http://analisis.elecciones2006.unam.mx/
In particular, an analysis of further inconsistencies of the kind reported by the Center for Economic and Policy research may be found in
http://em.fis.unam.mx/public/mochan/elecciones/paperMochan.pdf
Again, it is in spanish, but the main results are contained in two tables (table 3 and 4) which compare the number of ballots in the electoral boxes to the number of blank ballots at the beggining and end of the election, the number of voters compared to the number of people that registered their vote at each electoral station, the number of ballots compared to the number of registered voters, and the number of votes compared to the number of ballots found in each box. For each of the four tests, I found tens of thousands of stations where the data disagrees and the total number of votes. voters and ballots involved are of the order of millions. The election was presumably won by a mere quarter of a million votes and it is with data of this quality that the winner will be certified probably tomorrow morning.
