- HanFastolfe, on 07/14/2008, -2/+21It takes quite a bit of douchbaggery to get me to this point: Can't we just send these scumbags to some place worse than Gitmo? If there ever were poster childeren for extraordinary rendition, and water boarding just for fun these people qualify. Hopefully, principled Liberals, and Conservatives can agree that these peoples time should have been up (being in people faces) a long time ago. I know, I know, free speech... meh...
/rant off- card51short, on 07/14/2008, -6/+4No. We can't send protesters to Gitmo you complete lunatic.
This is America. Let the nucases proclaim their nutcasery.
I can't believe people dugg you up...this is a sad state in America these days.- jcm267, on 07/14/2008, -3/+14So you, carD, are siding with the "God Hates Fags" people who disrupt innocent peoples' (including our soldiers') funerals? Why am I not surprised?
- HanFastolfe, on 07/14/2008, -4/+15I conceded freedom of speech, and that I was ranting at the end. Did you fail at reading comprehension? There's nothing wrong with demonstrating a bit of angst, from time to time. I have a feeling that those who dugg it sympathize with the frustration. Lighten up, Francis.
- dshPls, on 07/14/2008, -3/+11If they didn't get any attention they'd stop. WBC just wants hate directed towards them so they can sue and make a big deal out it. I agree with the ACLU defending them and I'd suggest that if everyone just stopped paying attention they'd get bored and commit mass suicide.
- mikesbaker, on 07/14/2008, -1/+14they should be prosecuted under obscenity law. not all speech is protected speech.
- card51short, on 07/14/2008, -6/+5no i'm siding with free speech...I don't have to agree with them to agree with their right to speak.
- DrDreyfus, on 07/14/2008, -3/+5The founding fathers who built this country on the principals of equality for all would massacre these poor excuses for humans for raping the right to freedom of speech.
- vault, on 07/14/2008, -0/+11card, it's not just their right to speak, it's specifically the issue of causing a disturbance during a deeply emotional and painful moment for the family of the deceased.
I wouldn't have a problem with them protesting in front of the White House or some government office, but picketing outside a funeral should be illegal and it currently is in a few states. Just like defamation isn't protected by the first amendment, nor is yelling 'fire' in a crowded theater, there are limits to the first amendment which any adult can appreciate.
I'm not saying the press should be restricted or public demonstrations should be subject to government approval, certainly not. I'm saying a prohibition on funeral protests is a standard the vast majority of the country agrees with, much like they wouldn't support 3 am telemarketing calls defended by free speech. - card51short, on 07/14/2008, -2/+2hey if it's illegal then arrest them...until then, what can we do? Take the law into our own hands or what?
Don't think I like this guys at all...it makes me totally sick. But so do most television programs, movies and video games...doesn't mean we should ban them.
I think it's a good way they are coming out and telling everyone "WE ARE HEARTLESS ASSHOLES...YOU DO NOT WANT TO MEET US OR HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH US!"
I wish every ***** wore those badges... - HanFastolfe, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4@card51short
"hey if it's illegal then arrest them...until then, what can we do? Take the law into our own hands or what? "
That's exactly what you implied in this comment section, when responding to PolishLogic, about a botched ATF raid.
You stated:
"However, if they were at my friend's funeral I'd be in jail for a while, that's for sure."
- Fordi, on 07/14/2008, -8/+1I get the angst - but to apply torture for what is essentially victimless slander (that is, lying about ideas) seems cruel and unusual.
It'd be better to slap them with a large fine anytime they said anything that was demonstrably untrue (e.g., the earth is 6,000 years old; macroevolution has never been observed; Intelligent Design is a science). You'd see the more exploitative groups disappearing quickly.
It wouldn't do anything about the WBC, though; because of their decidedly bent interpretation of biblical scripture, nothing they say can be demonstrated to be false; "God Hates Fags", for example, refers to a biblical entity and has biblical backing in Leviticus. It may be distasteful, but their fictional God does, apparently, hate homosexuals. Others are succinctly ambiguous, such as "Bush Killed Them"; without asking, "Them" could refer to a hive of fire ants on his property.
Though, they can probably be fined for things like the US Marines sign posted up there - but that would require an awkward study into homosexuality rates in the US Marines.- DrDreyfus, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5Homosexuality is mentioned twice within the entire Old Testament.
Homosexuality is no worse than eating shellfish or skipping the Sabbath. - Fordi, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I didn't say it wasn't. I said that the WBC couldn't be prosecuted under a hypothetical 'knowing spread of mistruths' laws because 'God Hates Fags' isn't, technically, untrue. It's also not technically true. It's one of many things that deals with a fictional character, and as such can only be 'canonical', which it absolutely is not, as canon is decided by what the fans will accept as canon.
(Mind you, by the WBC's interpretation, shellfish eaters are also abominations. Be careful what you deem as literal.)
Holy crap. I think I must have won the 'offend everyone' game. - HanFastolfe, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1"I get the angst - but to apply torture for what is essentially victimless slander (that is, lying about ideas) seems cruel and unusual."
Hence, I included the "/rant off" at the end, in a manner similar to "/sarcasm" that is used sometimes. Implying that my frustration with WBC is not what I'd really do to them, more like the dichotomy that exists in all of us.
"It'd be better to slap them with a large fine anytime they said anything that was demonstrably untrue"
That's going to be covered under freedom of speech. People say all kinds of stupid things, and it's covered. Sure there are limits (inciting a riot), but these dirtbags seem to skirt the limits, and stay just to the legal side with their stupidity.
"I said that the WBC couldn't be prosecuted under a hypothetical 'knowing spread of mistruths' laws"
It's a good thing we don't have such laws. A very large section of the internet would just, go away. The level for abuse from a government agency that would decide would be epic, probably affecting something that everyone (on the individual level) likes eventually. - Fordi, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Perhaps, 'knowing misrepresentation of the truth' is a better term. That is, it would be illegal to represent something as true that it is known to be untrue or unknown, without parody.
Actually, this is pretty well covered as 'fraud', but only when there is some material asset at stake. My only real argument here is that individuals' misconceptions have negative value for society.
Of course, you're right; a law or precedent like that would be wide open for abuse. That's why I keep these things in the hypothetical, rather than writing my congressman.
- DrDreyfus, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5Homosexuality is mentioned twice within the entire Old Testament.

- vault, on 07/14/2008, -1/+24I guess this is no surprise for a group that pickets soldier funerals. Absolutely disgusting.
- PolishLogic, on 07/14/2008, -2/+21Where's a good ol' botched ATF raid on a religious group resulting in massive casualties, when you need one?
- card51short, on 07/14/2008, -10/+3yes! Please Gubbament, help me from these people proclaiming their free speech!!
If we were in Soviet Russia, you would be spot on, my friend.
If people want to have a KKK rally, GO FOR IT!
It just points out to the rest of us who NOT to associate with. Do they really deserve to die for being complete heartless morons though? Once they start hurting people, we can talk.
However, if they were at my friend's funeral I'd be in jail for a while, that's for sure.- mikesbaker, on 07/14/2008, -2/+13yes they do deserved to die and burn in hell. it is what they wish on lots of other people so it is only fair that I wish it on them.
- PolishLogic, on 07/14/2008, -1/+10Well, if I had to choose between the Branch Davidians dying or Phelps and his merry band of *****, I'd choose the latter.
I'm actually looking forward to Phelps dying, because I'd love to see that funeral protest. - card51short, on 07/14/2008, -9/+2well mikesbaker, i'm glad you're not in charge. Because once you leave free speech open to interpretation, all hell will break loose.
- card51short, on 07/14/2008, -10/+3yes! Please Gubbament, help me from these people proclaiming their free speech!!
- mikesbaker, on 07/14/2008, -3/+17Kill them with fire
- Fordi, on 07/14/2008, -12/+2Oh, for the love of god. They're protesting Tony Snow's funeral. For once, they're doing something vaguely useful. Let 'em be.
- DrDreyfus, on 07/14/2008, -1/+7Jesus ***** Christ man. His family and friends deserve some peace.
Regardless of how big of an ***** you think he was, he obviously felt like he was doing the right thing.
- DrDreyfus, on 07/14/2008, -1/+7Jesus ***** Christ man. His family and friends deserve some peace.

- unnes, on 07/14/2008, -0/+16Just think of them as the world's greatest trolls, and all of a sudden their massive asshattery becomes not just unimportant, but even amusing.
- card51short, on 07/14/2008, -5/+3exactly, sir. It is THEIR problem not ours.
All You can do is shrug them off or they win.- KMye, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6So could you just be coherent and reasonable in all threads, or are you going to start up the troll act again tomorrow?
- card51short, on 07/14/2008, -5/+3exactly, sir. It is THEIR problem not ours.
- punx, on 07/14/2008, -2/+16I'll tell you what I am just waiting to see. These POS's picket someone's funeral, the mother or father of the soldier just happens to have a concealed weapons permit and is carrying. Goodbye Westboro, and hello temporary insanity defense.
- TRMarchesano, on 07/14/2008, -1/+7Best reply I've heard... it would work too...
- KMye, on 07/14/2008, -1/+16I thought these people had been sued into oblivion, or brought up on criminal charges or something along those lines?
- Hortnon, on 07/14/2008, -1/+14Yes, but that's clearly not going to stop them...
- onetimer, on 07/14/2008, -0/+18While I would be opposed to the government taking away their 1st amendment right to free speech, I fully support any private group of citizens that want to shut up these monsters forever.
- COINTELPROAgent, on 07/14/2008, -0/+13I agree with this. What's with all the fantasies of government action? Bad people use good rights for bad purposes, it has happened since forever.
When they protest a funeral they can be arrested under existing laws without adding more restrictions to other people's rights to legitimate forms of protest.
I think that if Tony Snow were told beforehand that they were going to protest his funeral he would have had a good laugh about that.
- COINTELPROAgent, on 07/14/2008, -0/+13I agree with this. What's with all the fantasies of government action? Bad people use good rights for bad purposes, it has happened since forever.
- JessicaLF77, on 07/14/2008, -0/+20They're planning a 'protest' just outside the gates at Ft. Bragg tomorrow. As much as I want to drive by and throw rocks at them, I know it's what they want. But it doesn't stop me from daydreaming about it. ;)
- ssn697, on 07/14/2008, -0/+18I wish they didn't get under my skin as much as they do. It just REALLY gets me pissed that they try to ruin other peoples most private moments.
Was going to type what I REALLY want to throw at them, but I can see one of my stalkers reporting me...- Herkimer56, on 07/14/2008, -0/+17Flaming bags of dog *****?
- card51short, on 07/14/2008, -16/+1ssn don't worry we all know how you feel about free speech in america...no need to proclaim it.
Good thing no one is going to listen to a senile old man. - DrDreyfus, on 07/14/2008, -3/+12@card51short
Go suck a *****.
Stay on one of your other accounts you piece of *****. - card51short, on 07/15/2008, -8/+2I have only had one Digg account my entire Digging career.
- ssn697, on 07/14/2008, -0/+18I wish they didn't get under my skin as much as they do. It just REALLY gets me pissed that they try to ruin other peoples most private moments.
- TRMarchesano, on 07/14/2008, -1/+7I AM WRITING THIS IN ALL CAPS FOR A REASON BECAUSE I THINK WE MAY BE MISSING AN OPPORTUNITY...
Anyone in the area that they plan to protest should DEMAND the Dept. of Child Services (even though I despise them) should be called out and asked why there are children carrying signs and wearing shirts that say such things.... THEY ALWAYS bring their kids out with them and that's the worst part of this.....- jerger23, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1One of them was actually brought up on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor in Sarpy County, Nebraska for a protest where one of the children stomped on Old Glory (a misdemeanor in Nebraska). She's also been charged with disturbing the peace and negligent child abuse (for allowing the child to participate in a potentially dangerous protest). She's challenged the constitutionality of the law against trampling the Flag and I don't know the status of the case, but the ever present ACLU has offered their support of her defense. The ACLU offer was turned down because of their support of gay rights. Talk about irony.
- Evilena, on 07/14/2008, -2/+4 I would consider it an honor to have the Phelps family protesting at my funeral. I am not sure if Tony Snow deserves this honor.
- card51short, on 07/15/2008, -4/+3you know what...that's a great point.
If the Phelps family doesn't protest my funeral than they were satisfied with my life, right?
Definitely don't want that!
- card51short, on 07/15/2008, -4/+3you know what...that's a great point.
