Infuriated George W. Bush says, "Whatever we have done is legal!"
thought-criminal.org — Last year, enacting Sen. John McCain's anti-torture measure, Congress attempted to draw a clear line between acceptable and unacceptable treatment of prisoners for anyone acting in the name of the United States. Now the Bush administration wants to blur the line and possibly erase it.

- sanman, on 10/12/2007, -50/+3I have no problems with any terrorist being tortured and even made to beg for their life. They do it to their enemies, and so it's fair that it should be done to them. Not interested in any political correctness or tender treatment for those who themselves don't respect the Geneva Convention. You want to be protected from torture? Then don't practice it -- don't behead people on camera. For those who say "oh dear! we will lose the moral highground!" -- I say screw that, just retain plausible deniability. The US had people tortured during the wars in Central America, and Nicaragua & Co were still defeated (defeated *because* of the will to use harsh methods against them.)
Wars aren't won by gentlemen, they're lost by them.
Terrorists can and should be terrorized. That's what will make them afraid to attack -- because there are worse things you can give a man than death. The more we make them understand that, the less they'll consider death as their convenient option.
Oh yeah -- get their families too. Even if a person doesn't care about their own life, there's usually someone out there whose suffering would make even the most ferocious zealot squeamish.
Moral fretfulness over that? No problem -- just work according to plausible deniability. Use 3rd party torturers, etc, etc. I never saw Saddam or Hafez Assad suffering lots of bombings, because the bombers' families would be rounded up. It's stupid that tougher methods could be used against Central American guerrillas than against Taliban.

- bugsy187, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21@sanman
The US has been supporting torture using regimes for years. Terrorism is the latest excuse to wield it. It's been used in south and central America, and southeast Asia to crush populist movements and ensure the flow of capital to western investors. Democratically elected leaders have been kicked out of office with the direct support of Washington, because it was more profitable to have a military dictatorship. The problem with torture is that it's amoral for anyone to use and no government or vigilante group can be trusted to wield it. Not you, not me, and not a person in Washington. You may rationalize it's use for "terrorists" today, but any dissident voice is a potential target (Just look how loosely the PATRIOT act defines terrorism, for example). Aside from that, no sane person wants to live in a world that's a competition to be the most torturous freak. It's obviously not a desirable world. Other means are available to capture or eliminate dangers in the world. Torture isn't even reported as reliable for extracting information. They are more effective means not rooted in ideological fanaticism, racism, or tyranny. - fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21@sanman

1) The Shah of Iran, which of course led to the '79 revolution, the hostage crisis, and the unsuprising fact that Iran gets its back up whenever the US tries to tell it what to do.
2) Saddam Hussein, who we supported in attacking Iran after the '79 revolution
3) The mujahadein in Afghanistan, which helped that sterling fellow, Osama Bin Ladin, get his training and his start.
I wonder what happened to all those countries...

Bush has made America (and therefore, all Americans) the bad guy. He's broken the law and he's acted in ways that are despicable, ways that dehumanize us as Americans, ways that destroy the Law of the Land.
Congresspeople, I believe it is now time to begin impeachment proceedings. In fact, you're late. Failing to call Bush and his regime to answer for his crimes against all of humanity will be yet another dark stain on America that will last forever.- ThreeE, on 10/12/2007, -27/+1yadayadayada

- CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -17/+5I have heard a lot of complaining about torture of prisoners, etc. I'm not taking a position on whether wnat has actually happend is right or wrong, because frankly I don't have enough information to make that call, and I'm willing to bet that most of the readers of Digg don't either. What I would like to here are some constructive alternatives from people who actually know and understand what is happening, given the circumstances, which are that there is a group of militants that want to destroy western culture. Not just the US, but Europe as well. How do you negotiate with someone who wants nothing, other than to destroy you? How do you get information out of someone who thinks they will be rewarded as a martyr? Don't make the mistake of thinking that these people think like YOU do, have the same desires as you, have the same morals as you, etc.
- inkgrok, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8First you have to really understand their motives and mindset. Al Qaeda's goal is not to destroy the western world but to establish theocratic rule in central asia and the middle east. If you mistake their goal you will make tactical mistakes in battling them.
Second that torture does not give you good information. You can get much better information through infiltration, good interrogation and information gathering. - perogi21, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Don't make the mistake of thinking that an eye for an eye is the way to go.

long live digg, the best news source on the net!- CatalystGhost, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8You know, at one point it amazed me when I realized that most people on the side against Bush could actually spell and capitalize online, whereas those who favor Bush seem to have troubles finding the shift key... - lamestory, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4I actually don't like Bush - the comment was meant to mock the Nazi trolls that mod-down anything that convicts Bush. It's called sarcasm - shift key optional.
- helix400, on 10/12/2007, -29/+5It seems Digg users and President Bush have one thing in common. They have no problem repeating the same information. This story is a duplicate: http://digg.com/political_opinion/Matt_Lauer_goes_after_Bush_over_secret_prisons_and_torture_
But as others have told me, duplicates are ok around here, and the reason given has been summarized well by Bush:

I'll have to make a note of that one for future use. Pointing out when Bush's tactics are eerily similar to his opponents tactics apparently gets a fast and strong reaction.
I mean, this is a duplicate story after all. That much is obvious. It appears that the left has taken over Digg.. Oh well, there goes another great site down the crapper... Honestly, I think we are in our rights to torture anyone we wish, do you actually think Amnesty International and any of those other groups are going to bother any other country that tortures prisoners? Where were they when children where being tortured, raped and murdered by Saddam? Where were these wonderful groups? Off bothering someone else who won't fight back, afraid to step in where they might actually do some good. So why do we have to play by the 'rules' when the terrorists don't? They don't follow the Geneva conventions in a time of war so why should they be under their rule? They should be treated as they treat everyone else, with no remorse or guilt for what they do. We should take the terrorists that we do catch and puclically behead them, and of course broadcast it all over the internet, I can tell you that if we 'play' like they do things will change quickly.- reed311, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I think you should be arrested and put in prison without the option of consulting a lawyer or knowing the charges against you.
The problem is, the US has been playing very dirty in the Middle East and this is what has gotten us in trouble with these peolple in the first place. A group of people just doesn't wake up one day and decide to hate another, as much as you guys want to dumb it down to that. - exsst, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Riiight.. Yeah, like wars yeah?.. Well, if they start a war, we need to create another war !! YAY!! and then they create a war after that, inwhich we do again.. Yes, fun fun fun! wars are just brilliant aren't they? they solve everything!!
Sorry, but I don't usually result in personal insults, but you must be ***** 12-14 years old.
You aren't going to solve anything with war. - helix400, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3I have to agree with reed311.
While I personally think that all terrorists should be tortured to no end, the problem is...abuse of that priviledge. You start letting allowing terrorists to get tortured, and far more innocent people will get the same treatment. The US government isn't perfect you know.
But it if was prerfect...then torture those who deserve it. - exsst, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Also, hasen't it ever crossed your mind that, if we snoop to their level, we are as bad as them?..
Idiot. - helix400, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3"You aren't going to solve anything with war."

the left has taken over digg? i think it's more like common sense and being disgustingly ashamed of our government is pushing people to take a stand for what is right.
terrorist: one who governs by terrorism or intimidation. adj; characteristic of someone who employs terrorism (especially as a political weapon)
remind you of anyone? who pushes terror down our throats, who politicizes it? and who is running this country? who is trying to abolish the laws on war crimes? who instigated torture of prisoners in the last 6 years? who decided to make secret CIA torture camps? who created extraordinary rendition?
is anyone coming to mind yet? when was the last time you were held at gunpoint by an insurgent? when was the last time bin laden's mercenaries raped and murdered families in san diego? or killed a walmart shopper and planted a shovel next to him?
how many terror plots have been thwarted? oh, the chicago sears tower eh? yeah, well when i get back from tatooine with a fresh supply of zap zap guns, i'm going to blow up our 2nd moon.
i'll ask you this, who is terrorizing who..
who has put heavy restrictions on what you can do and say in THIS COUNTRY, THE USA? who details you for hours or days because your name sort of matches someone else's on a secret list...and you're a US senator.
who is a suspected terrorist because they support the US Constitution? who serves a year in prison, forced medications, forced psychological evaluations, because of their political belief, and is finally set free with all charges dropped unceremoniously? who has the freedom of speech .. but not allowed within a mile of the event because of their political views? who can be arrested and held indefinitely as an enemy of the state without any recourse or rights, no legal representation and not permitted to know the evidence against them?
A free American.
Oh, but "free" is so vague, we need to clarify what "free" actually is.
are you still an American? these days i wake up and wonder where the hell America went to, for some reason, my beloved Constitution is "just a g*dd*mmed piece of paper" and "freedom should be limited." - 2ndRevolution, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What's next? Do we torture children too? I'm guessing anyone with kids would be willing to admit to any goddamn thing we're asked if someone were to start torturing our kids. Hell, I'll admit to the JFK assassination if you start torturing my kid. Gee, I guess the fact that I wasn't born yet might make it tough but at least you got the answer you wanted.
What a ***** crock of *****. Torture has worked wonders throughout the ages. The Salem witch trials and the Inquisition were good for one thing - killing people you wanted killed.
Keep in mind that if torture becomes an accepted practice, where does the line get drawn? Once government gets a new "power" it never lets it go! What is going to stop them from using it against US?? PLEASE don't give me that ***** that the government is looking out for our best interests. Tell that to the old lady who can't pay her property taxes and loses her house. The government doesn't give a flying ***** about the people other than taxing us to the grave...and thanks to the death tax, even after.

- ne0shell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Evidently watching hate mongers like Ann Coulter, O Reilly and Hannity makes the extreme right diggers think it's OK to spout racist, immoral slogans. "Lets torture all the sand ni**ers!" "Nuke em into a glass parking lot" etc, etc. It's just pathetic and a prime example of the degradation of education in our country and the rise of modern fascism. We cannot fight a war against "Islamic Fascism" unless the military has shiny metal phallic things that erase minds. Radical Islam fills a vacuum left by corrupt regimes in countries which were put in power by the West, especially the most despotic of them. In the name of fossil fuels and stopping communism we signed numerous deals with numerous devils - people kept in poverty and fear will turn to desperate solutions - declaring "war" on them will only make the radicals preachings reality and draw more to their cause, (witness Afghanistan and Iraq). There's really only one way to move forward in this that won't result in both sides living under tyranny:
Do whatever it takes to source our energy needs elsewhere
Stop the energy giants from making predatory deals and condition those deals so that the citizens of the countries providing the resources share in the profits.
Adjust our foreign policy to stop choosing one dictator over the other.
End the World Bank and IMF's predation on the world's poor.
Unfortunately unless the people of the West are willing to wake up and make real changes to our govt such as limiting all terms to prevent career politicians, there really is no hope. - ToMaHaWk1187, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It does not matter whether it is labeled inaccurate or not (although i beleive it is being abused).
Because:
1) What matters is that no individual or group ,yet, controls what is "published" or not.
2) Anyone can publish and no individual or group has that specific authority
3) Whatever the idea or "fact" or published content in general , as long as it is not collectively filtered , will always be translated by the reader the way he want's to translate it.
And thats the beauty of it.
1) "Propaganda from one closes minds.Propaganda from many opens them."
2) "I don't care how you take my argument.Take it as you like.Take as it fits you.Since you say what fits you." - TXC
3) "What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires,
desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes
against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence.
The origin of myths is explained in this way." - Bertrand Russell- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If it gets enough votes for 'inaccurate', a story will fall off the front page, and much fewer people will be able to read it.

- TrentTheThief, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Sure, you can fight fair. Go ahead, use a different set of rules that those you fight against.
If you use your rules plu nice rules to fight a guerilla war, you lose. Everytime. It's not politics or morals, it's just how it works. There is no moral high ground. It is a situation of drive them into the ground with whatever is requrie to do the job, or capitulate before they kill everyone. Better start your children learning Arabic, though.
Ignore the religious and political aspects for a moment and open a history book. See how many time a guerilla group has won. Allah anyone? - FirefighterBlu3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@trentthetheif
sorry, i disagree most strongly. wars weren't lost because cultures stuck to their moral high ground. wars are lost because people lowered themselves.
we are losing heavily in the world court because of how we are acting and treating everyone involved. if we had a government that was actually honest and law abiding, we'd be riding high.- TrentTheThief, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You are ignoring what I said. I don't care about the politics of the situation or who likes americans or thinks americans are doing right or wrong. My statement does not concern the politcal correctness of the situation.
I am saying that to defeat the guerilla, you must be more ruthless. Anything less is the same as losing all will to win or live. If you will not fight on a level field (i.e., use the same rule book as a more ruthless foe), you may as well stop fighting and save lives. And as this foe is comprised of religious extremists, if you want your genes to remain in circulation, then you'd better convert to Islam now and avoid the last minute rush. Nothing stops a religious fantic except death.
