Krugman: NYT Urged me to ‘Lay Off' the Bush Administration
thinkprogress.org — On Friday at the Netroots Nation conference, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman spoke on a panel about “How the media learned to bend over backwards to please the right.” Krugman discussed the right wing’s success at pressuring the media and how some of that filtered down to him.

- hawkeye17, on 07/22/2008, -4/+23That darn 'liberal media' again!
- sanman, on 07/23/2008, -8/+4Krugman's the one making the allegation, and we all know he isn't conservative, so it's still a liberal allegation.
So where's the proof?
Furthermore, how come when Ben Bernanke was appointed Fed Chairman bu the Bush admin, then Krugman's criticisms of Fed policy suddenly stopped? Isn't it true that Bernanke is one of Krugman's mentors whom he looks up to, and also a former professor of his?
Well now you know the real reason why Krugman stopped criticizing Fed's handling of the economy.- Memnoch30, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2His sarcasm was directed at the NYT not at Krugman.
- sanman, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1The fact is that there's very little inclination at NYT to warn people not to attack the Bush admin. Next you'll be claiming that Mother Jones or Atlantic Monthly are strongly biased in support of the Bush admin. So my point was that Krugman is making up a fib, as an excuse over why he hasn't criticized his mentor Bernanke.

- diabetic, on 07/22/2008, -21/+12That's a joke, NYT could never be pressured to bend an inch to the right.
- altgeeky1, on 07/23/2008, -4/+10You can't possibly NOT be aware of all the NTY pro-war articles leading up to the Iraq war... so why are you pretending otherwise?
- Malacandra95, on 07/23/2008, -3/+7No, the joke is continuing to believe that the media has a liberal bias after witnessing the media witchhunts of the Clinton administration followed by turning a blind eye to the palpable crimes of the Bush administration.
If you want to read examples of the NYT carrying water for the right wing, I refer you to the writings of Judy Miller, cheerleader for the Iraq War... and unquestioning stenographer of Bush Administration talking points. - zombies187, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3Judy Miller is such a liberal for lying about WMDs on the front page of the nyt for months.

- RadioFreeOpium, on 07/22/2008, -6/+10No no no, they're clearly biased to the left, they rejected an informative piece from john mccain
or at least thats what you'd think if you read the comments for that article on digg...- duckley, on 07/23/2008, -2/+5McCain's piece was whiny, idiotic crap.
The NY Time should have published it; it would have HURT Ol' Whiney's campaign ! - FredFredrickson, on 07/23/2008, -2/+3Hey, someone got it right! McCain tried to make it sound like we will lose the war if we withdraw - completely ignoring the fact that with no clear goal for victory, we cannot win, withdraw or not.
- duckley, on 07/23/2008, -2/+5McCain's piece was whiny, idiotic crap.
- jei731, on 07/23/2008, -2/+17Criticizing the emperor or pointing out his lack of clothing is tabu in USA. NYT should know better than to squeak at their masters. Americans do not want news or journalism that requires thinkin. They want propaganda and pre-digested opinionated sludge that is easy to adopt and repeat and repeat and repeat in every media. It is wat was done in der Reich, it iz wat should work in der USA as well.

Turning all the USA's media into UK's "The Sun" (minus the *****) has been a lifelong dream of Rupert Murdoch. He's redefined "news" and changed the market for it, that's for sure! Other papers have to follow along, or watch readership and advertisement dwindle.

- elemming, on 07/23/2008, -3/+4I think the NYT turned when they did a major economic series that showed they were not the beneficiaries of Bush's tax and economic policies. The $100 to $600K a years guys thought the new tax plans were supposed to help them. When they realized they were getting peanuts compared to the multi-millionaires they felt betrayed. Katrina was the icing on the cake that the Washington GOP were clueless boobs who turned all the work over to incompetent business cronies.
- ElbowGeek, on 07/23/2008, -6/+0OK, hang on, I'm totally confused. The NYT is first accused of being biased towards the left because they rejected an editorial by John McCain, but now they're accused of kowtowing to the right by pressuring their writers to go easy on *them*.
So if they're so eager to appease the right, why didn't they publish that editorial? Um...- BotchaMcCoola, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2Maybe it was just badly written. Ever done any editorial work? Once we have two presidents in a row that could not be trusted, we don’t trust anyone anymore.
- Horace, on 07/23/2008, -6/+2This is just Krugman's lame attempt to counter the embarrassing McCain editorial story. Anyone who's read Krugman's tripe knows he one of the leading victims of Bush Derangement Syndrome.
- danfive555, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Very true.

- Kikokun, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1ramirez, que idiotez
- sdevinen, on 07/23/2008, -5/+1If NYT wasn't bent so far to the left, they wouldn't have to make lame attempts at bending ever so slightly to the right.
- infodoc1, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4I heard some nonsense once about how the job of journalists is to "report", rather than serve state power.
- BigMacMcChicken, on 07/23/2008, -3/+3Paul Krugman is a serial liar. The best way to get rich in the stock market the past 8 years was to do the exact opposite of what he said.
- RRJackson, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2It's funny how these guys all waited for a shift in public opinion before they started spouting this crap. "Hey, Republican approval ratings are at an all-time low...time to cash in!"
- malcolmlo, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Good video. Long. but good, check it out if you are bored and have a free hour.
- bassjam5, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1GWB doesn't bend them over backwards he prefers to bend them over a bed. That's why Jeff Gannon visited the White house so often.
