Legal scholar: Evidence Suggests Bush Committed Crimes
rawstory.com — Law professor rebukes Democrats for letting Bush off hook Nancy Pelosi needs to hold meaningful impeachment hearings that will focus on evidence that President Bush has committed crimes in office, constitutional law professor Jonathan Turley said Wednesday.

- ChristPissed, on 07/17/2008, -10/+74Bush should be kept in a cage while his guilt is determined in a court of law, just like Saddam.
- GovContractor, on 07/18/2008, -10/+10I realize that the Bush hate on this board is cranked up to 11 but to compare him to Saddam (in any way) is insane. Saddam had people put through wood chippers for Christ's sake. And regardless of what people say, water boarding is not as bad as being ground up (probably feet first) by a wood chipper. Whether you support what Bush is doing to fight terrorism or not, Saddam was a monster that should have been put down long ago. In the end, he got a lot better than he deserved.
- SOS84, on 07/18/2008, -5/+11Here here, GovContractor. Saddam was a monster and deserved what he got but to not impeach Bush and charge him with crimes against humanity is anti-American at best and treasonous at worst.
- IPublius, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4And the acid. Don't forget that Hussein liked to use acid vats as well (also feet first).
- sodade, on 07/18/2008, -5/+13Don't you get it? Saddam was a dictator in a non-democratic nation. Bush was the leader of what used to be the #1 superpower on earth. Saddam might have ***** people up in sadistic ways, but Bush is responsible for killing 100x as many innocent Iraqis. Besides, Saddam was a ***** CIA puppet.
- norman619, on 07/18/2008, -5/+5You are trying to talk sense into people who blindly hate. These are the same people who are turning a blind eye to the lies and shady dealings of the legislative branch of our government. If you go by how they are talking you'd think the executive branch is the only branch in our gov with any real power. They are unaware of the checks and balances in our system. The president can't do a whole lot w/o the OK of the legislative and/or the judicial branches. We are not a monarch we are a representative republic. It's our own fault that we keep electing representatives who chose to not represent the people and do the people's business. We don't usually get the government we want but we always get the one we deserve.
- dinsy, on 07/18/2008, -3/+8Bush and his handlers are systematically destroying this country. Why should they not be hated?
- GovContractor, on 07/18/2008, -9/+3SOS84,
Exactly what "crimes against humanity" has Bush committed? Maybe I'm just naive, but I thought that "crimes against humanity" were things like genocide, mass rape, mass torture, etc. These are atrocities committed by people who are truly evil. To my knowledge, Bush has not done any of these things. Please do not belittle the suffering of the victims of real "crimes against humanity" by suggesting that wire tapping, aggressive interrogation, and maniacal dictator removal are the same as what they experienced. I know I'm not an authority on the subject and you really shouldn't take just my word for it. I suggest that you get in touch with a Holocaust survivor and ask them to define "crimes against humanity" - Bloodboiler, on 07/18/2008, -2/+3Please keep in mind that we still don't know everything that has been, and is, going on in CIA's secret prisons around the world. Saddam ordered/sanctioned torturing openly to rule by fear. Bush orders/sanctions torture in secrecy for unknown reasons (pretty much zero results so far). Difference between the two is not that great.
- jenniferstruth, on 07/18/2008, -3/+3Here is the deal, Bush is not the only one guilty of these war crimes however as the sitting president he is responsible especially once he started his signing statements and executive orders declaring himself unitary executive. Saddam was a monster as is Bush. Sadaam was also set up by our government to be the fall guy, much like Bush is being set up by the ruling elite to be the fall guy for the war, the financial collapse and the environment. You people and your left/right game. Have we not learned by now that there is no difference between the democrats and the republicans? They are all profiting off of death, they are all complicit in the crimes against humanity in the forms of extraordinary rendition, the use of depleted uranium in every "battle" we have been in since desert storm, the infringement of our rights here as Americans and continuing to lead the American people down this false path of fixing the environment by changing our personal ways instead of actually changing the factories and such.....the left and the right are on the same side and that side is money and power. There are many good people whom are trying to get the word out to you and no one is listening. Norman619 up there seems to think the president cannot do much without the approval of congress, have you forgotten all the veto's or threats of veto's that have happened. Do you know that NSPD51 which is the order for continuity of government, has not been fully viewed by congress because Bush will not let them see it? What about the warrentless wire-tapping that happened years before we actually heard of it happening. That is why I believe congress has become impotent, they have too much dirt on people. Like when Spitzer wrote the op-ed piece about the sub-prime mortgage scam and suddenly was busted with a hooker.
The fact is the American people have failed ourselves, our children as well as the rest of the world. We have the greatest country in the world, the greatest set of tools to fight against tyranny in the form of our constitution and we allowed it to be dismantled and we have allowed our current regime to instill fear in us so much so that people will not even speak out. They are torturing people daily and I am not speaking of water-boarding, that is the least harmful method of torture. Please read the John Yoo torture papers, did you know that the president allowed children have their testicles cut with pliers in front of their parents to get information? Did you know that there is a video of children being anally raped with glow sticks in front of their mothers in order to get the mothers to turn in their husbands? Don't just shake your head and call me crazy and don't you dare tell me I am lying until you look it up. Seymour Hersch broke the news and you can find those facts anywhere. We all know that our country has been destabilizing countries forever, manifest destiny. Look at the death, destruction, evil and pain we inflicted and are still inflicting in south america, we simply now have our pockets set on the middle east. This is nothing new, we just do not have our history right.
We as Americans must support impeachment not only for our own nation to heal, but for the world to see that we do not condone the rape, torture, killing, destruction and destabilization that is being perpetrated on the world in our names. Democracy is not brought to people at the end of a gun and it is a bit of a slap in our face here in the U.S. when we are having our rights taken daily and have to go to a "free speech zone" to say what we want to say. How do you all feel about having to be in "free speech zones"? This is why we must get this country back on track and Dennis Kucinich, Cynthia McKinney and quite a few others are fighting for us and we need to let them all know that we appreciate their dedication to the constitution and to the American public. Please contact me if you have anything you would like to discuss as I love to talk to people about the future of our nation. We have the greatest nation in the world and we patriots are trying to defend it but we need your help citizens.

"but Bush is responsible for killing 100x as many innocent Iraqis"
I'd love to see the proof you have of this. Granted, you'd never try to back this absurd claim up because that would mean that Bush would have had to kill 300,000,000 Iraqis, which would be an amazing accomplishment considering that Iraq's population is roughly 27 million.
Comments like that only make you look absolutely ***** stupid. - sodade, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1First off, the 100x was just making a point - I was obviously not shooting for accuracy. I'd sure like to see the citation for Saddam killing 3million innocent Iraqis. Even with the infamous gassing of the Kurds Saddam killed only 5,000 people.
- PolishLogic, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2"I was obviously not shooting for accuracy."
Obviously.....a large number of war critics seldom shoot for accuracy. It's proven daily on this site.
Citations on Saddam killing his own people? Feel free to google it yourself. Terms like "death toll under Saddam Hussein", "death toll of Iraqi sanctions", "oil for food death toll", "Iran Iraq war death toll". You'll find reports by UNICEF, Human Rights Watch, and a number of other sources whose reports on the Iraq war death toll are used for anti-war purposes.
Just a few figures:
- estimated 500,000 died during the war with Iran
- estimated 100,000 Kurds killed during Saddam's reign. That one particular gassing you referred to was more like 30,000. 5000 are said to have died within hours, the rest of the toll came via disease and birth defects believed to be attributed to the gassing.
- estimated between 1 million and 1.5 million people, including 500,000 children died of either starvation or lack of medical care because of the sanctions that Saddam's actions resulted in.
- estimates show roughly 250,000 people disappeared without a trace during his 24 year rule.
That's 1.85 to 2.35 million for starters. It's possible that it could be higher, meaning that the 3 million number is within reach. So while it might be a bit high (arguably) it's definitely not a gross over exaggeration, or out of the realm of possibility.
Regardless of any of this, one thing is certainly clear: Saddam sure didn't seem to have a problem with killing his own people. - sodade, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1-estimated 500,000 died during the war with Iran

Blaming these on Saddam is pretty duplicitous considering that we pushed them into war with Iran and we pushed for the sanctions. Yes, I agree that Saddam had a hand in both, and it is his responsibility as their leader, but we are just as responsible for those two. Not to mention that we gave him the weapons he used on the Kurds.

Oh, then there was the invasion of Iraq, in which as "liberators" we didn't bother to keep track of how many innocent people were killed. Much of that stuff is criminal, other stuff is just revoltingly immoral or unethical.
Small wonder you support it, then.

I don't care for the man as president either, but this is ridiculous. Where are the people who threw a fit about Clinton's impeachment hearings? They only accused him of perjury (of which he was guilty) and not treason. If that was ridiculous, this is through the Looking Glass.
Everyone accepts this as a done and proven deal, but aside from Kucinich (and most of his I disagree with), no one is being specific about what precisely he did. Even Kucinich did not accuse Bush of treason if memory serves.- dinsy, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1http://www.patriotsaints.com/News/911/Conspiracy/B ...
- IPublius, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1Thank you Dinsy. I stand corrected.
I am far from convinced that we were complicit in the attack, but an official lack of action like in Pearl Harbor is much easier to swallow. That would constitute treason, but I am not sure that it would ever come up in an impeachment trial. Constitutionally, all impeachment can do is remove him from office, something that will occur on its own in less than 7 months anyway, at which point he is beyond impeachment hearings.
Worth looking at though. Reminds me strongly of OKC.
- Altotus, on 07/18/2008, -2/+2Treason would be hard to prove. By definition (in the US) it's attempted violent overthrow of the US government. I can't think of anything he did domestically that fits that description. He may have subverted the rule of law, committed violations of federal law, and flaunted treaties to which the US is a signatory state, but high treason would probably not be a charge that you could make stick.

I realize that all it says is provide comfort and aid to the enemy. This is understood to be something like Benedict Arnold rather than convoluted international politics and the way that actions shape others. One would have to prove that George Bush invaded Iraq for the purpose of aiding Al Qaeda, not that it was an accidental byproduct (known or not) of his actions. - anitarivas, on 07/18/2008, -8/+2Juarez Commited crimes too! They always get away with it and are allowed to write history. I hope they do investigate Bush - people who have responsibility to the masses should not be allowed to abuse power.
- chirax, on 07/18/2008, -9/+2Bush committed his first crime by breathing, in the same atmosphere as me :)
- malman4, on 07/18/2008, -3/+1And how in hell did you get in my atmosphere?
- udahlen, on 07/18/2008, -6/+9Well of course he committed crimes! What's amazing is that there doesn't seem to be much pressure from the American people to bring these thugs to justice. The Bush administration is as guilty, if not more, of crimes as the Nixon administration.
- beerock, on 07/18/2008, -5/+5Damn, they had to go to a legal scholar for confirmation?
Vote or die, bitches. - JasonCox, on 07/18/2008, -10/+2Why Bush hasn't been tried for War Crimes or Impeached yet:
Cheney would become President - keymanjim2, on 07/18/2008, -13/+5More rawsewage tripe.
"Suggests" does not mean "proves".
Buried.- Waiting2awake, on 07/18/2008, -0/+7Nope, in order to prove anything we need a trial don't we?
- keymanjim2, on 07/18/2008, -5/+2No. You need to present proof then take it to trial.
If a legal scholar can't find positive proof then taking it to trial probably wont get you anywhere.
You only have one shot at this. It has to be done right - Waiting2awake, on 07/18/2008, -2/+2Keymanjim - If you have "proof" then there is no need for a trial - trials come from, generally, circumstantial evidense Both sides take their evidense to a court of law, where a judge will make a decision.
There is more than enough circumstantial evidense to bring these clowns to trial. Heck we put people away for life with less circumstantial evidense.
- keymanjim2, on 07/18/2008, -5/+2No. You need to present proof then take it to trial.
- Waiting2awake, on 07/18/2008, -0/+7Nope, in order to prove anything we need a trial don't we?
- dayal911, on 07/18/2008, -5/+10That's why the democrats don't want an investigation. They don't want themselves investigated.
- mogebier, on 07/18/2008, -3/+4Damn right. The kids on here think that Bush just sent the troops over there by himself. The Congress voted for it too. Congress is what controls where and how the government spends money.
- funkyloki, on 07/18/2008, -3/+2Spot on.
- crweaks23, on 07/18/2008, -3/+2I think it's probably more to do with the waste of time and resources, and the politically heated battle that would take place right before the election. That's just my take, but I guess I'm way too unbiased to even participate in this retarded conversation.
- Izult, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2and then the people might actually start demanding change... oh wait..

- WriterY, on 07/18/2008, -7/+2Isn't that nice! A Law Professor is speaking out. So where the hell was this gutsy and, oh so bold individual when matters could have truly been helped by declaring the dirtiness and filth that exists in D.C. some 2, 3, & 4 years ago? Where was he? Come on, speak up Mr. Law Professor... Hiding like a frightened child, that's where he was! That goes double for all the other SPINELESS ones who wag their finger as this country goes down the poop shoot!!! USELESS MINDS HAVE BEEN NURTURED IN OUR COUNTRY'S UNIVERSITIES...

- Trifold, on 07/18/2008, -3/+4Why are the Democrats so spineless? Haven't they realized by now the neo-cons have NO intention of compromising with them...ever? And who cares if it's only symbolic? That's fine...hell the Republicans symbolically impeached Clinton for a blowjob. Impeachment would at least put the Congress on record as saying "This President was out of line".
Oh, but impeachment hearings would be soooo impolite...- dayal911, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2What makes you think the 2 parties are so exclusive?

- SuperVepr308, on 07/18/2008, -1/+4That is what I would like to know. I hear these folks bleating that he committed "crimes" but the only one they seem to site is the crime of them not liking him. Fools.

- smoothdogg00, on 07/18/2008, -11/+7Digg has become a place for all the whiners and cry-babies of the world to come and vent with each other. They all digg each other up for moral support, which in turn makes the recipients feel good about themselves and enjoy coming to digg more and more. In the end, we have a site that used to be about news, but now only consists of anti-Bush and pro-Obama fanatics jerking each other off (metaphorically).
War crimes? Crimes against humanity? Exaggerate much?- SuperVepr308, on 07/18/2008, -4/+2I suspect it is not all metaphorical in some instances.
- spongya77, on 07/18/2008, -2/+4Hey, turdbrain strikes again. Please, read the Geneva conventions. Read about the Nuremberg trials. People were executed for what these people have done.
- fx666, on 07/18/2008, -5/+2***** liberals and ***** conservatives rip each other throats to advance their petty points of view. But the moderates like myself see their mutual accusations as a huge BS.
- malcolmlo, on 07/18/2008, -3/+4Why is the DIGG mob repeating over and over about this lawyer saying "suggests"? Dont you know anything about lawyers and legalese?
"Evidence suggests" = "he ***** did it" in legalese. Lawyers always leave themselves a way out and stay away from strong language unless they are arguing a case in front of a jury. He was on television, his reputation is at stake to say anything absolute is a major risk. So everyone calm the ***** down, he was articulate and made alot of great points. I just wish he'd put his money where is mouth is and get more involved in the process, or get more vocal at criticizing this rigged hearing. - Suzilla, on 07/18/2008, -3/+6Saddam was tried and convicted for ORDERING the deaths of 130-some people. He did not personally kill them by pulling a trigger, dropping a bomb, releasing pathogens or toxins in their midst; he ORDERED others to do it.
Bush has ORDERED the deaths of many, MANY times that many people. What's good for the goose ... - Groovydoo, on 07/18/2008, -2/+1Instead of bitching, someone figure out how to get the ball rolling for prosecution at the Hague: This is what Wikipedia said in regards to having a prosecutor open a case:
* when a situation is referred to him by a state party;
* when a situation is referred to him by the United Nations Security Council, acting to address a threat to international peace and security; or
* when the Pre-Trial Chamber authorises him to open an investigation on the basis of information received from other sources, such as individuals or non-governmental organisations. - theadvinci, on 07/18/2008, -3/+3Bush? Committed crimes? Oh COME ON!!! Look how cute he is. He's not a criminal!

***** THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT - Hiltonexeter, on 07/18/2008, -2/+4Congress is just as criminal as Bush is now because of their complacency. Now they're all bunch of criminals! Congress swore to uphold the Constitution and by not keeping the President in check. They're not doing their job, and therefore are guilty too!
- XanderDee, on 07/18/2008, -3/+5No one needs to be a Law professor to figure this out. Thus Americans need to wake up to the fact that their government is a rouge government. Democrat or Republican is your choice in November ever think doing the same thing over and over again may not yield the results you are looking for? :)
There are other parties like Constitutional and Libertarian you know. - spongya77, on 07/18/2008, -2/+4"Suggests"??? WFT? Legal evidence "suggested" the crimes of Pol Pot, Goering, Saddam, and others, too? The heaps of bodies is not enough? Two ***** wars are not enough? The evidence does not suggest. The evidence flat out says. Too bad they will never pay for these. Even those marines, god rot their souls, who were proven to be massacring civilians were acquitted -though their crimes were in par with what the Wehrmacht did in the Eastern Front, and for what people were hanged afterward. So if these "bad apples" got free instead of the death penalty for which they more than qualified, what do you think the big guys will get? The people who planned and executed this thing? They will get to live their lives, get richer on speeches, and book rights, and have libraries named after them. They will get a state funeral, where everybody will tell the world how great leaders they were.

No *****, really?
Can someone please tell Congress? Most of them are too concerned with sending strongly worded letters and saying a lot of things that contradict their actions.
