- SpinningHead, on 06/29/2008, -2/+1"that is why they left England to begin with (no taxes in a free world)."
huh? That has nothing to do with why they left England. There was the escape from theocracy and monarchy and the promise or rich resources and many journeys involving the latter was backed by government and commercial investment.
I would rather not pay for the war, but it seems the republicans tell me I have to.

- bjornski, on 06/29/2008, -2/+4It must just suck having too many properties to keep track of.
- Olivaise, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1@bjornski: McCain or his wife probably have nothing to do with property maintenance and other miscellaneous issues (besides money). I'd venture to say that they have someone do it for them.
- aadyss, on 06/29/2008, -1/+0It is absolutely not necessary to own that many houses. It is an exploitation of the poor. It is far better to lump the money to buy those houses together and purchase a $1.65 million dollar home to house a family of 4. ....like Obama. That is true social justice in our times, since Mr. Obama is indeed a poor working man's liberal.
And then there is Ted Kennedy, the patriarch of the left of the Democratic party. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbDwbUZar0o
YAF/HotAir correspondent Jason Mattera asks Senator Ted Kennedy why he gets away with defending estate taxes even though his family avoids paying them. He is of course legally following the law but hardly walking the walk which is indeed is a very liberal thing to do.
How much is the Kennedy estate worth? SAY WHAT???- isukeyo, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1What the ***** are you smoking? How the hell is owning multiple houses an exploitation of the poor? I think McCain is a douche for not paying his taxes but how does his owning multiple homes have anything to do with the poor?
Buying a house for a family of 4? So if you have money, you are obligated to give it away to people?
I'd guess that you are poor and live off of other people's handouts!
- isukeyo, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1What the ***** are you smoking? How the hell is owning multiple houses an exploitation of the poor? I think McCain is a douche for not paying his taxes but how does his owning multiple homes have anything to do with the poor?
- isukeyo, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1What relevance does the number of houses or the necessity of owning multiple houses have to do with this story. The story is about his failing to pay taxes on one of his homes. I certainly think that the failure to pay his taxes on the house is indication of poor financial management (although likely deliberate - I highly doubt that whoever manages their estate simply forgot to pay taxes on the house) but I fail to see what relevance the number of homes he owns has on the story.
- aadyss, on 07/01/2008, -0/+0@isukeyo
I guess sarcasm flies over your head. I had a raw land property once that my parents gave me. I paid the taxes for some years but became tired of paying taxes that were higher than the value of the land so I quit paying them. I informed the county that collected the taxes that I would no longer pay and if the residents of the community who were the beneficiaries of the tax money wanted their championship golf course and their new multi-million fire house they could pay for it themselves instead of ripping off absentee land owners.
I own 2 houses...no mortgages and no, I am not poor. My comment was to the liberals who slam McCain about ...."who needs that many houses"...point out that their favorite son owns a 1.65 million dollar house. You could break that down to 5 $350,000 houses and have a little change left over. That way one could say Obama owns 5 houses. Does that clear that up for you???
The last comment was about Ted Kennedy who obviously loves to levy taxes to others but not pay them himself.- arbouler, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1dude, i'm fiscally conservative and i still wonder why one purchase that many homes.

(It's on the beach in La Jolla, which is one of the richest, if not the richest community in San Diego.)- jattea, on 06/29/2008, -0/+11I commented on this elsewhere, but four years of back taxes on a luxury beachfront San Diego property, including interest, only totals $6,744?? I know California property taxes are relatively inexpensive, but this reeks of special treatment...
- splorpdotorg, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1It would depend on the value of the property when it was purchased. California voters passed Proposition 13 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Propositio ... ), which limits the increase in property taxes. From the Wiki article:
Under Proposition 13, the annual real estate tax on a parcel of residential property is limited to 1% of its assessed value. This "assessed value," however, may only be increased by a maximum of 2% per year, until and unless the property is resold (not refinanced). At the time of sale, the assessment may increase by an arbitrary amount, but future assessments are likewise restricted to the 2% annual maximum increase. If the property's market value increases rapidly (values of many detached dwellings in California have appreciated at annual rates averaging more than 10% over the course of several years) or if inflation exceeds 2% (common), the differential between the owner's taxes and the taxes a new owner would have to pay can become quite large. - bjornski, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2Property tax varies for each area but is approximately 1-1.25% of the sales price and in a rising market can only go up 2% a year of current tax bill per year.
http://www.janefoster.com/newsletter.html
----------------------
Even if that's only ONE year, at the lowest rate possible, 1%, the numbers are screwy. A balance of $6,744 outstanding, even if it was 100% of the yearly tax, would put the house at $674,000.
Someone is cooking the books.

- Chongo, on 06/29/2008, -0/+6I had an interesting question with this Swedish guy in my office. He makes a valid point: Shouldn't one of the most powerful jobs on the entire planet be filled by someone who is elite? Why all this mud slinging about who is elite and who is not? When you launch a rocket into space, isn't the pilot an "elite" pilot?
Damn Scandinavian logic.- growler1, on 06/29/2008, -2/+3That's an interesting point that is hard to argue with. However, I look at it this way--I at least like to think the next president knows what it's like to be a more or less average American in many ways (has concerns about the economy that rest on more than protecting a stock portfolio, knows where and why people struggle and has some sense of how to go about addressing it, etc.) because if they never know these things or have had to come to terms with them in one way or another, then that man or woman setting national policy on the economy, energy, trade relations, etc., will be like a carpenter who builds a house from the inside out.
They might do an okay job, but making policy for people you don't relate to is an enterprise that's bound to be full of gaffes and missteps that a little insight could avoid.
Plus, it may have something to do with the fact that we don't like the idea of a king or a member of an "elite" ruling class because it's in our blood to consider each other equals.

I also love the McCain quote found on your link:
“Of those 80 million homeowners, only 55 million have a mortgage at all, and 51 million are doing what is necessary --working a second job, skipping a vacation, and managing their budgets -- to make their payments on time. That leaves us with a puzzling situation: how could 4 million mortgages cause this much trouble for us all?

- Gutterpunk, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2How can news be "original". Exclusive maybe, but original?
- carnivalofmmo, on 06/29/2008, -20/+26Wow, calling out hypocrisy just doesn't go well with anybody.
When the opposition says irrational and emotionally charged things, it's an outrage. But when they do something silly and you get a chance to sling mud, it exposes their true nature.
Let's take stock of the facts: A bank didn't pay a bill. The bill went overdue. Upon finding out about it, Cindy McCain had the bank pay the bill.
Let's take stock of another set of facts: Barack Obama is christian. His father was at one point Muslim. His middle name is Hussein.
Neither set of facts has any bearing on either candidate's true character.
Liberals taking delight in an unpaid tax bill that is clearly a clerical error is just as bad as Conservatives taking delight at Obama's middle name. It's all *****, and you should be ashamed at yourself for taking delight in it.
But then again, i've never expected much out of partisans of any color.- xilduq, on 06/29/2008, -10/+7I'm more inclined to believe the condo is owned outright, therefore there'd be no bank involved. If you were an elitist like the hundred millionaire McCains, you would likely assume no mortgage too.
- disappointment, on 06/29/2008, -0/+3Read the newsweek article. It is owned by the trust that Cindy is the "manager" of. An elderly Aunt of hers lives there.
- HappyScrappy, on 06/29/2008, -10/+16Wow, that's funny. I never missed paying the taxes on my house. It's not that difficult to keep track of whether you've received your bill or not, it should be doubly easy for a trust to do so.
And on top of that, if you run for President, you should probably review your tax situation overall. No need to give your opponent ammunition.
But McCain failed to do all of this. Ridiculous.- disappointment, on 06/29/2008, -4/+4Way to pass judgment on something you clearly don't have an understanding of.
The Trust fund that Cindy McCain manages owns the Condo. An Elderly Aunt lives there, but the tax bill was being forwarded to a bank which then (under normal conditions) would pay the tax bill. However, in this circumstance, the post office in Phoenix received the bills back.. and thus weren't received and weren't paid. But don't let this change your already grim opinion of the McCain's. - HappyScrappy, on 06/29/2008, -2/+6Way to pass judgment on me, when you clearly don't understand me.
Do you see this sentence in my post:
'It's not that difficult to keep track of whether you've received your bill or not, it should be doubly easy for a trust to do so.'
I know the circumstances. The circumstance of not receiving your bill doesn't absolve you of paying it. It doesn't absolve me of paying it, this was indicated to me by the county when I bought my house.
It is TRULY astounding to me that you not only would go out of your way to defend McCain on not paying his debts, but would also be so awful at reading that you didn't notice what I typed. I am not at all astounded that you would assume others came to their conclusions by being uninformed, as you seem to have formidable experience with doing this yourself.
When you buy a property, you are informed at closing that you will owe property taxes. Not receiving a bill does not forgive you of paying taxes. - spinninnzen, on 06/29/2008, -1/+5So, wait...If I don't receive my bills then I don't have to pay them!!!???!!! Oh happy days! Time to forward all of my mail to somewhere and be absolved of all dues....riiiiiiiight.
Better yet, I'll set up a trust so that way I can deny all knowledge of the bills I have to pay.
I'd like to see the average American get away with not paying taxes for 4 years and still have their home now.

- sgiffy, on 06/29/2008, -15/+12You know, begrudging McCain for being rich just makes us look jealous and petty. There are lots of reasons the guy should not be president, the fact that he and his wife have been very successful is not one of them.
- meese, on 06/29/2008, -3/+14Just to clarify - their richness has nothing to do with their personal "success".
It's inheritance money.- sgiffy, on 06/29/2008, -13/+6So, at some point it stemmed from both good ideas and hard work. Not to mention that one of the rewards of success is being able to ensure the financial stability for your loved ones.
This is not a political issue. - xexx, on 06/29/2008, -2/+6@sgiffy
The point would be that unlike Obama, McCains money wasn't earned through his own actions, hard work, and intelligence... his money was inherited mainly by dumping his crippled wife to be with a 20 year younger beer heiress. - JHB800, on 06/29/2008, -4/+2McCain can't touch his wife's money you ignorant pricks. They file separate tax returns. Its HER money, not his.
- sgiffy, on 06/29/2008, -13/+6So, at some point it stemmed from both good ideas and hard work. Not to mention that one of the rewards of success is being able to ensure the financial stability for your loved ones.
- DaDrake, on 06/29/2008, -5/+4Except, only 7% of the top 1% of Americans actually inherited their wealth. No doubt, many had a head start... but it takes risk and know-how to keep onto money (especially consider how estate taxes will rape a family's hard earn money by 50% each time). Not to mention, the wealthy often have their assets in things that can not quickly be liquidated.
- DaDrake, on 06/29/2008, -6/+1The Decline of Inherited Money
My Krugman post brought a lot of emails asking about my assertion that “the vast majority of today’s rich didn’t inherit their money, but made it themselves.”
For the sake of brevity, I didn’t cite the research behind the statement. But since many of you have asked, and we aim to please here at the Wealth Report, here are my three main data points:
1. According to a study of Federal Reserve data conducted by NYU professor Edward Wolff, for the nation’s richest 1%, inherited wealth accounted for only 9% of their net worth in 2001, down from 23% in 1989. (The 2001 number was the latest available.)
2. According to a study by Prince & Associates, less than 10% of today’s multi-millionaires cited “inheritance” as their source of wealth.
3. A study by Spectrem Group found that among today’s millionaires, inherited wealth accounted for just 2% of their total sources of wealth.
Each of these stats measures slightly different things, yet they all come to the same basic conclusion: Inheritance is not the main driver of today’s wealth. The reason we’ve had a doubling in the number of millionaires and billionaires over the past decade (even adjusted for inflation) is that more of the non-wealthy have become wealthy.
So it’s not just that the same old rich folks are getting richer. The more-important shift is that the rich are getting more numerous.- xexx, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2Sounds irrelevant to me. Money makes more money if you're not an idiot or particularly adventurous in your endeavors. I'm sure they consider being the owner of a company your parents created as "making your own money", but here in the real world we don't.
- StaticThunder, on 06/29/2008, -1/+4I disagree. The fact that he failed, with all his resources to manage to pay the same sort of bills that *I* have to pay ... or lose everything AND possibly go to jail (for Federal taxes), means he is not competent to run the country. Especially since those bills I have to pay go directly towards implementing policies he voted on. He has the means, he has the assets, and he doesn't even support his policies, AS REQUIRED BY LAW.
- meese, on 06/29/2008, -3/+14Just to clarify - their richness has nothing to do with their personal "success".
- xilduq, on 06/29/2008, -13/+7Come on, just because the McCains failed to manage their personal finances properly, people are going to claim he won't be able to manage the largest economy in the world. It's hard enough keeping up with the eight or so monthly bills I owe, think how hard it must be to keep track of their multitude (nine?) of houses/properties and associated bills they have. Let's cut them some slack here. I'm sure he won't be as forgetful with the country's finances.
- topgigmedia, on 06/29/2008, -1/+2The president should be fare more superior managing his/her personal assets, don't you think? Cut him some slack? "Shortly after NEWSWEEK inquired about the matter, the McCain aide e-mailed a receipt dated Friday, June 27, confirming payment by the trust to San Diego County in the amount of $6,744.42. County officials say the trust still owes an additional $1,742 for this year, an amount that is overdue and will go into default July 1. Told of the outstanding $1,742, the aide said: "The trust has paid all bills shown owing as of today and will pay all other bills due."

How does that prove that this was not an honest mistake? They have about 8 houses they have to pay taxes on... any reasonable person can see how one of them could have gotten forgotten. Of course the Democratically biased Digg user base is not always reasonable.
Just because Newsweek found the error before the McCains did doesn't make this any more of a story. Like I originally posted, if they REFUSED to pay it I can see what the fuss is all about. Until then, I am looking at a witch hunt.

- DesignNerd, on 06/29/2008, -2/+6I have never served my country, I have pride in it. What a stupid argument. What I don't have pride in is citizens who think that just because someone criticizes their country, that makes them "UnAmerican"
- bestsoccerdog, on 06/29/2008, -10/+3I hate Obama, all he does is talk, he has NO track record to prove it. He never served his country, what makes you think he has pride in it? He doesn't visit my state, he won't win
- LanceUppercut, on 06/29/2008, -2/+6No house in Hawaii? With that many owned, buried as ***** stupid.
- meese, on 06/29/2008, -1/+8Here are some pictures of the view from McCain's condo:
http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/It_s_tough_being ... - blackhappy, on 06/29/2008, -13/+3The article speaks strictly of Mrs. McCain, not the Senator. And if Obama doesn't has to answer for his wife's miss steps neither should McCain!
- KevlarKev, on 06/29/2008, -7/+2b/c liberals will pull any ***** outta their asses...
- meese, on 06/29/2008, -3/+7The only reason it's in Cindy McCain's name is because for tax purposes the McCains have kept their papers separate. It's still the family's house.
- peticsu, on 06/29/2008, -1/+4Boy is she lucky John quit beating on her last week.
She wouldve gotten a good ol' whoopin'!
- libr3volution, on 06/29/2008, -12/+2Obama bought his house for several hundred thousand below the asking price thanks to Tony Rezco and John McCain doesn't pay his taxes. CORRUPTION!!!!!!! I'm going to vote for real change in 2008! Bob Barr Libertarian for President!

- Ozzsanity, on 06/29/2008, -1/+11McBush and his drug addict wife who steals her fix from a charity are some real scummy folks.
- charm803, on 06/29/2008, -0/+6Can you imagine if it had been Michelle Obama who was a druggie and a thief?
OMG We would never hear the end of it.
Imagine if Michelle Obama was the beer heiress and had to STEAL to get her fix.
SCARY thought.
- charm803, on 06/29/2008, -0/+6Can you imagine if it had been Michelle Obama who was a druggie and a thief?
- adesokmo, on 06/29/2008, -8/+3Under California law, once a residential property is in default for five years, it can be sold at a tax sale to recover the unpaid taxes for the taxpayers

- PALMARY, on 06/29/2008, -1/+12Let's look closely at our "class consciousness", the rich in our culture are allowed their indiscretions, but try forgetting to pay the taxes on YOUR home and see what happens!! McBush is WEALTHY,so how about a pause for the old man's cause, let's give him one chorus of "For he is a jolly good fellow"!
- cheeseplease, on 06/29/2008, -1/+0I'm sure the guy is paying about 100 times the amount of taxes you are.
- emeralddragon, on 06/29/2008, -12/+1Oh Obamabots, do you think bringing up inane McCain news like this will distract voters from such fun facts like how Obama is back-pedaling from his anti-NAFTA rhetoric (hmmm...was he lying then or is he lying now?) and gun control support?
- travist120, on 06/29/2008, -10/+1Who cares? It's just a tax payment, it's not like they neglected feeding their daughter for 4 years.
- wastedthelight, on 06/29/2008, -10/+3First, it's Cindy's. Secondly, hasn't defaulted until July. Third, McBush is a *****.
- wastedthelight, on 06/29/2008, -2/+0Dugg down because I made 2 valid points? 3rd is subjective. Silly diggers.
- vexingmodstwo, on 06/29/2008, -11/+2Look, if you're going to Swift Boat the guy... use something people actually give two ***** about.
- charm803, on 06/29/2008, -3/+3I gave a ***** about it because if he can't run his own finances, how is he going to run ours?
But you're right, I only gave a *****, not two.- vexingmodstwo, on 06/29/2008, -2/+2Psst... The President doesn't run the country's finances. FYI.
- charm803, on 06/29/2008, -3/+3I gave a ***** about it because if he can't run his own finances, how is he going to run ours?

- Sfenton, on 06/29/2008, -4/+9UPDATE
"Shortly after NEWSWEEK inquired about the matter, the McCain aide e-mailed a receipt dated Friday, June 27, confirming payment by the trust to San Diego County in the amount of $6,744.42. County officials say the trust still owes an additional $1,742 for this year, an amount that is overdue and will go into default July 1. Told of the outstanding $1,742, the aide said: "The trust has paid all bills shown owing as of today and will pay all other bills due."
Nice one Huffingtonpost- AtHomeBoy2000, on 06/29/2008, -4/+4So, they paid their bill AFTER they got caught. hahahaha
- disappointment, on 06/29/2008, -3/+1AFTER it came to their attention.
- Sfenton, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2After they got caught? You mean when the bill arrives?
I guess we all get caught when our monthly statement comes in. - bjornski, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1And then STILL not the full amount.
Maybe we should start a collection for them, it can be tough raising $1,742.
