"Mr Obama floats off still further from reality when he proposes spending $15 billion a year to encourage "clean energy" sources, such as thousands more wind turbines. He is clearly unaware that wind energy is so hopelessly ineffective that the 10,000 turbines America already has, representing "18 gigawatts of installed capacity", only generate 4.5GW of power, less than that supplied by a single giant coal-fired power station."
Clearly, the only possible way to justify this technology lies completely outside market demand, in the realm of government inefficiency and fiscal waste.- Pitofdoom, on 12/01/2008, -13/+9Research the BTU energy output of "green" Vs. OIL.

- flashingcurser, on 12/01/2008, -13/+15Two observations about this article:
First, for those who think we can vote our way into the hearts of the people of the UK and EU, you 're sorely mistaken. They will like Obama a little more than Bush because of his left leaning tendencies, this does not resolve the fact that they simply do not like us. Regardless of who's president. In their minds, we will remain boorish, fat, lazy and greedy. No amount of couth, gauntness, industry, or charity will change that. This will become apparent before his first term is done.
Second, I find it interesting that the press in the UK has already taken their gloves off, while the American press is still in their honeymoon. I wonder how the left in the US is going to feel when the press turns on them? Most feel that the press is friendly companion to a democratic white house. If the press can turn on the Clinton white house, they certainly will on the Obama white house. Though I wonder if they will have to hire a lot more black reporters?- aletoledo, on 12/01/2008, -3/+5I think the US press has a lot more invested in US politics. Sure the foreign MSM is likely corporate controlled, as happens in the US, but they likely are rivals corporations. There is no reason for the european corporate media to use kid gloves on the US political agenda and this makes them a better reflection of what we truly are like than our own self-serving media outlets.
- kaelyiesta, on 12/01/2008, -1/+8For US politicians and news media, waiting a while before going to work on Obama is a smart decision. There is a ton of eagerness amongst voters and any premature hostilities(particularly from the GOP) would just look like the whining of a sore loser. Regardless of facts, many won't pay any attention to naysayers until Obama makes some obvious mistakes first.

It is not generally true that Brits or Europeans hold such a negative view of Americans. All the Americans I and most others have met are great people. Most of us over here are intelligent enough to realise that the media highlights those ignorant fat back country hicks in the US precisely because they are atypical.
Sure, I have a low opinion of some of the US education system, and of some of your politicians, and some of your culture is really very odd. But I would not be surprised if others judged the UK in a similar fashion.
At the end of the day, you're my fellow humans. No one should judge anyone, lest they be judged themselves by the same standard.

- ehalasey, on 12/01/2008, -4/+4At what point in time does an article based entirely on conjecture constitute "facts"? Great. Obama wants to try a more serious approach to fighting global warming, and it turns out that "green" energy can't yet be as efficiently produced as "non-green". (Not like there is presently a complete lack of economic structure to support efficient green technology, therefore guaranteeing that green = inefficient until we can catch up.)
Funny how easy it is for a writer to attack an environmentally-friendly policy that when said writer doesn't believe in global warming. You want to talk facts? How's about the part where the author took the very great liberty of asserting the "fact" that we're not experiencing climate change? I'd love to see that proof. I mean, if the author really had solid proof, it'd be easy to take the whole rest of it, but an entire critique based on taking for granted something that the majority of the scientific community won't even support? Is this really the ugly nub to which journalistic integrity has been whittled down, these days?
No wonder "the retorts against this article" aren't serious. This is clearly a crock of *****.

- zeitgueist, on 12/01/2008, -7/+9Most of the article is spent trying to convince the reader that global warming isn't happening. You people take this seriously?
- buddywlkr3, on 12/01/2008, -8/+13Again we have a series of comments taking off on ideological trips and missing the whole point. The point of the article is well taken: Obama has clearly throughout the campaign maintained that climate change is man made and that drastic steps have to be taken to prevent a catastrophe. Those steps, as he has clearly indicated, involve spending billions to shift us from an oil-based and carbon fuel economy, and those efforts include wind power, solar power, etc. These facts are not in dispute. What IS in dispute, however, is whether climate change is man made; whether the predictions of catastrophe made by UN politicians and Al Gore have any validity; and whether it makes sense to spend billions on such energy sources that cannot be justified on any economic basis rather than ideology. I agree with the writer of the article that doing all of this makes no economic sense and will bring the US economy to its knees.
- ehalasey, on 12/01/2008, -4/+4Wait, the US economy isn't already there? Wow. Good to know the whole of last year was a dream.

Why doesn't anyone talk about this? - THETEH, on 12/02/2008, -2/+4Investing in green technology isn't economic suicide. It's practical. Borrowing money from overseas and using it to buy foreign oil is economic suicide. Green energy is the alternative, and it will mean that we will actually be producing our own power here. Hence, more economic stability because (A) there will be a ton of new jobs and (B) we won't be pouring all our money overseas and piling up ridiculous debt.
- algaeturd, on 12/02/2008, -2/+5Suicide? You mean 'assisted' suicide at best. Bush already slit the economy's throat with his lynchmen Bernanke and Paulson.
