Offshore Drilling: Bush's NewEnvironmental Disaster
nytimes.com — George Bush has lifted the moratorium on offshore oil drilling. This will provide no relief to soaring gas prices but will instead hurt America's long term strategy for energy independence and open our coasts to environmental catastrophe.

- MadKennyP, on 07/15/2008, -1/+7It wasn't a hurricane that caused the worst oil spill in modern history. The Ixtoc spill occurred in 1979 just north of the Mexican coast. A rig blew out, caught fire and collapsed. The fire and scattered debris made capping the well so difficult that it continued spewing for nearly a year, dumping more than 3-billion barrels of oil. Two months later, the first tar balls washed ashore 600 miles away in Texas. Soon every beach in the state was coated. Tourism dropped by 60 percent.
Big spills like Ixtoc are rare. Smaller ones are not. The Coast Guard documented more than 239,000 oil spills across the gulf between 1973 and 2001.

It should be "Offshore Drilling: Bush's New Environmental Disaster." And MadKennyP, thanks for the information/link in your comment, it really adds to understanding why offshore drilling is a huge risk.
- Fangsinmybeard, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3Now he wants to really flush humanity down the drain. Throw his ass into the nearest oil drilling waste pool and watch him drown in his own filth.

(Seriously though, I enjoy your comments.)
