- jblossom, on 11/30/2008, -0/+6Hitler infiltrated the churches of his times with Nazi-compliant clergy. I am not so sure that our current times are much different.
This is not the first Roman Catholic priest to make a similar claim against Obama, but certainly he seems to be in a minority and it's not only the Roman Catholic church that has strong statements against abortion. My main question, though, is why this priest and other clergy focus so intently on the issue of abortion when there are so many other political issues that lead to many more innocent deaths and deep suffering in any given year? And in essence all Obama and most other pro-life politicians are stating that people SHOULD have abortions. Nobody wants that to happen and even when it does happen it's not approved widely beyond the first trimester. So if someone voted for Obama all they did is vote to give people the right to make these choices. That's not to condone their choices.
In all honesty it appears to me that in the U.S., as in other nations, there are some people who have a certain amount of church power in various denominations who are looking at their demographics and concerned that they are losing congregants, and, therefore their power base. They seem intent on encouraging births for the sake of raw numbers and not looking at the quality of one's life once they are born. In a time when the world's available resources are being stretched by a population explosion why would be encourage over-population: Just to increase suffering? I for one do not think that this is the way that the kingdom of heaven works. Jesus tells us that the poor will always be with us, but he did not advocate increasing poverty for the sake of worldly power. Christ came to save us all, for we are all sinners who are redeemed only through God's grace. Confession should be used to help heal hearts, not to condemn hearts. - LuvThyNeighbor, on 11/30/2008, -0/+3Every Sperm is Sacred >>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0kJHQpvgB8 ;-P

- hat2021, on 11/30/2008, -1/+3Some people are jerks. Priests are people. Some priests are jerks. This isn't a church wide thing just one jerk.
There's actually a lot of fighting going on in the Catholic church, specifically, right now over the social issues debate. Clearly this priest falls on one side and a number of his parishioners fall on the other.
Good news: it's changing (at least in CA, the only place I know the numbers for) the 18-30's voted over way over 60% for Obama and against prop. 8, including those pesky Christians.
We're getting there, slowly, but we shall overcome. Just be patient. Be calm. Be kind. - parisii, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2the church needs to confess for protecting pedophiles for years. the church should be charged as a criminal institution... rico, maybe, conspiring to molest children... bankrupt the assholes.
religion is the refuge of tyrants, liars and, as we now know, sick, sick *****.
total assholes. I am so sick of "religious figures." They're the pharisees braying before temple, asking for money. - mvlazysusan, on 12/01/2008, -1/+2pay tax
- swordedge, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3If I went to a church and a preacher of any sort told me in a sermon that I am a sinner because of who I voted for, I would leave immediately loudly calling said preacher an idiot. Who I vote for is not a sin. Mind you, most sermons put me to sleep.
- johnboycanada, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2"Right to life" includes poverty relief, universal health care, prohibition of the death penalty, and anti-war positions. If Catholics dedicated 1/10th of their time to these "right to life" issues, they would have helped many, many more people than having wasted their efforts on a decision that almost certainly will never be reversed in the United States. To a Catholic abortion is tragic, yes. But to a liberal Catholic such as myself the real tragedy starts at the politicization of priests and ends at the alienation of dissenting parishioners and other important, and numerous Right to life issues becoming ignored by the church and its congregants.
- peggyamm, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3just one jerk?? no, there are loads more. ours ousted the choir director because he also directs the local gay men's choir.
- InsideJob11Sep, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2And people wonder why the church is in such horrible shape. It's because of too many jackasses like this!
