Seven years on, no answer from White House on anthrax attack
rawstory.com — At Monday's White House briefing, I asked if President Bush was satisfied with the progress of the investigation into the 2001 attacks. Press Secretary Dana Perino told me that she didn't even "know if he has had an update on it."

THAT ALONE is why we have $5 / gallon gasoline and an endless war, when we would be wiser to invest in renewable energy here in the USA.
Typical Republican strawman tactic: "Look over there, someone else is doing something wrong". - Jenadae, on 07/17/2008, -11/+10Get off your high rocker, both these parties are pathetic, its like flipping a 2 headed coin, but go ahead feeling like somethings gonna change...

- feignNU, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Uh...darkciti2 and cherwilco...when did Jenadae say anything about being a republican? I mean, maybe you know him from other discussions, in which case I just don't have the whole picture here...but all he (she?) ever said was that the Dems aren't really doing all that much. If anyone is using strawman tactics, it is you, darkciti, by assuming that anyone who hates on democrats must be a republican. They are so not. 9/11 was the key to all their ambitions and none of the rest of it could have happened without 9/11. Am I to think that they merely stood back and waited for the "catastrophic and catalyzing event" (according to the PNAC report) which they needed most? No, 'fraid not. The anthrax was traced back to US stockpiles beyond the shadow of a doubt but let denial reign.
- sodade, on 07/17/2008, -0/+11You know, I used to marginalize stuff like this by calling it "conspiracy theories," but when there are so many examples of conspiracy, malfeasance and profiteering, it really adds weight to 9/11 false flag claims. - pixelguru, on 07/17/2008, -1/+8Under normal circumstances (like 10 years ago) I would have agreed, but we've seen so much completely outrageous behavior from this administration, that it really can't be discounted - at least not until the contents of Cheney's safe have been emptied out and studied. Considering what we do know about (torturing prisoners, secret detention camps, spying on American citizens, the Plame case...) I shudder to think about what is on the cards that they've kept close to their chests. Could they have had a hand in at least letting 9/11 happen? Considering all that they gained from the event, it just can't be discounted - and if there's even a sliver of a chance that they were in any way involved, we simply can't let them get away with it.
- sodade, on 07/17/2008, -1/+7I'm with pixel here. I was quick to dismiss the tinfoil hat crowd and now I am wondering if some of those "kooks" were really on to something. It's not like we don't have a clear pattern of abuses that we can prove.
- ciaran036, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4"The tinfoil hat crowd".
People use that phrase to denounce a group of people as nutters. However, many people actually think that the same people actually wear tinfoil hats. - Caffeinate, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3Remember the month of October 2001? Anyone who worked at a large company was warned about mail, etc., it was a huge deal. That brought the fear home to every American. Due to the fact that once we invaded Iraq, the Anthrax story was dropped, buried and never spoken of again, it is hard to dismiss doubts in the light of what has come after.
The whole Anthrax situation, particularly who it targeted - the media, certain Senators, etc., is extremely fishy, and the fact that it is never mentioned has always bothered me. The Anthrax originated in the US, how much more evidence do we really need that there is something odd about the official "explanations" or rather, the lack thereof? Of all the things that make me question 9/11, none have ever bothered me quite like the Anthrax scare coming right on the heels of it. Remember the plastic bags and duct tape speech to protect your home in the event of a chemical attack? That was so ridiculous that we should have seen through it as fear-mongering, but it was so prevalent after 9/11 it seemed plausible.
At some point, a true investigation of Anthrax and 9/11 needs to take place. Unfortunately, it will probably be long after Bush & friends all fade off into the sunset with fat retirement portfolios, leaving future generations to clean up their messes.

- xBDVx, on 07/17/2008, -4/+10"Justice Department officials kept the investigation focused on Hatfill for almost five years, even though investigators never found any evidence linking him to the attacks." Ummm...this is *****. If anyone still remembers anything about this case, they can tell you that had a lot of evidence on Hatfill, it was just circumstantial. Hatfill, though, had the motive, opportunity, and expertise to do these attacks. They know exactly where the anthrax comes from...all they have to do is look at the DNA and they know exactly which stain it is. It comes from Ft. Detrick, and I live in the town down the road from the facility. From 2002-4, the FBI was all over the place in my town. It looked like an open and shut case, but the case would never hold up in court because they couldn't find the smoking gun. Don't get me wrong though, I'd like the guy to be brought to justice, but I think he acted alone, and managed to cover his tracks so well that it will be a long time before more evidence comes to light.
If you're going to make up some conspiracy, at least make it sound like you did some research into this, starting right here:

and don't just believe what rawstory.com tells you.- TheSkunkMonkey, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3I don't fear terrorists, I fear my government.
I lived just down the road from Fredrick and my best friends wife worked at Ft. Detrick. That this occurred there never surprised her.
There's only a finite number of people that could have accessed that strain of Anthrax. Only one employee of Ft Detrick was investigated and as you said, the circumstantial evidence was strong. By virtue of elimination, if no one else had any possible evidence linking them, Hatfill would be number one suspect and easy to prove unless they didn't want to so they could blame the terrorists.
The whole problem with the investigation is that the people involved could have easily steered it in any direction they wanted to. If you subscribe to the theory that our government was behind this and wanted to use it to foist blame on the terrorists, they would want to clear anyone they used to perpetuate the act. Lo and behold, we've not found anyone guilty and if you ask the average person who's to blame, who do you think they say? Hatfill or the Terrorists? One of the easiest ways to control the population is through fear and perception. As long as enough of the sheeple fear an imaginary bogeyman, you will be able to control them.
I don't fear terrorists, I fear my government.
The ***** has got so bad one of the motivating factors in moving away from the DC area this year, where I've lived all my 43 years, is the fact that it's a big target for the next step in our path to Fascism, either another false flag event or the Revolution to stop it. One significant terrorist attack, real or staged on US soil and Bush will have his tipping point event and allow him to invoke some serious power abuses he's given himself via executive orders in the name of fighting the Terrorist bogeymen. I saw the smoke rising from the Pentagon from my office window that day, I do not want to be that close again.
So where did I move to you ask? A US territory in the Caribbean :p

- richmomz, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2I'm surprised that the Truthers haven't pursued this issue more vigorously, as it leaves more unanswered questions than any other event related to 9/11 and is certainly a bit suspicious. It was all over the media until the strain was identified as having come from the U.S. military, specifically at Ft. Detrick. Since then the silence of the government and media on this issue has been deafining.

- magicmarker44, on 07/16/2008, -13/+64It is SO obvious that BushCo was involved in the anthrax attacks along with 9/11... it helped scare the public and Congress into doing their bidding and into handing over imperial rule to these criminal bastards.

- bbqsalad, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2Its easier to think a couple guys with box cutters did it huh? Makes more sense than our government doing it I suppose. You're the reason they get away with so much. Why question them right?
- richmomz, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1Nobody knows for sure who is responsible, but what we DO know is that the anthrax came from the U.S. military (specifically a strain from Ft. Detrick). I don't think the terrorists would have had access to these facilities, so the only other possibility was that it came from someone wanting it to look like a terrorist attack. They tried to pin this on a U.S. scientist on totally bogus evidence, and he was recently awarded millions for the loss of his professional reputation as a result. The whole thing stinks and that's exactly why nobody wants to talk about it.
- Caffeinate, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1The whole Anthrax investigation stinks to high heaven. It came from the US, but no guilty party was ever named, and the whole thing was dropped like a hot potato once it was found to be from the US?
If that does *not* make you wonder, you are someone I would like to talk to - I have some great ocean front property in Arizona you might like to purchase. Dismissing people who question the Anthrax situation as tin-foil hat wearing lunatics makes you look stupid, quite frankly.
There has been NO explanation of how US developed biological weaponry (I thought we weren't supposed to be participating in that, either, but I digress) got sent to key members of the opposition party in the Senate and members of the media. It is being "overly suspicious and paranoid" to question it? A lack of curiosity that deep and a sense of government faith that strong is pathological, and in vernacular, is called STUPIDITY.

- solistus, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5I'll be happy when the burden of proof rests on the ones who control all the evidence and resources, or when said parties at least pretend to care about finding out the truth.
- Caffeinate, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2I'm with solistus, here, I'll be happy when there is an investigation by someone that makes even a modest attempt at impartial fact finding. Impartial, being the key word - you know, someone that doesn't benefit by covering up the truth.
Considering who they would have to investigate, though, a major stumbling block to impartiality is the fact that people who can unleash Anthrax and get away with it can also do other horrible things to people they don't like to impede investigations. - solistus, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Caffeinate: Agreed. *I* sure wouldn't volunteer to be one of the people working on that case. Enemies in high places are bad news.
For the record, I'm not convinced by any of the 9/11 truther theories I've read, but the cover-ups and lack of a credible investigation leave little doubt in my mind that at least some degree of complicity at the hands of the Bush Administration was involved. The scrap from the towers was carted away and melted down for reuse before any known forensic investigation was conducted to determine exactly what happened on 9/11/01. I can't think of any explanation for such a thing other than someone with power not wanting the truth to come out. The fact that amateurs with nothing to work with beyond new media pictures of the site haven't come up with an airtight alternative theory is hardly proof that the official story is true. Many truthers cling to straw man arguments like the melting point of steel thing (steel structurally degrades and becomes non-load bearing well before it melts) rather than focusing on the blatant cover-up efforts.
Remember when Bhutto was assassinated and Pakistan immediately sprayed down the site of the crime with fire hoses, erasing most or all possible forensic evidence? We did that times a thousand after 9/11.

Lab specimens of anthrax spores, Ebola virus and other pathogens disappeared from the Army's biological warfare research facility.
The 1992 inquiry also found evidence that someone was secretly entering a lab late at night to conduct unauthorized research, apparently involving anthrax. There is only one person who fits that description. No, it’s not Bush. It’s Sun Myung Moon.

There was a Conference in the UK during the 80's which talked about the Anthrax super strain, and North Korea wasn't the likely culprit who was there.

- Naieve, on 07/17/2008, -19/+3Wow, what a bunch of tools you guys are. Inside Job?
Funny thing is that you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
You see the anthrax was made up of many different strains, including a strain that was far in advance of anything the USA or USSR ever made. We moved on to synthetic chemical weapons because it was cheaper considering our industrialized society.
I would mention a Biological Weapons Convention in the UK in the 80's and the name of the only participatory country that continued research on Anthrax, but you guys are tools. Go do your own damn research, then make up some lame excuse about a SpecOps raid by Bush to steal it and attack Americans with it. That should fit right in with these comments.- theviceroy, on 07/17/2008, -2/+9you are a naive child awash in ignorance.
We never stopped developing anthrax -- and it wasn't very special stuff anyway that was involved in the attacks... I don't know where you are getting this "more advanced than US/USSR" ***** from? Its utter rubbish, no country weaponized anthrax to a more virulent and contagious degree than the US and the Soviets. Russia actually still had biological warfare labs up and running like 6 years ago (but I guess you've never watched Frontline..).
And we (America) still have bioweapons research going on. You are really really stupid to think that we don't.

It may go to a jury.- EllenO, on 07/17/2008, -3/+0You know as well as I do that that doesn't prove that the White House did it. It just proves that it originated from the US. - obliviousfool, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3Oh boy. I was helping to solve the case, not implying that the case lead straight to the White House.
The strain, the spore count, and the chemical "weaponizing" agents used in the anthrax attacks have shown that the anthrax originated from a US government lab.
The Maureen Stevens case is a case worth following. That's the only place you'll see any information about weaponized anthrax being made public. You won't get any updates from Dana Perino! You might as well ask your dog.

- bsmeteronhigh2, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Gosh. Vague is "Santa lives where it snows". The stuff was genetically tested and independent labs say chances are it came from a specific U.S. germ warfare laboratory on a U.S. military base. I guess someone could have gone on base and shopped at the PX and dropped by the lab and not have been noticed wearing the tasteful blue hazardous materials suit. I suspect that happens every day. - blackmesa, on 07/17/2008, -3/+1Depends what you mean by "inside job". "Middle eastern terrorists" don't have the labs, but the US does. It has plenty. But bringing up such things would have been "unpatiriotic" and "living in the past." Much more important to debate whether John Kerry threw away his war medals, shot himself in the foot, conspired with Jane Fonda to install a communist dictatorship AND preemptively surrendered the War On Terror (TM), or just three out of four. - CrazedLeper, on 07/17/2008, -1/+15So they're *this* bad but above doing 9/11 themselves? They are so not. 9/11 was the key to all their ambitions and none of the rest of it could have happened without 9/11 (Katrina might not even have happened had FEMA not been busy building concentration camps). Am I to think that they merely stood back and waited for the "catastrophic and catalyzing event" (according to the PNAC report) which they needed most? No, 'fraid not. The anthrax was traced back to US stockpiles beyond the shadow of a doubt but let denial reign.

Basically saying it was a scare tactic by the neocons...?
- obliviousfool, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Yes. DNA tasting showed it was the Ames strain.
It also had a spore count which has only ever been achieved by US military labs. Other nations have tried and failed to reach such a spore count. In fact, the US has a black patent on the process.
It also showed a chemical marker. The US military uses a specific chemical to keep the anthrax from clumping. Keeping the spores powdery and dry makes them a better airborne weapon. This chemical was found in the anthrax.
If someone had made the anthrax in a homemade lab it probably wouldn't have killed anyone. US military labs have been perfecting this crap for years! You want a tough, light, powdery, deadly, high-spore count weapon. The anthrax used in the attacks was all of those things!

- richmomz, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2The story was dropped as soon as it was confirmed that the strain originated from the U.S. military at Ft. Detrick. Wonder why...
- Transporter2000, on 07/17/2008, -2/+2If you were a conspiracy nut, the anthrax scare and subsequent lack of information as to the cause is way more plausible than the gov't plotting the 9/11 attacks. - theviceroy, on 07/17/2008, -1/+7The CIA most likely pulled off the anthrax attacks. There is documentation showing they had "role-played" the exact same scenario that turned out happening. Many Spanish are now sceptical that the Madrid Bombings of 2004 may have been an inside job. It was just before a crucial election.
Originally, a Spanish terrorist group were blamed for it, but just today I read in the news that all of those accused of carrying out the attack were freed. They didn't do it. So guess who the finger is pointed at - Al Queda! Hmmm...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/1/hi/world/europe ...
I'm sure many people would be shocked to know that no-one has ever been found guilty of the Omagh bombings of 1997 in N.Ireland, which killed 30 people. It emerged in around 2000 that two undercover MI5 double-agents had been working in senior positions of the RIRA at the time of the attack. The RIRA claimed that these men were largely responsible for the attack. This claim fits in - since the RIRA gave several warnings at least 30 minutes before the bomb went off. The police came, but they evacuated the wrong area. The RIRA had not intended to kill anyone.
HOWEVER, these MI5 agents (one of them was a bomb technical expert) had told their handlers about the bomb plot and when it was going to happen. MI5 let the bomb plot go ahead. It was in their benefit to let it go ahead - a public outcry against the IRA helped to break down their violent campaign against British military occupation (and oppression) - the RIRA called on a ceasefire after the Omagh bomb.
Some of this information (including sources) are here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omagh_bombing
Guess who else infiltrated the RIRA (Real IRA) before the Omagh bombings? The FBI: http://news.scotsman.com/northernireland/FBI-agent ... (Yes, the American Federal Bureau of Investigation).
They also knew of the plot and this agent also told his handlers.
http://saoirse32.blogsome.com/2006/03/04/fbi-agent ...
I can't say for sure whether FBI or MI5 can take partial blame for planning the bomb attack, but what I can say for sure is that the intelligence agencies KNEW the attack was going to take place and did NOTHING about it. But with evidence of 9/11 being an inside job and now the anthrax attack, who knows? - supertater, on 07/17/2008, -1/+0We always get crazy republicans saying "we havent been attacked since 9/11"... if you dont talk about it it didnt happen?
