- JettaMan, on 06/14/2008, -10/+3It's sad and everything, but this guy worked for two Democrats in the 1980s before taking over Meet the Press in 1991. He illustrates the problem we have in the media where about 90% of all media personalities are Social Democrats. That's a problem that contributes to the big-government mentality that they promote. When people get their education from guys like this they think government is the solution to everything, and that's the reason all of us taxpayers are in such a huge mess. Ben Franklin said "It would be a hard government that would tax more than one tenth income." Well surprise, we are at like 40% today. No wonder the US is in the ***** and the only guy on the horizon for President thinks we should expand government even more!
- Wartyboskfapped, on 06/14/2008, -3/+2You're a moron, you know that?

- brandnewlow, on 06/14/2008, -3/+0Tribune: Tim Russert just died! Quick, get an intern to throw together a photo gallery so we can twitter it out and get it on the front page of Digg, thereby applying our immense wealth to misuse both Digg AND Twitter.
- Cfahooligan, on 06/13/2008, -0/+50I loved him. He was like a cuddly bear. I know that sounds cheesy but he has a face and voice of comfort. I liked him very much. NBC will never the same without him.
- JamesJanega, on 06/13/2008, -0/+15You're right. And those questions! Man, he just bored in. It was great watching the powerful squirm on his show when they had something to hide.
- lamiaconfitor, on 06/14/2008, -0/+5One of our last great, fair journalists...
- Ydnar723, on 06/14/2008, -0/+0Agreed, NBC will not be the same without him, even during the time of choosing a new President.
That man could un-confuse or clarify anything I had when it come to politics. I always looked for him first on TV for information when it came to politics. He will be missed, along with this white board drawings.
- Qong, on 06/13/2008, -0/+30Great pictures, this is really sad :(
Who is going to host Meet the Press now?- JamesJanega, on 06/13/2008, -0/+9Good question.
- ColonelTribune, on 06/13/2008, -0/+4What other political correspondents are at NBC? Anyone who could host THAT type of Sunday morning show?
- AndrewDB, on 06/14/2008, -3/+4Keith Olbermann, but I'm not sure he'd be up for two shows.
- heliox, on 06/14/2008, -2/+3KO !!?!!
LOL he isn't worthy to host HIS show. - mordeci, on 06/15/2008, -0/+2I love Keith Olbermann (platonically, of course). He's intelligent, informed and, above all, entertaining. Russert was intelligent, better informed (nothing against Olbermann, Russert was better informed than everyone), and completely bipartisan. KO is a lot of things, but bipartisan ain't one of them. Olbermann is great on his show, but couldn't do meet the press. I can't think of anyone in the media, NBC or anywhere else, that can do what Russert could - be that intelligent without being completely dry and painfully boring.
I was out with friends tonight and things got ugly. We split into warring factions - right and left wing. We argued all night about absolutely everything, until I brought up Russert. We all agreed he was absolutely unbiased.
- ColonelTribune, on 06/13/2008, -0/+4What other political correspondents are at NBC? Anyone who could host THAT type of Sunday morning show?
- OC73, on 06/14/2008, -0/+7That won't be decided for some time. Probably at least a year of guest hosts before a candidate is chosen. I wouldn't want to be that guy either. Those are incredibly large shoes to fill.

- preneel, on 06/13/2008, -2/+40I am so saddened by this news. I have always thought that Tim Russert was the best and in fact I think taught me a lot about politics. As I engaged in this election more than any other, he has constantly taught me more than I have ever known about politics. He has always appeared to be extremely neutral and just the best at what he did.
My thoughts are with his family, his colleagues and all those who he touched as they mourn this loss. Although I never knew him, it seems as if we've all lost a member of the family.
May God surround his family and colleagues with comfort and prayer.- Twoodge, on 06/14/2008, -12/+2"May God surround his family and colleagues with comfort and prayer."

I blame Russert for being far to cozy with the Bush agenda and carrying a lot of water for Bush pushing up the paranoia that led to the Iraq War. That ebullient personality of his served him well, but he was also pretty much a tool of the Right.
By contrast my favorite Sunday morning talk show guy Bob Schieffer has consistently asked far better and tougher questions and remained much more skeptical IMHO.- 47f0, on 06/14/2008, -4/+2Here's a big fat juicy ***** clue - if you find subjects on digg tedious, don't click on the link. - SuperMoses, on 06/14/2008, -2/+5I thought the comments section was for people who agree AND disagree with the article. Or do you want digg to be a place where only people who agree with an article can comment, therefore making it one big nuthuggin' fest.
- mentalfoto, on 06/14/2008, -2/+4Spoken with the eloquence I've come to expect from the retarded, the Bushies, the conservatives and the religious nutbags who tell everyone that disagrees to shut the hell up and get out of their way.

- SuperMoses, on 06/14/2008, -2/+5This is not the place? Are we at Russert's funeral? C'mon.. this is digg. The same place that happily bashed Falwell after he died, only the bashed got dugg up (and rightfully so).
If there's an article about a man and people are attacking the man's professionalism (not his character) then there's nothing wrong with it.. even if he has recently died. There was nothing wrong with criticizing Falwell and now there's nothing wrong with criticizing Russert. It's not like these people are going to his funeral and disrespecting his family. - mentalfoto, on 06/14/2008, -2/+4I'm not pissing on the guy's grave, I'm saying there's a LOT of people that think he was more of a glad-hander than a great journalist. He attacked tenaciously and he also let the Bushies have HUGE passes in the run-up to the war.
I thought the wall to wall coverage of his death was more than a little silly considering he wasn't some giant of the news business like a Walter Cronkite.

- 47f0, on 06/14/2008, -2/+14Tim Russert was the embodiment of everything that is vital about the first amendment. No matter how high or mighty, Tim Russert would put you an a grill and skewer you with your own words. He held himself to demanding journalistic standards, and by doing so, forced the other players in the game to bring their best - or sink. Amidst all the talking heads, with all their makeup and hair-spray and fake outrage, Tim was one of the last of a vanishing species - the pure journalist.

- tendonut, on 06/14/2008, -0/+1I knew his hometown, Buffalo, NY would be involved in this somehow the moment I got notice that he had died (around 4:00 yesterday). I work at City Hall in Buffalo and was there when it all went down. Maybe 15 minutes after I get the notice, every single news station from the area was speeding into Niagara Square throwing up their broadcast equipment getting ready to interview the mayor, Byron Brown. Maybe 10 minutes after that, the flag in the square was at half mast. Buffalo really respects their locals since nothing good ever seems to come out of the queen city. At least we still have the Goo Goo Dolls...

- mrs279, on 06/14/2008, -0/+7I don't know of any other interviewer whose guests were afraid to appear because they knew they would be questioned until they actually answered. If they repeatedly refused, they would look like cowards constantly trying to avoid a response. Tim was unbiased and objective in a time when America really needed clarity and common sense. Who can forget Cheney's response to Tim that "We'll be greeted as liberators"? The fact that Meet the Press was so widely watched and highly regarded actually gave me hope that Americans can see through all the spin, boil out all of the lies and irrelevant facts, and reach a middle ground through reason on important matters.
I bought an autographed picture of Tim Russert 4 years ago to hang in front of my desk. It reminded me of what it looks like to be someone who does his job the right way week in and week out. Tim Russert was never out-researched and never came to a "meeting" under prepared. You could tell he genuinely cared about his work and took great pride in a job well done. His respect for his father and his blue collar respect for hard work were incredible traits for someone in his position to carry. I will honor Tim's memory this Father's Day by writing a letter to my own dad.
The terms hero and role model are thrown around a lot, and it waters down the true rare qualities that those words ascribe to a person. I do not use the terms loosely. America lost hero and role model in Tim Russert. He was a once in a century figure. I hope I'm lucky enough to see his true successor, and I feel extremely lucky to have enjoyed a mind like his working for the best interests of America. Thanks, Tim. What a country. - dagamer34, on 06/14/2008, -0/+2Russert was one of the few journalists today that cared more about reporting the news than being the news. And he tried his hardest not to have any bias in his reporting.
We shall miss you. Rest in peace. - NeutrixX, on 06/14/2008, -2/+2Tim went far too early at 58. Heart disease, and very little mentioned about it. Main killer amongst males and females, and yet very little attention drawn to the fact that more than likely this was a preventable death. Get that? Preventable death. He died before his 80 year old father did. Does this not raise flags and should it not be a major part of the story? Let it be a warning to all of those whom might be choosing to work themselves to death, not take care of their weight, and perhaps not get enough excercise. I also appreciated much of his work, but he choose the low road when interviewing Scott McClellan, when Tim suggested that Scott have a war fund for disabled veterans (because it was insinuated that Scott helped sell the war to Americans). That was pure low ball sh*t. I say Tim was as complicit in letting the President wage the fear based war, as Scott was. He touted the exact same media lines as a majority of MSM does. I never thought of Tim the same way after that. And for the fact he enjoyed the amount of pandering and how enthusiastic he was about the democratic nomination. Never once did he mention disgust for the over bloated "war chests" of money wasted and the fact that millions were spent in this race. He relished in that whole process. I think that alone was a rather repulsive point of view coming from him.

- SuperMoses, on 06/14/2008, -2/+9To everyone digging those who were critical of Russert by saying "Dude, don't speak ill of the dead".. or "now's not the time" *****, just remember this: http://digg.com/world_news/Rev_Jerry_Falwell_leade ... (read the comments being dugg up)
So let's be honest, some people don't like the criticism of Russert not because he just died, but because they think Russert was actually a good journalist. And now that he's dead, the comments on here being dugg up are all ones that make it seem like he was the greatest journalist ever. (Ya.. the same guy who didn't ask any critical quetions in the lead up to the Iraq War and who Bill Moyers made look like a tool).
If the digg masses hate the guy (like Falwell) they'll have no problem digging critical comments up, even after he just died. So don't give us this ***** about how we shouldn't speak "ill of the dead" unless you're going to apply that same principle when someone like Cheney dies.
That being said. Falwell was a douche and Russert was a bad journalist.- trumpcard, on 06/14/2008, -0/+4Most diggers are phonies, vulnerable and not consistent, thats the way the internet works.Just don't give a *****.

- Canadiangeezer, on 06/14/2008, -1/+2Tim was eloquent and yet aware of what questions we commoners appreciated being asked of those who walked the larger stage. Kind and wondering eyes and an strong sense of public responsibility tied with love of family and community. Tim had the strength of the eternal ethic of faith in the goodness of men & women.
You always felt that he was earnestly after the larger issue and story that could be found upon due and diligent query. Mr. Russert had that great integrity and humility that all the decent messengers of the “Press” comport themselves with.
Rest in Peace for you have made the world a better place in a measurable way ... Truly a man who qualified as a 'Mensch' … just praise for one who stepped out from the heart of his Catholic upbringing but retained all its moral and ethical precepts in his daily duty. - jhbush1973, on 06/14/2008, -1/+2Why is everyone so sad about this guy? He was part of the MSM and it's propaganda machine. He got more coverage than people who did something and more coverage than the real issues that the MSM doesn't want to report. I'm sorry he died so young, but it's not like he cured anything or inspired a generation. I personally thought he did a lousy job at the debates.
- SuperMoses, on 06/14/2008, -1/+1It's groupthink. And I'm sure many diggers watched the coverage on the MSM talking about how Tim Russert was the greatest journalist ever, so they felt sympathetic and the need to buy that line.
He asked loaded questions like this in the democratic debate:
Russert: I want to ask each of you the same question. Senator Clinton, would you pledge to the American people that Iran will not develop a nuclear bomb while you are president?
Way to buy the Bush line that Iran intends to develop a nuclear bomb.
- SuperMoses, on 06/14/2008, -1/+1It's groupthink. And I'm sure many diggers watched the coverage on the MSM talking about how Tim Russert was the greatest journalist ever, so they felt sympathetic and the need to buy that line.

- GeneralCopper, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1Poor Tim... he was a cool guy.
- JagPop, on 06/15/2008, -1/+1Was struck when I saw the headline about Russert.
I won't fake that I thought anything good of Russert, I was struck
because of his age and I am linked with plenty the same age as him.
When I turned on the television the "news people" were taking
their turns eulogizing him. I said to my wife as we watched, "what a
fate, to be eulogized by a bunch of liars". My wife told me to chill.
My eulogy to Tim Russert is simply this: "We are still in Iraq".
Is it not fitting that less than a moon ago Scott McClellan
called the media "complicit enablers"?
I listened to Bob Schieffer who bottom-lined Russert: "...and
foremost: he dug for the truth" (approximate quote). I put my finger down
my throat at that one.
Then came Keith Olbermann. I enjoy his schtick of farting in the
general direction of the Bushmen. I listened to Olbermann carefully
and his use of adjectives was rather innocuous and noncommital.
But there was one adjective in particular that I strongly suspect was
carefully chosen (it was in Keith's delivery), we may never know for sure.
But Keith called Russert an "ASSet".- JagPop, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1I just came across this tidbit about Russert:
"But behind the scenes, Russert was also a senior vice president and head of NBC’s Washington operations, orchestrating all of the network’s coverage of government and political news."
Russert was a double-wide asset.

What did Scott McClellan less than a moon ago say about the media?
