- TheBigBrother, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Look at NYC, it seems the most geotagged spot in one of the world's biggest cities is a certain 30 x 30 x 30ft glass cube

- abbtech, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Flickr needed a cool feature like this to stay fresh, nice job!

http://hackedgadgets.com - xamox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What is nice is that it imports your geotags if you were using it before they had the feature.
There was a really nice bookmarklet I used to perform it before flickr had the ability.

- molsen311, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9that's great. i think it's an awesome feature!
- Zench, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2wow...
- steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -54/+3before anybody else says it:
OMFG THATZ FAST!!!......
Now back to your normally scheduled Digg.com comments
Digg me up and I'll give FREE BJ'S!!!- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -18/+13if i digg you down, do i get a handjob?
- TyrannousDotNet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Thanks so much for the feature flickr!
- dotdan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36If Flickr had a nickel for every time someone geotagged..
They'd all die a horrible death under an avalanche of nickels.- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6all they need to do is ad a strip of text ads and have em refresh every time you submit a new geotag. Massive amounts of cash could be gained by doing that.
You know, I'm amazed flickr didn't crash under that much traffic.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6all they need to do is ad a strip of text ads and have em refresh every time you submit a new geotag. Massive amounts of cash could be gained by doing that.
- Malicious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Only 183 short of a conspiracy theorists wet dream.
- itanshi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2mm really, they giving up their addresses here?
- drchadwick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Combine photos' embedded EXIF data with geotagging and you can get a pretty good little picture of where someone goes. Add GPS-tagged cameraphone shots and you've got a stalker's wet dream.
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -25/+4nice feature.. but.. i just wish they would work on the look of the site too!
is it just me who considers this to be one of the most horrible minimal designs out there?
google pull it off nicely, but flickr seem to have stumbled along the way- monkeycat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I think the people who have uploaded 200,000,000 photos to flickr would disagree.
- cshontz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Quite the contrary. In my opinion, Flickr's interface is one of its strongest features - a model of efficiency. More sites should emulate this.
- shockingbird, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Really? 100s of other sites have photo sharing, comments and similar features yet this one stands out among all the others. They're doing something right. The design is clean and easy to follow.
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2well, im a very active member of deviantArt since the changeover to V4 all that time ago.. and in my opinion, V4 of deviantArt was absolutly horrible to look at, so i dont think your argument holds much ground to be honest monkeycat.
its not that flickr isnt very functional, im complaining about the visuals. I find the lines to be too hard, and the colours tend to clash.
The pink buttons for example, are disgusting. - Qoogirl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I agree with you--only, I dislike Google's style too. The colors look cheap. I hate them. Flickr is a bit better with "effects" on things like Organizr, but I dislike the way Organizr sorts and scrolls...but there's no other choice, so I survive. I doubt I will use geotagging much--maybe only for vacation. It seems like a way for Yahoo! to promote its Yahoo! Maps beta.
- CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5will the next story on homepage read: "5 million Flickr photos geotagged, after the new feature is spread amongst Digg community"?
- TheSaladMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Behold the wonderous speed of the internet, step right up, ladies, gentlemen, children of all ages and witness this spectacular showing of..... Ooh that picture's in Canada.
- happyrobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I am pretty sure that my company lost a good 3 or 4 productive hours to my Geotagging yesterday and today. There's something very addictive about it.
- mstar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I know the one I'm at did.
- adjustafresh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Great feature - tagged a few myself earlier today.
Waiting for the inevitable parent group's outrage because some stupid kid uploaded some pictures of themself, geotagged the shots with their home address and some perverted sex offender showed up at the kid's door.- TheSaladMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It's gonna happen, you'll see some overweight mother on TV with an 80s hair style talking about how her child's "Suffering constant abuse" because of Flickr, then she'll talk about sueing Flickr for some crazy amount instead of actually trying to deal with the problem.
- shockingbird, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You know it will happen.
Perv user: Giggity! Check out that chick... ALLL RIIIIIIGHT! Whoa! Her address! Giggity giggity goo! - slippin84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I didn't geotag any of the pictures of my daughter that I took at home. Other than that, I love the feature. Especially because you can see other peoples views of the exact same place. Amazing.
- Grimboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never quite understand why people think that information like this on the Internet will cause child-molesters to target those particular addresses. Such information is available just by roaming around houses and seeing which ones children are playing around. Also, I imagine most child-molesters are opportunists and wouldn't do such planning (although it must vary).
Still, I suppose despite this, better safe than sorry. - kmarius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It seems like something happens to a persons logic when they become a parent. And combined with the US legal system, it's a lawyer's wet dream.
- bpinard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is a GREAT feature.
yet another reason to prefer flickr over zooooooooooooomr - hotpepper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just wish they offered geotagging on the photo page.
- seaner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think I am at least 0.5% of those. I tagged thousands yesterday.
- djinfidel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I think it would have been cooler had 1,234,567 people did it in 24 hrs
- hitkaiser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I was away for the weekend, when I found out about this (about 12 hours ago) I decided to give it a try...
The result, 641 photos tagged, many of which I tracked down precise street positions via hints in photos! (How sad is that?)
The bad thing about this geotagging is you can't actually see all the tags in one map, they divide it up into pages:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/hitkaiser/map - Qtip42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This would be great for the real estate market or even small businesses.
- webtekie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1big deal, www.fotki.com had it for a very long time. flkr is overrated IMO
- MightyGiant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Other than forcing you to use Yahoo Maps, sounds great!
- LKBM, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Indeed. I found myself searching my photo locations on Google and then comparing maps to find it on Flickr. Yahoo Maps apparently sucks at searching.
- Norby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whelp, the API is open now - use whatever maps you like now (and TTBOMK, there have been greasemonkey scripts for using Google Maps for some time now).
-/\/
- tms8707056, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0About 1,200 of those were my photos. I love geotagging.
- drakonite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am I the only one that stops and wonders if something is up when they see numbers that start with "1234" ?
- Burritovision, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1this is a really poor idea in my opinion. I am not much interested in making that information 100% public. Although it might be optionally handy.
- LKBM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can select to make it viewable only to your contacts listed as friends or family. Or just not geotag them, of course.
- steamedlice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If I were a realtor, I'd be having a geotag-gasm right about now. Great update, flickr (they probably did this at the request of their community).
- shoeblade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Here is the flickr geotagging group.
http://www.flickr.com/groups/geotagging/ - darkmane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1+digg
I just wish that flickr had done a better job of implementing this. There was already an active geotagging community and people like myself who uploaded photos with location information already embedded in the photo and they did nothing to pull that information into their database. I've already done the work, made sure it was in a recognized format, why should I have to redo it for their solution?- jaytee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2did you try this:
http://www.flickr.com/account/geo/import
(that is, assuming you are talking about pictures you have already uploaded to flickr and geotagged) - darkmane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, I hadn't, but they didn't register the data in the EXIF for my files, so unfortunately it's still not supporting a recognized standard.
- GerryNiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.flickr.com/account/geo/exif
yes they are.
- jaytee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2did you try this:
- mpeng168, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this is so worth a flick--er digg. i'm surprised it doesn't have words like the best or ever
- lochness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Great feature. Another great reason to love Flickr.
pity the detail on the maps isn't a patch on Google's (for areas that are NOT the USA of course) - prosthetichead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ya would be grate if they had usable maps of Australia! yahoo maps is just not usable in Australia!
- cburgdorfer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can actually use any normal GPS and any normal digital camera to geotag your photos. All you need is to sync the time of both devices and a piece of software that brings both data together. I blogged about this a while a go in case you're interested: http://emcons.net/blog/index.php/2006/08/14/pin-down-your-digital-photos-on-a-map-with-a-gps/
- Defragged, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yahoo! maps is a little disapointing for non-US locations. No satellite map for the UK, and nothing but very major roads. I can't even pinpoint my own house on it!
- temujin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0One of the coolest features Flickr had launched lately! My photos are already "geotagged": http://www.flickr.com/photos/t3mujin/map/
- WoahPuppets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i was surprised to learn this came out yesterday...cause i was playing with it last night and i had no idea it was new
- Crappieattitude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another cool new photo site just launched that takes a spin on scavenger hunts using photo's. It's called fotograb.com. Chances to win stuff like iPods & gift cards. Pretty cool.
