      *****. If they wanted to FUND the service, they'd display ads on like 1/1000 of all impressions. Not every. They're making excess cash now, no doubt. Just ask anyone with a webpage with adsense ads on them.. hosting costs are _nothing_ unless you have a seriously retarded broken business model.

      Google got in trouble for offering cached copies of sites but courts ruled it was fair use *only* because Google wasn't profiting from it by displaying their ads on the cached copies.

      There's a reason Google doesn't show ads on their cached copies of sites. Duggmirror might want to look into it.

    • thenikola, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ f00xx0riz3r: You're thinking in terms of an average users hosting account where they give you an unreasonable ammount of bandwidth so you think the hosting plan is amazing and all of that jazz. Well that is amazing for a normal site, but for a site like DuggMirror and Digg, their hosting costs hundreds of dollars a month because of the load the servers have to take, they are actually probably running multiple servers do distribute the load. Basically the point im making is that their hosting isn't cheap and it is very unlikely that they are making a profit from this.

It's still nowhere "much", but compared to being digged on a couple of html-files it is. This is ***** from the creators of this script which clearly just wants to make money from offering a service that isnt needed (see google cache, nyud, archive.org etc, all ad-free alternatives),

I'm pretty sure DuggMirror claims to be fair use and I was just wondering, if the ads conflict with that interpretation. Google for instance has no ads on top of cached pages for a reason.

      Pointing out that DuggMirror has expenses to cover or that their service is well-liked doesn't actually contribute to the issue whether their service is legal in the first place. If those were valid arguments, Napster would still be a free P2P-application with ads to pay for bandwidth costs.

    • misteryxz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+490% of ad-profits donated to charity technically means, that after paying their bills they keep 10% of what is left. So it is not a non-profit project.

      And even if they donated 100% of ad-profits or 90% of ad-income while making no profits their ads would still clearly compete with ads placed on the cached sites, hurting the business of the original content providers.

      The ads are not a good idea in terms of passing off as "fair use".

I like this one much better because it flows better with the digg css and overall look. It looks like it belongs there, where the Add Mirrors script always looked like it was just added on at the end. My point is your script doesn't look like a script, where as Add Mirrors does. Good Job!
