DuggMirror Greasemonkey Script
cannedlaughter.net — The Digg Effect is a cruel thing. Install this script and you'll see an automatic mirror link to the story in below the description, powered by DuggMirror. Broken links begone!
- 981 diggs
- digg it
- Bobboes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Very useful +digg
- blobzorz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Wow, this is better than searching someone's post for the duggmirror link :P
- KillerJ59J, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You can aslo try the Firefox extension CacheIt!, if your using Firefox, that is. :)
http://www.selbyk.com/extensions.php - Raveren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I find Resurrect Pages extension better
http://www.arantius.com/article/resurrect
- misteryxz, on 10/12/2007, -37/+8Regarding DuggMirror: the mirrored story pages contain AdSense ads in favor of DuggMirror. How is that legal and not copyright violation on behalf of DuggMirror? I doubt this can be considered "fair use".
- Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23I don't really see why they have ads, most people on digg use Adblock...
- lucask, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23they are providing a service, they must fund that service some how, therefore ads.
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21The ads are to pay for the bandwith. DuggMirror works better that anything I have ever tried before. I have no problem with the ads because that's just a small price to pay for the service.
Money doesn't grow on trees! - f00xx0riz3r, on 10/12/2007, -29/+3"I don't really see why they have ads, most people on digg use Adblock..."
Yeah thats a very controversial statement taking out of thin air. I'd like to ad "most people on digg are black, straight and like dell pcs".
How about that for a fact?! - f00xx0riz3r, on 10/12/2007, -23/+3"they are providing a service, they must fund that service some how, therefore ads."
*****. If they wanted to FUND the service, they'd display ads on like 1/1000 of all impressions. Not every. They're making excess cash now, no doubt. Just ask anyone with a webpage with adsense ads on them.. hosting costs are _nothing_ unless you have a seriously retarded broken business model. - ismoke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Hosting costs are nothing until the day your site gets linked on the digg.com frontpage.
- nacs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'm not sure why he's getting buried but actually, parent poster is correct.
Google got in trouble for offering cached copies of sites but courts ruled it was fair use *only* because Google wasn't profiting from it by displaying their ads on the cached copies.
There's a reason Google doesn't show ads on their cached copies of sites. Duggmirror might want to look into it. - teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I just assume they[duggmirror] go by the same model as mirrordot.com
Which is: Everyone else does it, so I can too. http://www.mirrordot.com/faq/#faq3
That's all just fine and dandy by me. - thenikola, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ f00xx0riz3r: You're thinking in terms of an average users hosting account where they give you an unreasonable ammount of bandwidth so you think the hosting plan is amazing and all of that jazz. Well that is amazing for a normal site, but for a site like DuggMirror and Digg, their hosting costs hundreds of dollars a month because of the load the servers have to take, they are actually probably running multiple servers do distribute the load. Basically the point im making is that their hosting isn't cheap and it is very unlikely that they are making a profit from this.
- f00xx0riz3r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3thenikola: nope. I run three dedicated servers myself. Two of them are pumping data in the range of terabytes / month. It's still nowhere "much", but compared to being digged on a couple of html-files it is. This is ***** from the creators of this script which clearly just wants to make money from offering a service that isnt needed (see google cache, nyud, archive.org etc, all ad-free alternatives),
- misteryxz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One could argue that their "service" is to provide third party content without the copyright holders' permission. I'm pretty sure DuggMirror claims to be fair use and I was just wondering, if the ads conflict with that interpretation. Google for instance has no ads on top of cached pages for a reason.
Pointing out that DuggMirror has expenses to cover or that their service is well-liked doesn't actually contribute to the issue whether their service is legal in the first place. If those were valid arguments, Napster would still be a free P2P-application with ads to pay for bandwidth costs. - Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4duggmirror will be gone the moment it pisses someone off enough. It's content theft and not fair use.
- fredinator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1From the "about duggmirror" section:
"What's up with the ads, they're annoying and aren't you taking money from Digg by doing this? The ads on our homepage are the normal Google Ads for Digg so a click on that will benefit Digg, not DuggMirror. We show ads on every page that we mirror to help cover hosting/bandwidth charges. 90% of profits (if any) from those ads are donated to charity: half to EFF, half to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute." - misteryxz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+490% of ad-profits donated to charity technically means, that after paying their bills they keep 10% of what is left. So it is not a non-profit project.
And even if they donated 100% of ad-profits or 90% of ad-income while making no profits their ads would still clearly compete with ads placed on the cached sites, hurting the business of the original content providers.
The ads are not a good idea in terms of passing off as "fair use".
- trib4lmaniac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6For those of you who prefer digg links to open in the same window, remove the line a.target = "_blank"; from the file and all will be well.
- xur217, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I like this part of the article:
"This has been a problem for a long time, it happens to Slashdot too, only it doesn’t have a solution."
Too bad they haven't checked out mirrordot. http://www.mirrordot.com/- Surreal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Haha, yeah I was thinking exactly the same thing.
Also, digg has had a solution for a while: (digg add mirrors script)
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/1807 - XxN3RDC0R3xX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Mirrordot hurts my eyes =(
- Surreal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Haha, yeah I was thinking exactly the same thing.
- gk128, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11It's a cool script.
As for the ad thing... they have to support the site somehow. - roflcpt3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I was waiting for this
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yesss... This is so useful, I've been asking for this.
- robotsongs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Install'd and used'd! Digg'd!
Thanks! .... 'D - Surreal, on 10/12/2007, -12/+9A solution has been out for a very long time it's called "Add Mirrors" and it is a greasemonkey script.
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/1807- f00xx0riz3r, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Why the hell is this comment being burried unless some worthless scumbags behind this so called "service" are abusing diggs moderating system? If you cant take that the competition is better than you, then dont post your crap to digg.
- bradr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Easy there! His comment is being burried because it was redundant. Look up about 5 posts. Yeah...there you go..exact same post.
- robotsongs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2or because it was vindictive...
- Surreal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yeah, sorry for posting it twice.
- tomalakborg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Pwnage! This is a quality addon considering I live at digg.com --- thank you!
- WrecksTXP, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I can't open it!!! Digg effect!!! AAAAAAAH.
Just kidding ;)- SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4My site doesn't crumble that quickly boy ;)
- WrecksTXP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hence the "Just kidding" part ;)
- SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yeah, I know, sarcasm's a bit of a challenge to portray over text :)
- wolver1ne, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Dugg.. handy *****. :D
- Numfar28, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yay! Works for Opera User Javascript too (and doesn't require the browser to be restarted).
- goodshape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Firefox Greasemonkey extension (you'll need this) ::
http://greasemonkey.mozdev.org/ - joshfraz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this may be a obvious question... but what about pages that are more than just text? what about all those AJAX pages that are so popular on digg? how will they work without access to the server side code?
- f00xx0riz3r, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Answer: not at all. This is merely a cruel hack to imitate the page and robs the rightful owner of a page his/her right to ad income and impressions.
Voted as lame, theres nothing to see here, just move along ... - SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@joshfraz: Simple answer, they won't as DuggMirror isn't as good as the real thing, but it's better to be able to view a mirrored or cached page than none at all.
@f00xx0riz3r: (***** name btw) you're marking the wrong article as lame if you don't like DuggMirror
- f00xx0riz3r, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Answer: not at all. This is merely a cruel hack to imitate the page and robs the rightful owner of a page his/her right to ad income and impressions.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Script works like a charm with Opera.
- deboosher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yes! way easier than searching comments for the dugg mirror
DUGG! - pornel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why not incorporate this functinality into Digg site itself?
- LR2_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I like very much how subtle this script is. They could have included some lame icon next to the title; but they decided for the clean look. Great job grease monkey script guys!
- SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1guy* It's just me. Thanks to digg's very good mark-up I was able to include the link with the class of "tool" and digg's css did all the rest of the work about styling it the same as the other bits of data in that area.
- sonoca, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1This is cool but i cant digg it my firefox cant extensions.
And all they do when i ask for help is blame me =( - NzeeSheikh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2very nice thing to have it.
- freeman755, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Anyone else notice that in the before screen shot there are 35 comments, and in the after screen shot, there are 33 comments? What's up with that?
- sublimethinker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Bravo! Very useful!
- Holocaust, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Really nice! +digg
- l0ne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Works great with Safari + Creammonkey. Digg!
- InvisibleMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Very nice, I had Add Mirrors script for a while then I lost it when I reformatted my hard drive a while ago. I like this one much better because it flows better with the digg css and overall look. It looks like it belongs there, where the Add Mirrors script always looked like it was just added on at the end. My point is your script doesn't look like a script, where as Add Mirrors does. Good Job!
