Encode a binary file - like an image, or even an MP3! - into a text URL
hackszine.com — I discovered a URI called "data:" today which allows you to encode any amount of file data into a URL. This data could be an image, ascii text, xml data, you name it. You'll have to read the details, but you use it like this: data:image/jpeg;base64,base_64_encoded_jpeg_goes_here

This is particularly good for single-file PHP scripts as it lowers effort needed to maintain it (I hate it when certain packages spread files all over my webspace!) The simple file browser on my website for example, uses them, keeping it all extremely neat and contained. I'd say that's pretty 'brilliant'.

Frankly, I don't quite see how replicating an image in Base64 across a bunch of different files makes it MORE maintainable. If anything, having to change it in every location would make it less maintainable. Further, sending one large chunk of information (a whole page with all its images embedded as Base64 strings) is less efficient, overall, than sending multiple small chunks. The application spends less time responding to each individual request and any latency is spread in smaller chunks throughout the requesting pool.

It all depends on your perspective. Sure, you can dump everything into one file and call it "maintainable" because it's all in on location. But I don't think most people would consider that maintainable. You can take this to the other extreme where everything is in includes with includes inside includes inside includes. (I've seen this first hand at large financial services firm).
Honestly, I don't really see the benefit of using data: unless you have an image already Base64 encoded, e.g. if you request an image via web services. Even then, I would use a separate class to alter the response header's content-type to image/jpeg and decode the image before sending it. - Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Put a file into a jpg:

This is patently false. There is a lot of overhead in creating a TCP connection and then closing that connection. There's so much overhead that somebody invented HTTP pipelining to get around the issue somewhat. HTTP pipelining is a way to sort of emulate one large chunk of information instead of multiple small chunks. Believe me when I tell you that no one went through the trouble of inventing a new specification in order to slow things down.
As far as latency being "spread in smaller chunks", again I think you don't understand what you are writing. If it takes 100ms to open a connection and start sending data, 10 connections in series will take 1000ms not 10ms, and 10 connections in parallel will still take 100ms. - david76, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2@jerbaker
I was talking about the overall experience of each user. Even if it takes the same amount of time, each user will experience less continuous latency because the latency will be spread out over multiple requests. It's the same concept as packet switching vs. circuit switching. By your logic, you shouldn't use packet switching because it still takes the same amount of time regardless of how many connections it takes. A guy wrote a browser-based game, "Wolfenstein 5K" which was 5 KB of Javascript - it wrote out the display as XBM-formatted images, which are those old-skool 1-bit human-readable text-based images web servers used to show when browsing a directory of files.

"Load fewer external objects. Due to request overhead, one bigger file just loads faster than two smaller ones half its size. Figure out how to globally reference the same one or two javascript files and one or two external stylesheets instead of many; if you have more, try preprocessing them when you publish them. If your UI uses dozens of tiny GIFs all over the place, consider switching to a much cleaner CSS-based design which probably won't need so many images. Or load all of your common UI images in one request using a technique called "CSS sprites"."

If I understand you correctly, you're not arguing that the total load time is reduced by creating more requests, you're saying that there is less load time before something happens on screen, meaning the user feels as if the load time is reduced.
To a certain extent this is true. The table tag does not display until the ENTIRE table tag has been parsed in most browsers, which is why most forums display each post in each thread inside of a seperate table, (inside the main table of course). It's because of how HTML render engines handle DOM objects.
You are right, multiple requests creates an illusion of faster loading. jerbarker is also right, the actual loading time is smaller in one large file.
It depends on what is more important for your website. If you have a 300kb page full of text, using multiple tables to display some of the text while the rest is loading, or not using tables at all, (Div layers work the same way as far as display goes), might be beneficial. This also increases the overall size of the page however, and also increases the memory footprint that a specific website will leave on the browser. Aside from the fact there IE 6 lacks the support, this would severely increase page loads. The idea of links is that we can pass a small pointer pointer to a larger piece of data. As such, we obviously never have to worry about transferring the large chunk of data unless we actually want it. By embedding the data into the URL, we've forced the transmission.

On the note of this data encoding, I'm not sure the increase in size is worth this scheme. using obfuscation and mod deflate may be an answer to most bandwidth issues, but this just reverses that trend.
