IBM focuses on Drupal for new developerWorks series
drupal.org — The popular IBM developerWorks site has started a new series entitled "Using open source software to design, develop, and deploy a collaborative Web site". After reviewing numerous open source packages such as Typo3, Mambo, and the ever-hyped Ruby on Rails, they "decided to use Drupal". Read more at Drupal.org.

- panatlantica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Absolutely great article - very profound research on the major open source CMS around and a very good reasoning on the choice of Drupal for a collaborative website project!
- texpundit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4They're not the only ones. I work for a high-profile policy think tank in DC and we're moving from a custom ColdFusion CMS to Drupal. I'm working on the theme for the site right now...in between checking Digg for news. ;)
I'm also working on a bunch of entreprenurial sites (commercial sites) on the side and I'm using Drupal for almost every one of them. The learning curve is steep, but it's *massively* customizable and configurable with a ton of community support.

- e03179, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Basically, IBM said Drupal met their needs better than other open source CMS alternatives, including open source blogging services like WordPress, TextPattern, and Movable Type. IBM said that Drupal has a learning curve but once you get over the curve, it becomes very powerful, scalable, and extendable.
It's nice to see a major player like IBM backing Drupal. Google is also sponsoring 14 projects within the Drupal development.
I know Drupal runs major websites like SpreadFirefox and the Onion. However, I found 2 really cool Drupal-based websites this weekend:

also is is not complete thrue, for example drupal can be served by any httpd that does php which is more than iis and apache. - itsnotvalid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And surely apache is also a database engine.

- blueigloo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Awww, read that as "over-hyped Ruby on Rails". But good choice IBM, drupal rocks. Pick something thats more then just the fad of the moment.
- TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I think Ruby on Rails is a little more than the "fad of the moment" if that's what you were trying to say. Also, why would they even include RoR in the comparison? It's not a CMS by any means, it's a web development framework plain and simple. I also find it interesting that they say it's "blog centric" ? What the hell does that mean? It's blog centric if I write a freakin BLOG with it. That's like saying Struts is blog centrics. No, it's just a development framework.
- TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3By the way, I'm not knocking Drupal, it's an excellent content management system. But let's compare apples and apples shall we?
- sonofalink, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4For someone who thinks Ruby On Rails is over-hyped, you sure seem to have no friggin' clue what it is. "Oh! I know! For a CMS we could use PHP... I hear thats an awesome CMS!"
- restonian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Ruby is a programming language and Rails is a development framework. RoR should be compared to Java or .NET not to a canned CMS. It was silly for IBM to throw rRoR into this mix of product comparisons.
- Bloodwine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ruby may be compared to .NET or Java, but not RoR. Actually, .NET is a completely different beast altogether, but you could compare Ruby to C#.NET or VB.NET
RoR is a framework running on top of a language. It's just that we never hear about people using Ruby without Rails.
I don't think Drupal is quite the same beast as RoR, but it makes more sense to compare RoR and Drupal than RoR and Java. - lwatcdr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't get too bent over IBM's comments about ROR.
They never say it is over-hyped.
And they do understand that it isn't a CMS.
From the artical,
" Typical content management systems allow authenticated users to create content forming pages as part of a Web site. Ruby On Rails (ROR), however, does not provide this out of the box. It provides a Web application framework. Using ROR, you can build a custom CMS from scratch.
At the time of our project, there was a huge buzz around ROR, mainly promoted by 37Signals and its impressive array of real online ROR applications such as Base Camp.
We liked the way the bindings to the database through the framework lived up to the hype. These did help speed up those repetitive parts of development that hook to your database table columns.
At the time of our investigation, the framework was somewhat blog centric. Stability was an issue, but we recognized its potential for use on future projects.
Creating a custom CMS has its appeal. For example, with a custom solution we could have created a themable administrative interface. But, given our time restrictions, we needed a CMS framework to build on. " - thabenksta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0IBM obviously has some interest in Rails, consider the many articles they've published on the subject.

I hope the internet dies a horible death; the human race would be better off. - kracker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3lol, throwing drops for the interview I just did ;)
Nod, like you can't understand :P
I really like what IBM is doing in each of these series!
I just do not understand why IBM or another major
f/oss web framework integrators have not reviewed
the (cms/cmf/framework) eZ publish ? http://ez.no/community

KMK - People Come, People Go - Xenotoxin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, given that IBM has developed a decent piece of software in the past ten years, I guess it was only inevitable that they jump on the open source band wagon.
- robdeadtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3One of the best drupal sites out there. http://www.chicagoartistsresource.org.
A community site for artists supported by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.
2000 links in the directory.
over 200 articles
about 7 custom modules including a job board, spacefinder, calls for artists.
Really shows the power of Drupal over a blog. - CrownSeven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well its great that IBM is supporting an open source group like Drupaul, but to be honest IBM makes some of the worst, over-complicated software out there. Their hardware is great, software not so good (eg: Eclipse vs WSAD)
- opethlike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I work for a web development company that builds websites for newspapers. We recently launched a site with Drupal and have received a great response. http://new.savannahnow.com/
The look and feel we can get with this CMS is a refreshing change for some of the sites newspapers run.- mokolabs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice job, opethlike! I used to live in Savannah and the old Savannah Now site was almost unusable.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Drupal FTW!
- Bishoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm definitely interested in Drupal. Leo Laporte over at This Week in Tech mentioned on the TWiT podcast that he uses Drupal for the TWiT website. I going to be creating a very content based site in the next few months and I may use Drupal for it.
- dhoefler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1FYI: Ruby on Rails is not a CMS.
- sigterm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I can't comment on Drupel, but I really don't like PHP. Do you guys know of any opensource java based cms solutions?
- clouseau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try alfresco.
But when we tried Java, our development pace slowed markedly. (We use Drupal now.) - dev65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't like Java but look at opencms.org
- clouseau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try alfresco.
- chadly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0We just migrated our company Intranet to Drupal and it has worked out great. We tried Joomla (Mambo) initially, but it just didn't fit. Drupal is much more flexible and well layed out.
- spyres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Joomla/mambo have some nice eye candy, but if one ever wants to really customize them much, well good luck...
- bryanzug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0have been looking at this space for a few years and this seems like a significant development. was at drupal camp in seattle a couple of weeks ago and it was a blast to connect with different devs and web houses using it.
- kasa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great article, and drupal really rocks !
- dev65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Drupal is a great choice.
- rekka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As it happens, I'm working on a Drupal site at the moment. It's good stuff. Glad to have IBMs support :)
- diggitydoggity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We have been using drupal for our site, http://www.developers.net, for over 2 years and it has been both good and bad. There are lots of features that we have heavily customized and now I don't think we can ever upgrade to a newer version! Oh well. We did evaluate several open source CMS packages at the time and it seemed like the best choice (though we actually prefer Java and were hoping to find a viable Java OS CMS). Glad to hear that people are still using and supporting it in case we ever do take the plunge and upgrade :)
- evakoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This thread is old but I'd like to give another plug to drupal in case anyone finds it through the search engines and is considering a switch to Drupal. I've developed 30+ sites so far in drupal and noticed that each site has improved in the search engines showing an increase in the number of pages indexed in Google and improved keyword rankings.
I've used Joomla and many other CMS systems and I'm convinced that Drupal is the best CMS for not just a collaborative website but also the best CMS for marketing a small business and reducing operating costs. An example I'd like to highlight is: http://www.sugarhollowretreat.com - before they had a hard to use custom cms. Since the switch to Drupal, the site has increased search engine traffic by 20% and site updates are made in 1/2 the time as the old CMS. - vladimirmilici, on 12/07/2007, -0/+0Drupal is a great choice, even many plugins are buggy. It is not suited for high traffic websites.
