Paste an email, get Google map visual trace of the route
butterfat.net — Those crazy ( http://digg.com/software/Google_map_of_open_webcam_s ) Goocam people did it again: paste in an email and they plot it on google maps.

- Blackscorpion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Cool idea but it looks like it needs work.
- tdlrali, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2haha, one of my mails that i got from relatives in germany (i live in US) had a stop at some place in southafrica... i didn't even know they had internet there
- horanghee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They gave me a good idea by telling me not to look up spammer locations.
- r121, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, one of mine ended up in Australia for some reason, and never once came near me...
- foodbar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What kind of work?
- fraynelson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It is a good idea, kinda funny thing, but it ignores lots of IP's locations.
- foodbar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"It only takes the last 4 or so servers and is limited by hostip's ability to provide a lat/long coordinate for the given IP."
- dirtyfratboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Are there any directions on how to get this to work?
- meechp123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you have to cut and paste the email header
if you're using Outlook, select an email message, go to View > Options > cut and paste the header (specified as Internet Header)
- meechp123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you have to cut and paste the email header
- NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I don't understand.
- NewEvolution, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Kind of neat, but only marginally useful. Seeing as nearly all my emails had "unknown IPs" and/or traveled through quite a few servers towards the end of their journeys I didn't get much out of this. I'd be more interested if a) it traced every hop on the email's path and b) I had a particularly long-running piece of chain-mail that had the full headers from its journey. Now THAT would be fun to look at.
- hoofarted, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Nice way to collect active e-mail addresses.
- Brian.Honaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You hit the nail on the head. Anyone who would post their e-mail addy here is asking for spam, and they deserve it.
- dpogni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does this work?
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I really don't see this as being anything special...
- nukethewhales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not working for me.
- CJHtxGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Found supposed location of some spammers; kinda interesting, lol (germany, on some mountain apparently),+digg
- everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0i donno how to get this to work. do i just enter a basic "namegoeshere@somewebsite.com" ? or is there more i need to attach to that address?
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you use something like Gmail (not sure how to do it in Hotmail), you'll need to pick "More Options" then "Show Original". Than copy/paste the parts that say "Received". you don't even need to put the whole e-mail, just the received parts.
- CrookedAsterisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You need to specify full message headers. If you're using something like Hotmail, head over to your settings and under mail display settings, set message headers to full. Then find a message from your inbox and paste the headers in.
- everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0when i do this it gives me a # 1 then the number in my recived feild (10.70.55.20 10.70.55.20) but i dont see any lines or anything.
- plumeria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the idea but right now it seems to at least lack anything outside the states. Whether this is a limit to Google Maps or the tracer, I can't say really.
- Rggoalie3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, I used this on alot of my e-mails and I found that all of the spam in my account it coming through Australia. Even better, they are all coming through a certain server. Now I just need to setup a rule to block it all. Digg++ for cutting down on my spam!
- randomtask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That stupid submission button! It called me a "dolt!"
- filefly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2At least someone else read those Mac history pages. :-) This page could be useful... +digg
- ISEEDEADPEOPLE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hi everfalling
if you right click the message and select properties, then details, cut and paste the delivery lines - snapya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I checked it and it worked fine for me!
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think this is accurate as those visual traceroutes.
- dlichteman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hotmail emails look cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Grimmeh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Didn't work for me - this is possibly just there to collect peoples email addresses...
- docsnavely, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No Work, No DIGG
- lala, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1didn't work for me either
- foodbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Works for me, and I only pasted a couple of "received" lines like it says.
- decta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this does not really work at all
tested it and 1 ip got the right country the other was about 600km away... - Shikkyn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Useful only twice a year.
- MedicineMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is an intriguing proof of concept, notwithstanding the IP database clearly being incomplete.
* The site correctly pegged an e-mail as being from Redmond, which e-mail was in response to my having signed up for a free trial evaluation of Office.
* The site pegged an e-mail as being from Kansas City when the gal who sent it in fact resides in Japan, though not without notes detailing the several unrecognized IPs.
*The Google e-mail header information moreover included data showing time zones, proving the e-mail clearly passed over the International Date Line, etc.
* I appreciated learning the process via which complete e-mail header information is available at least for Gmail, even while admitting to being baffled regarding finding any way to get past Yahoo Mail's palace guard.
* The site seemed to hang a few times, though the problem may rather have been my impatience, for when it was allowed to "run in the background", the first of the two above-referenced results was duplicated.

- afrazkhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Aaaaha ... no. I'm fairly sure that my friend in London didn't send me his mail from Poland, and my servera few miles away (still in London), isn't in Nottingham.
On the plus side, I noticed a place in Nottingham called Gotham which I'll have to visit now. - runnerup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like the disclaimer: "Do NOT use this for any purpose"
- MedicineMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg, meet DIG.
E-mail tracking is indeed one technical subject, as per the (quite lengthy)

Interestingly, the above links to information on "DIG" (Domain Information Groper) "a flexible command line tool which can be used to gather information from...Domain Name System servers" http://www.expita.com/header2.html#dig
DIG, you have been dugg! - EricB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be nice if Europe had some good anti spam laws. It appears that is where everything comes from.
- JayBachatero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digged it. Can be very useful.
- Xopl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Somebody needs to do this for traceroute ... in realtime ... via Google Maps ... dot dot dot ...
- foodbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.google.com/search?q=google+map+traceroute it's been done
- ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1uhhhh visual traceroutes have been around at least since 99 or 2000 ... and they weren't put out by Google ...
- mutt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1is it just me, or does this page look strange in firefox?
my resolution is 1280x1024 - dncnyoyo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Put your cell phone number here _____________and watch your minutes used go up by telemarketers. Read the top title-bar. Is it really worth the trace on google map to give out email headers?
*****This web site is not responsible for advertised content. ***********- carthis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can you even read?
"Paste an email with full headers (we need the 'Received' lines -- we don't need your email addresses, digg)."
OH GOD THEY HAVE MY ISP'S MAIL SERVER WE'RE DOOMED. Read, comprehend, post.
- carthis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can you even read?
- CrazyForSW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I followed the instructions of some other user, and got three different IPs. Didn't display anything on the actual map though, any help?
- yobkeeg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I couldn't get a thing! I wonder is it is some kind of thing that spammers used to lure people into giving them their e-mail ip/address so that they can send you more *****!
- lostgirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It shows my server, which is located in Virginia, in Japan
- SuperJason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone should post a great set of headers for this. I don't have any where I'm at right now. That way we get a great demo.
I suppose you could also fake some headers and make some interesting drawings. - 1821, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.iwebtool.com/tools/
- Bikerbobby100, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just paid a PI at emailrevealer.com to get me the name and address of a guy from his email address.
Does this thing do it for free?
