- jmarkgraf, on 11/20/2008, -6/+388Cutting edge Ajax, and millions of $ of R and D, only to go back to a monochrome terminal. Awesome.
- duckyinc, on 11/20/2008, -51/+2The terminal theme costed probably below 10$ for them to make, the gmail team aren't stupid enough to waste money on stupid themes.
- 7aji, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2they aren't, but YOU are
- megamod, on 11/20/2008, -0/+62are you kidding me? just think of the stealth capabilities of this at work...
this is more ninja than the ninja theme- TunaFishGangsta, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6I just need to recolor my extensive collection of labels accordingly, run in F11 mode, and it'll look like I'm just working at the ole console. lol
- megamod, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8the only other thing I can think of is that IM windows are white with black text...they sooooo need to fix that
- donkevin, on 11/20/2008, -0/+11@ducky
He meant that it took us millions of $ of RnD to get from a terminal to what Gmail is now. - damien1989, on 11/20/2008, -9/+2@duckyinc : WTF is he on about, $10 to make, OR it cost them nothing cos it's google, they own gmail, they wrote the code, they made the graphics (What little of them there are in this theme)
- Andrwmorph, on 11/20/2008, -0/+22Honestly though its the least usable of the themes.
- HillerMylife, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Which is too bad, because it could be completely usable and lovely. Adium has a theme called h4x0r which, despite the name, is my absolute favorite. Very usable and made me fall in love with monospace typefaces all over again.
http://adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=xtras&xtra_id=43 ... - GoodLuckReigh, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1i like terminal, very Aliens

- JCEEZ, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4not a fan
- RutgerB, on 11/20/2008, -1/+9I already have the Ninja Theme, I honestly don't think it gets any cooler then Ninjas
- RutgerB, on 11/20/2008, -5/+2Ohh, maybe a Chuck Norris theme.
- raymccrae, on 11/20/2008, -5/+3Of course there is, pirates!!!
- aliendisaster, on 11/20/2008, -1/+2(Ninjas > Pirates) < Robots
- dacheetah, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Fear my robotic ninja pirate. (I wish...)
- 7aji, on 11/21/2008, -1/+1Bender??
- Kersh, on 11/20/2008, -6/+2The Better G-Mail 2 add-on for Firefox does a better job at skinning in my opinion.
- Andrwmorph, on 11/20/2008, -1/+9Yeah! All 4 skins are awesome! Especially when they stop working every time gmail updates!
- lenninct, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2if only i could use terminal code instead of clicking all over the page. oh wait.....
- duckyinc, on 11/20/2008, -51/+2The terminal theme costed probably below 10$ for them to make, the gmail team aren't stupid enough to waste money on stupid themes.
- bsou, on 11/20/2008, -7/+81I don't have a themes option under settings
am I missing something?- pr0carbine, on 11/20/2008, -0/+17yeah..I want answers
- dawnraid101, on 11/20/2008, -11/+10042
- RutgerB, on 11/20/2008, -33/+5Why does saying "42" still gets diggs these day? its like the oldest "meme" (if you can call it that) ever
- FlyingSpaghetti, on 11/20/2008, -1/+15^ Silly commenter, don't you realize that complaining about 42 will get you dugg down just as quickly?
- RutgerB, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8I'm Sorry!! I didn't know!
- feshmania, on 11/20/2008, -5/+92If you read, they're doing a slow roll out, so some people will get the feature before others.
- ryleyleckie, on 11/20/2008, -15/+66just had to be a dick with, "if you read" didn't you?
- feshmania, on 11/20/2008, -2/+27actually i read it after i posted that and i was like "man, that sounds like a dick"
what i meant was, "if you haven't seen the article yet..." - Asvetic, on 11/20/2008, -5/+4Google's got the slow roll.
- adamk0310, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2Oh yes, my colleague decided that another guy didn't get his theme update yet because either:
1. He uses Thunderbird and wouldn't benefit as much from an interface enhancement
2. He sucks
The ensuing argument and evaluation of themes took up at least 2-3 man-hours of work today.
- mytealjacket, on 11/20/2008, -16/+6I have them =P
- mytruckhasdents, on 11/20/2008, -2/+9...and i don't, so burried. it's nothing personal, really...
- BaileyCowboy, on 11/20/2008, -12/+8Go to Settings and then choose the Labs tab. Enable any current lab feature and save the changes. Then go back to Settings and you will see the Themes tab.
- lostarchitect, on 11/20/2008, -0/+16incorrect.
- BaileyCowboy, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7My daughters email account didn't have a themes tab. I enabled labs and everything was good to go. This will work for some, but not all apparently.
- TheSnuffster, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Worked for me, although I think that you could try just logging out, clearing your sessions and logging back in again.
- nicmonson, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Thanks Snuffster,
Now on to toying around...
- inajeep, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3You can also switch back and forth between the old/classic look and the new look. That enables that info bar too.
- ryanonfire, on 11/20/2008, -1/+5I still don't have them :(
- eggsovereasy, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4Me either, gmail doesn't like us :(
- chanop, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3I don't even havea google labs tab anymore....wtf
- RutgerB, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3omfgwtf
- dacheetah, on 11/21/2008, -1/+3OMGWTFBBQ
- Andrwmorph, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3They roll out the features slowly. I didn't have it when I first found out but an hour or two later my default theme changed and I got a little message regarding the themes tab. If you're logged in you should see it change.
- jameshartford, on 11/20/2008, -4/+2if you don't have the themes tab, go to settings then change #settings in the url to #settings/themes
- eggsovereasy, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Doesn't work :/
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Yeah, one of my accounts has it already while the other is not yet updated.
- kjcdude, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2As always with GMAIL, it's a rollout. Over a period of a week or two they gradually give it to groups of accounts.
- mrASSMAN, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2I didn't have it yesterday when it was released but I got it today. I went through them all and decided Tree was the best theme. It updates with the current weather and it is quite accurate. Also it looks simply divine.
- tdilworth, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2Fail.
- mnortei, on 11/20/2008, -1/+17http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/spice-up-you ...
- iamamaniac, on 11/20/2008, -2/+20The gmail redesigned theme is very nice.
- damnitdaniel, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4As is the "shiny" one.
I'm using the desk one now, but it's kinda busy... - inajeep, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7Planets is awesome. Great contrast.
- Andrwmorph, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Gmail redesigned is not selectable from gmail's built in themes but instead requires the Better Gmail Firefox extension. Of course due to the theme update inside Gmail it will probably take two weeks or so until the Gmail redesigned skin is available again.
- DanQuist, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Shiny theme is the coolest!
- JesterOZ, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2I'm using Shiny also. Here's hoping they add more soon, just to have some more options.
- damnitdaniel, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4As is the "shiny" one.
- heywilliams, on 11/20/2008, -26/+3Pretty cool stuff. I'm on a Mac and like using themes as much as possible to keep my day more interesting :)
- ninjadave, on 11/20/2008, -1/+26What the hell does that have to do with a Mac?
- Paulorific, on 11/20/2008, -2/+24They think they're special.
- ninjadave, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3I think its just this mouth-breather.
- damien1989, on 11/20/2008, -1/+7wow, and i'm on a windows so i like to select really complicated and 'heavy' gmail teams to crash my comp, WTF does it have to do with being on a mac? *****
- artfiend77, on 11/20/2008, -1/+11Why are you guys being so tough on him? He said he uses the themes to make his days more interesting since he works on a Mac. And we all know how much fun it is working on a Mac, what with all the games and software readily available to them.
- HillerMylife, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4I think he just meant since 90% of OS X apps are not skinnable and look similar to each other.
- ninjadave, on 11/20/2008, -1/+2It's pretty sad if you sit skinning your Windows apps too.
- ninjadave, on 11/20/2008, -1/+26What the hell does that have to do with a Mac?
- zadadka, on 11/20/2008, -1/+31For those without Themes tab, "We'll be rolling out themes to everyone over the next couple of days, so if you don't see them yet, check back soon"
Quote taken from http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/spice-up-you ... - snowblind113, on 11/20/2008, -2/+26bartender, free diggs for everyone
- ifruit, on 11/20/2008, -14/+6I'm signing up for G-mail today, just so I can get the terminal look.
Goodbye Yahoo- sjps220, on 11/20/2008, -0/+24Wow you'll be glad you did. I use my yahoo account only to sign up for stuff basically as a spam decoy.
Gmail is great- Medicamusic, on 11/20/2008, -0/+10Really? I just use another gmail account.
- nardologix, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4why not use:
10minutemail.com
- selrahc, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Whenever I want the terminal look for web browsing I just start up an Elinks session.
- sjps220, on 11/20/2008, -0/+24Wow you'll be glad you did. I use my yahoo account only to sign up for stuff basically as a spam decoy.
- dchurchill, on 11/20/2008, -0/+56I thought I left PINE back in 1994
- digggggggggg, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Well, it sure beats 'mail'. At least you can skip over messages in PINE.
- gothgeek, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5I used to use ELM as well.. wow that brings back memories.. memories of life without SPAM
- Rivetgeek, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5You think that's hardcore?I used to read email straight from the mail logs!!111
- megaton, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5You get spam in Gmail?
Mine sits comfortably in a "Spam" folder which I neither open nor read. - goosman99, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Yay ELM!
- dxgg, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Me, too...although I was fighting and screaming when I did.
- judojon, on 11/20/2008, -0/+11I still use pine
- Octanus, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3The computer science department at my university uses PINE for the most part, one of my profs uses mailx : /
- PlackSlayer, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Whats your problem with pine? it works just fine!
- thealsir, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2There are still some philistines on /. who use PINE. No, I'm serious, look at the comments when you get a chance.
Not saying it's bad or anything...just a...little bit out of date... - Marlon, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2did you *not* see the matrix
- mysn239, on 11/20/2008, -5/+2Spooky
- trpnblies7, on 11/20/2008, -29/+4Only 66 diggs and on the front page?
- suprchunk, on 11/20/2008, -7/+2Only? I say, why any diggs at all? You can go to your own account and try them all, if you have the option yet. I should submit screenshots of all the themes so they can get dugg. How lame.
- Cenobite, on 11/20/2008, -0/+10That's because I dugg it, and I'm God.
- JM0ney, on 11/20/2008, -4/+16Ahh my eyes!
- mnk0, on 11/20/2008, -8/+5I WANT IT!!!!!
- LanceUppercut, on 11/20/2008, -1/+37ninja all the way.
- Recessive, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4The new Christmas song.
- frieddonuts, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Graffiti's pretty awesome too.
- fnnkybutt, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5I chose the ninja theme too... now I can't see my gmail. It keeps hiding behind other open programs.
- minnepinne, on 11/20/2008, -3/+10The green burns my eyes in a good way.
- pumpedvideo, on 11/20/2008, -4/+46Terminal digg coming soon?
- Jeepinator, on 11/20/2008, -4/+3Terminal cancer.
- pooljoe, on 11/20/2008, -15/+6I like themes but...GROSS!!!!! looks awful
- Darkgh0st, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8If you were born after 1980 and don't know what a BBS is, you probably wouldn't get it.
- pooljoe, on 11/20/2008, -3/+6I was born in 1973... year of birth not needed to see UGLY ass monochrome
- prgmctan, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4British *****?
- someology, on 11/20/2008, -1/+5pooljoe is a clueless noob.
- pooljoe, on 11/20/2008, -1/+2Not liking monochrome is clueless?
- Thousand, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Yeah, that's kind of the point.
- Darkgh0st, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8If you were born after 1980 and don't know what a BBS is, you probably wouldn't get it.
- SlipStream89, on 11/20/2008, -5/+4Just changed over
- EatChex89, on 11/20/2008, -3/+40I wish Google would not talk about cool things like this until it's been rolled out to my account.
- Jeepinator, on 11/20/2008, -4/+3It has been applied on my account. Maybe it is determined by the time period in which you first made your account. Mine is one of the very earliest Gmail accounts.
- TinababyK, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Same is with me, it has been applied to mine account as well. Mine account is also very very old.
- Jeepinator, on 11/20/2008, -4/+3It has been applied on my account. Maybe it is determined by the time period in which you first made your account. Mine is one of the very earliest Gmail accounts.
- redstorm986, on 11/20/2008, -0/+13I keep expecting it to start singing "still alive" with that theme.
- Rumsfeltcher, on 11/20/2008, -0/+16Terminal gets tiring fairly fast. I switched to it yesterday and have already changed it.
- lostsymphonies1, on 11/20/2008, -1/+5I'm using cold shower
- zkwarren, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Saosin? Nice!
- lostsymphonies1, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2LOVE saosin....i have been using this user name for ~4-5 years now hahha

- Totz83, on 11/20/2008, -2/+49It's good for about 5 minutes, then the blindness sets in
- tee349, on 11/20/2008, -4/+30Why is there no bacon theme?
- korimickster, on 11/20/2008, -46/+323Kevin - take note.
Digg this if you think Digg should have themes.- RobotLeAwesome, on 11/20/2008, -1/+36Digg also needs a performance bump in the comment section, or at least fix the dancing comment box problem.
- zip000, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4It's funny that I see so many people complaining about it - I hate the damned thing - but I never see any excuses or explanations or fixes.
The only solution I've found is to submit my message half typed, and then finish in the edit window, since that one doesn't dance. - RobotLeAwesome, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8Yeah, seriously? I mean WTF Digg, you can have some sort of mini anti-babyman war and post blogs and *****, but you can't fix the ***** comment box?
- zip000, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4It's funny that I see so many people complaining about it - I hate the damned thing - but I never see any excuses or explanations or fixes.
- lordtyros, on 11/20/2008, -9/+37Digg this if Digg should just work on not being slow as *****.
- netneutrality, on 11/20/2008, -1/+8I would have Dugg this down yesterday as gimmicky but the Gmail themes are actually really nice. I won't go back to the plain old Gmail.
- NDfan0788, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8This is key. It seems like 90% of the time alternate themes just add load time. That being said, a black background "theme" would be nice.
As Maddox says, " Think about it: your monitor is not a piece of paper, no matter how hard you try to make it one. Staring at a white background while you read is like staring at a light bulb (don't believe me? Try turning off the lights next time you use a word processor). Would you stare at a light bulb for hours at a time? Not if you want to keep your vision." - RobotLeAwesome, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Well Google's changes to Gmail actually make it a bit quicker overall (themes aside)
- NDfan0788, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8This is key. It seems like 90% of the time alternate themes just add load time. That being said, a black background "theme" would be nice.
- Pritchard, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Digg this if you think Digg should go Open Source. Then when Digg has glitches that can't be fixed, Kevin can laugh in a glorious "Now *you* know how it feels!" song of pure hatred for humanity.
- ensta2, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2try kigg http://www.codeplex.com/Kigg
- RobotLeAwesome, on 11/20/2008, -1/+36Digg also needs a performance bump in the comment section, or at least fix the dancing comment box problem.
- L0NER, on 11/20/2008, -1/+13telnet ftw!
- damnitdaniel, on 11/20/2008, -1/+65250 emulation FTW!
- snowbeard, on 11/20/2008, -1/+7The thumbnail looks like a bunch of TV screens.
- mistergoomba, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8I thought of iPhone thumbnails at first... how sad
- meghalc, on 11/20/2008, -0/+9I tried the terminal look and some of the emails are unreadable due to high contrast in the white backgrounds.
- Jonzo, on 11/20/2008, -10/+2this is cool but I use my os x mail app instead of the web interface these days
- javip, on 11/20/2008, -1/+5no one cares
- Tikisam, on 11/20/2008, -0/+31It's sad how impatient the internet has made me. Still waiting and I somehow feel like it's truly imperative that I get this enabled.
- jasminelynnnj, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4LMAO Me too! You're not alone! :)
- jumpjet701, on 11/20/2008, -0/+14bummer on the slow roll out.
- smergs, on 11/20/2008, -11/+3I'm not trying to be negative or anything but.. Why is there a picture of this theme on Digg and why is it on the front page? It's not like we don't all have gmail accounts where we can go and see it on our own. A simple story about the themes is all that should have been on digg. Buried.
- askantik, on 11/20/2008, -1/+13You're not trying to be negative or anything... except for the fact that you are.
- dacheetah, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2If you'd read the above comment, you would have seen that a lot of people do not have themes yet, and this will make them drool with anticipation at the idea of having themes.
Also, there are some people out there who do not have a gmail account, and some of these people even have computers with internets, but for some unknown reason are lacking in gmail account havingness. These people cannot just check out the new theme, but may wish to see it, it might make them get a gmail account.
- chadsexingtime, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7I expect the modem whistlening connection sound while my gmail terminal loads.
- petebot, on 11/20/2008, -1/+6Bing bong bing bong bing bong binnnnggggggg kssshhhhshshhhhhhh
- farfromhere, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4Bing bong? Did you hook your modem up through your doorbell?

- ncc74656m, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Already set. You're just too slow.
- MasonZombie, on 11/20/2008, -1/+10Ugh, None of my accounts have Themes yet.
- marcoionox, on 11/20/2008, -2/+4Ninja theme is the best.
- Carrot425, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3I think that premium Gmail accounts are getting these a few days before regular accounts.
- smergs, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7What's a premium Gmail account?
- m0nt3, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2woot, been using this since i saw themes came out!
- etx313, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Nerdtacular!!!
- atdigg, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Bad ass
- askantik, on 11/20/2008, -2/+6Some of these are really nice. I wish Google would make some Windows themes.
- telepheedian, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Yeah, I wish I could make XP match Chrome.
- fjpoblam, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Wonder if they'll proliferate like the banner themes did...
- BaileyCowboy, on 11/20/2008, -2/+4Don't have a themes tab? Try enabling google labs first.
Go to Settings and then choose the Labs tab. Enable any current lab feature and save the changes. Then go back to Settings and you will see the Themes tab.- someology, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4I already have it enabled. Still no themes.
- petebot, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3that's exactly what i did, and it worked.
- ethana2, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4You can get an Ubuntu Ibex DarkRoom iGoogle theme, I wonder if something like that's coming soon for Gmail.
Is this open to third party devs yet? - sandiegodude, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3Eh, I've enabled google labs and I don't have the themes option yet. They said it was going to unroll over a few days, so I'm sure it'll turn up soon (can't wait!) Don't know about doing Monochrome though. that gets a bit rough on the eyes once the wow factor wears off. besides, I spend most of my day staring at 2.6 Kernel CLI anyway :p
- texas85, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Phantasea ftw.
- frantzmail, on 11/20/2008, -1/+592 unread mails
- inajeep, on 11/20/2008, -4/+2I enabled themes by switching to classic and back to new look(upper right corner). When the new came up, I had an info bar telling me about the themes with a link.
Give it a try. - DorkyMore, on 11/20/2008, -11/+6ugly, rate this comment down if you have no taste
- immortalsanchez, on 11/20/2008, -2/+4HA. guess i have no taste. ass
- ChileanGoD, on 11/20/2008, -1/+11That's it, i'm jealous. Google! Update mine already!
- h4sh1sh, on 11/20/2008, -6/+4Is it customizable like a real terminal?
