Want your own Digg Website?
talkingpixels.org — DiggClone is working on reproducing the functionality of Digg.Com so that anyone who wishes to have a Digg style website can run one of their own!!
- 451 diggs
- digg it
- wingus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4***** sweet. I want one
- khaled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks promising.
- Psykus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmm...interesting, but didn't they say the Digg API or something was going to be released in the future? I'm not sure what that would actually allow you to do though.
- AKAImBatman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope they add HTML or some sort of tag support. The inability to inline links and accent speech is driving me batty! (Pun intended.) ;-)
- bash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3good replication, but psykus hit it on the nail: weren't they going to release the digg api?
hopefully though, with diggclone or the API coming out, we could have sites running on diggcode ala slashcode/slashcode. - bash, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1good replication, but psykus hit it on the nail: weren't they going to release the digg api?
hopefully though, with diggclone or the API coming out, we could have sites running on diggcode ala slashdot/slashcode. - bash, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0sorry, double post
- hadiz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I don't think that's such a great idea. Eventually people are going to check a bunch of the top "digg" sites and just steal the content for their favorite. So a breaking news story will only be exclusive to one site for a short time, until all the others grab it.
- BJWisch, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Dupe
http://digg.com/software/Create_your_own_Digg_site_with_Digg_Clone - hitchhacker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Where is the LICENSE? This isn't open source/free software unless the copyright holder provides us with a license to distribute his code.
- onektwenty4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Isn't the fact that many people use digg one of its greatest strengths? if you dilute the user pool and fragment the community you get less quality posts spread out over more sites. Isnt it best to keep em all in the one place and allow a single community to use it?
- pinc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0http://www.digg.com/links/Digg_Clone
- fishhits, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree with u there onektwenty4
- sabster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Um yeah buddy it's the internet licesese's are for pussies.
- knut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone else notice the lack of a license? This should be GPL'd.
- knut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry, I didnt RTFC ("C" stands for Comments)
- disord3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good idea. Soon everyone who has a blog will also have a digg site, and then the internet will be so saturated with redundant crap that no one will go to any of them!
- etchalon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The Digg API should be interesting. I've always loved the idea of decentralized communities.
- case116, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with onektwenty4 as well. The best part about Digg is the fact that many different users submit and many different users digg stories, proving the frontpage stories are worthwhile (most of the time)
- stevepr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not every one is going to have one. Does this really matter. If someone likes the format let them have it. They wont have the traffic and fan base so who really cares. It really can be anything worse than having the top stories on your site via RSS.
- stevepr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0basiclly who cares!
- stuffedstich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its not about trying to copy digg so digg is worthless, but for people to EXPAND onto what digg already provides!
Like i downloaded this, and im working on a few different thigns for it. - antisocial, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg is about technology, I would love to see a clone named Pigg...all about Pr0n! in other words, this format can be used for other subjects that interest other groups...
- IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0that's kinda gay, I don't think it's a good thing for the digg community
- opticsnake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the idea behind this. People can set up their own site allowing bookmarking about subjects that relate to their individual interests. Digg.com is great but its primary focus is tech news. What about a site for veterans where you could link to veteran-related news or, as I am about to do, one that focuses on interests for a particular university such as local concerts, where the best beer is, local activities, etc.
- charleyramm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My thoughts exactly. I am just working on a site in this mode for norwich (the city in england.)
- MorpheoZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Exactly... other subjects and/or languages...
is engadget.com worried because there's a new blog every second? - velkymx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or how about a digg about your mom... seriously, very cool.
- MorpheoZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Lame...
- cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the lack of tags was intentional. Otherwise it would be abused and cluttered.
- JustinPM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't believe this will be a bad thing, if anything it will be a cleansing. If people are really concerned with this being a tech only site, the distribution of it's API will allow those that are looking for digg to be a "what to do while at work" time waster, they'll get their own separate community.
- Greattastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'd like to see a music/mp3 "digg" :-)
- cjsan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like how it automatically refreshes and the "vote" thing doesn't have an animation.
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0C10n3d!!!!
- raano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They should call it "OpenDigg". This would be useful for someone who already has an established website, but wants to add Digg type functionality to enhance what they already have to offer. It might behoove the owners of Digg (Kevin, et al) to license their code to those who want it. It doesn't hurt to make some extra coin!
I agree that having a bunch of Digg replica's doesn't serve much purpose--that's if Digg releases an API. If Digg goes down, so do all the clones. - ChrisB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As I understand it, API ≠ source code: I imagine the digg API will let you do cool stuff which interfaces with digg but not necessarily create your own site. DiggClone looks promising, but I agree with knut that it should be GPL'ed, and can imagine they might have to change their name if the digg team get upset.
- ArneBab, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Since the clonedigg team asked how to attach a GPL to their code, I wrote a simple guide:
http://draketo.de/english/free-software/light/simple-steps-to-attach-the-gnu-public-license-to-your-project-gpl
-> on Digg: http://digg.com/submit?phase=2&url=http://draketo.de/english/free-software/light/simple-steps-to-attach-the-gnu-public-license-to-your-project-gpl
This should get them going GPL, if they want to make their software free software, that is.
Their text on http://www.talkingpixels.org/diggclone/index.php :
"Some of the comments on there note that there's not really a license associated with this software - honestly, if I knew how to apply a GPL license to it, I would. If you know the simple steps to it, email me or use the contact us form... "
- ArneBab, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Since the clonedigg team asked how to attach a GPL to their code, I wrote a simple guide:
- diggthiscrap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is dugg.com taken?
- slashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2thats cool, I want one
- X_cell_er_8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Is There A Mirror Of This Site Cuz The One At TopIsnt Working?
- zenkenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Having a digg API would be excellent, allowing for mashups like digg + del.ico.us, where I can add links to both simultaneously and such.
- sirchadlington, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The script isnt working for me. Is it working for anyone else?
- modshark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1interesting project
- feigmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1goog
- teledog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg is an internet media revolution in process. It works, that's why people want to clone digg.
- humaneasy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cloning Digg is silly but cloning the Digg idea is not so silly.
Take a look to Blogmemes.com and they sub-sites community.
That is a nice idea where Digg is not putting the money.
And blogmemes.com released their code under GPL. It is called Akarru.
You can see another one with the niche filosophy at www.indiagram.com, based on Scuttle but improved, licensed under GPL, and dedicated to India's news only.
There is a lot of space for ideas and communities, thank God, so we don't need to be stucked with one supplier.
Digg uses Linux and Apache and other Free Software tools and products and the original makers of those products were not affraid of the steal he could make. No one is on his back to see if he did changes to the Apache or its Linux flavour.
Coping a good idea and a well stablished community is not inteligent if the previous idea didn't froze. Maybe you should read again why and how Kevin got this idea. - boiboi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0...funny how people here just talk about API without really knowing what it is. ..the same know-it-alls you see in every other posts on digg.
- TheKidd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wish there were documentation for this
- sherwinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Piece of ***** script doesn't even tell you how to install it.
- christina091, on 12/27/2007, -0/+0I will try this and give my comments then
- silvanov2002, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1drigg-code.org is what im using for www.rap-it-up.net
- sanjidas, on 04/02/2008, -0/+0My own Digg site? {drool}!!! :D
