- netman427, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19It's always good to scan yourself to see where your own holes are..
(Wait - that sounded really bad.)
...so you can see where your security weaknesses are ;)- M4v3rIC, on 10/12/2007, -19/+11I'd like to scan your holes...baby.
- 3v0lution, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5here it is....
http://duggmirror.com/security/Insecure.org_Top_100_Network_Security_Tools_2006_List_Released_ - bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I was surprised not to see nmap on the list.
- 000jr000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Nmap's not on the list because the survey was performed/published by the people responsible for Nmap...
- bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Exactly the reason I'd assumed it would have been on there.
- partialinfinity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5In the past, they explicitly stated that nmap would NOT be on the list because they are the ones publishing the list. Probably still the same today.
Edit: Yup, after finally being able to read the article using the diggmirror, the notice is right at the top: "No votes for the Nmap Security Scanner were counted because the survey was taken on a Nmap mailing list."
- thenorwegian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Fyoder is the man. He did a conference for a Security Seminar we had and I got to pick him up from the airport. Very smart guy, and his Nmap tool is amazing.
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7He's not just the man. He's a god damn hero in the hacker society. His coding is brilliant, as you said about Nmap. I've been waiting for the updated list for a long time, but I feel terrible now for bringing down his site along with the rest of digg...
- SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm glad they've finally released a new list; the previous one was excellent and led me to tons of new tools. My current personal favorites (netcat, ethereal, ettercap, dsniff, kismet) all made the top 25 and I'm looking forward to trying some new ones like Nikto & Hydra.
- 11familyguy11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@SDNick - Nikto is awesome, I don't know if there's a windows port though. Anyway, i've been downloading every one of these (free at least) to burn to a DVD along with a ton of other freeware for a nice tool set.
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Been there done that
- RegisteredUser, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1Insecure.org sounds like an emo site.
That is all. Carry on.- CypherXero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10RegisteredUser sounds like a dumbass user.
- usinfosec, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wikto = Nikto for windows
- newAccount, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0heh don't forget what sort of "hacker" fyodor really is! http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=FYODOR+SDEM
- Ziron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Who cares as long as he can write some good code and compile a nice list of security tools.
- r0gu3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have been visiting this site for years. This is a great site.
- DJDrastic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Wow, I never new Ethereal Had to be Renamed ! Does anybody know why this exactly happened ?
- gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3it was posted here on digg not too long ago so you can search for it :)
- gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Couple of HUGE things missing for the list:
#1 use your brain
#2 education/awareness
Without #1 and #2 above all the rest are mostly useless. You can have the most secure system on the planet, but if someone falls for planted USB thumb drives, social engineering, or putting their usernames and passwords on sticky notes on their monitor they are all of little to no value.- TylerDurden0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1#1 Necessitates another list
- joeanon, on 04/20/2008, -0/+1Yea, focusing on user's lack of security education or simply their personal weaknesses in general is almost always an easy way to get into almost anywhere.
Even the FBI got penetrated with a booty call. It just takes patience and lots of observation and analysis.
I think it's safe to so.. there is no safe network. It appears even encrypted files systems may not be as secure as we thought. SO... the best strategy above all is...don't make enemies and don't use computers to store secrets because they are likely no safer than paper in a locked cabinet.
AT least you can't take the entire cabinet out of the building in your pocket after cloning it to cover your tracks.

netman, you crack me up! :))

http://www.peoplesfurniture.net/- Darksat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah I thought that sounded funny as well.
I think this list is fairly ueless for the average computer user though, its purely for security professionals.
(and some of its expensive)
This is my list of top security tools.
