- dark_helmet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6A friend and i ran a CGI proxy aswell as a PHP proxy on our server. They're resource whores: the cgi proxycontinunaly went to 60% CPU usage whenever anyone visited a decently large page (newgrounds.com for example.) The PHP proxy was slightly better (only using 30-60% usualy) however with the approximatly 60 people we had using it in my school it caused many errors in php. Bandwidth was never an issue for us since our server was running on a 10Mb line as was our school.
Running a real proxy server with software such as ccproxy from http://www.youngzsoft.net/ccproxy/ is alot easier on the server, but a little harder to figure out how to get working if the place you're trying to bypass has port blocking. Where i go to school theres a large number of common service ports unblocked (FTP:21 HTTPS:443 HTTP:filtered on 80, 3389, RDP, PPTP:1723)

- bobertfishbone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I miss the days when people didn't depend on computers to create correct English words and sentences.
- p014k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Amen to that.
- sert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3thats a good lookin blog you got there, visual wise I mean
one of the better wordpress blogs Ive seen - dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just use http://poxy.us.to/ .... fast, free, no ads, etc.. has a cgi proxy for things like myspace, gmail, and etc. also..
- kudos, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1ultimate.
- antihexe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some websites on that list have absolutely nothing to do with proxy's, Many of which I know are illegitamite and ultimately illegal. (One of which I have worked with, I will not disclose which)
But you can see them, they are plain as bread. - brc2003, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1He only covers cgi proxies. Try using a php one: http://guppyfish.co.uk/safe.html
- cutefcuk, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1omg!!!!!!!!!1111111 i do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111 HAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111 those were the days..........
- drgori, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I still use the old buzzsurf guide to setting up your home computer to be your proxy. I just turn on my home computer before heading to work, and I'm set for the day. Plus, I can set one browser (Firefox) to use the proxy, and keep the other (IE) on my work network.
http://www.buzzsurf.com/surfatwork/
Even if you're not familiar with SSH or setting up your browser to use SOCKS (as I wasn't), you can still probably get it going in a half hour. Good luck! - zulugrid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If his list of proxies don't work for you, his method of finding a proxy via Google probably won't either. Most web filtering software blocks not only sites but software. The people who make the software to block proxies aren't dumb enough to not block things like nph-proxy.pl.
And many web hosts don't allow proxies so check your TOS first so you don't lose your hosting. (For those using something a little more quality than myfreehosting.com) - jcharles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another trick to get around them is to use proxies with https like https://flyproxy.com they are less likely to be blocked because they are secure access instead the regular port 80 which most blockers screen for.
- flashmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://proxy.bttfpromo.net works for me everytime.
- desiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Always remember, this isn't safe job wise.
We network admins use technologies to block (Websense, etc), but we also keep logs.
It's very easy to check the logs and see if someone went thru one of these proxies once we know about it or if your manager asks us to check your browsing history. And not only can we see that you went, but where you went thru it.
ROT is encoding, not encryption.
signed - Your Network Admin- dark_helmet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the CGI proxy that was used by a fair amount of my school was never caught, more forced to be shutdown from too many people using it. however when we switched to using non port-80 socks proxies, and PPTP vpns to tunel we got accused of "hacking" but they gave up on their accusations fairly fast.

Your efforts to bypass filters are admirable, however mis-focused...
The Network Admins at your school arent out to just ruin your websurfing and make your life miserable--thats not our job...
Filters and blocks are put in place for a variety of different reasons:
1.) Bandwidth control------Schools are on limited budgets and we cannot allow students to suck up large chunks of our bandwidth doing file trading and watching streaming video.
2.) Because we recieve $$$ Funding from State and Federal agencies----most schools have to comply with "COPA" (Child Online Protection Act) which requires us to block certain categories of websites. If we dont block them---and State/Feds find out--we lose the major source of our funding....
3.) Its the schools job to make sure that when your in school---that you are learning and doing educational things. Our school district installed a new internet filter a few weeks ago and I was astounded at how much of our bandwidth traffic was porn surfing, myspace, tagged, and file trading/streaming video/radio. ......no wonder American school scores are so low .....
- quaffapint, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1If you just go to proxy.org, you'll
always have a nice list of new web proxies to use...:->

Amen :) - elevenwatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Proxy+ running on my PC at home fulfills all (including proxied AIM) web needs - it is free, stable, and can boot up as a service. If you have the option, it is much easier than setting up a cgi proxy.
http://www.proxyplus.cz/ - TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For anyone thinking they can do this at work. Be aware that sysadmins can turn you in, or your HR dept has access to log files and could possibly terminate your employment. I know because I'm a sysadmin and have seen people walked out the door for bypassing security.
- sumrandommember, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ditto. We just had to let someone go last week because of http://digg.com/links/250_working_proxies_for_safe_access_from_work_school
- elevenwatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Which log files? I am using port 123 (NTP) to forward traffic to my PC at home (from work). Unless they are sniffing the traffic and know what they are looking for, or if they have IDS set up (which is not sysadmin territory), it is relatively under the radar.
So, maybe, caveat emptor for those wanting to use port 80. Otherwise, security by obscuity, or set up SSH. - sumrandommember, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@elevenwatt
