The FIVE BEST football(soccer) signings of the summer
caughtoffside.com — Here are five of the best signings in this summer's transfer window.
- 422 diggs
- digg it
- Mengo, on 07/23/2008, -3/+56You mean best English club signings of the summer
- GalacticRerun, on 07/23/2008, -6/+8Yeah, what a dull article.
- Managua8Green, on 07/23/2008, -1/+7I was gonna say the same thing.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 07/23/2008, -2/+3As someone trying to getting into soccer, can someone tell me why there are no trades in soccer?
- hove, on 07/23/2008, -1/+9What is a trade?
- libertao, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4It's more 'rare' than never and its because the buying team can just pay cash to the club/team which is simply easier than finding a comparable trade (same reason we don't still barter for goods and services in day to day exchanges).
- Agger, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Becasue the club, not the league have the players contracted.
Though I'm not (as hove) totally sure what a "trade" in USA sports mean.
And another point... seems only to be English clubs, and the transfer window is still wide open. - greendelta, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1In addition to the reasons mentioned, the player potentially traded back has much more to say on whether he wants to be traded, and there are far more reasons why he won't than in the US.
If two NBA clubs trade players, both the traded players will still be in the NBA and living in the USA, and they'll probably won't be too bothered by it. On the other hand, in European football, it's going to be difficult for example for an Italian club that wants a new hotshot striker from a Russian club, to make one of their Italian players accept going the other way and play in a second-tier league in a country with a different culture. - sgtbutterscotch, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1A trade is when you give one team a player or players from your team in exchange for a player or players from that team. Thanks for all the answers. I can see why it would be hard to make trades with clubs in faraway countries, but I don't see why they don't do it more when the club is in the same league. An example of a trade would be, if one club is in position to make a run for their league's championship, but they lack a quality player in a certain position, they can trade a few of their developing players to another team for a player that fits into their formation.
- AlexClewes, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2it has happened, trades, but really rarely. It's all about hard cash, not players, and contracts and agents can make it all a bit messy, especially with overseas ones.
- Agger, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1@sgtbutterscotchsgtbutterscotch well, you can't trade/buy players in the middle of the season, though you can loan (I'm not 100% sure, but it might be only from the same league system if it's mid-season), though it's fairly unlikely a team would loan out a very good player to a better team as you don't want to get Relegated :)
- whiterice0, on 07/23/2008, -5/+3Hey. Have you all seen the new soccer training techniques? Really exciting stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_Y4siWeuwQ&NR=1 - rmclaughlin, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1This guy doesnt know what he is talking about. Riise is off to Roma
- BClax06, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Caught Offside is really more of an English website.
- tweez, on 07/23/2008, -4/+18I'm looking forward to when Sunderland buy the 4 Tottenham players for about £10m more than they are worth. Deco and Modric look like they will be good signings though.
- kevdotbadger, on 07/23/2008, -0/+32 of them have had medical's today.
- RPackham, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Deco Really??? i was shocked that he was on the list, he is 30, Jo is a better signing. and Valon Behrami going to the Hammers as of today.
- quakken, on 07/23/2008, -53/+10NO.BODY.CARES.
- JakeyG14, on 07/23/2008, -1/+6YOU'RE.A.MORON.
- dOOBiEx213, on 07/23/2008, -3/+2Hehe. I think you missed the parenthesis... it's soccer, the world's official sport, not "American" football what the article's about.
- Hoogs, on 07/23/2008, -46/+10People care about this?
- WTF69, on 07/23/2008, -6/+14Apparently people do practically the entire world cares. Why must we Americans be so selfish and arrogant?
- Pronoiac, on 07/23/2008, -8/+5It's more fun than being selfless and humble.
- Canuck, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4using Americans, selfish and arrogant in the same sentence is repeating yourself.
- BaseballGuyCAA, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Enough to bury the ***** out of you, apparently.
- WTF69, on 07/23/2008, -6/+14Apparently people do practically the entire world cares. Why must we Americans be so selfish and arrogant?
- zombiecarlin, on 07/23/2008, -13/+10What no Sidwell from Chelsea to Aston Villa at 5million? That is the bargain of the summer!
- kevdotbadger, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4He scored an own goal in his first game.
- coldfusion1970, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3I saw him play for Chelsea and he was pants.
- hotlatte, on 07/23/2008, -47/+11Who cares? It's freakin' soccer. What, is one of the Digg editors a soccer fan or something?
This is your typical soccer player's reaction to being touched:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9F81FRXjA7o
Try that in the NFL.- n0t0kayipr0mis3, on 07/23/2008, -5/+6sit on your ass and insult the sport instead of being productive and partaking in it. Soccer (football) is the most commonly played sport in the world. It brings nations together. Soccer is not for pussies, but sorry, it requires intelligence.
- thetanman, on 07/23/2008, -3/+8That was funny, man.
- buckchoris, on 07/23/2008, -5/+2Soccer players are a bunch of queers man jogging all day, crying like wimps when they lose matches.
- ak420, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2You seem to be confusing the italians and portuguese with all soccer players.
- SwedishNinja, on 07/23/2008, -34/+6Don't care.
- d4ftpunk, on 07/23/2008, -3/+11Don't care that you don´t care.
- SwedishNinja, on 07/23/2008, -6/+4I don't care that you don't care that I am not in a state of caring.
- PCloadLetterWTF, on 07/23/2008, -3/+11Not spam, just a list of some more great transfers so far from other european leagues.
http://www.goal.com/en-US/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoI ...- dthebear, on 07/23/2008, -2/+5this list is way better bro
- rmclaughlin, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5goal.com is the best. that was the list i was expecting to see
- mochaman, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3This is a much better article than the one submitted in this post.
- LoganVH, on 07/23/2008, -9/+44Please, take the time to leave a comment saying you don't care. Really gets the point across.
- kidathinnes, on 07/23/2008, -7/+28usually when people "don't care" about something, they ignore it or bury it. You morons, on the other hand, click on the article and tell everybody how you feel. Here's a news flash: nobody cares what you think.
- dorkino, on 07/23/2008, -12/+6Don't care.
- Lucas123, on 07/23/2008, -1/+5LOL
- dorkino, on 07/23/2008, -12/+6Don't care.
- WCL23, on 07/23/2008, -10/+7I can't see the list through all the FAIL clogging up that site.
- banido, on 07/23/2008, -4/+13Deco was a bargain, here in Portugal almost everyone named him the best player of the national squad in practically all matches of the Euro 2008, and not Cristiano Ronaldo as is repeatedly told everywhere else.
- ivosilva, on 07/23/2008, -1/+5I don't know who dugg you down, but I agree with you...
- albi123, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2Ya C. Ronaldo is a ball hog. Deco contributes much more.
- nicc, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2yeah, Quaresma was better than Ronaldo in the Euros and Quaresma barely played!
I got a laugh reading the comments on the linked article regarding Nasri, about how he was so poor at the Euros. um, he played about 15 minutes total and had to be subbed off immediately after he came on in their last group game because another French player decided to be stupid and got a red card.
yet, somehow this is Nasris fault!
- whiterice0, on 07/23/2008, -33/+10Soccer is for little children. Men play football.
- nevetssav, on 07/23/2008, -10/+15Football is for women. Real men play rugby.
- Gloyns, on 07/23/2008, -5/+8get your shoulder pads and tights on, we're going to play football! ;) mens game....haha yeah right.
buried this. caughtoffside is renown for being a sensationalist and unreliable source of information. - FapCommander, on 07/23/2008, -5/+11football is soccer
soccer is just what you yanks call football- GoatMonkey2112, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1Never heard that before.
/s
- GoatMonkey2112, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1Never heard that before.
- Fallenshadow, on 07/23/2008, -9/+3ha! Rugby? bunch of overweight, slow, old men breathlessly holding on to each other until they collapse from exhaustion. Try hockey.
- wellyuk, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3ha! Hockey? Bunch of girls running around a field chasing a tennis ball with sticks. Try bull fighting.
- Fallenshadow, on 07/23/2008, -1/+0Oops, I meant ice hockey not field hockey.
- dsmx, on 07/23/2008, -2/+4Any sport where you wear body armour is for wimps. Rugby your limit of protection is a padded cap now that is a sport for real men.
- Filipp0, on 07/23/2008, -4/+25Holy crap a football story in the front page!
- colto, on 07/23/2008, -4/+1(soccer)
- GoatRoper, on 07/23/2008, -14/+6When clotheslining someone becomes legal in soccer or they plant landmines in secret locations in the field then it may become worth watching.
- dsmx, on 07/23/2008, -0/+6Why not give machine guns for defenders while your at it.
- impiri, on 07/23/2008, -12/+10We went through this last week . . . 7 reasons american's will never care about soccer: http://digg.com/soccer/7_Reasons_Americans_Will_Ne ...
- d4ftpunk, on 07/23/2008, -3/+10Ronaldinho for €21m!
- bigdickensfan, on 07/23/2008, -6/+4more like the only 5 transfers of the summer. damn credit crunch
- Gloyns, on 07/23/2008, -7/+2here here
- thetanman, on 07/23/2008, -19/+7Don't Care.
- feez, on 07/23/2008, -18/+5i think maybe about 5 people on here care about Soccer. it will never take off in the US. there are too many other sports.
- Scoorn, on 07/23/2008, -1/+8You do know that not every digg user is american right? Its also clear more than 5 people care as there are over a 150 diggs for this story.
- lafan313, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4I think you meant "actual" instead of "other".
- warchant, on 07/23/2008, -6/+4best transfer in England...not the best transfer in all of football
- coldfusion1970, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1We invented football, so the headline is correct.
- fazeman9, on 07/23/2008, -4/+10no alves to barcelona!!
- coldfusion1970, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1People rave about him, but i've never seen him dominate a game.
- deadmantalkin, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1this is a compilation of the best english club transfers, though i do think Alves will be fantastic for Barca. for me though, Flamini to Milan was a brilliant piece of business. that it was free made it even better
- lafan313, on 07/23/2008, -13/+4Thank God it clarified (soccer)! I almost clicked the link!
- Futurejunior, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3If you didn't want to read it, why would you bother commenting? Moron
- GoatMonkey2112, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1Probably to piss off the babies who feel the need to justify their favorite sport out of their own insecurity. Have a look at the buried comments.
- GoatMonkey2112, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1Probably to piss off the babies who feel the need to justify their favorite sport out of their own insecurity. Have a look at the buried comments.

- pgrit154, on 07/23/2008, -21/+3There is only room for one Football.... the NFL. All other football is just not as good.
- baxterror, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Then it should be played with the, uh, FOOT!
I love how the same people who say things like "There is only one football...the NFL" are the same people who would never consider a punter or place-kicker a REAL FOOTball player.
- baxterror, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Then it should be played with the, uh, FOOT!
- whiterice0, on 07/23/2008, -17/+8Oh, hey. A story about soccer signings.
So what's the weather supposed to be like tomorrow? - fr0mundacheese, on 07/23/2008, -15/+6How did this get on my computer?? I must've typed in www.digg.eu hmmm...
- Dkan84, on 07/23/2008, -8/+3dugg for football(soccer)....WHY?!
- diecastbeatdown, on 07/23/2008, -1/+8Nasri tops the list for me.. thank you Arsene! ;)
- Scoorn, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2Hopefully well get some silverware this season!
- JakeyG14, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1I hope so too, but letting Hleb go (though we did get like £700k :-| ), Flamini go, Gallas still skipper and NO experienced players may come back to bite us on the ass. I guess I'm still pissed off at Wenger for admitting we're a "selling club".
- nicc, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2as far as the Premier League goes, so far Nasri is one of the top signings so far.
that said, I do fear a little how Modric will adapt to the Premier League game...that and Ramos as his coach! (if Spuds had gotten anyone other than Ramos I would still laugh at them for their ineptness)
here's to hoping Wengers remaining 1 or 2 signings are quality!
GO GUNNERS!
- Scoorn, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2Hopefully well get some silverware this season!
- FeloniusMonkey, on 07/23/2008, -9/+3It's one thing to play soccer. It's another thing to watch it. But to write about it-- come on... Oh no, I'm writing about soccer right now...
(BANG!) ... - dlllb, on 07/23/2008, -1/+8The Digg comments here are full of complete fail. The article was a bit stale and I disagree with all but one of those players... Geovanni to Hull City for free would be well above Deco to Chelsea for £8,000,000 for example. Don't people realise Deco is over-rated?
- PullingTeeth, on 07/23/2008, -2/+4They've made a mess at Barcelona.
- SolidSnake24, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2which is being sorted, they taught Hibernian a lesson yesterday.
- ArchangelZLT, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1How about Dinho joining Milan?
- JakeyG14, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2EPL teams only mate, but, yeah, I hope Ronnie shines again even if he is in boring ol' Italy.
- frasermoo, on 07/24/2008, -0/+0BuckTooth needs to pull his socks up. He could well be a huge lemon for Milan, evident moreso in taking number 80. what a tool, just take a standard number.
- JakeyG14, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2EPL teams only mate, but, yeah, I hope Ronnie shines again even if he is in boring ol' Italy.
- 137Scene, on 07/23/2008, -2/+5I think this may be premature... Deals are still going on to the best of my knowledge.
Having said that... Come on Spurs!- baxterror, on 07/23/2008, -1/+0Come on you Spurs, indeed.
In fact, we should throw Gomes onto this list as well.
- baxterror, on 07/23/2008, -1/+0Come on you Spurs, indeed.
- gfox, on 07/23/2008, -1/+5I'm most excited about seeing Crouch play regular football at Pompey
- frasermoo, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1and Wright Philips. what a classic pairing... if he joins.
- legendxx, on 07/23/2008, -2/+7Top 1 sign that Digg is losing it's American base? This story.
- Internazionale, on 07/23/2008, -2/+4Lets get serious here
Mourinho to Inter was the most significant thing to happen so far
Sure he's not a player but the best damn coach out there, next to Lippi of course :) - kevdotbadger, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4I'm surprised that this thread hasn't turned into a 'football' vs 'soccer' argument like the article yesterday...
- dmalban, on 07/23/2008, -3/+0Hopefully Robinho to Chelsea will join that list..
- RioMo, on 07/23/2008, -10/+6Brilliant mate, soccer SUCKS!
- pudds, on 07/23/2008, -9/+5Soccer blows.
- zigardne, on 07/23/2008, -8/+1buried for calling soccer football :)
- bigsteve3OOO, on 07/23/2008, -7/+0I hope that Pele signs with that manferd mans earth untied. I love this sport. cant name one team or player. cuz soc-girl sucks and I am not ghey
- kidathinnes, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2haha bigsteve3000 is the "gheyest" id I've ever seen.
- loconet, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3No alves to Barca, No ronaldinho no Milan, wtf is this article talking about?
- baxterror, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4All of you jackasses upset about a soccer/football story getting dugg need to get over yourselves. This is NOT just a website for the US - remember? WORLD Wide Web?
The Barclay's Premier League is the single most watched league in the world - more than the NFL, NBA, MLB or any other. There are over a billion Premier League fans worldwide, and many of us here in the States need to respect that fact.
As for the whole football/soccer thing - Americans play soccer, and that's why we suck at it. The rest of the world plays football, and kicks our ass at it. FOOTBALL is an incredible sport combing endurance, speed, agility, skill, and strength. SOCCER is not. SOCCER is why a majority Americans hate FOOTBALL.
People who complain about diving in the sport should watch people take a charge in basketball - it's the basically the same thing. One big difference being that pro NBA players don't run 10K in a game (that's 6.2 miles for the globally-challenged). Oh, and that's without timeouts, substitutions, or huddles.
And one signing that was missed - Giovani dos Santos from Barca to Tottenham. A 19 year-old phenom...
-END OF RANT- - coldfusion1970, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Hes jumped the gun.
Surely Berbatov will be on that list when he makes the move to United in the next couple of weeks. - Kelmon, on 07/24/2008, -2/+2Tell you what, when the transfer window closes, then you can post articles like this. Until then you don't have the whole picture and much bigger things could have happened. For all we know, by the time the window closes Ronaldo could be wearing a Real Madrid shirt, and that's something that should make this list.
Buried as inaccurate. - Kelmon, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1Tell you what, when the transfer window closes, then you can post articles like this. Buried as inaccurate. - hove, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1@sgtbutterscotchsgtbutterscotch Because of the international nature of football clubs don't like to sell players to other teams the their own leagues because they are the clubs that they are in direct competition with. Football is played all over the world so they have the option to sell to other leagues which many american sports teams do not have.
Browsing Digg on your phone just got easier with our enhancements to the
