either way, truly classic- davidrools, on 06/24/2008, -0/+16i once got a yellow card for trying to get the ball while the keeper was trying to drop kick it. this keep just left it on the floor..probably a pattern the goal scorer here picked up on earlier in the game.

- AmericanGunner, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3You are not offside if the ball is played to you, voluntarily or involuntarily, by the other team.
I.E. if a player on the other team is the last person to touch the ball before you youre not offside
- AmericanGunner, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3You are not offside if the ball is played to you, voluntarily or involuntarily, by the other team.
- rathofbuns, on 06/24/2008, -13/+3Good question! I hadn't thought about that...
- computerusr, on 06/25/2008, -1/+2You fail.
- Mnementh2230, on 06/24/2008, -2/+17He wasn't offsides - you are offsides of fewer than two defenders (usually 1 guy and the keeper) stand between you and the goal when a pass is kicked by your team. No pass was kicked, he just outright stole that ball. I need to try that at my next game.
- ScottMitchell, on 06/24/2008, -2/+16Technically, he WAS offsides, but the penalty isn't called unless a forward pass is made to an offside player who, at the time of the pass, is on the offensive half of the field. At least that's what I remember back from when I was an AYSO soccer ref.
- brownn7, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1- and the pass has to be made by a member of the same team. And it's Offside, hate to bust your balls, it irks me as a USSF ref.
- jsherlock, on 06/25/2008, -0/+4this man is correct
- infinitejones, on 06/24/2008, -2/+22Hate to be the English pedant but the word is offside. No s on the end.
- terracottapai, on 06/25/2008, -5/+1We Americans are used to our football rule, which is called offsides.

- brettmurf, on 06/25/2008, -6/+25Since we are in the mood of correcting people.
OFFSIDE not offsideS. - drakethegreat, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1Ya he wasn't offsides but I thought players had to leave the box when the goalie had the ball. I'm confused because he just hides behind the goalie and I would imagine if that was not illegal then people would do that all the time and of course you never see players doing that. If you don't have to leave the box then I guess the joke is on all the other players for not figuring this out.
- NoEasyWayOut, on 06/24/2008, -1/+57No... only if someone passes it to him while he is offsides.

- killbert24, on 06/24/2008, -13/+4Soccer players should do this more often. Seems like an easy way to score.
- dnes, on 06/24/2008, -0/+9It's too rare to do more often really. Normally keepers will know their surroundings before they roll it out to their feet.
- blackinthmiddle, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5Or if not that, someone on their team would give them the head's up that someone's behind them.

FOOTBALL is what you could call American football because you only ever touch the ball with one foot.
Nuff said.. I'm OUT!
- theImmodiumGuy, on 06/24/2008, -38/+123The reason the player scored is that when he went near the keeper, the keeper forgot to fall down and hold his leg like he'd been shot so the ref would call a foul.
- noahhoward, on 06/24/2008, -2/+57This doesn't look like the Italian league though.
- Anubis2051, on 06/24/2008, -61/+8I think he was referring to the fact that soccer players are the biggest pussys in the world. that and the fact that. Soccer Sucks, it's sooo boring, not to mention that every time one of the players gets barely they fall on the ground like they were just shot, begging for their free kick. NFL, MLB, and NHL players get hit all the time and you very rarely see any of them bitching about it. Theres not even much of a mental aspect to it, any idiot can play soccer, at least Baseball and Football(mostly the QB, but still more then soccer) require some kind of thinking to play ("90% of the game is half mental"). Any baseball or football player could kick a soccer ball, but I would like to see a soccer player hit a 95mph fast ball, catch a fly ball, turn a double play or catch a football on the run, I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of them couldn't . Hell ESPN even ranked every sport by difficulty, and guess what? Soccer finished AFTER Football and Baseball. See for yourself: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/sportSkills
I'd much rather watch The Super Bowl, World Series or Stanley Cup then the World Cup or the Euro any day of the week.
now if more stuff like this happened, it might be worth watching...- Leit89, on 06/24/2008, -4/+31Apparently you miss the entire point of soccer. Soccer is very simple to play which is what makes it so fun. Oh and can you bend the ball around the wall of players on a free kick and place it perfectly in the upper 90 so the goalie can only watch it go by? Didn't think so.
Oh and the rest of the world also disagrees with you. - piffboy, on 06/24/2008, -3/+30the thing about the contact sports you have mentioned is that they wear pads. I play contact hockey and have played soccer as well. I can tell you that i would rather take a slapshot to the inside of my leg, really the worst possible except neck or groin than getting elbowed in the face or kicked bare shin by a guy with thighs as thick as any nfl runningback. and i would also like to see your football and baseball players get a set piece past any european goalie. and of course the ESPN would suck all of the big league american sports dicks. maybe you should ask a sports reporting agency besides the one in a country dominated by every other sport in the world than soccer. i mean do you really expect them to be objective in a country where ***** nascar gets better ratings than the stanley cup?
- CedEx, on 06/24/2008, -1/+18Rugby players don't wear pads, and they get hit all the time without rolling around on the ground.
- LordoftheLoo, on 06/24/2008, -2/+9umm have you ever seen soccer at this level (im not talking about the ***** MLS league)?
If you ever watch the players like Cristiano Ronaldo or Ronaldiniho with their crazy ballhandling skills, then you'll know how skilled soccer players are and how challenging it is to put yourself in a position to compete with any soccer player.
P.S. Soccer players act alot, get over it. Football players do it some times too (i.e. Willie Mcginest vs the Indy colts, when he pretended to get injured so the team could rest, then came out and stopped Edge James at the goal line to win the game. He then celebrated by running the length of the field). - hhmmm, on 06/24/2008, -1/+16"but I would like to see a soccer player hit a 95mph fast ball, catch a fly ball, turn a double play or catch a football on the run, I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of them couldn't ."
Of course they couldn't you idiot. They play soccer and are damn good at it, and to bash them because they may not be good at other sports is completely asinine. - marshallflora, on 06/24/2008, -4/+9yes and baseball is very exciting to watch
yes and basketball players don't embellish to get fouls
yes and football is a thinking sport where players runs are mapped out for them
yes and ESPN's sport difficulty rankings are as credible as the Bible - noahhoward, on 06/25/2008, -1/+4Hit your shin bone as hard as you can with a 2x4... then get back to us.
- dlllb, on 06/25/2008, -1/+2You spend your teenage years training for a particular sport to the level where you sign a professional contract and hone your skills in aforementioned particular sport and you'll no doubt be able to do things in that sport that Average Joe cannot. Welcome to logic.

- estvir, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1Pussies? Hah, someone has never actually played a real game of soccer.
- Last week our forward broke his leg in 2 spots going for a goal against their keeper.
- The week before at state titles a friend of mine who was in defence broke 3 ribs in a fierce tackle. Also, our primary goal keeper dislocated his knee and needs surgery.
- When I was a KID one of my teammates broke his hand.

And so on. Don't judge soccer by the World Cup and the like. I'd like to see a baseball player pull off the tricks a soccer player can with his whole body (Minus hands, of course).
I'm good at soccer, quite good actually, but guess what? I suck at basketball. I have a friend who is awesome at basketball but he sucks at soccer? Interesting.. well, not really. I've seen him do some impressive things and he's seen me do impressive things but neither of us would be able to do what the other did without a decent amount of time playing that sport.
As far rugby, well, I'm Australian and I've played it a fair bit in my years but I'd say I've received worse injuries in soccer. Rugby is crazy though, especially on the occasions we'd play it in high school -- we actually weren't allowed to without a teacher's supervision.

- OffPiste, on 06/24/2008, -69/+5A pretty good analogy to how Obama beat Clinton, sneaky and while legal, VERY underhanded.
- MacEnvy, on 06/24/2008, -3/+28How many McCain points did you get for that one? Hope you rack up enough to buy some ointment, because you're going to be pretty butthurt in November.
- OffPiste, on 06/25/2008, -3/+1No. I don't think McCain has any chance to win the general. I'm looking forward to pushing for impeachment starting Jan-09. The ass raping that will occur under a racist Obama administration will turn most Americans so far against the Dimmo-rats so if impeachment doesn't work, the 2010 mid term elections will make the landslide of 94 look like a trickle.

- galvo, on 06/24/2008, -27/+17The fact that it says "soccer" and not "football" leads me to believe that the submitter of the digg has no idea what a sick goal looks like.
That was one of the weakest goals I've ever seen.. Mallack's game-winning free kick on the other hand... http://youtube.com/watch?v=WflCPHtzoOA

- Yakovzoya, on 06/24/2008, -0/+13The point wasn't that it was such a beautiful goal, it's that it was a sneaky one. Thus the word "sneakiest" at the top of this page.

- AEdgett77, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2no he was not passed to...
- kanabiis, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6Not off the keeper on a throw in, actually not off any player on a thrown in....... some would argue its an obscure rule, but any coach worth his salt insures his strikers know it, any offensive player worth his salt should always be on the lookout to take advantage of the rule.
If you receive the ball directly on a throw in, goal kick or corner kick then off sides rule does not apply. Technically the moment the keeper dropped the ball outside of his box it was a throw in negating any offsides rule as the striker just became the receiver of the throw in the moment the ball touched the ground and he was the first player to make contact with it.
Why this 'professional' goal keeper let this slip his mind I have no idea, although it has happened this isn't the first video I have seen of the tactic.
What the keeper should have done was either a) retreat back to the box and dropped the ball to kick into the field of play, had the striker followed him into the box he would have drawn a penalty, OR b) the goal keeper should have just drop kicked the ball into the field of play, the opponent would have never had an opportunity to make a play on the ball AND would have been in jeopardy of an immediate offsides trap.
/former goal keeper.
//never had anyone pull this on me.
///had a good coach.- biggiantmat, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1The fact that he was the first player to make contact with it is irrelevant, the goalkeeper could have kicked it around first, it makes no difference. A player is only penalised for being offside if he is passed to by someone on his own team while in an offside position. This guy just stole the ball from someone on the other team.
- kudaleo, on 06/25/2008, -1/+1Wrong. Offside rule apply even if you got the ball from the other team. The only exception is when it came from goal kick or corner kick.
- biggiantmat, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1No, you are wrong. I can't believe I'm even arguing with this. If you steal the ball, it doesn't matter if you are offside or not, look it up.

- Lancer010, on 06/24/2008, -5/+7Wouldn't the second pass be offsides?
- ScottMitchell, on 06/24/2008, -2/+16Nope. An offsides penalty is only called if the pass is a FORWARD pass to a player who is in an offside position. But you can pass BACKWARDS to an offside player and it's perfectly legit. It's hard to tell from the angle of the video, but the second pass looks like a backwards pass.
- majmera, on 06/24/2008, -6/+2Probably not because the ball was already past the last defender. The pass started past the last defender.
- amdahlj, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1Scott is wrong and being dugg, majmera is right and being buried. It isn't offsides if the ball is already past the last defender, forwards or not!

Get a life.- anonymous1986, on 06/24/2008, -1/+1Math and Maths are the same thing, both are a contraction of the word Mathematics. However there is no word called "offsides" in football, no human uses that word to describe the rule, the only acceptable term is offside. Furthermore you cared enough to comment on my comment. I would advise you to reconsider your own sub-normal life before telling others to.
- JointVenture, on 06/24/2008, -2/+1Furthermore, dont take DIGG so seriously.
*****. - anonymous1986, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Well I will refrain from insulting a prepubescent kid who seems to have issues with his life as it might lead you to turning into an emo in later life. Judging by your comments on digg i just need to repeat my self and say to take a look at your life again.
