- fxu1989, on 04/10/2008, -2/+9A game that truly takes skill to be good.
- FreddieD, on 04/10/2008, -1/+15Those goals were truly fantastic. On the flip side, for us goalkeepers, here is a compilation of the top 20 saves.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy6q9onewi4- Husky217, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2#2 was amazing! It seems like whoever put these lists together picks their fave player for #1. In both vids, #2 was better than #1. Roberto Carlos's free kick (#5) is the best goal I've ever seen.
- DesertDude, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1I was a goalkeeper when I was younger. One of the most nerve-wracking positions in any sport. The fate of the team is in your hands, literally. I couldn't handle it.
- DesertDude, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Number 42, Owairan, hah. He's from my home country. I remember the hysteria over that goal here, since SA sucks big time playing international tournaments. Guys dancing in the streets, waving the flag of Owairan's football club, congested traffic, it was insane. That's why many of us pray our country never wins a single game in World Cup matches.
- meatmcguffin, on 04/10/2008, -1/+6*****! That was liquid football!
- NightcrawlerX, on 04/10/2008, -9/+67No wonder it is the most played sport in the world.
- mwrl, on 04/10/2008, -26/+2It is the most played because it is the cheapest sport in the world. Just kick something around. It is a little bit fun to play but boring as hell to watch.
- vptel, on 04/10/2008, -3/+14no wonder it's called FOOTBALL NOT SOCCER!!!!!!!!
- DesertDude, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3You have no idea how it feels to score one of those goals. I played a little football in school as a kid. The cheering, the intensity, you dribble and maneuver, then you score a goal, an explosion of screams and applauds almost deafens, and that was kid's football. You can imagine the feeling of doing it in front of tens of thousands of people at the World Cup. You'd feel like a f*ckin' superhero or something.
- jeffclark, on 04/10/2008, -61/+8Yeah, yeah we all love soccer and whatnot... but seriously:

- Twelve-60, on 04/10/2008, -2/+18I think anyone would rather watch commercials then watching grass grow? However I'd prefer the soccer game myself.

- lennybird, on 04/10/2008, -2/+23You know, when I was a stereotypical american, I said soccer sucked, too. I then turned 12 (-maddox), and actually went out and played it. Now in a league, loving every minute of it. Soccer > Baseball... Paintball, idk. I'd say equal.

- overkilpro, on 04/10/2008, -4/+35I will never understand why it isn't called football over here...
- wellyuk, on 04/10/2008, -13/+6Because American Football is far more popular over there.
- overkilpro, on 04/10/2008, -2/+29strange that it's called football though when in American Football you mostly use your hands...
- wellyuk, on 04/10/2008, -6/+10It's not really strange. While it is widely believed that the word football, or "foot ball", originated in reference to the action of a foot kicking a ball, this may be a false etymology. An alternative explanation has it that the word originally referred to a variety of games in medieval Europe, which were played on foot. These sports were usually played by peasants, as opposed to the horse-riding sports more often enjoyed by aristocrats. This explanation is supported by the fact that the word football has always implied a wide variety of games played on foot, not just those that revolved around kicking a ball.
- EarlOfLade, on 04/10/2008, -1/+10It's name should have been:
American Armpitoval - ExiL3, on 04/10/2008, -1/+8So Wellyuk: what has this to do with American football? There wasn't any America in the midieval ages... you really think they stuck with the name just because some pesants played by foot hundreds of years before American football ever existed????
...please explain
- wellyuk, on 04/10/2008, -13/+6Because American Football is far more popular over there.
- wellyuk, on 04/10/2008, -23/+9Yawn.. yawn... plenty of people outside the US call it soccer. Does it really matter?
- vptel, on 04/10/2008, -1/+11Depends, does is matter what we call u wellyuk? or should i just say *****

Dont you mean Soccer, filthy- fxu1989, on 04/10/2008, -3/+9Call it handball

- SolidSamus, on 04/10/2008, -2/+7For what it's worth i'm a filthy yank. I call it football...granted I also call our football football....
- jeebus16, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2You stupid bastard, the english were the first people to use the term "soccer" and the only reason we still call it that is because of all the immigrants we took from your country years ago while in turn adopting their lingo for the sport. Read a book sometime.
- mcm020, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1I call it soccer, but I have enormous respect for the sport and the athletes who play it. I guess you just can't wrap your tiny little mind around people who think different than yourself?
- overkilpro, on 04/10/2008, -4/+35I will never understand why it isn't called football over here...
- staffell, on 04/10/2008, -27/+3No way am I sitting through 50 goals. Knock it down to 10 and maybe.
- Nitrodist88, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5Fast forward?
- topgun553, on 04/10/2008, -5/+9With all the crappy football videos out there, at least this one has some amazing displays of skill.
- mwrl, on 04/10/2008, -19/+1there is skill in soccer? I have never seen any skill in soccer. How hard is it to kick a ball, really. It is a sport for children.
- demps, on 04/10/2008, -0/+13That is quite possibly one of the most idiotic comments I have read on Digg.
- JusticeFriend, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2o rly?
- wellyuk, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3Then I'll assume you've never seen a professional football/soccer match.
- MtheoryX, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2So, hitting a small ball with a large stick, then jogging for 90 feet takes more skill than football? Interesting.
- DtownXpander, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Football/Soccer takes quite a bit of skill... but don't downplay baseball. Baseball also requires a large amount of skill and intelligence.
- MidgardMurda, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3As much as I perfer American Football to THe real Football...your comment is ***** dumb...I watched the whole video and I was ***** impressed.
- mwrl, on 04/10/2008, -19/+1there is skill in soccer? I have never seen any skill in soccer. How hard is it to kick a ball, really. It is a sport for children.

Seriously, calling it "soccer" only plays to the one country in the world that hates it.- wellyuk, on 04/10/2008, -11/+13No, plenty of other countries call it soccer. I've heard numerous commentators on BBC call it soccer. Does it REALLY matter what it's called?
"The term soccer originated in England, first appearing in the 1880s as a slang abbreviation of association football, often credited to former England captain, Charles Wreford-Brown."- Nayson, on 04/10/2008, -4/+6That is completely true. Its from when the rules were drawn up and Rugby Football and Association Football split.
Rugby Football was often called Rugger.
Association Football was often called Soccer.
It is NOT an Americanism.- mggs, on 04/10/2008, -3/+4In fact, "soccer" is just short for "association"
- Agger, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1Most know it's not Americanism. But many may feel (myself included) that Soccer is a term used by those to don't really like it
- mahdaeng, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1@Agger:
I love soccer!
- mahdaeng, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1And besides, Americans don't hate it. They just love other sports more.
- Nayson, on 04/10/2008, -4/+6That is completely true. Its from when the rules were drawn up and Rugby Football and Association Football split.
- Gndoab, on 04/10/2008, -6/+9but if the submitter is American, where it's called soccer, why would he call it football?
Noun 1. football gamefootball game - any of various games played with a ball (round or oval) in which two teams try to kick or carry or propel the ball into each other's goal - mcm020, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1I did not start getting into soccer until a few years ago and I have a lot of respect for the game and the athletes who play it. Now, this is an American website, with an American submitter (with obvious poor taste in music). Deal with it.
- DesertDude, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1It's football, not soccer. The feet are used to kick the ball. That's the whole game. How much time is spent in American football kicking the ball (i.e. using the feet)? The first kick and that's it?
- wellyuk, on 04/10/2008, -11/+13No, plenty of other countries call it soccer. I've heard numerous commentators on BBC call it soccer. Does it REALLY matter what it's called?

- ide1337myself, on 04/10/2008, -12/+14English people made up the word soccer in the 1880's, so I don't see why they bitch about it so much.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_for_association ...- wellyuk, on 04/10/2008, -6/+4It gives us the opportunity to feel smug and better than you yanks. It's pathetic really. Soccer, football.. who gives a *****. It doesn't matter.
- SupaFurry, on 04/10/2008, -5/+2Agreed: Soccer is a nickname for "Association Football" - the official name for the sport known commonly as "football".
- JohnP, on 04/10/2008, -1/+9There wouldnt be an issue if you guys called american football american football, but as it stands there is a conflict in names, and as soccer football came first and is MUCH bigger it makes sense that soccer is the assumed reference when someone just states 'football'...
Its pretty obvious.- wellyuk, on 04/10/2008, -4/+1It's only called "American Football" outside America. In America, it's called Football. Why would they call it American Football? In Australia, Aussie Rules Football is called Football, not Aussie Rules Football. Likewise in Canada.
They all know what they mean when they call their variant of football - football. We know what we mean when we call our variant of football - football. We also know what is meant when it's called soccer. It's really NOT that big of a deal.- javip, on 04/11/2008, -2/+1actually.. i've never heard anyone refer to Aussie Rules Football as football.. we call it footy.

FIFA mean Fédération Internationale de Football Association or International Federation of Association Football- ide1337myself, on 04/10/2008, -10/+6 The name is association footbal not footballl. It was hortened to assoc then to soccer in the 1880's in England. Americans did not make up the name soccer and were not the first ones to use it.

- bicyclethief, on 04/10/2008, -2/+17Loved Cantona's reaction.
- gadgetuk, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3That Cantona goal would have been a lot higher up the list if I'd compiled it - and that's from a Liverpool fan. Class is class.
Having said that, where was Riise's belter against Manyoo?- vptel, on 04/10/2008, -0/+6oohhh ahh cantona
- Po0py, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4He always had that arogance about him. He stands still during games as if to say, "I'm ***** great, non?"
He was a great footballer though. Can't take that away from him. - mradules, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1That is the single most memorable goal celebration. It's as if to say, of "course I scored" and "I am a superhero" all in one pose. Man he is a legend.

- pathouston22, on 04/10/2008, -29/+3I like how people say soccer/football is great because of stuff like this.
Why dosn't the video show the other 89:50 minutes of the game? BORING.
/played soccer for 10 years
//won't watch it, boring- Anonymouz, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Try supporting a team, footys can get boring if you don't support a team and are watching a game in a dud league. Watch something like the UEFA Champions League, World Cup etc and pick a team to support, preferably a team who play the style of footy u like. Footys a whole different game when you actually support a team.
- andrewa, on 04/11/2008, -2/+0I'm glad you know that a game is ~90:00 long, however you've probably never watched a game in your life; at least a game in one of the top European or South American leagues. Keep your ignorance to yourself and stop being a troll.
- Ferneaux, on 04/10/2008, -16/+222.5 minutes worth of goals??? Do we really need a "Top 50"?
I could probably (and that is stretching it) watch 22 minutes worth of "bloopers", but damn.... maybe when I'm bored I'll watch through it all. - blinkatron, on 04/10/2008, -5/+33This video would have been a lot more enjoyable WITHOUT U2
- Peko, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2Not to mention we are reminded of Lenny Kravitz's startling fail of rhyming creativity.

- thelock65, on 04/10/2008, -6/+13Anyone else think the #1 goal shouldn't be #1?
- apio, on 04/10/2008, -1/+2probably not :)
- matt3454, on 04/10/2008, -1/+4Number 1 is right, that goal by Maradona, in the context of the game was probably the best ever.
One thing i dont agree on is that Ibrahimovic goal being number 2. Ild rather Giggs' goal be number as im sure Ibrahimovic's goal was in the league against standard oppostition, whereas Giggs' was the semi final of the FA Cup, deep in to extra time, against Arsenal who i think were the league champions the year before. - verynegative, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2Its all about context. Argentina vs England (big time rivals) in a world cup after the malvinas war. And the goal is awesome.
- Nayson, on 04/10/2008, -2/+6Diego is a cheating bastard though.
He should have been sent off two minutes earlier, and the England team still couldnt believe that the "hand of god" goal stood. He scored against a shell shocked team. It wasnt the best goal ever.- JusticeFriend, on 04/10/2008, -1/+7Still hurts, no?
Greets from Argentina. ;-)- andrewa, on 04/11/2008, -2/+0Not really, but cheating and bragging about being a cheat kinda make him less of a player for me. That and him looking like the michelin man and shown stuffing himself with several slices of pizza at a Boca Jrs Game kinda tarnish the memory of his abilities. Mind you, Gascoigne has a lot to answer for too...
- Anonymouz, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2Hahahah.
+1 Digg Made me laff.
2002 World Cup still hurt(1-0)?
Greets from England ;-)
- JusticeFriend, on 04/10/2008, -1/+7Still hurts, no?
- JusticeFriend, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2No
- Po0py, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2It was great in the context that he scored it against an English side that was widely tipped as favourates to win the world cup that year and had arguably the best defenders in the world. And he just ripped them to shreads. His other goal in that game was not great at all. No. Not great at all. But thats another story.
I can't say it would be easy to pick a number one but Maradona's is certainly a contender.
- jerrycan, on 04/10/2008, -3/+6My god I read that as "Top 50 Soccer Girls." HALT ALL FAPPING. RETURN TO BASE.. It's a trap?

- geinitz, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1couldn't agree more, they weren't really the high energy kind of songs you would want to get amped up to while watching some kick ass goals
- mradules, on 04/11/2008, -1/+0Listening to Lenny whine "yeah, yeah, yeah" is just painful. I muted it pretty quickly.
- DtownXpander, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1Gah! I agree. Why so much Lenny Kravitz?

- mannyqui, on 04/10/2008, -8/+5Boooo we've all seen better goals than that last maradona goal, pff......
- gadgetuk, on 04/10/2008, -1/+4Sometimes there's a context that needs to be taken into account. That goal was in the same game as the "hand of god" incident and was between England and Argentina only a few years after the Falklands War. If it lifted the Argentinians as much as it flattened me it must be worth it's place.
- F1lo, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Exactamente.

- MyDiggIsBig, on 04/10/2008, -1/+4i like ronaldo's over maradona. but maradona's goal has gained so much greatness status throughout the years that it will always be number 1.
- Soave, on 04/10/2008, -1/+2What was so great about the #1? I was far more impressed by a lot of the others.
- wellyuk, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3He took the ball from within his own half, around half the England team and finished in fine style.
- verynegative, on 04/10/2008, -1/+3and they won the world cup.
- JusticeFriend, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2In the time of this match, Argentina was in war against England and this add some "extra rivalry".
And a beautiful goal too.

- BN2L, on 04/10/2008, -8/+6What the rest of the world really wants to know is, why all the ridiculous padding? American 'footballers' are the fat wimps of sport.
- digitalpencil, on 04/10/2008, -5/+6TBF, at least they don't cry like bitches every time they trip over their shoelaces.
- TheDiceMan, on 04/10/2008, -4/+14buahahahaha - American Football is Rugby for the metrosexuals.
I always did wonder why all the padding. Maybe they bruise like peaches. Bless - Gndoab, on 04/10/2008, -5/+5It cut's down on injuries...
What would be the point of the sport if by the third game in the season everyone on the team was injured?
With or without pads, getting hit by a 300 pound man running at you full force hurts.

- jeremyfohferemy, on 04/10/2008, -12/+1more like top 50 ***** goalies
- Niubai, on 04/10/2008, -5/+6Zidane and Ronaldo = Best players in the last 10, 15 years. If both were playing at Real Madrid at the peek of their careers , it would have being the midfield + attack of the dreams.
- elDud3rino, on 04/10/2008, -4/+2GOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL-lodododood------some amazing goals, none by Gerrard though, he's the master of wonder goals.
- NineKnuckles, on 04/10/2008, -3/+2My thoughts exactly, tho I'm just biased =D
- yfph, on 04/10/2008, -1/+3No Baggio from Italia '90?
- ajfullerton, on 04/10/2008, -0/+11Some nice goals, but missing a few. The guy who compiled it seems to favor individual efforts rather than team goals, ie the brazil team effort should be much higher than 22.
Others to consider (after this was made):
Cambiasso - http://youtube.com/watch?v=6R_iYLca2gc
Gerrard - http://youtube.com/watch?v=aWlsWbPhS3M

- mgrest, on 04/10/2008, -0/+8It would interesting to find out who the guy is that put this compilation together. Mr prediction is that he's an approx 35 year old guy from the UK. Some of the goals that were included in this from the English league (Premiership and Division One) are not the usual candidates that appear in stuff like this.
Good to see that he knows his football; some goals from some names that are not that well known outside of the UK; Dalian Atkinson, Trevor Sinclair, Matt Le Tissier, Tony Yeboah.
Also, I think all of these goals are from 2001 or earlier...so an old (but good) compilation.- apio, on 04/10/2008, -1/+3if you like football, you know le tissier
no matter where you live- mradules, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Unless you're younger, from outside the UK, and haven't bothered to learn about footie history apart from the World Cup. Which, I would guess, accounts for a lot of young fans in North America.
- metapop, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2i was quite pleased to see le tissier as well. i'm also quite sure he's an arsenal supporter due to the abundance of arse goals and that the only spurs goal was number 50 and by glenn hoddle, although it was a cracker.
- apio, on 04/10/2008, -1/+3if you like football, you know le tissier
- DistantBL, on 04/10/2008, -0/+10where's Leo Messi?

nice video though.- Po0py, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2I was just thinking that after seeing the Maradonna goal. He's a classy footballer.
- loconet, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Thank you for bringing this up. Messi's goal was pure class.
- TripleAStacked, on 04/10/2008, -1/+12That #10 Robert Carlos needs to be in Top 5. That shot was physically impossible to make..Click on the Youtube link below to see the mathematical explanation .....Other than that great video. I love Okocha !!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwRYYeEk5Eg- BlackOp, on 04/10/2008, -9/+1It was a ***** cross and that video is full of *****. He hit it with the outside of his foot instead of the instep by accident. I can't believe that goal even got in the video.
- Hrag, on 04/10/2008, -1/+2***** cross? No way. Who would cross a ball that hard? it would end up in the stands, man.
- pgouy, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2F***ing awesome!
- Po0py, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2Aye, that was a cross and a poor one at that. Still amazing to see, though. I'm not surprised it bent in the air the way it did. I've bent a ball in the air many times from a volley. If you hit it just right at a ninty degree angle, with the outside of your foot to give it a little bit a spin for good measure then it will make it bend a little.
His other dead ball free kick was better, imho. He bent that ***** further than I've ever seen anyone do it. Here it is:

Check out the slo mo replay.- meromasta, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2Yeah. The confederations cup goal he scored was a thing of beauty. Granted this goal was awesome, but it was accidental. But a goal is a goal is goal. And by the way.. the goalie F&*ked up there. he shouldve been protecting his near post.
- BlackOp, on 04/10/2008, -9/+1It was a ***** cross and that video is full of *****. He hit it with the outside of his foot instead of the instep by accident. I can't believe that goal even got in the video.
- Gm7Cadd9, on 04/10/2008, -13/+2I didn't know there were 50 goals scored in the history of the sport. We need more hockey love on digg.
- ExiL3, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1...you made me laugh,
NOOOT

- tombstoned, on 04/10/2008, -3/+11No Pele?
- Peko, on 04/10/2008, -1/+2Here's my "this goal wasn't in there?!?" 2 cents... It was Rivaldo, I think the '96 or 2000 world cup. Standing on the edge of the box, he chested a pass, kneed it and turned and kicked it, all as a juggle, in traffic. Maybe it was context since I was into the game, but that goal sticks out in my mind.
- jotuN, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4i think seedorf's rocket from near the half way line should be higher
- quiznos, on 04/10/2008, -0/+21The music was terrible.
