20 must-see Greasemonkey Addons (No Technical Knowledge Required)
makeuseof.com — Couple of month back I have covered Greasemonkey, a powerful and all-favorite firefox extension. Now I am taking it further and want to present some of the coolest addons (scripts) out there letting you do such crazy things as: downloading clips from popular video sites, adding mirror links to digg listings, integrating google reader with gmail...
- 1663 diggs
- digg it
- citsym, on 10/12/2007, -91/+15Nice. I dont use Firefox, but I would try them out on Opera. Opera allows userjs (equivalent to greasemonkey but said to be more powerfull) out of the box, and it generally works with most greasemonkey script.
- keitarofujiwara, on 10/12/2007, -9/+91Well... this is for Firefox... *uncomfortable silence*
- esengulov, on 10/12/2007, -13/+14thanks for tip, I had no idea there was something like this for Opera folks
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11yeah, it's a less convenient in Opera but works largely the same. To use it, right click on the page, select "Edit site preferences...", and go to the Scripting tab
- Mootabolife, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8I like Opera, but Firefox's page rendering tends to have less glitches.
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -58/+2well they said "no technical knowledge required" - they werent kidding, since firefox is barely more secure than IE. Opera is where it's at
zinger! - kevin45, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18^ whatever. FUD.
- Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -27/+13I don't see why you guys are burying the guys talking about Opera. They're just talking about it. They're not even bashing Firefox.
The userbase on digg has really gone downhill lately. - AbstractEgo, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1@Haroldx: Why Is That?
- hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6@Haroldx
Lately? if by lately you mean day 1 I'd have to agree. - KillerJ59J, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Haroldx: How can you say ImTheDarkcyde isn't bashing Firefox? I only buried him. I have room for opinions, I do not have room for stupid fanboys that bash their competition.
- dave98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16not true in my experiences... actually, I'd say about 80% of the greasemonkey scripts I used in Firefox do not work in Opera
- Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I was referring to citsym and Mootabolife.
You guys probably haven't noticed this but ever since I've joined digg (early 2006), digg's idiotic population has boomed. It's the idea of being cute and getting your comment dugg up that keeps them going.
The amount of diggs to a comment should be shown after you've dugg up or down the comments so other people don't jump on the bandwagon and digg down because other people have. - phantom_mullet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How about a greasemonkey script to get rid of Snap?...good lord that's irritating...
- trypeewee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@phantom_mullet
How to Disable Those Incredibly Annoying ‘Snap’ Previews ★
You know those stupid “here’s a thumbnail preview of the site this link points to” things that are suddenly appearing on a bunch of web sites when you hover the mouse over a link? They’re from a company called Snap, and the second question in their FAQ gives you a way to set a cookie to turn them off.
http://www.snap.com/about/spa_faq.php?disable_spa=1#2
(via DaringFireball: http://daringfireball.net/linked/2007/january#sun-28-snap_disable ) - citsym, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ TenebrousX : That would only enable userjs for that specific page. You need to go to Pref-->Advanced-->Content-->Js Options and enter your userjs folder. Thats all you need to do.
- dmsean, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Digg is for all the idiots that couldn't get good karma at /.
:P
-zing (Yah I know that includes me :P) - yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Firefox fanboy comments under article about Opera are automatically dugg up.
Opera fanboy comments under article about Firefox are dugg DOWN!
- Kebert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Really enjoying the clean Gmail and the Linkify
- elk1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3worth checking out for this error page on userscripts
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/6198... - DarkSunlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Remove the dots... like this:
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/6198
- elk1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3worth checking out for this error page on userscripts
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Google Reader + Gmail is extremely convenient.
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Someone apparently has a digg down issue, ***** troll, but anyway... this should be added to the list:
Digg comment enhancer
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/7714 - dreamlayers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The fact that it allows easily adding cliches concerns me. That's almost like making it easy to spam Digg.
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I simply thought it was a neat toy, it's fun to see what this extension can do. I personally find it pointless, which is why I refer to it as a 'toy'.
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Someone apparently has a digg down issue, ***** troll, but anyway... this should be added to the list:
- kevin45, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4I wish there was one that blocked lame digg blog submissions.
- ChrisGranger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I believe there is one based on keywords in the title of articles.
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7i like the one that disables myspace music unless you ask it to show up. It makes that site borderline usable.
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/3299- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24is there one that blocks myspace?
/sarcasm - mrsteveman1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Stick a line in hosts pointing the myspace domains at localhost :D
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24is there one that blocks myspace?
- pikpikcarrotmon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Groovy.
- Doonce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I recently got Greasemonkey too, and one that I don't know how i lived without is Google Auto-pager. (search userscripts for autopager) It is a script that auto-loads the next page in Google below where you are now, so you never have to click next. I also love the Gmail Reply + Forward buttons at the top of the email. Great scripts on that page too. Love the linkify and textarea save.
- mjar81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Great article. I installed many of these.
- mendigg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0The author of clause has mentioned and has opened excellent and a vital topic presently. Clause is written interestingly and the main thing actual. The same theme on Russian sites: http://pivo.in.ua http://www.alcogol.kiev.ua

my favorite grease monkey script- cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why are people digging him down? This greasemonkey script is much better than some of the scripts in the article. Thank you for sharing.
- SirGrok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Lightbox is the most useful script that you can install for greasemonkey. It gets in the way on some sites (flickr, I turn it off when using flickr), but it makes browsing images (including pr0n) SO much better.
Install it and you won't regret. - lobbster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2that is a nice script, its so much easier to look at porn now. thnx buddy
- binaryspiral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Greasemonkey has become a standard install for many of my coworkers - we work with a lot of web apps, and being able to script repetitive stuff saves us a ton of time. Great article - a few of these I wasn't aware of. Digged! [sic]
- tchansen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We use it at work as well. One of our third party vendors wants ten thousand dollars to license the API for interconnect purposes. I used Greasemonkey and a couple of hours of code and test to do the little bit that I would have used an API for.
- johnny222, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://www.jonmega.com/iceman/stuff/fonts/
Link for font Lucida Grande for Super Clean Gmail addon, as well as other OSX fonts - Gzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Youtube -> Google Video one was the best, IMO. The video size is the thing that annoys me the most about Youtube.
- acdcfanbill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've used that digg mirrors greasemonkey script for a while, it's quite kickass.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@gzero - google video is pretty nice, they seem to use a higher bitrate for their videos.
- EricJD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Awesome! I didn't know any of these existed. They're very handy!
- purple, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I like the one that removes all unnecessary exclamation marks.

It's an old story, so I'm not trying to get it to the front page. - thinkycap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3On a semi-unrelated note, and I have posted this in about every forum I can think of...seriously.
Is there anyway to alphabetize your list of greasemonkey scripts? Without reinstalling them in alphabetical order.
I'd be eternally grateful if anyone could help. - Me1on, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I made a script a while back that turns swear words into asterisks (*) similar to Digg's profanity filter. I don't think that most people here would use that sort of thing, but you can easily edit it into whatever your sick minds can think of. :)
Here it is: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/2300
Also here's a pretty cool scipt (not made by me) that makes all web pages "talk like a pirate": http://greasemonkey.makedatamakesense.com/browse_like_a_pirate/ - dreamlayers, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I've looked at Greasemonkey many times and I've always concluded that it's too much trouble and not worth it. I've never seen a script which made me think "I've *got* to get that!!!". I guess if there was no CustomizeGoogle or AdBlock I might care.
- itsscience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i like the facebook colorizer
- deinspanjer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GM is wonderfully useful. I made a user script / extension that adds a little floating translucent "digg this" control to any page opened by a digg summary link. That way I can zip through the front pages opening articles I think might be interesting in background tabs and then digg them after reading without having to find them.
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/7883 - jaywee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0perfect art!! i really enjoy many of the script!
