Do I need the processes running on my PC?
processlibrary.com — This freeware has all the answers... download, scan and get all the details in one page! bye bye ugly task manager. Never seen anything like it.

- digg it
- Doozee, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8This is great! Comprehensive info on all the processes running at any given time on one's computer.
- darkzealot89, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28Why are so many major web-serves ill-equipped to handle massive spikes? I look to a utopia where all web servers can survive the dreaded digg effect.
- ElliotShoe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11They need to make this a standalone program. I'd use it to check for spyware and to decide which startup items to remove. Sometimes a computer is so owned , its network is totally whack.

- NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is definantly somethign i should check out for my work laptop... even with all the adware checkers I got... thing still has extra junk running...
I hear Process Guard is a good way to just plane kill and lock out any process that you dont like... - savmac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Coming soon! Spyware... YES!!!!
- cwalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wait, so you are telling me I don't need picture.exe running in the background?
- speaker219, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is what firefox users get when the process scanner sends results to the server (i guess the program tells firefox to open the results in new tabs, and then firefox does a google search for the word) Real nice job setting that up :/

- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I used it. Seems pretty fast and harmless. Gave me some useful info on my processes.
- usherzx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+59yeah, here's what I got.
ProcessScanner is getting the results...
Status: Failed to send scan results to the server - V1be, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I'm getting the same failed message. It's because the servers that it's communicating with are down, from digg.
- usherzx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Well in that case I have bad news for everyone, lol
It gave me that error when the story only had 20 diggs. - Ramtech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19It doesn't work on Vista....
- ufia, on 10/12/2007, -22/+9ROFL the software tried to send your running processes info to the server. Pwned!
- MicroBerto, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Mine failed too. I'm assuming that it's because I'm so anal about what processes run, I've shut down one that it needs to run this app. Which, ironically, I must not need because my system is running fine.
Just google for Windows Services Tweaks or something along that effect and you'll see a great list of services in the service manager that you don't need.
I disable more than I probably should -- but if I ever have a problem, I can always bring them back. - dougm68, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It created a process for itself and has required me to end task on it to stop it.
Thanks for the tool? - kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yes and it was sent successfully, however, it sends you to a page for results and THAT wont load, so im takin the f5 route for now, if it dont work soon its going to bookmarks!

- Gazthrak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I dugg up Ignignokt01 because you just have to imagine it as if it were being said vocally with real emotion.

of course a comment about a proccess scanner for linux is relevant for this thread. You say that this link is about a windows app, which is true, but its also a link for a process scan app, so how is suggesting a process scan app for linux irrelevant or out of place in this thread?

- westoncampbell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How do you have so few processes at startup? Along with AVG 7.5 Internet Security and the normal processes, I have around 32 processes. First of all I will assume that you don't have any Anti-Virus application installed (and in use) that constantly scans the files considered to be potentially harmful. I'd guess that you just use some sort of Anti-Virus to just manually scan certain files (or all) when you're not sure about opening them. Well. if that is not the case, I wish you'd let us in on your secret :-)

- mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So, is it spyware?
- aldocs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Hi mutatron,
My name's aldo from the ProcessLibrary team at Uniblue Labs. The during the creation of the process scanner we made sure that no personally identifiable information is extracted from your computer. All that is extracted is the process information which is shown on the results page.
Best Regards,
Aldo - xr56n44, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6"All that is extracted is the process information which is shown on the results page."
The very definition of spyware is something that phones home with information. Just because you say it only takes such and such info doesn't mean that's it's true, and doesn't mean it isn't spyware even if it does.
Splitting hairs between WHAT data it sends is total *****. If process scanner connects to the internet and sends back data, it's spyware.
This app has the stink of death on it... the ways these mofos SPAM digg, the phone-home element, and then the dirtbag from the company defending his sleaze. - kinadian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"If process scanner connects to the internet and sends back data, it's spyware."
I disagree. If it connects to the Internet and sends back data without telling you what it's doing then it's spyware.
If the program and developers freely admit what they are doing (and that's all they are doing) then it isn't spyware. It's just the program doing what it's supposed to do.
If you are not comfortable with that then simply do not install the program. But I don't believe that this is spyware. - skrshawk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@xr56n44
Don't do a Google search then or post on Digg. By your logic you're sending personally identifiable information every time you use your web browser on those sites (and just about every other one on the net, unless you've gone out of your way to mask your identity).
- aldocs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Hi mutatron,

- Pekay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Why send the results to a server. :O
- ohgr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Because they probably have some sort of data base they update, and by sending your process info to them, they can seee what you do need, and what you don't.
- dougm68, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do porn sites use processes? =O

- troubledyouth, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0 I'd use it to check for spyware and to decide which startup items to remove. Sometimes a computer is so owned , its network is totally whack.
http://www.silveradoboysranch.com/ - craziestmule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i waited till 5 in the morning to see if it would be able to send the info to the server, but apparently thousands of other people had the same idea.
- daviddarmanin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8hey guys... just realised this post made the front page... grreat! just contacted the guys at Uniblue Labs and they answered back saying that the reason for failed scans is that the servers are overloaded and that they are now handling 200 scans per minute. They also promised they will be adding another 200 within the coming few hours...
- Dakusan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I ran the sent data (which is obviously in some form of base 64) against a couple of dozen base 64 decode tables and was unable to find anything of use... I have very often used process library for looking up unfamiliar processes on other peoples computers, so I'm sure they SHOULD be trustworthy... but sending across over 500k for 46 running processes when a simple md5 could be taken of each (which it DOES appear to do in the first few packets...), seems kind of iffy....
- aldocs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Hi Dakusan,
My name's aldo from the ProcessLibrary team at Uniblue Labs. The data that is sent in only information about the processes running on your PC when the scan was started. I assure you there is nothing dodgy in the information sent.

That's what I don't understand about the people that believe in Roswell/Area 51, Moon landing faked, 9/11 was an inside job, etc. - They give way too much credit to people in a position of power.
