- airencracken, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29Finally available for Linux and Windows.
- willynilly, on 10/12/2007, -22/+9Why in hell is it called "Handbrake"?
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17@willynilly: maybe because a handbreak is a backup brake...and handbrake backs up dvds...
I am so glad there is a new version, I love this open source tool. Keep up the good work! - schoate09, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1DVDFab FTW!!!!
- thedobber, on 10/12/2007, -38/+0"Also, be sure to choose the VIDEO_TS folder when you browse the DVD, and then select the "title" that contains the actual movie (it's usually the longest one). For Windows users in particular, HandBrake definitely makes easier work of copying DVDs to your iPod, though the overall process still takes a few hours."
Wake me when it actually functional, when I don't have to "guess" and when I can have a movie ripped and encoded in under an hour. Until then I'll continue to use DVDFab, DVD Decrypter and Videora. - Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@thedobbler
wake up when you get yourself a halfway decent processor and a peice of common sense.
Selecting the correct title isn't that hard, and how long it takes to rip is minimally dependant on the software - thedobber, on 10/12/2007, -27/+1Thanks Snake, your insight is appreciated.
Fanboy line form over there. - EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5ADVICE: use the 5.1 audio track as the 2 channel track is almost always director's commentary.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4I still wish there was something that could upconvert a DVD. I want to rip it as 720p. How hard can it be if hardware can do it on the fly, why can't my processor chew on it for a while?
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I used this back when I had a Mac. I sold the Mac because I just didn't like it, but I've yet to find another good dvd ripper that I like. Glad this is multi-platform now.
- gr8one, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Handbrake saved the day for me when I needed to extract some video clips for a multimedia presentation. Based on my previous experiences with attempting to rip DVDs, I envisioned hours of work. I discovered HandBrake and was literally done in half an hour.
- Harrison88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ ebfoxbat
You understand that all an upscaler does is make the resolution of the file bigger? It doesn't improve the quality of the file. It's just like blowing a picture up. - Hydraulix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Not available for Solaris, marked as inaccurate! :)
- abid786, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@mfratt (#6318708) said: "I used this back when I had a Mac. I sold the Mac because I just didn't like it..."
That's why I hesitate to buy a Mac. I don't want to waste a good 1500 dollars only to realize that I hate the OS. - nhprm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1@willynilly I think it's called HandBrake because you use your handbrake to burn out... and it burns out dvds in myriad formats.
p.s. screw saying 'sorry for the comment abuse.' - ChildeRoland420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It doesn't burn DVDs, it rips them.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Harrison88
You understand you are totally wrong right? If all it did was make the resolution of the picture bigger than all upconverters would be the same. The fact is they are not. A good upscaler will in effect anti-alias a scaled up image making it a whole lot better.
My TV will take a 480p (or 480i) and display it at 720p because thats its native resolution. It is simply making the resolution bigger. That's why it looks horrible. While an upconverting DVD player will anti-alias the picture which gets rid of the jaggies.
What I want is software that will take its time and do that. Take my 480p/i upconvert it to 720p, anti-alias it, and de-interlace it (if needed). The result is clearer picture without flickering, color swirl, grains, or noise.
I don't know why you were dugg up but I'm pissed because you are simply wrong. I'm sure I'll be dugg down for flaming you if this is ever read (it's old now) but you are very, very wrong.
- sickswaystop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23dugg for encouragement to post more free downloads
- growlzor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+49Dugg for adding "all platforms" to the title. I hate reading about some amazing new program only to find out its not available for my operating system
- davidrools, on 10/12/2007, -15/+20all platforms my ass...this wont run on my 386 in DOS!
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish they would post Linux x86_64 and Linux PPC binaries...
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5If only it went both ways. Its a Mac program program ported to Linux and WIndows. You rarely see Windows software ported to anything else, seems far too much Windows software is made by ignorant programmers.

- matt5108, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I like it when great programs support all platforms, it makes thing so much simpler. Especially when they are free.
I've noticed free software usually supports much more (PS3, Zune, AppleTV) - kensai111, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thank god, an all platform release finally. I've been envious of the mac only version for quite some time.
- bwana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43If you'd prefer not go to a blog first here is the link to the Handbrake site
http://handbrake.m0k.org/- sooperdooper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Maybe read the blog post? I know this is going to get dugg down, but if I had just followed your link (blogspam BLARGLE) I wouldn't have found out that windows users need DVD43 downloaded first in order to decrypt dvds.

- alphaeno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1dvd shrink is a great dvd back-up program
- antitab, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"DVD Shrink works just as well."
DVD Shrink and Handbrake have completely different focuses. At least make it a valid comparison and say "MeGUI works just as well". Which is true, for the most part.

- 0000hGulag, on 10/12/2007, -21/+0wow another video-raping application. oh, wait, you already mentioned ipod... sound-raping to mp3
- darklord5907, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The only error is between your keyboard and your chair. You. Get your settings right and it might actually turn out good looking, if you don't know how, ask. Don't sit there bashing an application because you suck at ripping DVDs.

Let us know when you've got a multimedia player the size of a deck of cards with a screen that folds out to 20", a 100TB drive, and the ability to play back uncompressed audio and 1080p video. Until then, we'll stick to our more practical solution when we're on the go. - PsychoPNut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@patik... where can i get one of those?
:)
- ozzilee, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4There's a torrent over at the pirate bay that's going faster than the direct download (for me anyway).

- Kratos76, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4seriously, this is the longest I've ever had to wait for a 4mb file. ...waiting... waiting...
- osclinear, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Seriously the best free dvd ripper ive ever used. Im happy for the other platform users who can now finally use this great little peice of software. eerrrrrrOCK!
Ebfoxbat: ADVICE: use the 5.1 audio track as the 2 channel track is almost always director's commentary.
Absolutely - digitallysick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I downloaded the linux version and extracted the file. i got a CLI file? i'm not sure how to install it? I couldn't find any directions on the site either.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=handbrake+cli&btnG=Search - dancandigg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I wanna get this for Windows, but what's the difference between "graphical" and "command line"?
- Paperclip1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Get the graphical one.
Graphical = click on buttons
Command Line = type in commands at a prompt - dancandigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1so now i have an error message at the install that says: "Handbrake can not be installed on systems with .NET Framework version smaller than 2.0." Whazzat?
- dancandigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2nvr mind. :) figured it out.
- zjbird, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1im having that same prob

- keithburgun, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1who the hell has an "ipod" ?
- TheMagicBear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I found this yesterday through GeekBrief.tv
I was getting so desperate I was about to pay for a DVD ripper. Ha! - fuzzbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Did they do something to the encoder for the sake of making it faster that made the image darker?
I just encoded a DVD into MP4 using Handbrake 0.7.1a5 (my old standby) and then did it with this new version, and the picture is significantly darker, and even a bit blurrier using 8. I checked to make sure the settings were identical, and they were.
Anyone else find the same thing? - jdillingham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A damn good piece of software. It makes DVD ripping/re-encoding oh so easy.
- intelsucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am hosting the Windows GUI. Hopefully you'll get be able to get better than 16.7kbps from mkk.org. Right-click, "Save Link As":

- ne0g, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1is it legal (while i don't do this practice) to buy a dvd, rip it, and return it, you ARE giving back everything you bought, you just aren't NOT keeping it (doesn't sound legal)
- allancorbett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No. It's illeagal but it's also highly unlikely you'd ever get caught.
- tepidpond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you can find a store that'll let you purchase and return any number of DVDs ... be sure and let us know.
- dugem1, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1That's great find
