- digg it
- tomi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23note: this is a nightly release
- danglerman, on 10/12/2007, -42/+7i doubt moziila's going to go down...but here is a mirror just in case
http://frank.e.barrett.googlepages.com/firefox-2.0b1.en-US.win32.installer.exe - Tordenflesk, on 10/12/2007, -40/+5Aren't they like already at version 3.0 and called Minefield.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10That's the rawest development version...
I'm currently using it and get such fun things as some text as wingdings and some sites the text doesn't flow anywhere near right.
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/firefox-3.0a1.en-US.win32.installer.exe - Seumas, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22Watch all the idiots rush to download the beta and then bitch about their extensions "breaking".
.... But it's Internet Explorer BETA **THREE**!!
Best post I ever saw. :) - V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5Can't wait for all the Hey My Theme Doesn't Work! posts
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Whoops - the spell checker doesn't recognise the word firefox. :S
- rflint, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Oi. Figures someone would jump the gun and post links to the RCs (which aren't distributed to the rest of our mirror infrastructure) while we're moving ftp.mozilla.org to a new colo facility :/
Please just wait until Tuesday, these are just builds for QA to test and sign off on. They won't automatically update to any subsequent releases and it's still possible that we may respin to take a patch before B1. - mvprj84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have also posted a tweak guide for those people looking to tweak Beta 1
http://digg.com/software/How_To_Tweak_Some_Of_Firefox_2.0_Beta_1_s_New_Features
I thought it would help some people out there.
- danglerman, on 10/12/2007, -42/+7i doubt moziila's going to go down...but here is a mirror just in case
- shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Can we get some screenshots of the new features?
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14theres nothing to see really.
It seems to be quite a bit faster on linux though. - justinjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23I took some screenshots of it:
http://tinyurl.com/jynex
And yes, it's much faster on Linux now. Some other things I noticed were close buttons on tabs, news reader support, and a built in phishing filter.
PS: Sorry for the shamless site plug. - math20, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1You forgot to block out your email address in your shameless siteplug screenshot.
jjnumbware@gmail.com - justinjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1@math20
That's no worry. It's the address I post for contact on the site I so shamelessly plugged. Plus all my mail gets run through two filters, so my inbox stays pretty clean.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14theres nothing to see really.
- postaboy, on 10/12/2007, -21/+5I love Firefox
- jamesey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7any benefits from upgrading from 1.5.0.4?
- galador, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Only if you want to beta-test and submit bugs. If you want a stable release stick with 1.5.0.4.
- Sniper, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Upgrading to this version will kill your extensions (not compatible)
- Sniper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Ok, Download Nightly Tester Tools to make your extensions compatible - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/958/
- timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Well, there are some that will break, even if you force them to load. A good majority will work fine. Some are already even prepped for 2.0, but a good chunk don't.
- seandfeeney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ie tab works with it. not much else does though.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1
Some are already even prepped for 2.0, but a good chunk don't.
There are also a few of the most popular that have been made redundant by inclusion into 2.0. So you may not need some of the incompatible ones anymore. Most of the popular extensions will work anyway.
- d3m3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5There's no new features from alpha 3, just some bug fixes, for some reason the 2.0b1 page hasn't been made yet. Theres alot of new features but it does crash sometimes. Restore session is awesome though.
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/bonecho/releases/2.0a3.html
Plus if you download the nightly it will autoupdate everyday. Very cool.- comrade693, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It hasn't been made because this isn't the official Beta1 - it's just a release candidate for it. This story title is rather inaccurate.
- Ancestor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Correction: there ARE some new features:
- ability to reopen recently closed tabs
- JavaScript 1.7 support
- scrollable tab bar a.k.a tab overflow (better handling of large amounts of tabs) - d3m3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Those were in alpha 3...
- Logiedan, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6A ton, Jamesey. Take a look:
http://mozillalinks.blogspot.com/2006/05/firefox-2-alpha-3-review.html
http://mozillalinks.blogspot.com/2006/05/bon-echo-aka-firefox-2-alpha-2-review.html
It's going to be awesome. Also, dugg. Can't wait for the official beta on Tuesday. - cwalk, on 10/12/2007, -12/+32Hopefully they have fixed the memory leaks.
- dougal1985, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10See the page on Wikipedia for a fairly accurate review of the new features: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox#Version_2.0
The history of recently closed tabs is nice, especially if you accidentally close a tab. Accidentally closing more than one tab is now harder, thanks to each tab having an individual close button. The other neat feature is the search-suggestions as you type, much like Google Suggest or the Yahoo equivalent. A very nice update! - SpookyET, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Beta 1 Release Candidate? It is either Beta or RC, not both.
- d3m3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Its kinda not the official beta 1, but close. I guess...
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I was led to believe that this is a release candidate of a beta
- in4matik, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Indeed... I guess that's what happen when article are written by non-computer geeks =)
- wurzelgummage, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Putting the "tab x" extension functionality into the program is welcome. I expect it was one of those forehead slapping moments for the Firefox guys when they found out about it.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Compact menu Xpi went away. :(
And oh look, auto-spell checking when you type a comment! Pretty sweettttttttt. Now I will sound like slightly less of an idiot then I am.- i440, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0And wouldja look at that! Suggestions appear when you type a search into the box!
Still no Acid2 compliance though. ): - mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Now they need a grammar checker so that you can be... "less of an idiot THAN I am."
Then is used primarily for time, such as I did x then y, or in a list or order of items. If you're comparing two things then you use than. I am much better at x than y. Or in your case, slightly less of an idiot than I am.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0And wouldja look at that! Suggestions appear when you type a search into the box!
- UnderWurlde, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Loads and quits a lot faster on OS X.4.... the alpha versions were painfully slow. Enjoy!
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4I've been using firefox 2 for longer than a month now, what's new about this?
- Seumas, on 10/12/2007, -11/+8Good for you. You know how to download a nightly build. Good job.
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4OK jackass my point is that it's not "now available" it's been available for some time.
- FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I hope it has a good RSS reader... then I can dump Safari. :-D
- FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Oh my Gosh! It does! Yay!
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2you might like the Sage extension. It is the best RSS reader for firefox I have found.
- DCMacHead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Actually, Vienna (available on sourceforge.net) is an excellent RSS reader for Mac. Additionally, the new version of Firefox cleaned up the handling of RSS feeds so you can automatically dump them in your feed reader--I was able to do that with Safari, but it was a cumbersome process with Firefox 1.5x...not anymore with 2.0 :)
- ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I'm using it right now, and it's not very different than 1.5..... WAIT A MINUTE, is it just me or did Digg include some new spell check mechanism in the comments section?
WOW, Looks like there is some sort of spell check built into Firefox 2! Tis cool.
Other than that and an upgraded search bar, most of the changes seem to be in the background. I'll probably have to turn off some of my extensions and Theme and look harder to notice....?
http://mozillalinks.blogspot.com/2006/05/bon-echo-aka-firefox-2-alpha-2-review.html confirms there is a new spell check thingy. Cool. - goat77, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I really like this version. Best firefox yet, hands down. The spellcheck is nice as well.
- nicksource, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I would wait for the final release unless you wish to write about the beta version. Alot of extension do not currently work for this version.
- SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The only difference immediately apparent is the 'X' to close each tab. This doesn't really matter for me though, as I have always used the wheel-click to open and close tabs.
- stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Yeah hopefully by the final release they'll add an option to remove the "X" from every tab. Totally redundant.
- FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4About the X in the tabs... "totally redundant"; I beg to differ. I hate having to run my mouse all the way to the other side of firefox to close a tab, and the x only takes up like... 5 pixels anyways. :-
Especially when closing a bunch of tabs... left right left right left right... gaaa! - weoh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If you don't want to reach for the X at the edge, you can middle mouse click the tab to close it, or LMB and RMB at the same time.
- myfanwy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2even better, the mouse has been made totally redundant - Ctrl F4 closes the current tab, and the mouseless browsing extension let's you navigate links, just about anything you'd want to do in fact, using only the number pad. awesome, this alone makes FF so far ahead of any other browser, let alone the security, etc
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1
Ctrl F4 closes the current tab
Fingers... must... stretch... farther... ctrl... F... 4... oh damn, that was the Windows Key. BSOD. - jk3us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ctrl+W also closes the current tab. Unfortunately, that also switches windows in a split-screen vim session. That's caused me some headaches.
- U8IK, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Careful if you want to test it!
Although it installs itself in a different directory, it screwes your themes and extensions, which become incompatible with your current Firefox installation (although they are).
I have removed 2.0 and reinstalled 1.5.0.4 - with no luck.- Sniper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Like I said above - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/958/
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They are still compatible with your current 1.5 install. Go into your extensions list, right click on them, and go to enable. It just disabled them. Every time you open the beta version it will disable them again. If you are only going to use 1.5 now, get rid of the beta and re-enable your extensions and themes.
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0seems to work well enough for every day use.. then again, when i start to miss my extensions, I'll be sorry.
Whoa spell checking! - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12The FireFox developers deserve a Nobel Prize in English for providing spell check as a standard feature.
- Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Safari and Konqueror have had a native spelling checker for ages. Firefox is playing catch-up with this feature, they certainly shouldn't be winning prizes.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've had this for a long time with the Aspell-fox extension (which just said "Aspellfox" is not a word), but it is great to see it integrated into the browser. On the surface this is good, forcing people to spell correctly, but I am concerned it will make the idiots harder to spot. I guess there will always be the ALL CAPS typing and the copious use of the word "*****" to identify them.
- iodeken, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2cool cant wait to see more features from opera ripped
- Darkdata, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5ZOMG ITS FROM OPERA....
Who cares this is about firefox and not opera. If you don't like it don't click the link.
- Darkdata, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5ZOMG ITS FROM OPERA....
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I bet even with the new spel check feature, people will continue to spell things wrong, and immaturely. (And no comments saying how only 15 year olds do that, because I'm 15 and that's offensive)
- UnderWurlde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It didn't pick up on your "NEW SPEL CHECK" error... Funny!
- FrozenOrb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3So many folk are implying features added in the alpha 3 release are new features to beta 1.
- merdryn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Wait a second ... a release candidate for a BETA? Shouldn't it be: Alpha, Beta, Release Candidate, Final? Like the rest of the Windows world?
- Ancestor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's what it's like with Fx too. That is what happens when morons submit links to internal, nightly, non-public, whatever versions which is exactly what the above version is.
- Hardcase, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Oh thank you lord, Firefox finally work correctly on my Mac Mini!
- GodsHand, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Seems to work well on my MacBook Pro 17" Core Duo. Not as fast as Safari though.
- UnderWurlde, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2After a few hours usage, I can say that it locked up my keyboard three times (had to quit and restart the application); locking up meaning that no keys can be typed. VERY annoying, and hopefully will be fixed by Tuesday because it's unacceptable at this point, as you can imagine......
- Zal91, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Adblock that I made for this build.
http://www.orbitfiles.com/download/id342153628- zachws, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0adblock works for this release on its own (not adblock plus)
- tomi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does anyone get a problem where clicking on a link will sometimes scroll the page to the top? I thought it might be fixed in this release, but it still persists. I didn't see anyone complaining, so I thought it might just be my laptop. It didn't happen in 1.5.0.4.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Feels much more responsive on OSX-Intel. The GUI widgets don't have that annoying non-native delay anymore.
- sbostedor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Poorly wriiten article with no real information about the release. This is nothing that you can't from their website.
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It works very well in OS X PPC under 10.4.7. I noticed that the Flash plugin support is greatly improved and allows for a better viewing experience than the last version of Firefox and even Safari. Flash works very well in this latest release. I can't wait for the final version.
- iNoles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0P.S. Please don't hand the link around as this is only an RC and it isn't replicated out to our mirror infrastructure"? ( http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.dev.planning/msg/eea72b677e41dd22?hl=en& )
- mouthster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3yes....
Digg 3.0 finally scrolls smoothly on my Powerbook now - jamelt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1There is nothing really exciting about firefox 2.0, sorry
- matthartley, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4This is the author. Thanks so much for taking the time to give me a shout out. Yes, Firefox does rock and you should also head over to Blake Ross' blog and give him a huge digital high five for working so hard to make this happen. He sat behind me at Gnomedex 6.0 and is a very cool guy to chat with.
For those who don't know, he is the reason why the browser is where it is today... He is basically, the man behind the browser.- matthartley, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Oops, my bad. Though this was for the OSWeekly bit. That one was mine. (blush)
- matthartley, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Edit-
Oops, my bad. Thought this was for the OSWeekly bit. That one was mine. (blush)
- sherifgmansour, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It took me a while to switch, but I eventually did and dont want to go back. The main reson it took me soo long was that really it came down to one thing - performance. Why would I switch to a browser that took longer to load and wasnt already integrated into my shell (good old microsoft-style)
For me it was really two things:
1) Extensions - this really had a huge part to play with it. After seeing the number of extensions I could get for firefox, I was quite impressed
2) Community - The update of this was really starting to impress me.
2) - iRobie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Greasemonkey still seems to work :) It says it's not compatible, but you can use either the nightly build tools or edit install.rdf. So far it's working for me.
- mikebb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This version rocks and it's noticeable faster on Windows. Impressed ... I may have to order a Firefox Polo Shirt -- Microshaft's IE7 cannot compare to Firefox.
- Archangel621, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Seems noticeably faster on my MacBook Pro...and those nightly build tools are great.
- Soave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Looks nice overall, and I hate to complain about just a beta, but I'm having a little problem... if I middle click and hold, then drag the mouse up and down to try to scroll, it doesn't work. Before, I would get that little circle with the arrows in it and I could scroll faster that way. Anyone else having this problem?
Also, I can't scroll through the tabs using the wheel anymore, but that's not really a problem.- RichSPK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I haven't installed this pre-beta release, but look in the settings for an option to enable autoscroll.
- starseed420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I am using the linux version on 2.0beta1 as we speak . I was surprised to find that almost all my extensions were compatible, including noscript, stumbleupon, and download statusbar .. adblock and a few themes didn't want to load .. I installed the nightly testing tools extension and it does give the option to force load the extensions.. The ui is slightly cleaner , and seems to be a lot faster both rendering and UI .. good job firefox.
- esoteric0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0is it just me, or does the space bar and arrow keys not work to scroll any more? i'm running this on a macbook pro with the nightly tester tools installed to make all my extensions compatible.
- blackrabbit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11337 amount of digs
- creoleplane, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0FF2 is still nowhere near as fast as Opera or anywhere near as functional. Operan 9 destroys anything FF2 will do hands down. Screw FF, it's the noobs browser. If you want a fully customizable UI and a browser that beats anything else in speed and has most of the things FF needs an extension for installed by default and isn't a memory hog go with Opera. If you want the opposite, stick with FF and suffer.
- ataferner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mozilla.org soon to release Alpha 1 of RC2 of Beta1 of Firefox 2.0
- deadeyes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same bugs, same instability....
- wamatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0feels really snappy on OSX now.
Digg is coming to a city (and computer) near you! Check out all the details on our
