8 in greenland - Spuy767, on 05/29/2008, -2/+2What we have to understand, is that even if FF3 breaks this record, it doesn't mean anything because this is a staged record breaking attempt. THe current record holder is likely just a popular piece of software that was downloaded because of a need/want for it rather than a staged internet dick-measuring competition.
- Plastic3D, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1I will break the record on download day because of my Super_Download_Script.exe script, which will download Firefox more times than any of you.

Software decisions should not be made on "passion", they should be made on technical merits and merits alone. There is no need to adovacate for something excellent, it will speak for itself.- nmnnotmyname, on 05/29/2008, -0/+4Open Source is a merit alone. Firefox is one of the best OSS browsers out there, mostly because of the community. (Excellent extensions, websites that pay attention to FF support, etc etc etc.)

- nmnnotmyname, on 06/01/2008, -0/+1That's the point, that's what makes it such a great browser. The community is great.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/05/28/moz_downlo ... - xino, on 05/29/2008, -0/+12Also, I think Firefox already set a record by it being the only browser that had it's logo in a crop circle. Or am I wrong? Too bad the link that the digg post there links too doesn't still work, but the comments show that it did work at one time. Note to self and anyone else that cares, this digg post has 5,417 diggs at the time I posted this.

- Temo1, on 05/29/2008, -0/+0They could easily make the record "most unique users downloading the software in a 24 hour period".
- SubjectiveC, on 05/29/2008, -12/+7Ok, I made the pledge. But, WTF? How come Spain has the most pledges with 972? Tons of Firefox fans from a country who can't even pronounce it, it seems.
- Weejay, on 05/29/2008, -9/+10I suppose you are from the United States of America? I'm asking cause your comment literally reeks of American ethnocentrism (and I might say arrogance).
- SubjectiveC, on 05/29/2008, -2/+10As a matter of fact I'm technically a citizen from a Hispanic nation. The truth of the matter is most Spaniards choose to pronounce anything in English (I don't know about other languages) as if it were regular Spanish, because they're stuck-up about their culture and think making an effort to pronounce things right is beneath them. Talk about arrogance.
- Weejay, on 05/29/2008, -5/+4Come on SubjectiveC, you know better than that..... Spanish is a phonetic language, so it's harder for them (also because of dubbed TV). I currently have a Spanish roommate, he's really trying hard but the association between letters and sounds is carved in his brain now and it's literally an everyday struggle.
Besides, I fail to see why Spain couldn't be #1, are they not cool enough for that? - SubjectiveC, on 05/29/2008, -5/+1Ok, fair enough. But they're leading. I mean, there must be a reason for that other than being the coolest people on Earth.

- talonh, on 05/29/2008, -0/+13I guess worlds smallest is still a world's record, but I'm not sure I'd brag about it
- Owwmykneecap, on 05/29/2008, -7/+2surely each update of Firefox that gets automatically downloaded gets massive d/ls that day...
- HigherLogic, on 05/29/2008, -3/+1You do realize how little the percentage of Firefox users still is when compared to Internet Explorer, no?
- ElBeh, on 05/29/2008, -0/+217% of all web-users use FireFox, that's not bad at all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_web_br ...
- Pixelpaws, on 05/29/2008, -0/+4Actually, that's not going to work. From the website: "What qualifies as an official download of Firefox? A "download" is the transmission of the entire, fully functioning Firefox 3--not an update."
- HigherLogic, on 05/29/2008, -3/+1You do realize how little the percentage of Firefox users still is when compared to Internet Explorer, no?
- HanSolo69, on 05/29/2008, -6/+1If only Guiness records meant anything. Are they even breaking any established record?
- biggerx, on 05/29/2008, -0/+2Who the hell cares. We can set the freaking record if there isn't one yet!

- Jaziek, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1well.. your proably right, but its depressing to think that there are people this stupid. I prefer the wishful thinking that sometimes its intentional.
- celkin, on 05/29/2008, -0/+3If you download a file illegally, you will get arrested and DIE!

- wiresjr, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1You wouldn't steal a car.
You wouldn't steal a handbag.
You wouldn't steal a baby.
You wouldn't shoot a policeman
...and then steal his helmet
...and then go to the toilet in his helmet
...and then mail it to his grieving widow
...and then steal it again!

- keviniskool, on 05/29/2008, -4/+34India only has 4 pledges. In a country with 1/6th of the world's population.
- andrewtheart, on 05/29/2008, -7/+1Yea, that's pretty sad
- bigredgpk, on 05/29/2008, -0/+28It's also only 7am there... check again in 12 hours and see what that number is.
- nmanguy, on 05/29/2008, -10/+1Ummm, I don't think that India has too many computers.
- Trichomonas, on 05/29/2008, -0/+4I hope that was sarcastic...
- TheCheeks, on 05/29/2008, -0/+4They only answer every tech support phone call and email...
- ivantalboys, on 05/29/2008, -1/+1Have you had to use India Tech support? That whole scripting thing is just stalling tactics while they wait their tuyrn on the office PC.
- nmanguy, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1Tech support might have computers, but do they have free time? Not to mention that the rest of the country is in insane poverty.

- ileftfark, on 05/29/2008, -4/+13*****, and I already blew my wad when KB905474 came out on Patch Tuesday.
- tapo, on 05/29/2008, -0/+5you blew your load to the install of...Windows Genuine Advantage?
I mean, a bug fix is cool, but you're ***** up.- ileftfark, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1I'm glad somebody out there was geeky enough to catch that. I was going to sign my comment " - b. g." but that would've been too obvious. And stupid.

- biggerx, on 05/29/2008, -3/+9Oh no! the interw3bz is going to be absolutely flooded with Firefox users. Wait! it already is!
- barnsaton, on 05/29/2008, -0/+7Anyone notice how many pledges Spain has? More than every other country by at least 3x at the time of this post.
- snapuswipe, on 05/29/2008, -2/+5Some people have really brought up this point, but it should be reiterated.
Some programs have likely shattered even the goal of "5 million" in 24 hours. Think of how many computers automatically updated to new IE programs or even World of Warcraft patches. Both of these "require" you to update to continue using the service (although you can get around it with both, with turning off the auto updates for Windows and using private servers for WoW.).
Before trying to set a "world record", we need to see what other programs have topped.
That being said. I'm honestly looking forward to this update and have already made my pledge to download it!- oatmeals, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1Don't know why you're not getting any diggs. Probably the most downloaded is either a porn flick or some microsoft windows patch.
- darlingt, on 05/29/2008, -0/+2Because it's already been stated that, according to Guinness, nobody has applied for this record before. Thus, it doesn't really matter what the actual number is, as the Firefox community is setting the benchmark.
