So if traders go to port cities in foreign lands, that weird mix of the tiny bit of the native language they know + their own language = a pidgin.

I disagree. It's true for jabber, where i can use ICQ to talk to MSN and etc. if the server has all my account info and all. Gaim is just a polyglot. - Baffles, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0tarnic: AIM beats GAIM/Pidgin any day. Even kopete or other programs beat it. GAIM doesn't support direct connect, which is a feature I use heavily. It's also the ugliest looking thing I've ever used (of course, everything from GTK is ugly). And, if AOL sucks so much, why do you use it?
Heh, I'm probably going to get dugg down for this, probably by Linux fanboys, but I don't care. A lot of us believe a name should tell us about the product. Since everyone who uses an IM, knows what "IM" is, then GIM makes perfect sense.
And as much as I love the whole open source community trying to get someone to switch to "Firefox" is made harder because I have to explain what Firefox is, but Internet Explorer says it all.
Consistency:
iPod, iMac, iBook, iPhone, etc. Apple aren't the only ones who drum down the pattern into your throat so you know "i" means its Apple. Rather then have Pidgin, libPurple and Finch, have Pidgin, libpidgin and libpidgin-text. I know the name change is most likely set as "Pidgin" , but I'd like to voice my opinion in support of "GINA" (Gaim Is Not AIM) for the new name, as someone suggested (and 140-some people seconded) on Digg. I think it's just too good to pass up. Great work, by the way: my favorite open-source project is gaim or pidgin or gina or whatever.

GAIM 2.0.0 final is Pidgin. If you read the page you would've seen that they didn't want to (or couldn't) release a new major version under the name GAIM. Until Pidgin is released (any day now) it is still GAIM.
