- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -137/+10Well gaim sucks ass anyway, the name only reinforces it. Let the digging down begin.
- davefin, on 10/12/2007, -8/+319In gaim and now Pidgin, each IM protocol (AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, etc) is taken care of by a prpl (protocol plugin). prpl is pronounced "purple" and that is why libpurple was chosen as the new name for libgaim.
- SlvrEagle23, on 10/12/2007, -6/+113Maybe we'll be able to squeeze a modern, attractive logo out of this name change as well. You would be surprised how many people see the project's now-dated logo and assume it has been unsupported for years because "any modern software would have a cooler logo"...
The new name isn't really that bad, though it just replaces the problem of saying "gaim" out loud and having people think you're talking about a game with the problem of saying "pidgin" out loud and having people think you're talking about a bird. - royall64, on 10/12/2007, -30/+8The submitter acts like it's a good thing.

- knaps, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23A pidgeon is the fusion of two languages between speakers who don't know the others.
So if traders go to port cities in foreign lands, that weird mix of the tiny bit of the native language they know + their own language = a pidgin.
Eventually, some time down the road, when more people use that pidgin as their normal everyday communication, it becomes a Creole.
I'd have rather seen GAIM become Creole. I think it's fun sounding. - yacks, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1"What tastes like purple?"

Backwards it's nigdip? - shawnanigans, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pidgin
A pidgin, or contact language, is the name given to any language created, usually spontaneously, out of two or more languages as a means of communication between speakers of different tongues, and usually a simplified form of one of the languages. Pidgins have simplified grammars and few synonyms, serving as auxiliary contact languages. They are learned as second languages rather than natively.
It makes sense why Gaim is called Pidgin, because Gaim/Pidgin supports multiple protocols. - ArnoldLayne, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"Pidgin" makes logical sense, but it still sounds stupid.

I disagree. It's true for jabber, where i can use ICQ to talk to MSN and etc. if the server has all my account info and all. Gaim is just a polyglot. - Baffles, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0tarnic: AIM beats GAIM/Pidgin any day. Even kopete or other programs beat it. GAIM doesn't support direct connect, which is a feature I use heavily. It's also the ugliest looking thing I've ever used (of course, everything from GTK is ugly). And, if AOL sucks so much, why do you use it?
Heh, I'm probably going to get dugg down for this, probably by Linux fanboys, but I don't care. I support Linux and open source 100%, but Linux is no good for a desktop (it's great for servers, but just doesn't have the hardware support or good programs to make it as a desktop, at least under my usage). - michaelliberty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I vote GIM!
A lot of us believe a name should tell us about the product. Since everyone who uses an IM, knows what "IM" is, then GIM makes perfect sense.
And as much as I love the whole open source community trying to get someone to switch to "Firefox" is made harder because I have to explain what Firefox is, but Internet Explorer says it all.
Consistency:
iPod, iMac, iBook, iPhone, etc. Apple aren't the only ones who drum down the pattern into your throat so you know "i" means its Apple. Rather then have Pidgin, libPurple and Finch, have Pidgin, libpidgin and libpidgin-text. Pidgin Pidgin Pidgin, Pidgin, Pidgin, Pidgin (remember the name yet?). - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so would that make gim-text and libgim
sounds like a plan

Hi Sean,
I know the name change is most likely set as "Pidgin" , but I'd like to voice my opinion in support of "GINA" (Gaim Is Not AIM) for the new name, as someone suggested (and 140-some people seconded) on Digg. I think it's just too good to pass up. Great work, by the way: my favorite open-source project is gaim or pidgin or gina or whatever.
Nelson Blaha - Gunegune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry guys, but it appears GINA is a no go.

- Dolomite, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1GAIM is such a better name, I can't see myself using a program called Pidgin... into the recycle bin you go... been nice knowing you GAIM.
- flyinghippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yeah, I forgot that all Gaim clients were going to be automatically changed, and could not be changed back in any way.
- Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8That's like saying you're not going to buy a Wii because they changed its name from the Revolution.
- teaBagger, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3pidgin is just not right......
- demonstar55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0now we have libpurple and libsexy, what else will we have next?
by the way, recursive-acronyms are better so GINA -- GINA Is Not AIM likes someone else said would be better. - X1NN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'll keep using it, no doubt, it's the best. But I'm having trouble imagining recommending it to my non-tech friends... "Um, got to pidgin.org, you know pid-ginn" Gaim was an easier sell.
- NeoNevermore, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1I was OK with the application being called GAIM...you know exactly what it is and it's to the point. With Pidgin, well, I guess it will take some getting used to. If ANYONE hasn't figured it out so far (and I'm sure there are), the new name sounds a lot like "pigeon". It can be related to messaging, because pigeons were used for carrying messages during WWI and WWII (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_pigeon).
I suppose if everyone has been able to figure this obvious thing out by now, then you don't need my brief explanation, in that case bury me.- kstange, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's not correct. The name was chosen according to the term explained here:

- ShyGuy91284, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Time to pull out the search-and-rename script so the next time I download the "pidgin" source I can make it gaim again....
