- CJHtxGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I took that pic =) (Was at CES w/ plezops)
One of the people demoing it was none other than the creator of GAIM, Sean Egan, (We started calling him the gaim guy). Apparently hes workin at Google now, btw google had a crane at their booth we got to play with, as another google guy was sitting there watching us very nervously (the crane swung around like no other and would realllly hurt someone if hit smacked em in the head).- PeepSquat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey,
mark spencer started up GAIM in 98....
- PeepSquat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey,
- System84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now this looks cool. Maybe finally I can get rid of Trillian which absolutely refuses to connect to anything.
- zschendi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah that's cool cjhtxgeek :)
- zumpiez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh thank God. Buddy icons.
- link470, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now it just has to be compatible with MSN, ICQ, and the others.
- earobinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cant wait for this to come out. now if only google talk could work with msn that would be so key.
- beandog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0While I'm all for Google Talk being able to communicate with AIM, what I'm really worried about is -- will all other existing AIM clients be able to talk to ME?
- FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That looks great!!!
- caffeine211, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hooray. Buddy icons. Just what I've always wanted.
I don't really care about buddy icons, but having AIM integrated with Google Talk will be nice. I doubt they'll connect it to MSN/ICQ/etc. anytime soon, though. - stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Isn't google talk based off of gaim? If so then why dosn't it already have buddy icons. Gaim has had them for a long time, and why isn't there a linux port? Google talk blows right now and it would take alot more than buddy icons to make it a worth while chat program.
- unexplainedmilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@beandog: well it obviously wouldn't be connecting to AIM if you couldn't talk to people signed on using other AIM clients.
THINK before you type. - sajb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No offense, but I think this must be the most useless feature they could have come up with. People must really be starved for their Googlepron nowadays :P
And making it talk to AIM? Make it talk to Jabber servers first ffs! :D - defiradio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought GTalk used Jabber. We all saw this coming when G invested $1 billion to a 5% stake in AOL.
- bionicpill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One of the things I love about google talk is it's ultimate simplicity. I'd so much rather see them write an OSX version of google talk.
functionality > cutesy features - Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it can talk to AIM it can talk to ICQ.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would be more impressed if Google fixed their Jabber server to let GTalk actually do inter-server communication. Without that you kinda miss the whole point of a Jabber IM client.
- whfsdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was going to post what Otto said. Using an open IM protocol is useless unless you run an open network.
- Wang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please correct me if I am wrong...but is Google Talk still without secure connections/encryption? This was one of the missing features that turned a lot of people away from Google Talk in the first place. It is/was a planned feature (according to Google) but they seem to be spending more time on adding (less important imho) features like this :(
- edmicman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why use gtalk when you can use gaim? Gaim is better in almost every way!
- Plezops, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Isn't google talk based off of gaim? If so then why dosn't it already have buddy icons. Gaim has had them for a long time, and why isn't there a linux port? Google talk blows right now and it would take alot more than buddy icons to make it a worth while chat program.
Actually one of the creators is a Gaim person... and no its based of of the Jabber client, same as gaim.
I spent a while talking to the lead engineers of GT and they are going to be unraveleling new features quite soon. The reason you cant connect to MSN and Yahoo is because the have closed source code (they assured me they could crack this illegally, like trillian, but they would probably get sued because of it.). With Googles recent purchase of AIM they are will be able to connect to the AIM client. - gookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's with people digging a news about "buddy icons" of Google Talk.
Google is waaaaaay BEHIND. - godbout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not too pleased to see Buddy Icons come before a Mac OS X version.
- porplem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Buddy icons!? It's an IM revolution!
- ct2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd like a search engine not full of spam please - before Google Talk Google Pack Google Video Google News Google Toilet ... Google Nutcracker..Google WHATEVER ;)
- dep01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I knew that trivial 5% of AOL purchase had SOMETHING to do with IM...
- dep01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0"We've managed to take the GoogleTalk interface... and make it slightly more gay!"
- Kiltak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm pretty sure that future version of Google talk will be greatly improved. The 1st one sucked pretty bad, but I can't beleive that google will just keep it this way.
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The future of Google Talk is just the state of the current other instant messenger programs out there. I have no idea why google is pushing so hard with this crap....maybe because they know they got lots of blind followers who'll download any crap they put out.
- *hittalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what happened to the icons to email or call pplz on your contact list?
- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0once i can use aim with gtalk, im done with trillian.
- mutant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0aim -- sux.
- eean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Welcome to the 90s Google Talk.
- hexix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
Actually one of the creators is a Gaim person... and no its based of of the Jabber client, same as gaim.
A lot of mis-information going on here. Google Talk is not based on GAIM. GAIM is not based on the Jabber client. Jabber is an open protocol with open source clients and servers which you can download. GAIM, originally a GTK+ based AIM client for linux, has plugins for many IM protocols. One such protocol plugin is for Jabber.
Google happened to pick the Jabber IM protocol for it's Google Talk. They run their own server, and made their own client for windows. However, since it's using the Jabber protocol, you can connect to the google talk server using any IM client that supports Jabber. Because of the plugin for GAIM, you can use GAIM if you wish. However, GAIM is not based on the Jabber client.
Google has hired a GAIM developer to help work on Google Talk, but I'm fairly certain they did so after the initial release of Google Talk. This GAIM developer did not make Google Talk. I think they want him to help get Video working, which is strange considering there is no video support in GAIM.
Anyway, should be interesting to see if Google Talk gets better, cause right now it seems really pointless to me. It's kind of feeling like the honeymoon is over with Google. Google Talk was a lame release, GMail and Google Maps seem to be the same as they were a year ago, and Google Pack has got to be the lamest thing to come along in a long time.
C'mon Google, show us something cool. Buddy icons aren't exactly impressive. - ripcrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like Google Talk's simplicity. I also like that it works from my work desktop. Everything else seems to be blocked. It's probably due to the use of a higher port than the other clients. Before Google Talk it was email or a few crappy web-based IM Clients that proxied Yahoo or Jabber servers.
jaimy.us was one and now we have meebo.com, that worked better. - heymark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think most people here don't care about buddy icons, but the article is being dugg because Google Talk will soon be able to communicate with AIM, which is what a lot of users are looking forward to. Me included. Although, i don't necessarily agree that AIM is the best chat client or protocol out there. But, it's damn popular with the kiddies.
- replica, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Google Talk is a joke. Buddy icons? If you are excited about that you are a loser.
- rc_collins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google Talk is pointless. What on earth was google thinking when they released it? There is not a single thing about it that is better then any other IM service.
--dan - mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hexix, there is video support in GAIM, but it has been kept seperate from GAIM. gaim-vv (IIRC). GAIM 2.0 is supposed to integrate video support back into GAIM (although it still isn't in yet).
- pacificdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmmm... love google but Talk has been pretty unimpressive except for the voice quality which is exceptional for a free im client. i doubt buddy icons will make it any better....
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really love Google Talk, its simple, yet ultimately functional. The voice is clear as a phone call, the interface isn't clogged, and if you get a message while in-game, your comp doesn't totally die.
- crispyart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google Talk is way better than AIM or MSN. It's nice to see it slowly move forward in functionality. I'm switched over to it permanently once it can work with AIM users.
- arostad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope you got permission to post a pic of glaakmann@gmail.com's email haha...
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i've just been worried about how one would add buddies in an official multi-way IM program
- Brutal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AIM? Who cares? I don't know anybody who uses AIM.
- VerbalIronyX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well thanks for the recognition plezops...
I was with them too but w/e - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google talk needs alot more options than just some new buddy icons for me to switch and use it. Until then I'm using gaim 2.0
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like this. soon we'll only need to apps... with AIM/ICQ/GTalk & MSN/Yahoo offering multi-network connection this should be a very good year.
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"C'mon Google, show us something cool. Buddy icons aren't exactly impressive."
Remember this isn't google showing off buddy icons, it's some idiot with a camera taking photos they're probably not meant to be. With buddy icons may be all sorts of features that we're not privy to. It's interesting that until now there hasn't been a standard interface for buddy icons in jabber, will gtalk force jabber's hand? :) - tapo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1(Tapo, in a violent rage, smashes his head against his desk because of how stupid many people on Digg are in regards to google talk)
Okay...
1. Google Talk is *NOT* based off of Gaim. It does not use any part of Gaim, it's not even written in the same programming language as Gaim (Gaim is C, GTalk is C++)
2. Google seems to be opening server to server communication soon, which will allow it to talk to any other Jabber server. This is according to screenshots in the beta release, and the discovery of a Jabber server running at federation.google.com. The guys at gizmo project also announce that their client can send messages to and from google talk in internal testing.
3. "Buddy Icons" are called "avatars" in regards to jabber. For a long time, there wasn't a stable or useful way to implement them, but recently iChat implemented a quick hack that works well enough. Google is adopting this.
4. Google has opened up their voice negotiation protocol, so Google Talk will be able to support voice and video chat with whatever client supports it. iChat is said to be implementing this technology (known as jingle) in its next release, so Google doesn't need to develop a Mac client. Gaim 2.0 will feature jingle as well.
5. They're most likely not going to link up with MSN, Yahoo, or any of the like. Google has made their service completely open, and it's up to the other guys to decide if they want to open up or not. If you can't talk to your MSN buddies, it's not Google's fault.
6. AIM will most likely be running a "jabber transport" to work with Google Talk. Google Talk won't be an AIM client, and AIM won't be a Google Talk client. All of this will be server side. - abrudtkuhl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01. i use google talk cuz it's a kick ass network. i dont care if you are using aim...if you want to talk to me, switch.
2. Worst thing they could do right now is come out with buddy icons and not group messaging.
