- rrobster, on 10/12/2007, -19/+24Nice list, thanks.
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -21/+4Edit: wrong thread.
- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -13/+16Why the hell do people buried comment which say "Nice list, thanks" what else are they supposed to say?
- Samus, on 10/12/2007, -9/+21I hereby pronounce this activity (modding down otherwise sensible comments) the 'Diggtard effect'. And I think I'm about to become the next victim ;)
- Malakin, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6@TomP Useless comments will often get modded down. This is a dupe anyways and should be reported as so unless you enjoy having idiots post the same thing every week.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"Why the hell do people buried comment which say "Nice list, thanks" what else are they supposed to say?"
It offers nothing insightful and clutters the board. Not that most people on this site seem to care with the way comments are modded. I have seen very well thought out but controversial comments modded way down while simple 3 word comments like "cool list, digg" get 15 diggs. - po6ot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"Why the hell do people buried comment which say "Nice list, thanks" what else are they supposed to say?"
You should just digg the story and say nothing, unless you have something interesting to say.
Also if you agree with a comment. Then digg that up. Don't add another comment to say you agree with it. - Simen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5With the risk of turning the thread into a comment-discussion I feel enticed to say that comments like the one by "rrobster" are, in fact, not entirely useless.
Although I can understand that people would feel such comments a waste of space, they often serve a purpose for those who aren't willing to spend a lot of time reading comments, but want to know the nature of the general consensus...just to know, for example, if the download presented is viewed as a good one.
It's an effective and easy way to judge a link for those with limited time to do an in depth inspection themselves.
I'm not saying people should not bury them, but that people should continue posting them so that lazy folks like me still can use them if we want.
So, with that in mind: Yes. This is a nice list indeed.
- bryant, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5That site hurts.
- ojk007, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5man doesn't it?
i hate when people use white backgrounds, and nothing else. Digg only just cuts it - DNABeast, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Yeah! Digg should really put some animated gifs there to make it more interesting.
And use the blink tag more often. - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9As "dirty" as a dark backround looks with white or light-grey text, if done correctly, it makes for an easier read most of the time. Especially on text-heavy pages.
Quoted from Maddox:
Q: "Why does your site look so *****? / Why do you use such huge fonts?"
A: "When I go to a web site, I WANT TO READ THE CONTENT. Trust me, that micro-font everyone uses isn't nearly as original as they think. I've chosen a black background for most of my text because it's easier on the eyes than staring at a white screen. Think about it: your monitor is not a piece of paper, no matter how hard you try to make it one. Staring at a white background while you read is like staring at a light bulb (don't believe me? Try turning off the lights next time you use a word processor). Would you stare at a light bulb for hours at a time? Not if you want to keep your vision."
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=faq - xaxa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Try using the "White text, black background" bookmarklet from http://nontroppo.org/wiki/BookMarklets#pageappearance (should work in Firefox, I wrote it and tested it in Opera 8.5, and it's working in Opera 9.something-beta).
- ojk007, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5man doesn't it?
- wsando, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1some known, some cool, worth a look
- wallclimber, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Nice :o)

- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Dupe whore
- BeserkerNJ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0We all know this is a re-post, some people aren't able to monitor digg 24/7 so re digging stuff is perfectly valid and helpful in some cases. Plus it is not the fault of the poster, more the fault of the diggers. So just don't digg it.
Awesome list, good to let the world know.........
- ollien, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Ha ha, definately a repost... went to add to my 'Useful Stuff' bookmark folder and ... it was already there.... freaky.
- Drood, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Guess the thieving Digg monkeys don't like paying for anything.
- jambarama, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11This isn't a troll, this is an honest question. How many "list of freeware programs" do we need?
Searching "list free software" on digg turns up over 100 stories - almost 30 of which hit the front page. Searching "list freeware" turns up over 80 - about 20 of which hit the front page. Now I'm sure there is some overlap between the two, be even assuming complete overlatp - between say 100 total stories & 30 on the front page, do we need another list?
edit: Do we need a reposting of an old list each time it is updated?- yada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1looks like an out-of-work (resume page, but not posted?) google ads whore to me.. "hmm. i need to pay the rent & buy some booze. i think i'll just whip up another freeware list and let digg do all the work"..
of course, using adblock (linked from http://www.econsultant.com/firefox-extensions/i-want-some-useful-firefox-extensions.html ) you don't have to worry about those ads or tracking bugs on his pages.
hope he's not looking for web design work.....

- generalmx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Well, technically the first posted link was blogspam, this one is the direct link...either way, it's a great addition to anyone's bookmarks.
- notromda, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Very poor organization, doesn't even have notepad++ in the editors section. No digg.
- ocram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Notepad is open source, and as it says on the site, OSS is listed separately (here: http://www.econsultant.com/i-want-open-source-software/index.html )
- yimeng, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0fine
- tybris, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Nice list, though probably not very difficult to construct a second list using non of those programs.
- yimeng, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1no fine
- manchld, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0wtf?
- Jayzeee, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Nice list...
- vandalet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I found a few things on there i wanted and downloaded. A lot better than another list of free programming books.
- djnick, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2nice list!
- muyuu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Should be pointed out that some of those are windows-only, while others are cross-platform (linux, MacOS, others... and combinations thereof).
Others are not really necessary to be cross-platform, since virii and malware are 99% windows-only these days. Still, it would be nice to point that out to save people time. - Ruins, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Next on Digg: A list of 927 web pages containing lists of freeware to solve common problems, including a freeware list generator, great for making your own freeware list
- ockabewis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11How many times is this link going to be posted?

Is digg really all its cracked up to be? How can this be front page news when it has already been posted at least two other times, both more than 10 days ago?- cryonix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i think 2 more times will do....
- spyres, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, I've seen this link too many times on digg already. Reported as Dupe.
- admiralpro9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Most of that stuff could be done in Linux. Further, I that list could be way more organized and non-repetitive. I want to write a document: Notepad, Wordpad, Kate, gEdit. Notice the use of the colon. Ah grammar. Plus Firefox is not mentioned as a web browser / alternative to IEs lack of tabs. NO digg.
- mistajon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Not bad.... however, I think my site is better though :)
http://www.jk.net.au/tech/ (full of tech & freeware links) - darkmotion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Lol the design is pretty poop- but nice links
- smoothmedia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1repost for sure
- hometoast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Many of those applications (TextPad) are NOT freeware.
Many of them are Shareware or Trialware of whatever they want to call them. - Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1# cut mp3 files into small parts : mp3DirectCut
# cut wav files into smaller parts : CD Wave
# cut wav files into smaller parts : Wave Splitter
Wtf? Audacity does everything in one package! And it's GPL.. - fdemmer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1# paste image data from clipboard directly to a file: http://demmer.ipax.at/blog/?static=/wiki/&page=ProjectPasteToFile
sorry if anyone is offended by my shameless advertising, but i honestly think, that this tiny piece of software is really useful.
