Sixty One, A Digg Like Site For Music
thesixtyone.com — If Guitar Hero ™ is about shredding, Then Sixty One is about scouting. Musicians upload music and listeners decide which songs go on the homepage.
- 1957 diggs
- digg it
- bobshush, on 01/03/2008, -65/+6I already submitted this, http://digg.com/software/Finally_An_upvote_based_m ... - If we want this site to hit the front page, lets keep all the diggs on one page!
- bobshush, on 01/03/2008, -2/+42This one has acquired more diggs, so nvm. I just want better music...
- TenebrousX, on 01/03/2008, -4/+5it was the title
- feckineejit, on 01/03/2008, -0/+13yeah - just state the facts in your headlines, instead of opinion and it will be better received!
- tybris, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4The mob has decided.
- renegadeafk, on 01/03/2008, -4/+3Go cry about it.
- Sibre, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Well, this one hit the front page, and yours still only has 17 diggs...I'll digg this one.
- ayeroxor, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3If you would have remembered the ***** hyphen in "Digg-Like," I'll digg you up.
- saisumimen, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Actually, bobshush, someone submitted a link to this site even before you did. Dupes are part of a site like this, like it or not.
- implied, on 01/03/2008, -3/+34Very cool! I wonder if music execs actually look here..
- Tenoq, on 01/03/2008, -5/+3No, they usually go for sites that stay up and running. :p
- zongamin, on 01/03/2008, -4/+1Why would they? To see a daft punk video?
- lepht, on 01/03/2008, -0/+12Isn't this about proving that the execs are irrelevant now? If the people can find the artists they like on their own, and give their money directly to the artist, what the hell do we need some douchebag middleman in a suit for?
- Navicerts, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2get IN the ***** box!
- geddon, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Who cares? Suits standing in-between the artists and the fans produce nothing of value (apart from advertising dollars for the execs).
- thetanman, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Man I love this site. Very well executed. Hope they get more bandwidth soon.
- cluckinchicken, on 01/03/2008, -0/+0Hell no they don't go there. They find their talent on American Idol silly.
- vault, on 01/03/2008, -3/+49I'm embarassed to admit I actually like the cover of 'Hey Ya' that's #1 ...
- maxpower2911, on 01/03/2008, -0/+23That's actually very interesting. I think he did a really good job with it.
- Idrive, on 01/03/2008, -0/+6This remix blew up on the web a few months back. A few tv stations ran it on local news. Here is one from arizona:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUf32LNO3eI - ian7208, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6why would you be embarrassed?
- floatingpoints, on 01/03/2008, -3/+1Because it's embarassing, duh.
- jon30041, on 01/03/2008, -1/+5That song got a ton of play on the Alternative station here in Chicago. They got a gig for the live broadcast for the Cubs' opening day, as well.
I think I heard it... good god, last winter? Musta been in January or February... - Scagli3tti, on 01/03/2008, -0/+6Ha, don't be embarrassed. It blew up on digg over a year ago:
http://digg.com/music/awesome_accoustic_cover_of_o ... - MelroseMan, on 01/04/2008, -1/+1I thought the song was terrible. Get real people.
- corevette, on 01/03/2008, -3/+10example song: http://www.thesixtyone.com/hot/#/ExplosionsInTheSk ...
- Grimace421, on 01/03/2008, -7/+18Explosions in the Sky!!! The greatest band nobody has ever heard of...
- trzynascie, on 01/03/2008, -1/+14Um, no.
Explosions in the Sky (read more)
10,240,118 plays scrobbled on Last.fm - SRSco, on 01/03/2008, -0/+15Nobody has heard of them? The same band that turns down large record company deals to stay with a smaller label? The same band who licensed a song for the TV show Friday Night Lights? The same band that gets written about in Spin and Billboard?
- kevyn, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1yeah, the same band who also recently played toronto V festival... and were spectacularly loud. (and they rocked)
- CVanO, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1not only did they license a song to the tv show friday night lights, but they did nearly the whole soundtrack for the movie
- yfguitarist, on 01/03/2008, -2/+11I think what Grimace421 is trying to say is that most people don't know who they are, seeing as how they aren't plastered all over the radio, which is true.
And yes, Explosions in the Sky is amazing. If you like them, check out Sigur Ros and Mogwai.- zongamin, on 01/03/2008, -1/+7Wow - where do you find these obscure bands!
Seriously - sigur ros are a massive band.- yfguitarist, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3No need for sarcasm. I never said Sigur Ros or Mogwai were obscure. I said if you like Explosions in the Sky, you should check out Sigur Ros and Mogwai.
- zongamin, on 01/03/2008, -1/+7Wow - where do you find these obscure bands!
- crispydook, on 01/03/2008, -0/+0if you love explosions check out
http://www.thesixtyone.com/#/xihilisk/collection/c ... - SnakeO, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1you can download the songs by viewing the network traffic (firebug). i.e:
http://s3.amazonaws.com/thesixtyone_production/aud ...
Also, I have a similar website in development: http://www.indieed.com/
not live yet, just a preview
- trzynascie, on 01/03/2008, -1/+14Um, no.
- crispydook, on 01/03/2008, -0/+0http://www.thesixtyone.com/#/xihilisk/collection/c ...
- Grimace421, on 01/03/2008, -7/+18Explosions in the Sky!!! The greatest band nobody has ever heard of...
- deadbaby, on 01/03/2008, -6/+172Seems like a good idea but it has major potential to degrade into complete garbage. A band specializing in songs about Ron Paul and LOL CATS would dominate the charts.
- jthei, on 01/03/2008, -2/+62better yet, a song about Ron Paul BY the Lol Catz - I'll tear it up on the key-tar, who's in?
- joegibes, on 01/03/2008, -3/+4I'll play some bass Huckabee-style.
- consonance, on 01/03/2008, -2/+2I can play the rock flute like Tony Snow.
- gllopc, on 01/03/2008, -2/+2More like the skin flute like Aurora Snow.
- jon30041, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3I'll play a bunch of upturned plastic buckets, like the kids looking to get donations for their "high school basketball team jersey fund" that hang around after ball games.
- consonance, on 01/03/2008, -2/+2I can play the rock flute like Tony Snow.
- joegibes, on 01/03/2008, -3/+4I'll play some bass Huckabee-style.
- Nosnevets02, on 01/03/2008, -2/+3Then have Fox News ban that song from the radio. (Don't know how they'd do that)
- LiquidIse, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2DOTA Song anyone?
- jthei, on 01/03/2008, -2/+62better yet, a song about Ron Paul BY the Lol Catz - I'll tear it up on the key-tar, who's in?
- fuzzmeister, on 01/03/2008, -4/+19http://www.ijigg.com/
That is essentially the same site.- Mosatii, on 01/03/2008, -0/+8I frequent both and very much prefer thesixtyone. It's much better looking and functioning.
- clari0n, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Both of these sites look very interesting. Another that's worth checking out is Amiestreet.com. It's not exactly the same time of site, but it's similar in that artists submit their music, and people vote on it. You can purchase the music, and as it's purchased and voted up, the price increases, benefiting the artist in a very democratic way. You can also earn credit to spend on songs by voting on songs and reviewing them.
- bakdraft, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1there is http://www.itbreaks.com also
- nonstop87, on 01/03/2008, -13/+35what no ska section?
- lukas88, on 01/03/2008, -2/+45You, me, and the three other people who still enjoy ska are really disappointed!
- Puppetfunk, on 01/03/2008, -2/+15Well unless I know you both, I know 4 people who like Ska. So that's at least 7!
- orbingpunk, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3Count me in as well!
- bagboyrebel, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4I'm here to, and at least 3 of my friends like it. We have 12 now.
- DatumPirate, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3Add one more for me and 2 of my friends. 15!
- jon30041, on 01/03/2008, -2/+3Me and... ummm... christ... ummm... about 50 people I've met, including the local ska bands I have frequented... basically everyone at those shows, which is pretty big because The Chimney Sweeps won their high school talent competition I want to say last year, though it could have been the year before that.
- quiznos, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3There's seven kids in my ska band, add us to the list
- DatumPirate, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1We tried to start a ska band a while back. It didn't work out too well.
- rreadysetno, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2+1 etc.
- othercassie, on 01/03/2008, -2/+3hahaha. is this multiple personalities or imaginary friends?
- MalDON, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2I'm sad now.
- quiznos, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Seriously, I added my ska band to that and I had to put 'rock' as the genre. Oh well.
- Puppetfunk, on 01/03/2008, -2/+15Well unless I know you both, I know 4 people who like Ska. So that's at least 7!
- SerifTheRobot, on 01/03/2008, -12/+6Probably 'cause ska sucks
- Rammsteined, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Ska has all been done before, and better. New ska bands are just retarded.
- rreadysetno, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1I wouldn't go that far. Some bands are good.
- Rammsteined, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Ska has all been done before, and better. New ska bands are just retarded.
- unearth, on 01/03/2008, -0/+6Yeah, there is a real lack of diversity in the genres. You can tell that most of its users need an education on what constitutes what genre, too.
The metal section is full of pop-rock, most likely because kids these days think Slipknot is death metal. I'll stick to last.fm for finding similar artists. - m00n1, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5Nor a dancehall, reggae, raga, death metal, musique concrete, twee pop, or about 10,000 other genres. It was really a pointless, pretentious question to ask.
- lukas88, on 01/03/2008, -2/+45You, me, and the three other people who still enjoy ska are really disappointed!
- Puppetfunk, on 01/03/2008, -3/+48And like Digg will it lean sharply towards one genre?
- xyzunit, on 01/03/2008, -5/+3Like Digg, it has a filter.
- joel8x, on 01/03/2008, -0/+8If it has a Ron Paul song right behind an ode to Steve Jobs on the front page...
- SleepingOrange, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2No, it doesn't... it actually has a very diverse selection.
- aydoubleyou, on 01/03/2008, -6/+9Why didn't I think of this? =/
- brentinkc, on 01/03/2008, -7/+14Pop music sucks because it's designed to appeal to the most amount of people.
Think about that.- malloyoy, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6Think about what you just said. Pop music DOESN'T suck for "the most amount of people" so you could argue pop music is the best genre.
- terminal157, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2The best genre for entertainment purposes, perhaps. The problem is that we don't have clear enough language to talk about what are vastly different things.
- numb, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1It appeals to the lowest common denominator. I think "pop" music becomes boring more quickly to people as their tastes in music become more sophisticated.
- brentinkc, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3People are stupid, pop music sucks.
- DeFex, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Mcdognads must make the best hamburger then.
eat ***** 1,000,000,000 flies cant be wrong.
- terminal157, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2The best genre for entertainment purposes, perhaps. The problem is that we don't have clear enough language to talk about what are vastly different things.
- mcmlxxii, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Seems pretty democratic to me. If people are voting individually for music they've never heard by artists they've never heard of before, I think that's a lot more honest than the music industry marketing a small proportion of occasionally talented people.
- Rastafar, on 01/03/2008, -0/+0Im sorry to disagree...
I do hate mainstream music like Britney Spears or all this people that come out of music reality shows. But generalizing as usual is not the way to go. The Beatles were pop, and wether you like them or not I dont think you can say its rubbish or its made to appeal to the most ammount of people.
Rubbish music is made in all genres, be it the most experimental ones or the most mainstream, I just dont think you can label one whole music genre just because a lot of people like it
- malloyoy, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6Think about what you just said. Pop music DOESN'T suck for "the most amount of people" so you could argue pop music is the best genre.
- kamikazicondon, on 01/03/2008, -5/+36digg killed this site already... digglike my ass
- skyshock1, on 01/03/2008, -6/+3What ever happened to http://www.imeem.com ?
- blackdude, on 01/03/2008, -4/+49If it was digg-like, it wouldn't be down right now.
- Heidenreich12, on 01/03/2008, -1/+5i was thinking the exact same thing.
- SmackedbyEVO, on 01/03/2008, -4/+2http://www.gamerefresh.com - digg like site for games
- MalDON, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2I thought it was http://kongregate.com
- mntalkase, on 01/03/2008, -0/+18Damn, and I had the idea to do something like this after I got really into Digg. But I have to admit, the site's implementation is nearly flawless. Just start playing with it a bit and you'll see all the UI goodies they packed in there.
- NinjaNato, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Me too :(
I like the points driven bumping system. That's a nice touch.
I really hope it works out for these guys. If this is successful it could bypass the recording industry all together giving ALL musicians a chance a 'making it'... It also gives us a lot of quality, free (?), music.- archer104, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1It seems like the points system sucks because people will just bump the popular stuff in a bid to get more points and recognition.
- warkro, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4I love the pop-up trivia for each song.
- NinjaNato, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Me too :(
- Jo9100, on 01/03/2008, -0/+6Sixty One? More like Five Hundred
- kjcdude, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1i see what you did there
- hillkiwi, on 01/03/2008, -3/+8It's too bad there's no 'Industrial' genre.
- mnmleon, on 01/03/2008, -1/+5i like you
- jon30041, on 01/03/2008, -1/+5I like both of you.
Wanna blast some Stabbing Westward? =D Now sure how industrial it ranks to youts guys, but it's pretty sweet anyways...- hillkiwi, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1I'll check them out.
- jon30041, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Stabbing Westward is now disbanded, but they were on the radio in the mid to late 90s.
They still get play on the station I listen to.

- TweakNF, on 01/03/2008, -4/+2This site is really cool. I've found some really really great unknown music on here, the best of which is Http://www.thesixtyone.com/Catcher/
I bought this bands CD on itunes after hearing one song, and I never would have found it if i hadn't used this site. Ths gets a digg from me.- orbingpunk, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Catcher is pretty great. I'm quite fond of Skybox, myself.

- orbingpunk, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Catcher is pretty great. I'm quite fond of Skybox, myself.
- joshuagor44, on 01/03/2008, -3/+7It'd be more like Digg if it could handle all of its users.
- TweakNF, on 01/03/2008, -2/+2Yeah it looks like digg crashed it.
- Indemnity, on 01/03/2008, -3/+1Just what I was about to say.
- Navicerts, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3well, I wonder how digg would fare if it streamed music.
- JasonHilton, on 01/03/2008, -1/+16We sixty-one'ed their server.
- treyevans, on 01/03/2008, -2/+3you meant like digg without all the drama you find in a high school political science class
- orbingpunk, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Hate to say it, but this has already been posted. I saw it on here several weeks ago and now frequent. I can't find the link I used to get there, but I found a post here: http://digg.com/music/Discover_new_music_at_theSix ...
- darkane, on 01/03/2008, -4/+4This was done many years ago. It's nothing new. There's 50 similar sites. Buried for being hosted on Slicehost.

- lennybird, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3Sorry, a little random, but I have music on the mind: Anyone see "Once"? If you have, does it not have an amazing soundtrack? I need to buy it asap =(...
end randomness.- bloominoctober, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Once had a soundtrack that was BETTER than the plot of the movie. The music made that movie everything that it was.
- vincenzo7, on 01/03/2008, -5/+2the fact that this site has crashed means I'll never be visiting it. oh and no digg. wow
- nitesoulja, on 01/03/2008, -3/+261? wtf come up with something more random? and yea site got bombed by digg

- subkey, on 01/03/2008, -8/+0A digg site for music? like this; http://www.digg.com/news/music?
- Daumen, on 01/03/2008, -3/+1Wow, what a cheesy slogan! Pointless guitar hero reference? thats what the kids think is cool these days right? Lets put it in the slogan to appear hip!

- Daunteh, on 01/03/2008, -3/+3I prefeer http://www.last.fm
- SquigglyP, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1that site is at least useful for finding neat stuff you've never heard of before. that + myspace are pretty much the best way I've found to turn up some really good, yet under-the-radar musicians.
- SquigglyP, on 01/03/2008, -1/+7I thought the musicians were supposed to post the music? You're telling me Tesla, Daft Punk, Mogwai and 10Years are posting their music to this site? Earth Wind and Fire?
Would be better if a) it were geared more towards independent music (as opposed to 'indie' which is anything but, lately) and b) if the #1 picks for all of the genres weren't absolute garbage. The only decent selection of stuff on there is in the classical section. 10 Years is #1 on the metal page? wtf kind of 'metal' is that, and how the ***** did they get #1 on ANY page.- catalysis, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1I don't think there is a single metal band in the top ten of the metal section.
- Zlorp, on 01/03/2008, -6/+1yeah, i took this site seriously for about 15 seconds, until i clicked on the "metal" tab. is this site some sort of ***** joke?

Metal is one of the most creative forms of music.- JustFender, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6you really think that, honestly? i like some metal but nearly every band sounds like slayer, bullet for my bloody valentine or pantera, theyre about as diverse as the modern indie genre
- Rammsteined, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1Then you can hardly claim to know metal.
- rmones, on 01/04/2008, -1/+1I'll have to go ahead and agree with justfender 100%. Sorry all you metal heads - I have given it a shot - i guess i just don't hear what you guys are hearing.
- Zlorp, on 01/03/2008, -1/+0just, theres some good deathmetal out there. i wouldnt expect you to agree with me on that one, its definitely aquired. but i do agree that just normal metal has gone downhill. deathmetal has found a new set of legs though
