The Digg This! Firefox Toolbar Extension

mthorn.net — I couldn't find any decent Firefox extensions for digging articles that just simply allowed you to submit an article and was integrated into the toolbar. So I did what any self-respecting programmer would do and created my own. Plus I used it to digg this article.

  • Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -22/+40I'd like to get better source icons for the buttons. I used the icon pack from digg, but they aren't the best size or color for the application. I guess I could contact digg or wait till they read this comment :).

      Sorry, but that isn't correct. The boomarklet submits the URL and Title of the page you are on, however doesn't assist submitting the summary. This is a good alternative if this extension isn't compatible with your edition of Firefox and also for those who use IE, Opera, etc.

However, if you're not a Firefox user, this still works (inputs title, URL and selected text as body).

    there is a toolbar for digging. but i hate toolbars and the buttons are so much better.

Either some stupid people are playing around or it is a calculated effort to make Digg look bad (maybe Digg competitors).

    • haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -22/+18That would be really nice. The toolbar should have an item called "Dugg?" which searches for the page using the title or URL. Additionally, you should be able to middle click or right click and choose "open in new tab" or "open in new window". Right now it does everything in the current tab.
    • MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -24/+20The one time I submitted a story, I did a search for the story that I was submitting to make sure I wasn't duping. I found nothing. Then, as I was submitting, the submission page returned a "Is this story the same as the one you're submitting?" notice. I don't know why the search didn't find it, but the inner workings of Digg caught the dupe anyway before the story was actually submitted.

      Right now, it may be dependent upon title, description, and/or URL. I really don't know, but as their detection gets better, the problem of dupes with sort itself out.

Far to many very useful extensions install a toolbar, make entries in the "tools" menu, and/or clog up your right-click menu, and only a few let you customize which of those you want to happen. This looks pretty clean and functional, without being too intrusive.

  • egorgry, on 10/12/2007, -26/+21Nice. I like how nicely it integrates. It's not a fullblown toolbar taking up real estate on my puny 1600x1200 - 20.1" monitor. ;) It works with the latest swiftfox built for amd64 on ubuntu dapper.

I am a frequent tab user in firefox so I go through 3-5 front pages and just middle-click the ones I find interesting to open them in a new tab. The only bad thing is, I usually forget to digg them.

      NOT TRUE! try submitting a story which has already been submitted and see what happens. Digg now intelligently prompts the user notifying them that the same story has been submitted before. In the past most dups weren't picked up by digg, but v3 fixed that.

    • sik0fewl, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5I have to agree with the "Digg This" menu. It would be nice to disable the menu, like you can with the del.icio.us menubar. The most annoying thing about the menu is that it hijacks the Alt+D key combo, which is used to go to the address bar. I can't use it until at least that is fixed :)

  • Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -22/+19If Dugg offered an API to find duppes I would gladly use it. So that if you clicked "Digg This" and the article existed it will just increase the Digg count. I'll figure out a way to do this. I could probably use AJAX to do a look ahead to see if the article is Dugg first. The problem is you can only tell if an article is dugg by the article title, not the url. I'll try my best.

    I agree that this could lead to more dupes, so I'll figure out a way to prevent them.

Some group of people are going through firefox extension threads and modding everything down comments and trying to hold them at -10. They're really quick at it too. Within a few minutes, any post gets to -10 territory. Personally, I find it kind of amusing, simply because it points out just how horribly broken Digg's comment moderation system is.

  • DeadlySin, on 10/12/2007, -12/+9So far I've been using the 'Digg This!' extention for FF which adds a small icon (and right click option) to add whichever page you're viewing to digg. It's been a great lightweight tool, but I might just start using this instead.

    On a side note, some diggers need to grow up and stop voting down comments for no reason.
  • Teo76, on 10/12/2007, -12/+10This extension disables the ALT+D keyboard shortcut which I use in both Firefox and IE to move the focus to the browser's address bar, so I can type an URL.

    This is a VERY BAD thing.

    To the author of this extension: the extension is GREAT, but please don't hijack the ALT+D key combination which is VERY IMPORTANT for many users!!!! I'm uninstalling this great extension NOW, because of this!

      Make sure you disable your virus scanner when you open the file. If you forget to, and it warns you about "MyDoom", don't worry about it -- it's just a, uh, bug in your scanner.

And then the same twenty people who have a Diggswarm and a Digg icon and a blog about their Digg blogging experience and a link to their Flickr gallery of pictures of them digging each other's trackbacks can digg the Digg-related story so that anything that happens in the wonderful world of Digg is well and truly dugg. Because, otherwise, who'd know? Or care?

    Based on the excellent feedback from here I will make an update in the next few days that will show if an article has already been dugg and allow you to digg it instead of submit it.

  • TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6What I would like to see is a FireFox Extension that will sort through my Favorite Places and find the links already posted on Digg and "Digg them" that way I can remove clutter from my favorite places...

    Since I've signed up with Digg I've been going through my favorites to get rid of the excess stuff, but it's just too much really....

    What I'm currently doing is taking each story in my favorites and then trying to submit it to see if it's there or not( if so I digg it and then delete the favorite)...this is a tedious process though

    install it and then you just right click on the page you would like to submit. Same functionality...new tab pops up. No need to click a menu.
    • Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5I saw it. It's not what I wanted, I wanted a button in the toolbar. This is just an alternate method to satisfy different preferences. Also I don't know if the right click tool grabs the title and summary for you.

      PS - I upadated the extension to work with Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 (minor configuration issue).

    At which point, one could probably get through reading the new Diggs in a few minutes and get back to real work more quickly.
