The Digg This! Firefox Toolbar Extension
mthorn.net — I couldn't find any decent Firefox extensions for digging articles that just simply allowed you to submit an article and was integrated into the toolbar. So I did what any self-respecting programmer would do and created my own. Plus I used it to digg this article.
- 2256 diggs
- digg it
- Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -22/+40I'd like to get better source icons for the buttons. I used the icon pack from digg, but they aren't the best size or color for the application. I guess I could contact digg or wait till they read this comment :).
mthorn- sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -32/+19Digg This Bookmarklet: http://www.skattertech.com/2006/06/digg-this-bookmarklet/
*Works on Firefox, IE, Safari, and Opera. - Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -29/+21@sahaskatta: That only submits the URL, it doesn't submit the title or summary.
- sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -24/+15@Aculeus
Sorry, but that isn't correct. The boomarklet submits the URL and Title of the page you are on, however doesn't assist submitting the summary. This is a good alternative if this extension isn't compatible with your edition of Firefox and also for those who use IE, Opera, etc. - lordthor, on 10/12/2007, -28/+25Hmm... That's very nice... I'm surprized by how useful and interesting this is. I'll definitely be using it in the near future. :)
- Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -27/+22@sahaskatta : My mistake. It looks if Snowcone added summary support too. A great alternative especially for non-Firefox users.
- Corvillus, on 10/12/2007, -11/+8I've been using this bookmarklet I threw together at http://corvillus.com/2006/07/21/digg-this-bookmarklet/ for a while now, but I have since switched to this new extension. However, if you're not a Firefox user, this still works (inputs title, URL and selected text as body).
- heliox, on 10/12/2007, -15/+12Very nice app - Dug
To make it better, can you make it search Digg to confirm the URL is not a dupe? - stisaac, on 10/12/2007, -14/+9digg already does that
- comster, on 10/12/2007, -13/+10I must say.... FINALLY!
I've been waiting for this for a while.
- sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -32/+19Digg This Bookmarklet: http://www.skattertech.com/2006/06/digg-this-bookmarklet/
- psilanthropist, on 10/12/2007, -24/+21brilliant work. was looking for something likt this for a long time.
there is a toolbar for digging. but i hate toolbars and the buttons are so much better.
How about compatibilty for Bon Echo Beta 1 ??????- Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -26/+23Right, I should probably have called it a "button extension", but I figured no one would know what I meant. I looked for a while and couldn't wait any longer to have one.
- Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -23/+20@psilanthropist: I'm not sure what the requirements are to get it working for Bon Echo, but I'll take a look. I belive it should work out of the box, I probably just screwed up the config.
- Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -26/+23Just checked, works fine in Firefox 2.0 Beta 1.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -16/+13Wtf? Why is aucleus getting buried? He's posting relevant developing info.
- ncboxer, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7I've seen this on other top stories as well. Someone or some people are going through and burying all comments, no matter if they are good or not. Either some stupid people are playing around or it is a calculated effort to make Digg look bad (maybe Digg competitors).
- expatdiver, on 10/12/2007, -24/+21Cool extension. Now if I can just find something to check to see if the story is already submitted.
- haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -22/+18That would be really nice. The toolbar should have an item called "Dugg?" which searches for the page using the title or URL. Additionally, you should be able to middle click or right click and choose "open in new tab" or "open in new window". Right now it does everything in the current tab.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -24/+20The one time I submitted a story, I did a search for the story that I was submitting to make sure I wasn't duping. I found nothing. Then, as I was submitting, the submission page returned a "Is this story the same as the one you're submitting?" notice. I don't know why the search didn't find it, but the inner workings of Digg caught the dupe anyway before the story was actually submitted.
Right now, it may be dependent upon title, description, and/or URL. I really don't know, but as their detection gets better, the problem of dupes with sort itself out. - Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -25/+22@haxx: You can use Ctrl click to open in new tab.
- teledog, on 10/12/2007, -23/+18This is a very cool extension. I installied it straightaway. Nice.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -24/+19Great idea about the buttons as opposed to toolbar. Far to many very useful extensions install a toolbar, make entries in the "tools" menu, and/or clog up your right-click menu, and only a few let you customize which of those you want to happen. This looks pretty clean and functional, without being too intrusive.
- akuma624, on 10/12/2007, -18/+13someone please post a mirror
- crimson117, on 10/12/2007, -21/+15Nice work!
- benw, on 10/12/2007, -17/+10Wow, that's awesome. It just magically transformed Digg so it's no longer just a list of links to third-party articles with comments associated with them. Oh, no, wait.
- ziadoz, on 10/12/2007, -25/+23Great extension. Shame though because I think it will mean a rise in the fanboy articles we get here from certain users. Dugg for your hard work and effort though.
- egorgry, on 10/12/2007, -26/+21Nice. I like how nicely it integrates. It's not a fullblown toolbar taking up real estate on my puny 1600x1200 - 20.1" monitor. ;) It works with the latest swiftfox built for amd64 on ubuntu dapper.
- oakj423, on 10/12/2007, -13/+9no one cares about your snazzy computer or monitor
- virtualmachine, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7@egorgry
Nice. I like how nicely it integrates. It's not a fullblown toolbar taking up real estate on my mighty Black and White 640 x 480 - 10.1" monitor. ;) But what the hey I have duals! lol

- thedonga, on 10/12/2007, -18/+13very nice work.
- in4matik, on 10/12/2007, -23/+19Nice work. I just hope that not too many articles will be blindly submitted...
Still, it's a proof your a good programmer: get the knowledge, code the knowledge, spread the knowledge - moussam, on 10/12/2007, -25/+22WTF why is everyone being dugg down?
- cadich, on 10/12/2007, -22/+19good question
- ericsnels, on 10/12/2007, -19/+15@moussam
Because of comments like yours. - CoolDude330, on 10/12/2007, -24/+21I sense the work of IE users...
- SPNKrPunk, on 10/12/2007, -23/+19I sense the work of Calacanis and his Netscape minions.
- JMJimmy, on 10/12/2007, -17/+15Fight the down diggers! Digg up! haha!
- josephlucas, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7because everyone just finished reading this previous story before reading this one:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Bug_or_Conspiracy_Digg_users_go_CRAZY_modding_down_comments - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5It appears that someone's got about seven bots going through and burying everybody.
- hosiah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1OK, color me stupid. I just have to ask: WHY would somebody make a bot to go through and dig everybody down? That doesn't affect the story, does it? So you have a story still pushed to the top, and comments all dug down underneath it... what am I missing?
- CAvenger, on 10/12/2007, -24/+20Digg will become slashdot soon if the rating system is abused any further.
- ericsnels, on 10/12/2007, -22/+18I would like something like this that would just digg the story instead of submit the story. I am a frequent tab user in firefox so I go through 3-5 front pages and just middle-click the ones I find interesting to open them in a new tab. The only bad thing is, I usually forget to digg them.
- IanMathews, on 10/12/2007, -12/+8I totally do that too, maybe i should digg stuff. Its kinda sad seeing how I dig 50+ articles a day. Yay digg, boo newspapers, yay this extension. dugg...for once
- creamy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I usually middle-click the '.. comments' link. It helps, a bit.
- roastedbagel, on 10/12/2007, -18/+11Great, another way to get duplicate stories on Digg.
- sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -21/+17"another way to get duplicate stories on Digg"
NOT TRUE! try submitting a story which has already been submitted and see what happens. Digg now intelligently prompts the user notifying them that the same story has been submitted before. In the past most dups weren't picked up by digg, but v3 fixed that. - JMJimmy, on 10/12/2007, -15/+10I did not know this - very cool, ignore my next comment then!
- sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -21/+17"another way to get duplicate stories on Digg"
- JMJimmy, on 10/12/2007, -20/+15It would be REALLY cool if you could have it automatically search digg to see if the story has been submitted before! (don't like the 'Digg This!' in the menu system personally).
Great job!- sik0fewl, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5I have to agree with the "Digg This" menu. It would be nice to disable the menu, like you can with the del.icio.us menubar. The most annoying thing about the menu is that it hijacks the Alt+D key combo, which is used to go to the address bar. I can't use it until at least that is fixed :)
- Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7@sik0fewl: oops, my bad. I'll fix ASAP.
- Snowcone, on 10/12/2007, -23/+18I revised the Skatter Tech Bookmarklet: It now submits the link, title, and summary if you so choose: http://crasco.blogspot.com/2006/07/digg-bookmarklet.html
- Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -22/+19If Dugg offered an API to find duppes I would gladly use it. So that if you clicked "Digg This" and the article existed it will just increase the Digg count. I'll figure out a way to do this. I could probably use AJAX to do a look ahead to see if the article is Dugg first. The problem is you can only tell if an article is dugg by the article title, not the url. I'll try my best.
I agree that this could lead to more dupes, so I'll figure out a way to prevent them. - Dayz, on 10/12/2007, -20/+17Whats with all the negative digging in here?
- MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -19/+15Why are people modding down everyone? This guy made a useful ff extension for this site and people are modding down all the positive comments? Wow, talk about jealous people.
The fact that everyone has unlimited mod capabilities is yet another flaw. The friend's list and unlimited mods are ruining this site. - Mtap, on 10/12/2007, -19/+15Wow there are more buried comments on this story then i have seen in a long time...cool story, gets a digg from me.
- Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -19/+15Seems odd that the story has a lot of diggs but the comments do not. I smell tampering.
- tedwardo2, on 10/12/2007, -17/+9Hey, could you guys do me a favor and mod this down, too?
- Snowcone, on 10/12/2007, -17/+12Good lord. I fix a weak bookmarklet and I get knocked down? Thanks digg users! You make it all worth it!
- helix400, on 10/12/2007, -14/+9Nah, it's nothing against you. Some group of people are going through firefox extension threads and modding everything down comments and trying to hold them at -10. They're really quick at it too. Within a few minutes, any post gets to -10 territory. Personally, I find it kind of amusing, simply because it points out just how horribly broken Digg's comment moderation system is.
- eug2k, on 10/12/2007, -18/+18I'm willing to bet its all one guy digging down all the comments. If you really have no life you could sit there opening up a bunch of digg accounts just to ***** with someone for making a great firefox extension. Nice job on the extension man.
- MourningZoo, on 10/12/2007, -14/+10Great Job! I love it :-D
- postapoc, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6nevermind
- unstatusthequo, on 10/12/2007, -14/+9Big deal. There are hundreds or thousands of us that can digg the comments right back up. Try to keep up, *****(s).
- LanceManning, on 10/12/2007, -13/+10I respect someone that does what you did.
- twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -12/+9This is freaking awesome!
- joshualindquist, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Looks really cool.. no go in 2.0b1 of course. Do any extensions work in 2.0b1?
- DeadlySin, on 10/12/2007, -12/+9So far I've been using the 'Digg This!' extention for FF which adds a small icon (and right click option) to add whichever page you're viewing to digg. It's been a great lightweight tool, but I might just start using this instead.
On a side note, some diggers need to grow up and stop voting down comments for no reason. - Teo76, on 10/12/2007, -12/+10This extension disables the ALT+D keyboard shortcut which I use in both Firefox and IE to move the focus to the browser's address bar, so I can type an URL.
This is a VERY BAD thing.
To the author of this extension: the extension is GREAT, but please don't hijack the ALT+D key combination which is VERY IMPORTANT for many users!!!! I'm uninstalling this great extension NOW, because of this!- Matsu, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7Perhaps use F6?
- Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7@Teo76: Yep, my mistake. I'm fixing now.
- stoph, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6or use Control-L
- efjenkins, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Can someone email me this extension? I get a download error when I try to install it.
ernster at gee mail dot com- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Sure, I'll email it to you!
Make sure you disable your virus scanner when you open the file. If you forget to, and it warns you about "MyDoom", don't worry about it -- it's just a, uh, bug in your scanner. - Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4@efjenkins: You have to click on the error and allow extenstions from mthorn.net. Oh and you have to be using Firefox...
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Sure, I'll email it to you!
- benw, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Well, if nothing else, I know where to find links to stories about Digg. They're linked from Digg. And then the same twenty people who have a Diggswarm and a Digg icon and a blog about their Digg blogging experience and a link to their Flickr gallery of pictures of them digging each other's trackbacks can digg the Digg-related story so that anything that happens in the wonderful world of Digg is well and truly dugg. Because, otherwise, who'd know? Or care?
- Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5I'll be waiting for a bookmarklet that can do this. If del.cio.us has one, so can digg.
- minuteZERO, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6very nice job. I'm looking for something similar for google desktop/ff extension so i can quickly digg a story (not submit) without coming to the site.
- Securityguru, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5does anyone have the extension or theme that makes gmail look like digg?
- Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -11/+10Updated.
Changlog
--------
0.1.1b
: Fixed - Hijacked Alt+D, now uses Alt+!
Based on the excellent feedback from here I will make an update in the next few days that will show if an article has already been dugg and allow you to digg it instead of submit it. - GoNoles, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6What about adding a way to remove the Menu Item? I keep my bookmark toolbar up there on the menu row and I don't want extra menu items eating up my space.
Great extension!- Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -11/+9Right, I forgot that change. I'll make it so you can hide the menu item.
- gavreh, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7i'm getting a download error? :-(
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6What I would like to see is a FireFox Extension that will sort through my Favorite Places and find the links already posted on Digg and "Digg them" that way I can remove clutter from my favorite places...
Since I've signed up with Digg I've been going through my favorites to get rid of the excess stuff, but it's just too much really....
What I'm currently doing is taking each story in my favorites and then trying to submit it to see if it's there or not( if so I digg it and then delete the favorite)...this is a tedious process though - uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Awesome work! I was thinking about trying something similar a while back, but I don't know a whole lot about developing FireFox extensions.
Thanks! - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6What a useful thread of grey. ;)
People aren't very tolerant around these parts, are they? - Sumyunguy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6This guys must not have looked very hard, there is a great little extension in the mozilla database that I prefer much more than the listed extension...
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1477/
install it and then you just right click on the page you would like to submit. Same functionality...new tab pops up. No need to click a menu.- Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5I saw it. It's not what I wanted, I wanted a button in the toolbar. This is just an alternate method to satisfy different preferences. Also I don't know if the right click tool grabs the title and summary for you.
PS - I upadated the extension to work with Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 (minor configuration issue).
- Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5I saw it. It's not what I wanted, I wanted a button in the toolbar. This is just an alternate method to satisfy different preferences. Also I don't know if the right click tool grabs the title and summary for you.
- NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Very nice :)
- LVsFINEST, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10You FF haters!!! You know who I'm talking about, the damn people giving everybody a thumbs down. I command you to give me a thumbs up!
- registereduserg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5installed today ! thank you ! very handy. running 2.0 beta 1 and installed without using nightly tester tools.
Alt + D ?
heck,i've got Webkey shortcut set for Digg using that, lol. - Veretax, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5I suspect that what has really been happening is that the article in question was a dup, and when one person points it out the modding down wave begins.
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5I want a Firefox extension that will remove all dupes from Digg so I can just see the new stuff and not the stuff posted 10 times in the last 48 hours.
At which point, one could probably get through reading the new Diggs in a few minutes and get back to real work more quickly. -

The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
