WordPress 2.6 "Tyner" Released
wordpress.org — WordPress 2.6 contains a number of new features that make WordPress a more powerful CMS: you can now track changes to every post and page and easily post from wherever you are on the web, plus there are dozens of incremental improvements to the features introduced in version 2.5.
- 1598 diggs
- digg it
- learnseolive, on 07/15/2008, -1/+67I can't believe that 2.6 is out already it seems like I just upgraded to 2.5.
- Viper007Bond, on 07/15/2008, -0/+14March 29th, so a little under 3 months ago.
- DD32, on 07/15/2008, -1/+10Ah, But that really depends on how long people leave it to upgrade :P Not all of us Jump ship straight away... (Says he who runs trunk svn'd up every few days)
- brundlefly76, on 07/15/2008, -3/+3I cant believe how great the new 2.6 features are - how many years it took before Wordpress had wordcount and image captions ???
Press this and gears look very useful also - will save some cutting and pasting. - HigherLogic, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2I wish WordPress had an upgrade manager. If anyone's ever used Magento (an open source ecommerce app), that's a good system to model an upgrade feature off of. You do it all from the backend with a PEAR-like system, and all third-party (and first-party) extensions are handled through here as well. Makes staying up to date so much easier.
WP is great, but I'll stick with CI or EE.- presidentnixon, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Yeah, this is my one WP complaint. Love it otherwise.
- presidentnixon, on 07/15/2008, -3/+0Yeah, this is my only WP complaint. I love it otherwise.
- MichDdot, on 07/15/2008, -3/+29i am so happy with 2.6 it's great, and im amazed at how fast beta became full. you guys will love the little extras they finally have in it
- fredclown, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Finally ... full SSL support and the ability to force it. I mean seriously this is 2008 ... security!
- photomatt, on 07/15/2008, -1/+26See if you guys can find the Easter egg. :)
- tastethevenom, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5FOUND IT! Hint: You'll find it playing around with one of the new features (or a diff. method...). ;) I deserve a free WordPress t-shirt.
- photomatt, on 07/15/2008, -0/+27The first person to find it was a guy in Germany (a Textpattern developer, actually) and we already sent him a gift pack. :)
- chrisbaskind, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6Yeah, that was fun, Morpheus. Matt, 2.6 is quite good. thanks.
- acetous, on 07/15/2008, -3/+1Really love this "feature"... :D
- Archon810, on 07/15/2008, -0/+12For the lazy (or not affording to spend time looking but still curious, like me): http://hotbiscuits.wordpress.com/2008/07/13/amazin ...
- sweetBeats, on 07/15/2008, -1/+6Hey! Thats my blog! Awesome. :)
- psysop, on 07/15/2008, -4/+2Hint: it's in my pants
- knxdt, on 07/15/2008, -7/+2Nice !!!, finally this latest version, I just want to try it.
- arobar, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1"Finally"? WP2.5 was released around 3 months ago, that's a pretty shot wait for a new release.
- biznickman, on 07/15/2008, -1/+6Definitely looking forward to upgrading. When is BuddyPress going to be integrated? :)
- redwallhp, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3It's *not*. BuddyPress is a different spin-off. It's not going in the main release. Most bloggers don't want the extra junk added. It's being developed similarly to WPMU, they take the latest WP release and merge their added features with it.
- samuel514, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5Definitly a great release with few bug correction from the 2.5, definitly looking for an upgrade :)
- lopertyur, on 07/15/2008, -5/+0GREAT....!!!
- LeeDoyle, on 07/15/2008, -5/+2Follow the white rabbit!
I love the easter egg! - danfef, on 07/15/2008, -5/+1rabbit? where? go go wp
- foremire, on 07/15/2008, -6/+0Come on, wordpress^_^
- blackdude, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1-_-
- naturo, on 07/15/2008, -16/+3Wordpress 2.6 is excellent. Looks like an upgrade of 2.5
- prattmic, on 07/15/2008, -0/+8It is...
- flamingduck, on 07/15/2008, -0/+10Thanks Captain Obvious
- ptz0n, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2Amazing work! Time to upgrade :)
- asxy, on 07/15/2008, -1/+7thanks to developers
- ksaad, on 07/15/2008, -2/+2Not being a party crasher, but it seems that I'm not able to login anymore, although I've reset my password 3 times so far, and no luck!
- doorlight, on 07/15/2008, -2/+2OMG RLY?
- ksaad, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2Which is weird, I just upgraded to 2.5 about a few days ago, so what could possibly change in this release? I'd say nothing, the new WordPress has a different point of view! Any ideas?
- ksaad, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2Well, never mind. Patched it! :D
- aldaden, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I got locked out of one of my blogs as well. Got back in after deleting my old cookies.
- flamingsole, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1You can also visit http://yoursite.com/wp-login.php?action=logout and then log in again, if you don't want to clear your cookies/don't have a nice cookie manager.
- doorlight, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2At last, the plugins and the radio buttons! :P
- theadvinci, on 07/15/2008, -1/+10I always wait some time until I upgrade WordPress, because this way I won't have to deal with bugs that have no solutions yet. If 2.5 was good enough for me until now... then it will be good enough for a few more weeks.
- anthonymcg, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5Good stuff. Going to install it this evening. I like the Gears support.
- halukakin, on 07/15/2008, -0/+8Wow. What's happenning to Wordpress? These are awesome developments with great speed.
- roamzero, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Probably the the millions upon millions that venture capitalists poured into WP.
- alexleonard, on 07/15/2008, -0/+8Absolutely fantastic news. They're going from strength to strength. I love it!
- simplykir, on 07/15/2008, -2/+0Great News! Time to upgrade.
Thanks to developers! - clin003, on 07/15/2008, -2/+0it is good ,so i like
- awflasher, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6Cong!
The Google Gears involving really speed up WP - hbixler03, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2LOVE it! :)
- loveisfan, on 07/15/2008, -2/+1omg I just upgraded my wp blog to 2.5.1 8-)
- cspiegl, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1Just upgraded my blog too, just love the new features:D
- heysuburbia, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Good Stuff, I can really use the revisions option. I can't wait for the wordpress iPhone app to be done! Now we just need copy/paste on the iPhone
- loconet, on 07/15/2008, -3/+3great but now.... what I would like to see is for them to bring the upgrade procedure to the year 2008. I shouldn't have to manually copy files, etc.
- lalindsey, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1Name a CMS where you don't have to manually upload things when upgrading to a new version... nearly all of them that I have used require this.
- arobar, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2Be that as it may, these guys are ahead of the curve on a lot of things. Most CMS software packages require a lot more manual work for the install, WP has a single click. I would love to have the same ability for an upgrade (give it the new version package via a file browser, and let it extract and move the files for you... With rollback ability in case something goes wrong).
- nemock, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1"We're no better or worse than other stuff out there" is not exactly an excuse for lack of innovation.
However, the upgrade process is easy enough even if you have to do it manually that it shouldn't cause problems for most people.
- bradkovach, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3There are plugins that do this. I'm sure they don't do it, because it may create a security hole for users--with file permissions being open on the servers.
- kevinzak21, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2Dude, use SVN. One quick SSH command and everything is upgraded in seconds. I actually prefer this to an automatic updates or even an update manager inside Wordpress. I can upgrade five different blogs in a manner of seconds by just connecting to different hosts, pressing the "up" key, and then enter. :D Not to mention that you don't have to use risky file permissions or unwanted access.
- nemock, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1I sort of agree and yet there are plugins that can do this anyway.
I do like the semi-automatic plug in upgrade management in WP now. That's pretty sweet.
Having WP upgrade itself though...a little scary. I prefer the SVN route.
- lalindsey, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1Name a CMS where you don't have to manually upload things when upgrading to a new version... nearly all of them that I have used require this.
- hadak, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7Let's just...make a quick backup before overwriting all my files...
- AgentPeay, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7I had the most incredible experience last night as I was trying to fix video upload issues with 2.5.1. I tinkered with php.ini and .htaccess and permissions for an hour or so, and scrolled back to my wget for latest.tar.gz and pulled a new copy down to refresh (and check my md5).. and to my surprise I suddenly had 2.6. I have never experienced an "instant" upstream fix... now i want more.
- tinnoi, on 07/15/2008, -3/+0very cool i love it.
it's good.
2.6 is better than 2.5.1 - SniperZero, on 07/15/2008, -0/+11Just remember wp-cache :). Or else the digg effect will get you.
- MtheoryX, on 07/15/2008, -0/+8That's assuming you have any content worth digging on your site. I know I never do.
- bradkovach, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3You probably do have great content, but do to the hierarchy of Digg, we'll never see it. Take the easy road: Reddit.com I get massive response when I submit my content there.
I don't use wp-cache. It's a lightweight caching plugin. wp-super-cache and 1blogcacher are MUCH better. They ease the traffic burdens much much better.
- bradkovach, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3You probably do have great content, but do to the hierarchy of Digg, we'll never see it. Take the easy road: Reddit.com I get massive response when I submit my content there.
- nemock, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1And while you're at it, add WP Super Cache. I think it provides more usable stats that Analytics and the interface is added to your dashboard. Great plugin.
- MtheoryX, on 07/15/2008, -0/+8That's assuming you have any content worth digging on your site. I know I never do.
- Carlix, on 07/15/2008, -1/+14I love the word count feature!

me Pe ereevivws - Nightfall, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5When I switched from Livejournal to Wordpress, I was hesitant. However, after trying out Blogger and a host of other blogging sites and installations, I was desperate to find something that was easy and had a ton of features. That was over a year and a half ago. Today, Wordpress on my site is just awesome. I love the plugins. I love the themes. Best of all, I love the community. This new version is just another step in the way that Wordpress continues to evolve.
- moryabdi, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6upgraded in 5 minute :D no problem :) thanks wordpress
- dayofthelords, on 07/15/2008, -3/+3You may all wish to read this SSL/cookie security implications:
http://boren.nu/archives/2008/07/14/ssl-and-cookie ... - Verz, on 07/15/2008, -2/+3Hmm.. any alternatives that don't use a MySQL database?
- Stemp, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4Serendipity : http://www.s9y.org/
- arobar, on 07/15/2008, -3/+8I hear newspapers are still based on the print-and-distribute method instead of live calls to a DB. Could be just a myth though, it's a been a long time since I've seen one of those.
- NoMoreNinj4s, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6Moveable Type was open sourced a little while back and that supports SQLite, as does Habari.

- SuperMario290, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1Man, that's pretty amazing. I guess I've got to update all my sites now! :D
- mayanks098, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Now i have a work to do,update my Wordpress 2.5.1 to 2.5.6.
"Wordpress automatic update plugin" FTW - mediaroots, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4There seems to be an issue with upgrading whereby it sets a loop that keeps saying 'please login again' and it keeps going round and round. This is an issue to do with having a cookie from a previous version. To solve this, clear your cookies and you'll be able to log in fine. This fixes the issue that ksaadksaad refers to.
- loungie, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2thanx .. u saved my life... :P
deleted the cookies nd was able to login... - Dolemite, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Actually this bug still exists for people who don't install their wordpress in the root of their website:

- loungie, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2thanx .. u saved my life... :P
- CoMpUtErITGuY, on 07/15/2008, -3/+2OMG!!!!!!! Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- MalDON, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1The wordpress developers are simply amazing. However, some of the ways whey went about implementing things on the backend makes me shake my head. But it works, so I really can't complain.
- MtheoryX, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Care to detail that a bit? I'm genuinely curious what, specifically, bothers you.
- MalDON, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1It's more in the template engine side of things.
I actually looked into this further this morning while working on a project, and realized that it isn't the template system that's the problem, just the lack of streamlined documentation.
But if you want to know what exactly bugs me about the template engine, it's the fact that the functions echo out text. It's not very flexible. However, you can access the classes and get the information that way. Again, that would be where the documentation is lacking.
- MalDON, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1It's more in the template engine side of things.
- MtheoryX, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Care to detail that a bit? I'm genuinely curious what, specifically, bothers you.
- inetiatic, on 07/15/2008, -2/+1I have loved Wordpress for awhile. Delicious.
- tafsa, on 07/15/2008, -2/+1This is REAL cool!
- Nitesmoke, on 07/15/2008, -10/+3My wordpress site took no time to make. I just made it and I get a good amount of traffic, but I spend a lot of time looking for cool things to add to it. It is much better than the other sites I've had. http://nitesmoke.wordpress.com/
- MtheoryX, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1If you're trying to get traffic from digg, this ^^ is NOT the way to do it.
- Nitesmoke, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1not really trying to get digg traffic, i get over 1000 hits per day, just adding the link to what I was talking about like I always do, unless Im not allowed to do it if its my site.
- MtheoryX, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1If you're trying to get traffic from digg, this ^^ is NOT the way to do it.
- Yajairav, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I'm way behind on things here; I've been using WP version 2.0.6 forever (obviously) now and wanted to know: can I upgrade to 2.6 from that version or do I have to take additional steps?
- LiquidRetro, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2You should be able to upgrade straight to the new version. I did that a few versions ago.
- Yajairav, on 07/15/2008, -0/+0Great, thank you so much for the reply ^_^!
- nemock, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1It should work ok, but you might want to make a backup of your tables and have a list of your categories from your taxonomy table. As least a couple of people had their category lists "go NUL" during the upgrade. It's easy enough to fix if it happens and there doesn't seem to be much traffic on the web about it, so it seems to be a pretty rare thing.
- tikistyle, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Now all i need is Expression Engine 2.0....
- MtheoryX, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Amen!! WTF is taking so long here?
- mileswj, on 07/15/2008, -5/+2Its obvious you all know nothing of coding.
Most of WP backend is *****.- ShustOne, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5Wow, that was really constructive. I like how you have examples to show us what you mean. What's cool too is that you didn't just criticize, you gave us evidence as to why your argument is valid. And you totally didn't attack us! You truly are an amazing commenter.
- fLUx1337, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Its awful because its barely OOP. I'm sure for somebody who has worked on it since the beginning knows everything about it, but for somebody trying to add/fix/update something, or even just create a plugin, your lost, hunting down functions all over the place.
On top of that a lot of the functions it has cant be used because if you do it will mess up the data used further down the page - i.e. the post fetch function, if you use it as it is meant to be used on a page with other posts (in a loop), it will mess up the rest of the posts order, or even remove the post id you used above. Hard to explain.
What it needs is a complete rewrite, it literally is a jumble mess of code at the moment and the reason why I ditched it. But the front end is nice and it works well.
- stealthc, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2But it works.
- epleasures, on 07/15/2008, -0/+0I am considering WordPress and would appreciate hearing what concerns you have encountered. If WordPress is not as good as they say perhaps I will change my mind?
- iluvhatemail, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1you are completely, 100% right! I am editing a site at work that was built in wordpress and what a pile of *****. I'd rather rewrite the site than have to fix these issues.
- kevinzak21, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Wow, way to generalize in a community originally consisting of web developers that we don't know anything about web development. WordPress' development team made some unique choices, but it is hardly *****. If they intended the back end for heavy customization, you *might* have a valid point. It is not as easy to change the way it inherently works as it should be. From what I've read, however, the developers aren't trying to offer it as a customizable backend. They're making it work as fluently and streamlined as possible the way they designed it.
Anyways, in case you're too lazy to read all that, I'll summarize: go suck a *****. - nemock, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1I just get goose bumps when I get to hear from the super-developers telling us some other code is "*****."
Ok....so write your own and put it out there.
- ShustOne, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5Wow, that was really constructive. I like how you have examples to show us what you mean. What's cool too is that you didn't just criticize, you gave us evidence as to why your argument is valid. And you totally didn't attack us! You truly are an amazing commenter.
- jargonaut, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3I think this means it's time for me to upgrade to 2.5 . . .
- captscott, on 07/15/2008, -3/+3I've upgraded - works fine for me. No problems so far. http://leftpeg.co.uk.
