WordPress.com adds suspport for Digg buttons
wordpress.com — Now all blogs hosted by WordPress.com can have a javascript Digg voting button. "On most normal websites the rush of traffic can cause problems, but on WordPress.com you’re 100% Digg-proof." I guess we'll see?
- 1759 diggs
- digg it
- photomatt, on 10/24/2007, -0/+51Note to self: spell check.
- danglerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18"Have you ever heard of digg?"
No....hmmm - fkr2, on 10/12/2007, -19/+5Note to self: setup petition to have digg block wordpress.com.
- palmer, on 10/12/2007, -20/+9Note to all:
Bury any posts from a site that's sucking up to viewers with a "Digg this!" button.
The point is that you find something interesting enough to bother posting it, not that some spammy blog pleads, "ME ME, pick ME!" - jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10great... here comes the spam.
- jasnmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"Bury any posts from a site that's sucking up to viewers with a "Digg this!" button."
You would be blocking a lot of high quality large sites too then. - spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Blog posts aren't bad if they present original content.
Unfortunately, 99% of stuff from blog (and blog-like) sites are merely paraphrase/click-through adsense spam. This not only adds to the millions of dupes out there, but also presents a very cursory overview of the actual material. Please link to the source, folks.
Personally, I think Digg should update its submission code to do source link detection and have another warning screen to the user regarding that. - photomatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15We're very aggressive about keeping splogs off of WordPress.com, if you ever see one just use the anonymous contact form linked in the footer and someone will look at it within minutes.
- jwyles, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I seriously see nothing positive to come from this... Not just SPAM blogs (splogs as photomatt puts it) but also a ton of secondary information being submitted from some lame blog when the original article should be linked.
- krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -5/+2it's a psychological concept that the misspelling attracts your eye if you are educated. since most of digg is comprised of computer geeks, most are attracted to it like a moth to a flame. hence, marked as lame. there's a reason why we don't watch regular tv news.
- daxsymbiont, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5good for them.
btw. i nivir mispil - treseks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@frank...
it says, "note to self" not "note to the author"... the title says "suspport" instead of support. - psilanthropist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Right, I'm going to abuse the comment system to say something of vital importance. there is a difference between wordpress.COM and a blog hosted somewhere that uses the wordpress blogging software. wordpress.com is similar to blogger with preconfigured and hosted free blogs.
THEY NEVER GO DOWN. yeah thats a challenge. go ahead, try it. I have a wordpress.com blog and have been dugg 3-4 times. Never went down.
This is actually very good for digg as wordpress.COM is the only blogging service out there which does NOT allow Ads. And is very strict in its elimination of splogs.
- danglerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18"Have you ever heard of digg?"
- cpoteet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31100% Digg proof? That sounds pretty sure. I bet some diggers would want to challenge that.
- shifty2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11if you are willing to shell out $250/month in hosting, then yes, they claim to be digg proof.
http://wordpress.com/vip-hosting/
scroll down to the bottom...
think about it... free hosting thats digg proof? - wcasey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I'm pretty sure the "Digg support" button submits the page to digg then just crashes your site automatically to save time.
- photomatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Our free hosting is on the same grid (hundreds of servers) that our VIPs are, so whether you're free or VIP your site still won't ever go down due to increased traffic. When Anousheh Ansari went to space her blog was on WP.com, and it got Dugg, Slashdotted, BBCed, Farked, and Yahooed within hours of each other, it was fine.
- jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4I think wordpress error is the most common error on digg. And it usually appears around a mere 100 diggs or so.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1@ photomat
I understand that you work for Wordpress, but that's just ridiculous. The Wordpress database error is the most common error on Digg, and it happens ALL THE TIME. - ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9nreynolds, you seem to have difficulty distinguishing between WordPress (the open source blogging platform) and WordPress.com, the blog hosting solution. The WP database error pages we've seen from dugg pages do not ever come from wp.com.
- analytik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Uhm, have you ever heard of Scobleizer? Which got dugg (and everything else) couple of times? Hosted on wordpress.com. And I've never had any trouble accessing any blog there.
Come on people, do you really think that few thousands requests can put whole wp.com server farm down? Think again.
- shifty2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11if you are willing to shell out $250/month in hosting, then yes, they claim to be digg proof.
- kosso, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Oddly enough, today was the first time I ever added a 'Digg This' link to a story I had posted (someone else had 'dugg' it)
Then I see this new feature!
Hurrah!
Tomorrow, I shall be trying to add iframes and embed Flash ;) *nudge* - pwallroth, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2I liiikeeeee. My wife, shes dead......
- TheDude77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How nice for you?
- zachblume, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1eh?
- k8cpa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Formatting is a little weird... might be my theme I'm using too.
- maxxx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I have been waiting for this for a long time now.
This is one hellofa feature from WordPress.com.
Thanks! - brentroos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Nice feature. Glad Matt has added this.
- k8cpa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ooops it ate my code...

if you add this code above, the button will go all the way to the left. Problem is, you cannot wrap the text around it... :( I'm sure they'll figure out something - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23In other news, Titanic.com claims complete immunity from the Icb3rg.ahead trojan, and dares the creators of said malware to try and bring them down.
- TheDude77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Classic
- politech, on 10/12/2007, -13/+7Digg Buttons = Blog Spam
Thus instant burial by the army of anti-blog diggers. - mikefitz2, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3awesome, now we can get more worthless blogs thrown in our face!
- samster, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1Instead of implementing arbitrary code can they not fix the fact that Wordpress enabled sites just cant handle sudden increases in traffic? Any Wordpress site getting on the front page of Digg is dead within minutes. *sigh*
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Don't confuse WordPress.ORG (the software you can download to host your own blog) with WordPress.COM (the multi-user site where anybody can setup a blog).
- hipnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13That's not necessarily true. The reason you see so many dead Wordpress sites is that Wordpress is popular, not that it's inherently flawed. The real culprit is generally poor hosting plans. People are on shared servers that can't handle the traffic. But your average Joe also can't afford to pay $150 a month on his hobby site just in case he happens to get Dugg or Farked, or Slashdotted, etc.
Configure Wordpress with some intelligent caching options on a decent host and it does fine. - cavemonkey50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The problem is hosting. For every down WordPress site there are which survived it. You just don't know most of the time since WordPress is meant to be transparent. I know my blog has been on Digg several times and each time I survived. You just have to purchase good hosting if you care about your site, not some crappy shared plan.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Don't confuse WordPress.ORG (the software you can download to host your own blog) with WordPress.COM (the multi-user site where anybody can setup a blog).
- forchilli, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1i LOVE IT!!! ive integrated it as we speak! zakkforchilli.wordpress.com
- quacker912, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Who cares? Right when a WordPress page gets on digg front page, it will go down...like always.
- elfn, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2This is a sad day for Digg
- CoffeeandTV, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Turkeybacon: Turkey or Bacon?
- toprank, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Adding digg button support to WP is just going to fill digg with more stories that won't matter to digg users.
- bigern75, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1wth am I missing. It doesnt work with 2.2 :(
- bigern75, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1http://sandlot.info/ see, it doesnt work
- ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Did you miss the part where this is implemented in WordPress.com?
- hakomasong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The amount of negativity is here is ridiculous. Wordpress.com users couldn't put digg buttons on their posts at all prior to this. Now if someone wants to, they can copy a bit of code and insert it into the post. This is good for Digg - more than 700k blogs worth of mostly original content can now be dugg. ...WP.com is not full of spammers - in fact I've never seen a single spammer using the service.
- jschuur, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It doesn't look like this was impossible until now. Adding a Digg button is pretty straightforward with only a snippet of JavaScript:
http://www.digg.com/tools/integrate
Was Wordpress.com stripping out JavaScript from postings before? I know this new method makes it seem a little easier, but with the Digg tools, you don't have to submit your own site, or know the URL ahead of time. - jschuur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The real issue is requiring you to submit something before you can add the button. That is going to drive up the number of upcoming stories.
At least it's not a simple 'Make this story diggable' checkbox, which (shameless self promotion), I implemented on my own blog using Movable Type and the RightFields plugin:
http://dearest.cope.rnic.us/2007/02/11/selectively-add-digg-buttons - jasnmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Was Wordpress.com stripping out JavaScript from postings before?"
Yes - timthefoolman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There was no EASY way to do this. I had manually put DIGG buttons in my posts for a couple of weeks. It was a pain, and I was copy/pasting blocks of code to do it, but it worked. - Tim
- jschuur, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It doesn't look like this was impossible until now. Adding a Digg button is pretty straightforward with only a snippet of JavaScript:
- RevHelix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1shrug... WordPress... YO!! LISTEN UP!!!
Digg effect man, your stuff can't deal with it most days, don't exacerbate your weaknesses! - bookmarc, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1I wish our website got tested for the digg effect.
http://www.election-countdown.com - EdiciusTsaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Too many people don't realize there is a difference between WP COM and ORG....
Makes me think that perhaps for many people stupid Blog posts that just relink the source are difficult enough to read and understand...
And then this features is supposed to support Digg by making it easier for the readers of the goddamn Blog to digg the article that must be there before!! This is no auto-to-digg-posting utility
Besides: Lifehacker.com IS a Blog. It has some of those "Digg it" Buttons:
http://digg.com/software/Add_music_and_movies_to_your_iPod_from_any_computer_without_iTunes
1788 diggs after a little over 2 days can't be that crappy... - bigern75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5oh hell, why didnt i notice it was .com, crap
- kludwick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0In Soviet Russia, "support" is spelled with two "s"'s!
- slantyeyed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i wonder when they'll add this functionality for people who install wordpress on their own domains?
- EdiciusTsaf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Just install this plugin.
http://www.aviransplace.com/index.php/digg-this-wordpress-plugin/
And by the way, ever heard of google?
- EdiciusTsaf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Just install this plugin.
- LucidMovement, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Is there a way to check a blog to see if a host can handle this kind of traffic? I've had a little over 6400 uniques in a 24 hour period and it seemed to be fine, but I have no clue how that compares with something that has been Dugg. I use WP on Sherweb hosting (they host CG Channel and seem to have a good track record). I haven't had any issues so far but I would like to avoid them on the off chance I happen to do something Digg worthy.
- engtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wordpress.com is different than Wordpress. It's like Blogger.
and photomatt is the guy who created Wordpress. - engtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Do a google search for wp-cache.
There are plugin/techniques you can use to reduce the server load on the dugg page even if you are running self-hosted wordpress. - LucidMovement, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks for the tips. :)

Wordpress.com is really amazing.... - Oigen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is a very good thing, I've been eager to add this option to my readers.
- nickeoaddict, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0all righty cool.
- farlane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Cool Matt, now we can come to Digg more often and get abused - AWESOME!!
Kidding. Good job, you rock, WP rocks and every so often I post an original piece of content on WordPress.com ... and also on my blog using WordPress software. - laurensweet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very cool! WordPress is great ... thank you Matt!
- haishor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0i've tried, and i've failed...
sigh...
:( - gettothechoppa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OK, this feature completely rocks.
- solzeyejewels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I actually moved my blog The Church of The Great Oval, from blogger to wordpress recently because Blogger crashed on me so much when my traffic went up on the weekends, due to my weekly Astro Predictions on NASCAR races. I have also had tons of issues with blog thieves (sploggers) at Blogger.
I am not seeing near the copyright violations since I moved to wordpress. True, I won't say they are infallible, but they are very aggressive when you report a splogger. I am unbelievably happy with wordpress. I would like to have a little more creative liscence with my blog template, but it is saving me a ton of hassle.
