This deserted leper colony, surrounded by nature, has been a scene of death and catastrophe but also spirituality.
The story begins about 2,000 years ago. At the time, Chinese alchemists were searching for an elixir to make them immortal. What they found instead was a substance made up of potassium nitrate, charcoal and sulfur that burns at close to 10 feet per second: gunpowder.
Imagine being thousands of feet above the ground, passing through the clouds at a relatively gentle pace – floating as much as flying. This was the reality of air travel during the golden era of the great airships.
