France opens secret UFO files covering 50 years
breitbart.com — France became the 1st country to open its files on UFOs Thurs when the national space agency unveiled a website documenting more than 1,600 sightings spanning five decades. The online archives, which will be updated as new cases are reported, catalogues in minute detail cases ranging from the easily dismissed to a handful that continue to perplex.

- Xabora, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23This is going to hit www.abovetopsecret.com harder than a ton of bricks!
- bort901, on 10/12/2007, -5/+97That is just what they need, 1600 more blurry pictures.
- kevintvos, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1yea probably
- JakeX, on 10/12/2007, -12/+8I want to believe! :D
ahh.. X-files.. how I miss you... - boombye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Sorry France! We have the same crap too via FOIA. None of the stuff they released is any different from those released thru our FOIA requests, I think a country in South America released their reports too.
What we need is the "first country to confirm existence of extraterrestial entities" link on digg. - subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Brazil and Mexico. Some info has leaked out of Chile too.
- Matteos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18@bort901
"That is just what they need, 1600 more blurry pictures."
Not to mention the hundereds of thousands of documents with only a few lines of text with the rest blacked out. - randf, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5France surrenders to UFO nuts? Did someone threaten the gov't with a homemade light sabre?
- 3tcp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12All the conspiracy theorists will have to learn to speak French now, anyone who doesn't is a poser.
- cwshea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"The website itself -- which crashed host servers hours after it was unveiled due to heavy traffic -- is extremely well organized and complete, even including scanned copies of police reports."
It decided to resign itself to the digg affect in advance. - AegisGFX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3If there really were UFO's in france, they would have surrendered to them a long time ago...
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@bort901
"That is just what they need, 1600 more blurry pictures."
Actually, many cases seriously considered by governments are made by their own air forces. Sure, there's "blurry" gun camera shots, but also radar tracks and emf anomalies affecting aircraft instrumentation. Then there's the accounts of actual pilots of flybys, head-on near misses, and unknown objects pacing within visual range for hundreds of miles. I have read hundreds of these reports myself lent to me by someone in government. Don't take my word for it of course, but most capable govs. know a lot more than they're letting on. The widespread ridicule is just to keep the public's noses out of this issue. - Sep11insidejob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"That is just what they need, 1600 more blurry pictures."
How about the countless of radar hits. - sibbano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1On the website they actually investigate why the pictures are blurred, given some come from reliable sources. One theory is that the UFO emit some kind of waves that divert light, or something light that.
- datastorageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@marinist
If you think about it, most cases are probably easily explained by either meteorlogical phenomena or pyschological phenomena (by that I mean nutballs) But if only ONE case is an actual UFO (being a space craft from another planet) it would be the biggest story mankind has ever known.
Just one case being real is all that is needed. Think about that. - Wiinii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/03/23/0337237
- littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1France opens secret UFO files covering 50 years.
France's Server Crashes Forever.
France Surrenders .... Again. - marinist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@datastorageguy-
Yes, I've considered that--as have quite a few people much smarter than myself.
From what I've seen from my sources, I consider this phenomenon more widespread than commonly assumed--atmospheric anomalies and perceptual artifacts aside. Remember--reported sightings only comprise a small fraction of actual events.
That said, I don't see any reason to believe UFO are ET. Unless of course, one was conclusively proven so (and I don't mean "alien autopsy" videos"). The proof I'm thinking of is biology that is clearly not based on our common earth-based DNA, or perhaps metal objects with non-solar isotope ratios. Statistically, there are far too many credible, well-documented sightings to suggest alien visitations to me. I'm inclined to believe this phenomenon is more local in origin--which I think should first ruled out before the ET hypothesis.
- 12geeks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11 www.cnes-geipan.fr is given as the website that all the documents will be posted on. The site is not working as of yet, but it is registered by the Center National Space Studies.
- nmoline, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The site works it has just crashed due to overwhelming demand.
- Tallon29, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41It's a conspiracy!
- Prysorra, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I bet the UFO in Roswell crashed harder.
.....someone had to say it. - randf, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2hours later and it still doesn't work.
just like every other french idea, sounds good but has failed miserably. - the6thReplicant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@randf
wow this french hate is getting a bit stale
- Anigav, on 10/12/2007, -6/+101,600 sightings and none of them were spectacular enough for the mainstream media to popularize. They must be great
- loqqq, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41These days, everyone and their brother has a camera phone or a digital camera on the hip or purse -- also, news cams, street cams, web cams, sky cams, weather cams -- if there were UFO's we would've caught a clear picture by now.
- OnePunchMickey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Exactly. Yet still the aliens prefer to abduct scatty women on lonely country roads.
France opens up it's UFO sightings files! This must mean alien spacecraft exist! They want to reproduce! With Richard Basehart! - cracell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46Except that the aliens have developed better cloaking now then they used to have.
duh. - NuWinter920, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15A tremendous amount of picture and video evidence exists of UFO's, but that's not going to convince people who are inveterate skeptics. For them nothing short of a UFO landing on the White House lawn will suffice.
- Godel, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15Where are the pictures of plane crashes as they occur? We know those exist but there aren't any pictures of a plane crashing (other than 9/11).
- ophilye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@nuwinter:
ya right... the stupid Bush Administration probably planted that UFO there to distract us from something else... - jhnewt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@NuWinter
I find it funny how UFO conspiracy believers use the word "skeptic" to antagonize those who question their theories. Perhaps its not the skeptics that are being irrational, but rather the inveterately gullible. - acidhash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11If they can travel lightyears to get here, they probably can hide themselves, too.
By your logic, microceullular organisms don't exist. Virii don't exist. Atoms don't exist.
Just because you can't see something doesn't mean it isn't there. You'd make a good politician. - FromanylanD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Godel
"Where are the pictures of plane crashes as they occur? We know those exist but there aren't any pictures of a plane crashing (other than 9/11)."
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=plane+crash&search=Search - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3I've seen some UFOs. They were some lights in the sky about the size of a star you can see in the sky and they were flying about and turning at sharp angles. One of them appeared to be "swimming" (that is to say, imagine it accelerating, then slightly decelerating, then accelerating again kind of like swimming underwater) back and forth in a line. Anyone have an idea what they were?
I don't necessarily think they were space aliens, but I have no idea what these lights were. And why am I asking Diggers? Well...everyone's an expert on Digg. - OnePunchMickey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1> Where are the pictures of plane crashes as they occur? We know those exist but there aren't any pictures of a plane crashing (other than 9/11).
Go onto YouTube and search for 'plane crash'. I got 3,060 hits.
I never said that I don't believe in extraterrestrial life - obviously there is extraterrestrial life. They're just not flying around here. - jobigoud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@inbread,

Yes I have an idea : Superior Mirage.
That would be when there is a layer of hot air above a layer of cold air, and the difference makes light refract. Like mirror image on water surface but reversed.
In such a case, you could see what is hapenning on the ground reflected and reversed in the sky. Some boat crews have reported seeing the lights of a village even though it was hidden behind a hill on the coast line.
I found out about this studying meteorolgy, it struck me that all those reports of flying lights could actually be cars lights reflected.
- the6thReplicant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Plus the fact there are thousands of amateur astronomers going out night after night to observe the sky using everything from their naked eyes to huge telescopes. Yet these people, who actually know the difference between Venus or a funny looking cloud to an extraterrestrial faster than light vehicle, don't seem to see anything?
Yet everyone who doesn't know a thing about astronomy or weather patterns seems to see them all the time.
So this seems to rest on what your definition of "unidentified" means. The less you know, the more things are UFOs.
- OnePunchMickey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Exactly. Yet still the aliens prefer to abduct scatty women on lonely country roads.
- AllLitUp, on 10/12/2007, -12/+0Another mirror...:
http://photoslivehere.com/viewer.php?file=yzyynrtmxuimqgkgm2yn.jpg- J4320, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14ho hem jee! a blurry white image!
I definitely needed a mirror to see that! - tkonopkaz06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And just what the hell is that a picture of? It's blurry and no one knows what it is, so it must be a UFO.
- gabacho2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's unidentified, it's an object, it's quite possible it's flying. Looks like a UFO to me. (Note: doesn't mean alien)
- SabreWolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like a piece of dust on the lens that has been enlarged to about 100x.
- jimmah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1isn't that a cloud?
- J4320, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14ho hem jee! a blurry white image!
- monosyth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12There is video on CNN.com front page headlines right now of the previous Arizona governor talking about the phoenix sightings in 1997, and he is saying its true now... don't know how to provide the pop up link... sorry. very interesting though.
- bigiced, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I know the original French site is down right now, but until I see it....
Probably just a bunch of police reports and more conjecture than anything else. I doubt much hard proof such as video and imagery will be available. Besides...the Smoking Man would never let this happen for real.- billraydrums, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0And a whole lotta black ink lines.
- Gogara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm not sure it's completely relevant, but the Chilean military was involved in something similar. I'm pretty sure it was dugg, as well...

Can't find the digg, might not exist. - ThisBlows, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I had a terrific shot of aliens abducting Bigfoot but the mother ship zapped my flash card as it was departing at double reverse Watusi warp speed.
- randf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6now didn't i warn you about going out Bigfoot hunting without your tinfoil securely tightened?
- Agent06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I don't really care if there are aliens or not, but opening information to the public is definitely the right way to go.
I guess the French can do something right once in a while. - kaiser44, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3the french, they are so ah? french, I am surprised they would take time out of their night or day to even look up. that is so American to look up.
- ptom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Is it me, or has there been more talk, or dare I say... Chatter, about UFO's in the last two months then in the last 10 years? Has the media run out of things to get people worked up about? Maybe we need some more supermodels turned pill poppers turned dead to clear the air..
- OMightyColumbia, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2why hasnt anyone captured good ufo pictures in the past few years? everyone has a camera phone, and many have digital cameras with imagestabilizer with them at all times. why is everything still nasty and shaky and grainy footage, and never seen by everyday normal people? BECAUSE THERE HAVE BEEN NO UFO VISITS TO EARTH DUMDUMS. buried for being moronic.
- Hayaemsay, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Can you actually prove that UFOs don't exist?
- randf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9and can you prove the tooth fairy, leprechuans, unicorns, don't exist...or do you believe that too?
- yodaj007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You actually called people "dumdums"? Wow. Learn some better insults.
- Pureeviljester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lol dumdums.. that's rich
- omgwhataguy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Just like the French to release something like this. Now the terrorists will win.
- sibbano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0dont feed the troll
- nwoantibody, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I can't believe some people still think all UFO pics are fabricated by people to get attention.
- level, on 10/12/2007, -4/+74 words: The UFO Disclosure Project. Go to Youtube and you will hear some pretty amazing ***** from eyewitness testimonies. Probably the coolest is the base on the back side of the moon that has been reported by our own astronauts. I have always been skeptical but I am starting to believe there may be something to this ET *****.
- rathadak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree its about time people start waking up and realizing that we are not the only ones out there. For the most part people dont trust politicians farther than they can throw them yet we continue to swallow their "explanations" about ufo sightings and blaming them on things like planes and weather ballons. I think its time to wake up before they do land on the white house lawn!
- 3leggedHorse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Best UFO i ever seen click the download 1.5mg link at the bottom of the article .http://www.firstscience.com/home/articles/machines/aurora-secret-hypersonic-spyplane-page-4-1_1338.html

- haggie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Blogs are to news as Geraldo Rivera is to journalism.
As a side note, the blogs full of spam with no content have the fewest inaccuracies... - diggernaught, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hopefully this in addditon to the many UFO documnents that various contries have released recently is a start to the realization that we as a species are not at the center of the universe and there are many that we can learn from.
- Plinkotic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I want aliens to be real. I want it to be like Contact. And I want everyone to be disgusted and outraged and wage war on them.
Death to The David Morsians!
Anyway, yeah, I'm guessing if they do exist it'll be so far away we may only ever touch traces of each other. Think anyone'll ever get that golden disc we sent out into the stars in the Long Long Ago? We needed a giant Bender on there, so they'd know what the score was. - Plinkotic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Has that Alien Autopsy footage been discredited fully yet? Jonathan Frakes was the most alien part of that.
- Plinkotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can the US go after the Mooninites now? They have Oil, and a crazy Uncle, Cliff. They already attacked Boston maliciously. Hundreds were lost to the QuadGlacier. Eventually.
Anyone ever see that old Alien special on TLC with the groups' brains being stimulated electrically to produce similar, vague, 'Gray man visitations' right there in the chair? It seemed fairly old. - 4Ajax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7As an American I congratulate the French.
I only wish my government will be as forthcoming. This is information OWNED AND PAID FOR by the people, let the people have it!- sibbano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wish on my friend, Bush has buried more paper under the label top secret than any other administration. And you are WISHING for him to tell you what happened at Roswell?
I beleive there is a better chance chickens are flying those saucers rather than the current administration release any information
- sibbano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wish on my friend, Bush has buried more paper under the label top secret than any other administration. And you are WISHING for him to tell you what happened at Roswell?
- Lawrencetom, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Aliens are real. Proof ? Hillary Clinton is one.
- kaiser44, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6her ass is as big as a spaceship, I wonder if bill ever, no never mind.
- whiteninja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There are many copies....and they have a plan.
- caponumen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0So true.
You can clearly see the strap on anal probe marks........
- coditza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Evil Council are aliens. French aliens. From Morocco.
- gpaone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's all coming together now. Arizona's "lights" re-evaluated, France opening up these files, Tom Cruise's crazed ranting about Scientology....XENU is coming!!
- topace3000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2What's with all the UFO ***** on digg...
- dlaffoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The question whether or not "UFO"'s exist went out of date quite some time ago. The question is what exactly are they and what is their agenda. Anyone interested enough in this subject to study the works of prominent UFOlogists will find an answer.
I find it unsurprising that in this age of great knowledge that there are still people who will not take interest. Denial is one of the most predictable of human responses. - ReyX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Pictures or it didn't happen. Oh, wait...
- spammbunny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The gradual release of confidential documents pertaining to a top secret Exchange program of twelve U.S. Military personnel to a alien planet called SERPO, a planet of Zeta Reticuli star system, between 1965-78. http://www.serpo.org/

- petepetepete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I thought I saw a UFO in France once but it just turned out to be Gerard Depardieu.
- demonsofgoetia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now all we need is Wesley Crusher.. I mean Wil Wheaton to review the documents!
- spacebetween, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Amazing...
France has a Space Agency! - JrGhoull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you know...i would have no problem with the (united states) government, coming out and saying "well we've seen these things flashing around in the sky, and they're sure as hell not us,so that means theres life out there...only thing is we cant/havent had any contact with them, and know nothing about them" (unless of course they have had contact with them....i could understand it then because what if their technology was released to the public and wound up causing us to blow ourselves up) because what would confession do? make them look crazy? it would make them liars, and therefor a bit bad, but not crazy! and think of all the time and problems it could solve...i dunno its a big issue i guess...kudos to france for this
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Surprised no one else has said this yet...
UFO != alien space ship
UFO == unidentified flying object
It can be meteors, airforce testings, fireworks, old grannies flying through the air, etc. - Mattyohh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they probably don't release much of this incase it causes a panic. Oh and the church would have a fit.

- Beerduck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Probably have to do with the euro release of PS3, it being alien technology and all. Amongst those documents should be the manual for it so that people can finally understand what the hell that black thing really is. "Oooh so it's a gaming console and not a grill. Figures."

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Zr7wNQw12l8 - webist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK I didn't read any one else's comment, but I want to know: how many of these UFOs did the French surrender to?
- dudad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they exist, the even bigger questions are where do they come from and what are their motivations?
Perhaps they are aliens from another world hell bent on destroying our world once we actually become a threat.
Perhaps they are top secret government vehicles testing and spying.
Perhaps they are time travellers from the future making sure history goes as it should.
Perhaps it's even all of the above.
So.. let the arguments continue about whether they exist. Unless we can actually figure out the answer to those two questions, it probably doesn't matter what we believe because we can't do squat about it.
Digg is coming to a city (and computer) near you! Check out all the details on our
