      - I agree with most. This isn't going to do any good. Either rapists will check before hand (perhaps using his finger as a check and then removing the device) or taking the rape up the anal route. IF the rapist gets harmed by the device - the victim will probably be brutally beaten or killed.

      I don't know if the theory is that the rapist would be in so much pain that the victim could escape...

      From what I understand of rape - it's not a planned attack. It's spontaneous - and that also might eliminate the chances of them checking for the device.

Men don't like it because it's pretty barbaric, and no one enjoys the idea of sharp things in his or her junk. Playing the "sadistic bitches will use this on their innocent boyfriends!" angle allows them to object to its existence without siding with the rapists. Its creation builds on fears men have (justified or not) that women will falsely accuse them of rape. That alone is pretty horrific, but having some medieval device ensnared to your goods is too awful to consider.

      ALL forms of self defense can be abused. The reasons this thing inspires more hatred than, say, a gun, is a combination of the barbaric nature with the fact that it would be used primary by women on men. If it was a gender-neutral device, I doubt we'd be seeing such an outcry--it'd just be another weapon for rich paranoid weirdos and people who are at high risk of violence.

      Judgments regarding its practicality or ethical acceptability aside, I'm relieved I live in a society where a device like this would tie women down (like a chastity belt) rather than empower us. It speaks volumes about the status of women in South Africa that this device would even be thought up, much less used.
