10 hot Web redesigns of 2008
news.cnet.com — it's a good chance to take a look back at some of this year's redesigns and talk about what was changed and/or fixed.
- 1281 diggs
- digg it
- AmyVernon, on 09/19/2008, -10/+86I, for one, like the new facebook and LinkedIn
- MacBookForMe, on 09/20/2008, -4/+5I, for two(me and my Macbook), hate new Propeller, which thank Goodness hasn't been even mentioned:)
p.s.
but, I am seriously addicted to Digg and Friendfeed- melonhedd, on 09/21/2008, -0/+3What the ***** is Propeller?
- Giga, on 09/21/2008, -0/+2Why do we need to know that you have a Macbook? Buried for irrelevance.
- ReCkLeSsX, on 09/20/2008, -1/+9I literally just joined up Facebook the other day only to find a bunch of my friends boycotting because of the look. It's really not that bad, in my opinion.
- dizzythegreat, on 09/21/2008, -4/+6i LOVE the new Facebook. It's so intuitive and so much easier to use.
Little bitches who don't like it need to learn to deal with change, for crying out loud. It's so much easier. Fear of change is the reason Mac only has 10% of the market for PCs.- djbon2112, on 09/21/2008, -1/+7I dugg you up, then read your last sentence. Christ, macfags are just getting irritating.
- psaffire, on 09/21/2008, -1/+4No, macs being like a kids toy is the reason why it has 10% of market share.
- shoook, on 09/21/2008, -1/+7Meh, the new facebook design isn't really a step backward or forward...
- BrendanSheehan, on 09/21/2008, -0/+3Linked In? The website that is impossible to quit? Literally.
I had to threaten them with a lawsuit to get my account closed down. - snowblind113, on 09/21/2008, -2/+1Facebook should have remembered the wonderfully timeless quote "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Oh and give me the option for either version, old and new.
- mikeal321, on 09/21/2008, -0/+3The "Old Facebook" was starting to look old anyway, so I think the redesign is fine. Don't see what people are complaining about...
- MacBookForMe, on 09/20/2008, -4/+5I, for two(me and my Macbook), hate new Propeller, which thank Goodness hasn't been even mentioned:)
- NathanCH, on 09/20/2008, -9/+46MySpace Redesign? Yuck. Just as bad as the old one.
- evanct, on 09/20/2008, -2/+29all they redesigned was the front page. the profiles are still the hideous 1999-esque mess of tables.
because apparently BORDER="0" is just too much work. - CaviMike, on 09/20/2008, -2/+14The only good redesign will be its deletion.
- Ravatar, on 09/20/2008, -3/+2Nonsense, what they need is a toggle in the profile settings page.
"New Layout"
- Standards based, valid XHTML/CSS version of what they currently have.
"Old Layout"
- The mash of garbage currently in use
One week and an intern codemokney could make that happen. The benefits (in bandwidth and CPU) they could gain through proper caching and separation of presentation would be huge. As far as I know, they're still not even extracting user styles from the pages for caching, rather they're pushing those styles out with every page load. And when you look at the average myspace user's custom styles, they're these MASSIVE all-in-one libraries. - Daniel15, on 09/21/2008, -0/+3Ravatar, that's already done on MySpace China. But then again, MySpace China uses PHP instead of ASP.NET, and they have a box to enter CSS styles in.
No clue if those features will ever make it to the "normal" MySpace
- Ravatar, on 09/20/2008, -3/+2Nonsense, what they need is a toggle in the profile settings page.
- douglasr007, on 09/21/2008, -0/+5The MySpace redesign was simply "oh *****, let's look at Facebook's features and add them to ours and call it original"
- livestradamus, on 09/21/2008, -1/+2Y'all should be so proud.
I just closed my Myspace account last week.
It was well over due. - fjf314, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1... Does anyone even really care about MySpace anymore beyond listening to music?
- evanct, on 09/20/2008, -2/+29all they redesigned was the front page. the profiles are still the hideous 1999-esque mess of tables.
- toff72, on 09/20/2008, -2/+18strange, there is almost only social networking web site in this list
- roycifer, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4yeah this list looks like simply a compilation of tech blogs and social network sites... ALL of whom gone under face lift this year. lame list and lame blog post.
- Repaire, on 09/20/2008, -24/+21The LastFM redesign was horrible.
- bakagaigin, on 09/20/2008, -1/+5I miss my neighbors...
- fr0stbyte, on 09/21/2008, -0/+3It's still there, but as a tab on the left hand side of your profile.
- thankuvrylittle, on 09/20/2008, -4/+9I miss it being usable...
- jsreid, on 09/21/2008, -0/+10The design is ok... but the best part is the upgrades to the back end. No more waiting till sunday to see your charts update, it is all instant now.
- bakagaigin, on 09/20/2008, -1/+5I miss my neighbors...
- valleyvideo, on 09/20/2008, -1/+4The .Mac / MobileMe redesign is the most radical (and proportionally buggy) change on the list.
- Disjunto, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4technically not a redesign. just a new service, that took the place of the other.....
- volksport, on 09/20/2008, -2/+11I really enjoy the new look for Twitter
- techguru2006, on 09/20/2008, -1/+1LinkedIn doesn't look any different. I like Twitter's redesign the best.
- picpak, on 09/20/2008, -2/+51#1: Digg's comment system
- fjf314, on 09/21/2008, -0/+2It's a shame that I can only Digg you up once for this comment.
- llama5492, on 09/20/2008, -18/+9New Facebook Sucks. Digg Me Down.
- voodoochild461, on 09/20/2008, -6/+8it really does suck
- anononon, on 09/20/2008, -2/+3I agree.
- Ravatar, on 09/20/2008, -1/+8It doesn't suck, it's just different. Having everything so cleanly separated is brilliant.
- ZerawBanned, on 09/21/2008, -2/+4New or old, Facebook sucks.
Digg me up. - hmahadik, on 09/21/2008, -1/+3Change is good, and for *****'s sakes - ***** ADAPT
- voodoochild461, on 09/20/2008, -6/+8it really does suck
- johnquincysmith, on 09/20/2008, -8/+7 They must have not seen the million groups on Facebook demanding return of the old one... or else!
- biofusion, on 09/20/2008, -2/+28Am I the only one getting really sick of everybody complaining about the new Facebook? They never even list good reasons simply that they miss the oh so cool "bumper stickers" that were invading the page before.
- iofthestorm, on 09/20/2008, -0/+21Seriously, I love how the new facebook doesn't clutter up profile pages with crappy applications. They must be realizing that the majority of users are just resistant to change, and will learn to like it after some time.
- oli35, on 09/20/2008, -1/+9I really like the new Facebook. It's a lot cleaner, sleeker and a hell of a lot simpler than the old one. I despised the old design.
- AirRaven, on 09/20/2008, -1/+8My main qualm with the new Facebook design's the presentation of your own wall.
It's not a wall, for crying out loud- it's an action feed! Can't we get a simple list of comments?- Willnz0, on 09/20/2008, -1/+3Um, yes, you can. Click on Wall, click on Posts by Others.
- drakenlot, on 09/20/2008, -0/+6I love the new Facebook, and how I can now go to some of my friends' profiles and not have to wait an hour for a hundred ***** apps to load.
Plus, tabs are awesome.
Now if they let people choose what apps they want on their wall tab, I have iLike on there, but I wanted the Are You Normal one on there too.
Plus, either Google or Facebook have to get the site to properly work on Chrome, dunno who's problem that is. - thankuvrylittle, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1I actually just think they should just separate the mini-feed and the wall. And make the statuses the same size as everything else so it is better organized and regular looking.
- biofusion, on 09/20/2008, -2/+28Am I the only one getting really sick of everybody complaining about the new Facebook? They never even list good reasons simply that they miss the oh so cool "bumper stickers" that were invading the page before.
- Mootabolife, on 09/20/2008, -3/+32http://www.ninakatchadourian.com/uninvitedcollabor ...
Hawt web redesign. - vivvivtzz, on 09/20/2008, -5/+2nobody likes change
- Darkaged, on 09/20/2008, -0/+5nobody likes onions
- drakenlot, on 09/20/2008, -0/+5I like onions.
- Asianwaste, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2EVERYONE LOVES ONIONS!!!
especially in funyun form. - anononon, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1I like anchovies.
- Darkaged, on 09/20/2008, -0/+5nobody likes onions
- dealseeker, on 09/20/2008, -1/+11File this under Number One Of The Top Ten Stories That Don't Belong On The Front Page Of Anything
- nimnam, on 09/20/2008, -2/+5You should check out the new IGN.com redesign, it's pretty slick.
- magic6435, on 09/21/2008, -1/+2I cant stand it. the design is busy as all ***** its hard to concentrate on reading the reviews etc.
- AlanFang, on 09/20/2008, -1/+3I love how cnet is doing an article on web redesigns after their own design and redesign failures.
- AwwSchucks, on 09/20/2008, -11/+18do you like the new facebook? have a poll with my comment...digg up if you like and digg down if you don't.
- xParker, on 09/21/2008, -2/+7digg me up if your sick of people joining all these groups boycotting the new facebook. digg me down if your one of them.. http://bit.ly/q6iqc
- MavRevMatt, on 09/21/2008, -2/+8Digg me up if you're sick and tired of comments like this.
- emberjohn, on 09/20/2008, -4/+1Each of these designs have good and bad sides..
- Viquilax, on 09/21/2008, -0/+0Obvious statement is obvious.
- Go37Pi, on 09/20/2008, -2/+2Isn't it only september? Are the Christmas decorations coming up? or is it just a slow news day.....?
- jeffvvisoft, on 09/20/2008, -0/+10Yahoo! already has a better design, they just need to redirect Yahoo.com to:
http://search.yahoo.com- Mithivh, on 09/21/2008, -0/+3Agreed, but who uses Yahoo for search?
- douglasr007, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1no, who uses Yahoo is the better question
- riacirca1984, on 09/20/2008, -3/+1yahoo and digg are nice the rest are so ugly to me... just my opinion
- Paranoidmarvin, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3I do like the new Last.fm. Recommendations are a lot slicker
- Ikas, on 09/20/2008, -8/+3Facebook redesign hot?, do they even know how many people want to reject and go back to the old design. This article fails.
- Radan, on 09/20/2008, -0/+8If they instead were changing from the current design to the old design, there would be equally amount of people complaining. People don't like changes. It scares them.
- mitchellg100, on 09/20/2008, -0/+12Title correction: Popular Social Networks Who Had a Site Redesign
- melonhedd, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Popular?
- rivalius13, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4Would have been nice if they had pictures of the old designs to compare....
- Asianwaste, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1IGN got a new facelift as well. Less server queries... still a tad cluttered but all around superior to the former.
- mugeninfinity, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1gamespot had one as well.
- Asianwaste, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Not sure if the top portion (empty looking logo area) or the brownish color scheme bugs me... but it kinda looks ugly.
- mugeninfinity, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1gamespot had one as well.
- xjonnyx134, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4Fackbook making the list is funny just because of the mass criticism it has faced... though I like it.
MySpace = lipstick on a pig- fjf314, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Facebook could give users free money and they would face criticism for it. Facebook users just love to complain about anything, which in turn makes their complaints essentially meaningless. That's when the thousands of groups demanding to get the old version of something back every time the company makes a change never actually accomplish anything.
- pizzaguy01, on 09/20/2008, -5/+3buried because they said the facebook redesign was hot
- schavira, on 09/20/2008, -4/+2New Last.fm is actually pretty cool. It is uglier, I will admit, but the layout is 1000 times better, aside from it being hard to navigate to your friends.
New Facebook on the other hand... - WoodenKimono, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4Step one. Write a post mentioning something related to the multitude of social networking sites.
Step two. Submit post to social networking sites.
Step three. Watch traffic on your site and user driven ad revenue increase exponentially.
Step four. Cash check.- esfisher, on 09/21/2008, -0/+2That advice must be worth at least a thousand theoretical dollars.
- drakenlot, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3FTA: "Friendster... One of the most interesting aspects of the new look was that the company let any user who wanted to test it with the use of a special URL, then pushed out the look to everyone in less than a month. "
Sorry bud, but Facebook did the same damn thing about three (maybe more) months before they switched everyone over and gave the option of temporarily going back.
It wasn't advertised, but you could type in new.facebook.com yourself and use the redesign, sort of like a beta.
I was using the redesign about two months before my friends were forced to go there. - connieLingus, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1design, like art, is in the eye of the beholder...and who the hell cares what cnet says anymore?
- drakenlot, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1People hate new changes, I should know, I was told to redesign my company's site. I did four different layouts, and in a company meeting one was chosen to be the redesign.
Well, after pushing out the change, a couple customers came and complained about it, and since they are our biggest ones, we changed it back to the old one for now, until I can satisfy them.
The whole thing should've taken three months and is now going on seven. ***** customers don't like anything, yet my co-workers loved the first redesign, and are now just annoyed when I come up to them with another choice.- rossnyc, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Hire professionals.
- fearsofgun, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1myspace? are you serious?
- TaintBrush, on 09/21/2008, -3/+1I disliked every redesign listed. This "Web 2.0" design trend really sucks.
- creole, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1Yawn
- punkcat, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1dugg for using word the design to encompass more than just pretty graphics.
- DustinD, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1"hot" redesigns? these are horrible. (except a couple)
- asiarock, on 09/21/2008, -0/+6They missed out BBC.com, which was probably the biggest web redesign of 2008.
- sfradel, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1I agree on this BBC's redesign is very modern and practical.
- segrev, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1I love the picture of digg in the article-- almost all are indictments of McCain and Republicans.
- oda1, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1I like how that facebook screenshot has the guy's full name visible, and his inbox has 17 messages. He's so popular! I guess I'll add him!
- snowblind113, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1Facebook should have remembered the wonderfully timeless quote "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Oh and give me the option for either version, old and new.
- hinmanj, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Lol, CNET was an Honorable Mention on it's own list.
- theradical, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1The Yahoo "redesign" is almost precisely AOL.
- blueoceanpalm, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1My favorite redesigns are Twitter, Facebook and Delicious. Redesigns are inevitable and life is all about adaptation. I just wish people would stop whining about the new Facebook.
- cutiewithbooty, on 09/22/2008, -0/+0I'm a big fan of the new CNET look. The web seems to be branching off to both more simplistic looks and more looks with an excess of content (like Chinese websites). It will be interesting to see where this goes.
- StandardsGuy, on 09/23/2008, -0/+0Twitter. Nice redesign but why is such a simple layout done with tables?
- izaclick, on 10/06/2008, -0/+0"hot" redesigns? these are horrible. (except a couple)
