12 Secrets of Public Relations for Startups
techcrunch.com — Public Relations is experiencing a long overdue renaissance and its forcing PR stereotypes out from behind the curtain where they operated comfortably for far too many decades. It didn ’t begin this transformation because of Web 2.0 or the latest Social Media wave, but instead in the 90’s when the Web gained mass adoption.

- domfosnz, on 05/26/2008, -8/+3Yes, an excellent and informative article.
- billso, on 05/26/2008, -9/+2An excellent read about PR 2.0 or conversational PR... it's a two-way feed, and it takes more skill than some managers have.
- TheActionCombo, on 05/26/2008, -2/+21I stopped reading because "2.0" appeared everywhere.
- kinerry, on 05/26/2008, -4/+5stop mentioning "web 2.0" and we may actually finish your articles
- killdashnine, on 05/26/2008, -3/+2What's cooler is being a part of a start-up that DOESN'T follow these common-sense points about PR. When a company completely "goes without" PR, settling for word-of-mouth and thinking that people will just buy the product, you're doomed. In the case of this place, everyone was saying "wow, this product doesn't work". So much for that company!
- koobook, on 05/26/2008, -6/+0Yes
- melondoc, on 05/26/2008, -0/+12PR 2.0, in summary, includes hints such as: pick the right person to lead the PR effort, identify your target audience, research your contacts before reaching out, measure business results, get a spokesperson? Wow! The world of PR is being truly reinvented. I can't wait until Finance 2.0 teaches us that watching Cash Flow is important and that you should try to have more assets than liabilities.
- nascentia, on 05/26/2008, -3/+10This article is stupid. I got a degree in public relations and journalism, and this type of ***** was in Intro to PR. Anyone who knows even the tiniest bit about PR will know how creative you can be and that the goal actually isn't to spin and lie and just send out press releases.
For instance, the company that did the "All-Teal" campaign for the Jacksonville Jaguars in Altel Stadium (I went to college in St. Augustine, so this was local and we studied it) did a great job coming up with innovative ways to reach the entire city and get them involved, and as a result, they had an entire football stadium full of people involved in their campaign, all wearing teal to support it and the Jags.
This article sucks. - MissAttitude7, on 05/26/2008, -7/+2Great article. Should have been shorter though. It's hard to keep anyone's attention for that long. A tip that wasn't included.
- plopper, on 05/26/2008, -6/+2This article stinks and so do all the people who posted a comment before I did.
- Rikkochet, on 05/26/2008, -1/+9From this article, I have learned that PR 2.0 is just like PR except that it has a 2.0 beside it and you cater to bloggers instead of media correspondents.
- JonForTheWin, on 05/26/2008, -3/+2I also stopped reading because of "2.0" everywhere.
- Ducksa, on 05/26/2008, -2/+1What's up with these ***** comments?

I recommend posting to newer social news sites like http://www.subbmitt.com It's similar to Digg, but they essentially default to the queue, so all articles posted make the front page. Your article gets maximum exposure with less effort. This is next to impossible to do on digg or reddit anymore.
Also, forget about top bloggers unless you know them, because they get too many emails and you'll most likely get ignored.
Friends will only help you so much. Many of them won't help you at all, I know I've tried on a few ventures. You can't cut everyone into your business and many friends will ask "why should I help you get rich" ...unbelievable. PR is hard work for sure. Use press releases, email friends, be active in forums & social communities, don't forget offline stuff like business cards and marketing info. I use marketing cards with URL on them and just leave them everywhere I go. Put them in books & magazines at the book store, leave them in restaurants, clubs, etc.
Also THE most important thing you can do is build in a viral loop into your product or service. This is where user of your product or service MUST tell people about it and you automatically grow exponentially. Great examples are Hotmail,Ning, etc. - briansolis, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2Thanks for your feedback everybody. I've published the unedited version on my blog. Many of the cuts, while it made it shorter to read and friendlier for the TC community, lost a lot of context and ultimately some value...if you have the time, please read: http://www.briansolis.com/2008/05/pr-tips-for-star ...
- traderbillsales, on 05/26/2008, -0/+0Lot of social media networking to get you high in PR, everybody deserves that the idea came vary from different users. For example you need to get high PR, but mentioning web 2.0 is not necessary it will depend on the content that you will get from it.
- bananaman300, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1this article is poop, and therefor i'm just gona use it to helf me on digkiller. epic ***** mirror suck
- cfuse, on 05/27/2008, -1/+1PR is like HR, if it appears in a company then you know that the company is diseased. If you need to spin things, then you are doing it wrong.
- Kornstalx, on 05/27/2008, -1/+1I'm disappointed.
I thought the thumbnail was an upskirt. - michjeanty, on 05/29/2008, -0/+0PR is somewhat tricky, but I don't think it's a secret
