$5 = 55GB (web space) + 5TB (transfer) + 55 (domains)
site5.com — I stumbled upon this awesome deal while looking for a host today. Site5.com is offering 55 GB Webspace, 5 TB Bandwidth /m, 55 Domains, Unlimited mySQL, FTP, E-mail for $5! I currently use DreamHost.com, but this might be a reason to switch. What do you guys think?
- 106 diggs
- digg it
- mongeau, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The Ruby on Rails support is nice too; but, most decent hosts nowadays offer this anyways.
The only drawback I found is that you have to sign up for a years worth of service up front to get the deal. Still well worth the money for what you get...- ActiveMatx, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4This sounds too good to be true...
are the domains first level domains? IE: www.myname.com or are they second level:
IE: http://onedomain.myname.com
I will wait to see how good this is first. - Hayes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"are the domains first level domains? IE: www.myname.com or are they second level:"
It means how many domains you can host on the server. You don't actually get to register 55 domain names. - brandonr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9They're top level domains, but the deal is too good to be true. Site5 oversells like mad. I heard a few people say their server loads are unbelievably high.
You can read more about them on the webhosting talk forum (www.webhostingtalk.com)
EDIT: you have to pay 2 years in advance too. Otherwise it's 50 a month. - neoform, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2This sounds like a scam. A registrar has to pay $6/year to register a domain with ICANN.
- anthonyyeung, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27OMG! What a fantastic deal!!!!!!!!
*clicks link*
Oh.
Why would I host with a company that can't handle the digg effect? - shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5beware of these guys. Over at WebHosting Talk forums a lot of people were reporting their servers being hacked and Site5 blaming it all on the web developers instead of taking the time to fix their own mistake.
Anyway, shameless plug: http://www.nouptime.com/top-10-worst-hosts.php - Mardala, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Site5 has been around for a while as well. Its another of the well known web hosting companies. They distribute the load over many servers and offer these huge plans. Dreamhost does it. Media Temple does it. Site5 does it. Probably many others that do this as well. Its nothing but a marketing scheme for the greedy. If you seriously needed that much in resource you would never be able to host on a shared environment, even if its distributed around multiple servers. Never.
You are on a shared environment, so you are limited in things like CPU, number of threads, database connections, etc... So don't believe the hype. The fine print usually tells you what resources you actually get and its restrictive. I don't know why people fall for this anymore, but obviously it still works.
- ActiveMatx, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4This sounds too good to be true...
- NickRobinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2how is the customer care? anyone tried them before?
- Nerf, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3i use them and they are amazing very fast server good customer support good back end control service i recomnd
- techpimp, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8@nerf
I bet you work for them. Good job hyping your own company.
Buried as spam. - TheK, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4~nerf
You sir, are a tool. - ApplePenguin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you're concerned about support, check out Liquid Web. www.liquidweb.com.
- mongeau, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Solid so far. They assign you a representative that takes care of you while you get things set up.
- NickRobinson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1sounds great! [i was kind of planning to go with mediatemple's gridserver option. Now i would probably change my mind]
- NickRobinson, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1cant believe this is not getting dugg up!!! is there something cooler out there?
- dbuttry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Too good to be true??

What the hell is that? Why would anyone buy any of the higher packages?
I say it's a hoax.

- JustinMMcKay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Their site seems a touch slow?
- jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8digg effect... lol great a webhost that cant handle DIGG haha
- inotocracy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Be careful guys, just because it tastes sweet doesn't mean its good for you. I would rather pay a little bit extra for a well established hosting company than go with a new comer who could just skip out or become a huge hosting nightmare.
- bblink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude, these guys have been in the hosting biz since 1998. They are more than established among most hosts and they HAD a stellar reputation. It is only recently(past ~7 months) when the founders seem to discover how much $$ they can make through overselling that they turned south. Bad service, stellar support started to deteriorate FAST, high server loads, unstable servers, lies told by the server administrators. They seem to like the fact they can make a lot of $$ by offering these insane specials and overselling like mad.
- michaelczhang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14All the comments above this seem kinda shady?
- rhfb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7and it hit the frontpage kinda quickly...
I'd look into this more before spending any money. - mongeau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Shady??? Hmm... I've only ever submitted a few stories. I just thought I'd share. Take it or leave it man...
- rhfb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7and it hit the frontpage kinda quickly...
- TheIconoclast31, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm with inotocracy- proceed with caution.
Besides, any site that needs 5TG of bandwidth is probably better off purchasing its own dedicated server.- invader, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1great, cuz my site only needs like 4.75 TeraGigs......... (wtf??)
- FreeiPodGuy.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think they intend the offer for audiences that actually need 5TB or anything near it. The point of the 5TB offer is:
1. "We won't charge you based on bandwidth unless you're Leo LaPorte."
2. "We need something that has a '5' in it."
3. "'5' or even '55' is too low."
So, they land on 5TB and it gets the message across.
- xur217, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2BS, they will probably cancel your account before it gets anywhere close. I had an account with Dreamhost.com, and they canceled my account for using 300gb of bandwidth a month (I am allowed to use up to 2tb. Yeh...
- Four20, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3that happens when you're BW is used up in copyrighted video/audio
- Four20, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2a hosting company, that's many website can't even survive the digg effect
and you want me to give them money? and trust them with my content?- Tunguska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree. What use are they when their own page crumbles under server load?
- TheIconoclast31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hahahaha, this is worth an article of its own:
"Webhosting site offers 5TB of bandwidth and then crumbles to Digg Effect (R)."
- fac3less, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't jump too quick -- remember to do your research before sending any company your money.
http://www.hostjury.com- streaky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems a bit fishy to me, but like fac3less says, I'd check them out on a site like http://hostjury.com/ .. seems to have some useful info... Their site being sown would worry me more than slightly though.
- FragMeant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol the site wont even load for me... and yes I agree the first 5 or so comments do seem fishy... I am being overly suspicious though.
Like intocracy said, setting up a web host is pretty easy, so it definitely pays to seperate the cheap from the good - Unimaxium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Their site seems to be feeling the weight of the digg effect. Not a good sign...
- dicerandom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think you'll get stuck on a shared server with 500 other people and the thing will melt.
Edit: Hah, they're dugg. - HungSquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's less than the cost of electricity to run your own *nix box out of your house!
- benguild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The site is loading incredibly slow for me...I've tried numerous times to connect and it's not loading anything. Not a good sign at all.
- DigiMaso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Their site seems a touch slow?"
A touch is putting it very nicely.
Buried. - jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find it funny that they offer 5TB of bandwidth, yet their site is getting the digg effect. Actually it won't come up at all.
Thus I've concluded that the submitter is
a) an idiot or
b) working for the company
marked as spam - burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dreamhost is probably a better call, actually. They've been around for a while, and if you look around, you can find a promo code to give you $99 off.
I have 200GB, 2TB (I think), and I only paid $20 for the year. Next year will be $130. - val8ntin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In case anyone wants to know the catch - its quite simple. You have a very low maximum cpu usage. This means that at most you would be able to have roughly 50 connections at once.
Site5 has a very strict policy on this and they suspend accounts instantaneously. There is practically no way one could even approach that 5TB/month traffic level with less than 50 people one at once.
The only real use of this is for backup purposes. - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Marked as spam
- sorenb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wuah wuahh
- leanweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 they've been dugg already. i call bs.
- kenmantx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If we Dugg every webhost that offered a gazillion GB of storage and a bajillion TB of transfer, what good would it do? Nine times out of ten, they suck ass in customer service, technical support, and reliability, you know, the small things. They (the cheap hosting companies) usually have a bad habit of seriously over-crowding their servers.. how else can you offer service so cheap? You also have to give extra caution to sites that advertise such crazy deals at such a price because even though it's 2006, the saying still holds true "you get what you pay for".
It also goes without saying, but read plenty of reviews from places like webhostingtalk.com (or whatever else you can find via a good search engine). - iamshades, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0uhmm
WAY better deal here:
http://www.servage.net/?coupon=cust20051
based in Germany, but real quick servers, ive maxed at 600kb/s and avg around 300-400kb/s. i currently host 6 websites running strong. easy to use CP (made by servage) as well.
8 bucks a month gives you:
250GB space
2100GB xfer
Unlimited stuff.
Free setup and domain or xfer!
More space is added each day!
Tons of features!
Use this coupon for 25GB more space free (thats 275GB!)
http://www.servage.net/?coupon=shadedsystems
I also get 25GB free and 2months free when you use this coupon, it would be appreciated! - hongkongjapie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I guess you get what you pay for, but if you don't expect in service and stuff you can also try Servage [http://www.servage.net/?coupon=cust22558] for 7.50 with 250GB space and 2100GB/mo traffic. Above link includes my coupon that gives 25GB or so extra space.I believe you get 25GB extra or so with above coupon (referral code, gives me 2 months extra). What's great about Servage is that besides the massive storage and traffic you can get two months for every referral. For me that means that I've payed for one year but already got 56 months for free extra.
The quality? It works for me reasonably well, use it for a dozen websites, mailboxes with several GB in them and backup space. On forums however I've read people with not so good experiences, so if you want to host a business critical website maybe you should look further, otherwise you really can't go very wrong with Servage.
By the way, my servage fan site (need to get the referrals in some way, http://servage.ctrl-j.eu/).- iamshades, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0hey *****
i posted first so ***** off
dugg down cause i posted mine first *****. - hongkongjapie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@lamshades
Don't like to be called *****, to be ***** off and dick head (and that with only 3 sentences). Did it ever occur that _maybe_ our posts crossed? I must say I don't know why your post is modded way down and mine isn't yet, maybe you made a name in Digg for having a bad temper and calling people ***** when they come in your way?
Have a nice day,
Jaap - hongkongjapie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1(I know nobody cares but the last url should of course be http://servage.ctrl-j.eu/ ).
- shivaranjan18, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I also have a servage account but sadly it does not handle digg effect well.
- iamshades, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0hey *****
- thepolkapunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The official site for the hosting is down after less than 100 diggs. Obviously, they are not a professional web company if they can't even stand up to their own promotions.
- PsychoPNut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1...Everyone trying to make a buck. Seems like they would kill for it too. Crazy.
- sferda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Site5's staff is consummately professional and helpful, and their web hosting tools are very nice and well-thought-out. I wasn't too happy with their email services; my mail just seemed to get lost. But very good web hosting.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I got a refural code for Dreamhost and paid just over $100 for 2 years of service. I now have 200gb with 2TB/month of transfer that grows every month
That deal seems hard to beat - ajaydsouza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I haven't hosted with Site5 personally, however, one thing I know for sure is that it oversells. Also 55domains means support for 55 sites that you can host at once on your account.
besides the space and bandwidth, how much do you really need? Also, the main problem you may face is CPU usage if you have a very active website. - tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15TB == 5,368,709,120KB
2,592,000 seconds per month.
Using a 5TB in a month would require serving up an average of 2071KB/s (that's a hair over 2MB/s). For the entire month.
If you need that sort of bandwidth, a shared hosting solution at $5/mo is *not* for you, because unless you're doing nothing but serving up gobs of static content (and who does that these days?), they're probably going to nail you for CPU usage if your traffic is that high.
Anyone can oversell. Do yourself a favor and find a host that knows better. - superdoug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its too good to be true, they will be bust soon. Lets see how they handle the digg effect.
I use www.hostmonster.com - weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its pretty pointless, move a big site to them and you will blow up their server. This isn't a sustainable business model, so I wouldn't trust them.
