- drmobutu, on 12/31/2007, -40/+13Accident? Their PR people ought to get a clue: by not specifying what type of accident it was, it engenders speculation, not to mention the fact that the guy apparently died on the 27th, but it was not announced until Sunday, the 30th.
Also, check out the PR the company released: "Baidu Regretfully Announces Passing of Chief Financial Officer Shawn Wang", at Yahoo Finance...it's short on details, but the wording is interesting...."Regretfully"? Regret for what? Regret that by admitting that their CFO is dead, under possibly shady circumstances, that their stock might tank? How do investors know it wasn't suicide, or murder? Baidu's stock closed at just under $400/share, Friday...- atact88, on 12/31/2007, -4/+17way to be paranoid. the Chinese don't have the same command of the English language that we do. Their choice of words for expressing certain sentiments may not be as accurate as what we would use.
and the u.s.a. DID land on the moon, okay?- drmobutu, on 12/31/2007, -1/+2That is what translators are for...the guys is dead, from an unspecified "accident"...they're sending a message...
- noahhoward, on 12/31/2007, -2/+17Regretfully is a perfectly reasonable word to use, they liked him, he was a good leader, they regret his death.
regret: v. (feel sad about the loss or absence of)- drmobutu, on 12/31/2007, -2/+2Regret : verb, -gret·ted, -gret·ting, noun –verb (used with object)
1. to feel sorrow or remorse for (an act, fault, disappointment, etc.): He no sooner spoke than he regretted it.
2. to think of with a sense of loss: to regret one's vanished youth.
–noun
3. a sense of loss, disappointment, dissatisfaction, etc.
4. a feeling of sorrow or remorse for a fault, act, loss, disappointment, etc.
5. regrets, a polite, usually formal refusal of an invitation: I sent her my regrets.
6. a note expressing regret at one's inability to accept an invitation: I have had four acceptances and one regret.- noahhoward, on 12/31/2007, -1/+2Yes... and?
- 2oonhed, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1"and?".......when one is trapped by ones youth in a perverted mentality of sarcasm & irony, then words like "regret" & "accident" often seem to have the opposite meaning. Even though, in the real world of adults, the opposite meaning might only be inferred due to some actual evidence or admission of wrong doing and NOT just a general baseless assumption.
I think we can take the initial brief missive from China at face value, and I am sure there will be more information about it in the near future. Just because information is not IMMEDIATELY forthcoming, does not mean they are hiding anything. News from some countries routinely travels slower than it does in the west.

- Akraz, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2what the ***** is your problem? Why are you getting so pissed off and angry over a story cause it wasnt posted the ***** SECOND it happened?
Please go get angry at real things that really matter.
Pathetic lowlife. - 2oonhed, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2I think we can take the initial brief missive from China at face value, and I am sure there will be more information about it in the near future. - numberneal, on 12/31/2007, -21/+14if that stock sells off due to this, a lot of the nasdaq may go down with it tomorrow morning. bidu is one of the toughest stocks in the index. when bidu does well typically the rest of the index does well and vice versa.
- StealthMonkey, on 12/31/2007, -2/+6Why is this getting dugg down?
- Ryan2845, on 12/31/2007, -2/+5I'm wondering the same...Apparently I wasn't the only one who instantly went to check the stock ticker upon reading this news.
- HappyScrappy, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1For the poster having zero idea of the concept of causation versus correlation.
- 2oonhed, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1seem like a reasonable assumption to me. It should be no secret to players in the market that that index is very often driven by perception & psychology.

condolences to his family!- orlyfactor, on 12/31/2007, -9/+66I am sure the first thing his family did after learning of his death is rush to digg to view comments about it...
- vertinox, on 12/31/2007, -5/+10Family? How do we not know the guy was pure evil or his family hated his guts or he even had a family? We don't. Every time some one dies yet know one knows who they were or who their family was, some one comes out of the wood work on digg and says "THINK OF THE FAMILY!!!".
If Kim Jong Il dies tomorrow are you going to say "DON'T MAKE BAD COMMENTS! THINK OF HIS FAMILY!". Sheesh. The reason this is being reported on digg was because he was the CFO and not because he was a saint. Of course he might have been a swell guy, but its obviously suspicious that the guy died in odd circumstances and that Baidu covered up his death for a day or two before announcing it.
Yeah... Think of the families... Of the shareholders and employees who are going to get their hard earned money screwed because someone is playing them the fool over this guys death.- MacParrot, on 12/31/2007, -1/+4By the 145,987 blessed matyrs! Don't tell me Kim Jong II is sick too!
- orlyfactor, on 12/31/2007, -12/+29Yeah, an "accident".
- sstidman, on 12/31/2007, -5/+7Does EVERYTHING have to be a conspiracy these days? Maybe he just died in an accident?
- orlyfactor, on 12/31/2007, -1/+5Sarcasm is lost on you.
- freshyill, on 12/31/2007, -2/+12Well in China, lots of corporate types often die in accidents involving firing squads, so yes, it is possible that it was just an accident.
- CoolWind, on 12/31/2007, -0/+5it's a fond tradition...

- vertinox, on 12/31/2007, -5/+6If you know his family, why don't you send flowers instead of posting condolences on digg?
- keepinithamsta, on 12/31/2007, -11/+33This was an on job accident. He got stuck in the series of tubes that make up the internet, unfortunately they couldn't retrieve him in time.

- afritzse, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1I learn Chinese, so the second part of his statement were just condolences to his family in a nice language. (The first part I don't understand.) I agree English would have been the better choice on digg.

Yes, I'm a squash fan. Yes, there aren't many of us out there. A video of him playing at a recent masters level event:

The feeling's mutual- strictnein, on 01/01/2008, -1/+1The difference being that the front page of digg doesn't feature an article about something happening to "banmaster".
- SuminderJi, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Why would this NOT be frontpage Digg news?
Baidu owns Google in China. China is a huge market. Therefore Baidu is a huge player.
(I know Google and the Gov't are trying to work something out, until then - it still owns)
Refreshing from the Huckabee / Ron Paul PR propaganda atleast.
- 2oonhed, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1Baidu is the leading internet search engine in China. Sort of like Google only it's censored by the Chinese government.
try looking at http://www.baidu.com/
I do image searches with it sometimes, I don't read Chinese but image searches can be funny.
