ComicSpace: just like MySpace, only a million times better
comicspace.com — Let the numbers do the talking: by Dec 12th, exactly one week after launching, this site had over 4200 members and had served nearly a million pages. Every serious (and not so serious) webcomic creator is there, and some heavy-weight pros like Warren Ellis, Dave Gibbons, Steve Rude, Ed Brubaker and Jim Salicrup, among others are already there.

- lazydrumhead, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2no TPFD = no digg :(
- Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24They also eat bandwidth as well as brains, apparently :(
- jtorque, on 10/12/2007, -1/+87A million times zero is still zero :(
- pirana0, on 10/12/2007, -26/+2It's went down, down in an earlier round,
And Comics, we're going down digging,
I'll be your number two with a toilet,
A loaded Satan complex, ***** in and push it. - mrwiggl3s, on 10/12/2007, -29/+5Comicspace
A place for losers who wont get laid. Ever. - DeathBorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Then trolls like you should feel perfectly at home there, eh?
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Only a million times better if the site loads.
And how can this site compare to myspace if it's just another deviantart for cartoonists If this website is geared towards artists instead of musicians, wouldn't there be a social retard aspect of it where other idiots who aren't even talented can advertise their horrible personalities?
Waste of my time, bad description, and a selfish interpretation. Get out of here... - hypercrypt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Well, it is down, that already makes it better than MySpace ;)
- monsterdog, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1@mrwiggl3s
Hmm, wonder why I'm there if that's true.... I'm no loser, certainly (you apparently are, considering the cliched troll-attack.) As for getting laid...a lot. Maybe someday you'll find out what it's like to have sex. - soylentdean, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0That's one of the perks of being a zombie. Mostly we just mindlessly fill the gutters with color though.
-dean - codyg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@hypercrypt
couldn't have put it better myself :) - mattyxo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How is this a comic space when you can't even post your own comics? There's a "Coming Soon!..." message in everyone's 'comics' so I signed up to see if they just hadn't posted anything -... nope! The feature hasn't been implemented yet. For a comic sharing site... this is pretty useless.
- drathan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17All I have to say is that since joining up, the number of people watching my ghost animation videos (fableforge.org) has just gone way up, I've gotten to exchange messages with a couple comic celebs, and I'm starting to use the private message system in replacement of my sucky web based email (mostly because my office firewall doesnt block it)
Something webcomic creators are very very aware of, is that comments and feedback are an extremely scarce commodity out there. That alone, in my point of view, explains comicspace crazy one week growth. We're all looking for validation, and we're getting networking as a bonus. - stvsloan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I have to agree. I had a listing at Josh's onlinecomics.net, and I guess he did a "soft launch" for all the people registered there. I was one of the first Comicspace registrants. The traffic on my little webcomic (witchthorn.com) nearly doubled. But more to the point, I got several emails from people who enjoyed the strip, and I got to reconnect with people I know. Comicspace is a great idea and I hope Josh -- who, incidentallyy, I don't know at all -- makes a gazillion dollars off it.
- wonderdog, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Great site, and unlike MySpace, ComicSpace work!
Josh works hard on CS and it shows, from adding new features to moving to a dedicated server to handle the increased traffic, CS breathes fresh air into the online comic community. - PhoenyxBlade, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Definately a sweet site, I'm enjoying the site itself.
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Does not contain Penny Arcade, does not contain Schlock Mercenary....
"Every serious Webcomic creator is there" my hairy white ass!
Marked as inaccurate. - RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You signed up to Digg just to comment on how awesome Comicspace is? Very suspicious....
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Does not contain Penny Arcade, does not contain Schlock Mercenary....
- stormbear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I got a lot of help on syndication within a very little time. This is one of the most amazing community tools for cartoonists on the web.
Also, the zombies have been washed either. - Fullarmour, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3COMICSPACE is uber awesome. not even to just sound like a fangirl but it actually is. There are a lot of Comic oriented sites but this one puts us all in one place! Much more relevant and instant than conventional media. Seeing it will do a better job of me explaining what it is...
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Tell your employers that if they're going to hire people to astroturf on sites like digg, they should at least make it less obvious.
- Paperghost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6As long as they keep customization to a bare minimum, they'll be fine. There's no need to ape a more general social networking site like Myspace, the comics are the primary reason everyone's on there. I view the profiles on there more as calling cards for the individual creators, nothing more - the flashing lights / funky colours / whatever should be kept to the sites linked to from the profile pages.
- drathan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I completely agree. I am hoping comicspace wont soon allow full HTML or embedded movies, songs and all the crap that makes MySpace unbrowsable. In this case, less is more.
- Bigfootsdick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2owned.
Its already going down from traffic.- drathan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Digg is like the Eye of Sauron, peoples. No server rack can handle Its Stare. But give it some time, and come back, its worth it.
- LaueOfficer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9So it's a million times better than Myspace?
Then I guess it's still only half as good as Facebook. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12If Myspacex1000000=ComicSpace, then ComicSpace= -1000000000000000000
- andrewry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You know that if a positive number times a number comes out to be negative, then the number you are multiplying by must be negative.
With your calculations, it shows that MySpace is equal to about -1000000000000. Slightly better than ComicSpace, but sucky nonetheless. - dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It says a million times BETTER, not just a million times.
That would make the formula more like:
ComicSpace = Myspace + Absolute value(MySpace x 1,000,000)
Which means it is at worst, zero (when myspace = zero) - mrwiggl3s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Comicspace = | (MySpace x 1,000,000) |
???
- andrewry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You know that if a positive number times a number comes out to be negative, then the number you are multiplying by must be negative.
- firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6what the *****. it doesn't even load.
- Jonny5alive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Any site that doesn't load is a million times better than Myspace.
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6so its that much better than myspace that it had to take half of myspaces's name?
sounds fishy to me- andrewry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I never realized that "space" is a word trademarked by MySpace.
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5the issue isn't the trademark, its the fact that its an unorignal name for a myspace clone using 'space'- just like every other myspace clone, and then its saying "oh we're so much better"
if they're that much better they can think of an original name - andrewry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How is using "space" unoriginal. It's a generic word meaning something that represents the site. It's a "space" for comic book enthusiasts. I don't see what's so bad about that.
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apple doesn't have a trademark on the letter "i" either but naming a program i-something makes it sound like they're trying to copy apple.
Similarly, a social networking site that is named "__space" is most definitely capitalizing on MySpace's name recognition. It's not illegal or even bad necessarily, but it is unoriginal. - dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, well myspace is just a rip-off of http://www.outerspace.com/
(Actually, it looks like it's just some crappy place holder, one of those sites bought by a vulture who wants to re-sell it at a huge profit. Scum of the internet, the only lower beings are spammers.)
- stepcraft, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1ComicSpace = Can'tLoadSpace
Typical Digg effect. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Damn! i thought it was going to be about comics. as in people who do comedy before a live audience.
Apparently, it is just about comic books, the nice, safe kind of publishing that doesn't even require the amazing ability to perform live in front of people.
Non diggi! It sukki!- azizaziza, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4I diggi you!! It funni!!
- Quantum121, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Personally I dislike any space, even the one that surrounds out planet. I think it's just an orgy of people who "Have lives" because they have a ">something< Space" I'm sick of that *****.
- fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7The description of the title should be edited and say "Hey look at this site, please, please, please, we want to make it popular so that we can sell it later on for millions like myspace!"
Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam - anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Server is down... it IS better than myspace!
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You are like the third person to make that same stupid joke and it doesn't even make any sense.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Think we could take down a Myspace server the same way?
- museo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3While having a name that sounds like a myspace clone, the webcomics community needs somewhere like this where comic artists can interact with their fans and the artists can build a fanbase and connections in a free and easy way. Places like comixpedia and webcomiclist (while good) just dont offer this.
Now if they sort the server issues (cause falling to less than 100 diggs is just lame) they could be in business. - iamshades, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0it loads fine for me.
now where are the ***** comics? - moxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well it's just as good as Myspace in loading speeds...
- BasouKazuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If ComicSpace became as popular as myspace, I'm willing to bet it would suck just as much.
Myspace- started out as a music site for promoting bands
ComicSpace - started out as a comic enthusiast site
I think you see where I'm going with this. Comic Space is for a niche audience. Once non-comic enthusiasts start flooding the site, it will lose all meaning much like MySpace. - cmchavez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, JTorque's IQ level will never be in question. As he points out, 1000000 x 0 = 0.
- DiggMeUpPlsThx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0YAY! Finally a space for clowns.
- rishard10212, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1coolio
- Cleanlyness, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1mySpace is for teh teenage whores
hi loser! - idiggeverything, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Whoa, this site rules. Won't even load. What a piece of *****.
- FrugalFreak, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I'm sorry but Lil boys play with comics, video games. get with Real life.
- aurifex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Too bad I have no comic ability. :|
- rnguyen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The two sites are different.. How do you even compare them?
- zbilly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2if only it didn't look hideous..
- acura86, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3this is so lame-o. bad design, slow load-up. stupid stupid stupid.... BURY
- travors, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's a useful site for cartoonists and fans. Still in it's infancy though.
- BitterStoat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I dunno... it's still pretty primitive. There are no tools to find the sort of comic creator you might be looking for without knowing who they are in advance. They've added tagging, and plan to have more more useful features such as posting cartoons. Until they do, it isn't that useful as a social network - there's not enough information for people to find each other. Don't get me wrong - I'm on the site (or rather my writer is, representing our comic) and it has a lot of potential. I hope it pans out. But as I see it, it has a long way to go and I'm a little puzzled by the fervent response to it.
If this is a success, I bet you can stick any word in front of "Space" and have a million hits in one week. PimentoLoafSpace.com anyone? - NessaLynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ComicSpace actually is a lot better than MySpace in my opinion. Tags are great, cause I can tag myself with whatever I want and find others who've used the same tag. You can also reply on your own comment space, unlike MySpace. (No frigging clue why MySpace doesn't do that.) There's also going to be a feature soon to add someone as a fan of theirs without their permission. That kind of thing is great for comic pros who don't want to friend people they don't know, but don't want to regect people either.
I, like others hope they don't allow video and music files to play, but some images would be nice for the artist folk.
All in all, it's a pretty cool networking site for comic people. - buzzfretz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I joined up, started meeting people and received a couple of thousand page requests in the past week. Plus, I've met lots of interesting folks. Seems like most of the naysayers aren't very interested in comics--just web bashing.
As for the 'million times better' phrase, everything on the damn web is described as '2.0' , the 'next big thing' or 'outside the box' or some such other meaningless bull. So what? - Anteros, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0There doesn't seem to be anything to do on this site besides look at profiles and add tags to your profile. I am a bit confused why this is getting so much hype and attention.
- nethelpers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1If this is a comic interested site, you might want to check out bubbleply.com (http://www.bubbleply.com) to embed a few movies there.
- TwwIX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1as useless as myspace would be a more fitting title for it
- bamatrojan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Drunk Duck (drunkduck.com) does what theirs does - and doesn't suck (actually has comix!!)
- firestorm2117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, DrunkDunk.com is, in fact, a webcomic hosting site. Not a networking site. There's no way to promote your webcomic without having them host the thing. So, it's great for people who are just starting out, have no means to host a comic themselves, and don't mind banner ads and the drunk duck templates. But for someone who just wants to make connections with other artists and writers, both amateur and professional, I think comicspace.com has some real potential.
- GiraffeBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No where near as cool as the original - superheroalterego.com
Much more to do there. - emochick101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im hungrey
